One of the things on the list that I wanted to go to was an East coast diner. I think my expectations were a little too high. I now realize that diners serve a function. Everything is not going to be good and some things should be avoided. I got the Red Hook Dlx burger. I don't know how it happened but the whole was less than the sum of the parts. All of the ingredients really spoke to me. Unfortunately the chili was bland, the burger under seasoned. Seriously with the canned mushrooms, it's an east coast thing I guess. The onions and bacon were the best parts. Cooked perfectly and plentiful. The lettuce just kind of got in the way. Empty vitamins. My wife got the tuna melt and the Greek salad. She was a big fan of the salad. The tuna tasted a little strange though. I loved the accoutrements. Fries were good. Under seasoned but I can operate a salt shaker. We had a very bad experience at the Red Hook diner. The owner's wife was at the front counter, she refused to talk to my wife because she speaks slightly accented English. She was told she had to speak to a Spanish speaking employee. My wife speaks English perfectly and was very insulted by this. We've been there many times, the eggs are ok. Save your money and avoid the aggravation. Stopped here because they had a big sign on route 9 for a prime rib special. Avoiding my own credo ( diners are for gyros and burgers), we stopped. The first slice of prime rib I was served was medium at best ( I ordered rare) and white like it had been in a microwave. The server confirmed they don't use a broiler to cook it but said she would find me a rare piece. The second one that came out was literally ice cold. It obviously went straight from the fridge to the plate. This was about the time I told the server to 86 the order as I really didn't want to gamble with anything else out of that kitchen. Here comes the manager.... She wants to know what the problem is. I tell her and she actually says that I should eat the cut that was served ice cold because it's costing her money ( so not my problem). She leaves the table then returns to tell me that it was ice cold because she checked ( I'm not going to lie ....). Went in for takeout coffee and breakfast snack. Walked in and asked for menu. Manager points to stack of menus rather than handing to me. I sit at counter and order two coffees and two breakfast sandwiches with ham and cheese on English muffin which is listed for $3.95 including egg. I say leave the egg off. Nice waiter tells me there's an up charge for English muffin but it can come in wheat or rye toast. I say Ok put on wheat. Waiter brings bill for $22!!! I say no way, cancel my order. He cannot reasonably explain price and looks embarrassed. I go to pay for coffee and manager asks why I cancelled sandwiches. I explain the price is ridiculous. He says, "It costs a lot to run a place like this!" I still haven't figured out how it got priced that way unless pricing for a grilled cheese sandwich. I go next door to Dunkin' where I should have gone in the first place and get more coffee (even their coffee was bad) and avocado toast and ham and cheese muffin. Lesson learned! read more

A couple of out-of-staters looking for a salad for lunch. One needed to be vegan, but that has never been an issue. Worst case was asking for the cheese to be swapped out for another veggie. Reviewing the menu found that all the salads had a meat and a cheese. That meant we would be paying for a salad that had the two most expensive ingredients swapped out for something cheaper. But we were hungry and already seated. When the waiter came by we asked to have the meat and cheese swapped out. With an obligatory eye-roll, he said that the salads came as stated in the menu with no substitutions. With that, we asked for the check for the 2 seltzers that were already delivered. To add insult to injury, the 2 sodas came to $8.54!!. Fortunately, we found a much more accommodating, and reasonably priced diner in the center of Rhinebeck and was happy to leave a 20% tip. read more

My parents are regulars at Red Hook Diner. Today, my mother came in to pick up an order and spoke with the owner, Carla. My mother asked for the order, in English, and Carla refused to speak with her and called over a Spanish speaking employee to interpret. When my mother tried telling Carla that she spoke English, Carla refused to speak to her and told her "I'm not going to speak to you." Carla, maybe you need a lesson on microgressions or some anti-racism training, because this is absolutely unacceptable behavior, especially in 2024. Won't return. I have enjoyed this diner in the past so stopped Sunday afternoon for coffee, pie & conversation. Could barely think with the custodian BANGING around the dining area with his sweeper... banging the broom against the dustpan & banging the dustpan on the floor. Around & around he went while people were eating and trying to talk. When paying, I mentioned this to the flippant blonde woman at register whose response conveyed that my opinion didn't matter. Of course cleanliness is important but not while eating! Keep the broom & dirt away from food! The usual spread of breakfast all day, burgers and sandwiches, gyros and other Greek-ish food, etc. French fries were nicely crispy and the coleslaw was creamy and tasty. My better half and I ate lunch here yesterday. They have several options on their menu, everything ranging from various breakfast plates to several dinner options (including steak and seafood). I ordered the chicken gyro while my girlfriend ordered a caesar wrap. Both main dishes were delicious! I wasn't too crazy about my sides (coleslaw and potato salad) as I found them to be a bit bland. My girlfriend's fries were cooked perfectly though. We have been coming here for 7 years when we are in the area. We have never had a bad meal or experience here until this afternoon. We were sat quickly waiter came over took our drink orders as we looked over the menu and specials. Our drinks came and we were still looking over the menu. We put our menus down for a just a moment and the hostess came over very rudely and ask what we would be having. She cut my husband off when he began to order his meal, bc she had to look at the specials to see if my meal came with a soup. We ordered mozzarella sticks to start. Our daughter kids chicken tenders, I ordered the chicken chimichangas and my husband our the french dip. Our mozzarella sticks came out fast and no sooner did they arrive so did our meal. Chicken tenders came out fine. My chicken chimichanga and I mean one was an oversized mushy burrito stuffed with dry chicken banana peppers and onions and sprinkled with little to no cheese. Chimichangas are supposed to be deep fried with a nice sauce on top that was not the case with this special. My husband's French dip came on a hard roll and not a hoagie with little to no meat on it and also had onions on it as well. The waiter never came over again to ask how our meal was only time we saw him is when he dropped our check off. They're really good at keeping your coffee cup full if you're looking to drink a lot of coffee to stay awake to start your day. The food is pretty standard diner food. Tea, for him was Luke warm water ,pushed that aside. blt club ,well the bread for that was horrendous. After picking up and removing toothpick, bread cracked all over and dry ,DRY! Although I don't generally flock here very often, though you are within my town's borders, when I came in after a hurried trip to Danbury the other day and headed back home, I was coming in from the south (on foot) on a cooler night and stopped in. You were open when the Dunkin Donuts wasn't (which was a godsend), yet I knew you were hoping to close within two hours of my entrance. Although I generally know what I want, I knew I was just awaiting a better selection of Uber cars in Dutchess Co having my car not quite two miles away from home and was here. I came in - in reality, to just "warm-up" -but got a piece of dessert cake to help offset the time (to be fair). Although the waitstaff handed me their to-go menu (in hopes of eliminating their normal menu altogether), when I mentioned a few factors of the reason why I was there, the first thing that came to mind was to get a quick-to-eat dessert and being tabled close to the cake stand, the waitress mentioned that I should just check out the stand and mention to her what looked appealing. I thought the one muli-chocolate layered cake on the one level looked appealing and got her to come over to notice which one - something she did. I promptly sat down and as she dished out a few other pieces and maintained the restaurant's appearance a teeny bit, I could hear her open the case to dish out the piece already precut and ready for serving. However, I was shocked when I received it. It tasted very dry - to a point where I don't think anything could have saved it - not even if I had ordered a drink couldn't it have saved it. And what really struck me is the taste of the Reeses cups candies at the end - something it didn't look like it had when I looked at it. Otherwise, it tasted "eh". Despite other factors, the chocolate tasted fine, but you could tell something was lacking in the cake. I don't know how long it had been sitting there - maybe it was starting to be outdated, and without that information and without good knowledge expect eyesight - and without price boards, I really was shocked. I order from this place every so often within the coronavirus pandemic times. I generally get good service, but there's always a problem with the food. I had ordered the Nutter Butter French Toast in September, but had other trouble then, and thought it would be fizzled out by now. This french toast suffered a separate fate, but then again I was transporting it back home in my car, and something happened to it then. I won't make a big deal of this, but a separate manner happened when I walked in for another desert-like item towards the beginning of the pandemic - and each time, it just creates havoc with something not tasting (what's the best way to say it) - fresh! I know it's not just me. Ever since this place opened, I have hated to come here, while I know I've had other troubles. While I can honestly say it's not getting worse, I can honestly also say that's it not getting much (If any) better and the troubles continue. But I keep coming back, hoping for better products or a change that would make me want to experience this place further - each time trying to find some way to find a way to see this place as "fitting" to the standardized style of food-serving with the way things are made here. I was seated rather quickly, and because of the non-abundance of other customers, (only a few were there when I entered, and you could hear their phone ringing for pickup orders only), I didn't see another soul enter the whole entire fifteen minutes I was in there. (I can further say that I caught some better Uber cars after my time in, and was able to warm up, so that I could go out after they got up to a point on their route to pick me up - an Uber driver I've had before. Had dinner at this diner on Saturday November 30, 2019 Ordered the Baked Salmon with Seafood Stuffing.... This order came with a salad and soup. The soup was atrocious the salad fair but the entrée was inedible. The salmon had no taste repeat no taste and the seafood stuffing was so disgusting it looked like mush and tasted horrendous. I did not eat this dish but paid and did not bother to comment to the owner. The lesson is READ THE REVIEWS AND BELIEVE THEM !!!!!! I understand that it can be difficult to maintain an attractive atmosphere when you are in between a drive-thru Dunkin Donuts and Route 9. However, the interior atmosphere was also very bare and lacked any personality. Regardless, food was nothing special. My chicken caesar wrap was very dry and fell apart after the third or so bite. I actually had to spit out the pickle that was accompanied by my lunch. The Red Hook Diner is a diner that everyone has been to before. It is an okay place if you just want something quick. Seriously, don't bother. Stopped by on the way to a hike for pancakes to share. When we asked for more than one set of plastic cutlery we were very rudely denied. Hubby and I were on our way back home and decided to give this place a shot. Really, REALLY wish we hadn't. I ordered the Roast Turkey Dinner which boasted "fresh turkey breast". Well, it may have been fresh but it was tasteless and looked like it came from the local deli. It was shaved. Who the hell serves shaved turkey for a turkey dinner??? The mashed potatoes were lukewarm and the gravy was tasteless. The veggies were limp and bland. And the price for this "turkey dinner"? $16!! I guess being close to NYC allows you to charge that much. Hubby got the chopped steak which he said was good, but again, the veggies were limp and bland.
