I eat out a lot just because I love trying new food and seeing the visions the chefs put forth. This place in particular place peaked my interest because they don't have a set menu and it changes weekly or so I'm told. This made me a little dubious at first but I went in with an open mind just to give it a chance. The ironic part is even though the space is on the small side you don't feel cramped at all.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff is beyond friendly and truly makes you feel at home. Now in regard to the food the plates were picked clean. I started off with the bread and butter and it came out warm and soft. It tasted like a sour dough but I'm not sure there were two types both delicious. Their homemade butter was out of this world especially since I love garlic and it had a roasted garlic flavor to it. I ordered the sirloin Moroccan kebab with koos koos and was it outstanding. It wasn't a complex plate at all. Grilled onions peppers with seasoned steak and koos koos with zucchini. The real charm is how they blended so well together and how fresh everything tasted. It felt like it was from a farm. I'm not a culinary expert but every bite just made you want another one. I'll be honest at first I didn't see how it would work but once I tried it was like DUH! I truly cleaned the plate for a second time. Then came desert which was a Choclate mocha cake with a raspberry sauce. Once again I wasn't sure if I'd like it because I'm not one for Choclate or raspberry but it was delicious. The cake was moist and light and the raspberry was slightly tart but just sweet enough to make dipping the cake in the sauce to be a luscious treat. I definitely plan going back regardless of the menu because not knowing actually makes it the fun part of the experience. Hands down the tastiest spot in Rhinebeck/Red Hook--and I almost didn't write this because part of me wants to keep it our little secret. The chef is an absolute gem, which explains why everything tastes like it was made with pure love. From the truffle-butter bread to the homemade pasta, every bite melts in your mouth and makes you question all other meals you've ever had. The team serving us was warm, attentive, and effortlessly lovely--exactly the kind of place you go when you want to treat yourself and actually feel treated. I can't believe it's taken us this long to try The Tasting Room. Had a really great dinner experience. This place is small and can only seat about 15 people. We made a reservation for 6 so we did not have to wait to be seated. Simple menu but still took us some time to decide what to order. I order the crab cake for appetizer and steak for entree. Crab cake was so soft and the sauce that came with it was delicious. Steak was Amazing. I had mine medium but would definitely recommend medium rare. Steak came with mashed potatoes, asparagus, finger potatoes and carrots with a wine sauce. Everything on this plate was delicious and I finished every last bit of it. For dessert we ordered the chocolate pots de crème and baked Nebraska. Chocolate was dense but good. The baked Nebraska was good. Loved the flambé show. Overall I highly recommend coming here. Chef also changes the menu periodically so it is worth a try! read more

My husband and I have enjoyed everything on the menu- the chef will easily make me something else - if he has it! I remember the first time the two of us went there and ordered 5 things off the menu because it was so tempting! the second time- maybe we wanted all 5 but settled for 3! Any steaks are grilled to perfection- the lobster is steamed- just right-the pasta is perfect- the crab cakes are so good! The sorbet is usually an herb with a fruit- only Daniel knows what works- -all the desserts are unique and wonderful- my favorite entree is the duck! Right after Thanksgiving 2024 , I made a reservation for Christmas week for my whole family of 16 people and we were really looking forward to it and several days before the reservation owner abruptly canceled saying he wanted to give his staff that day off. We're greeted by a friendly crowd coming through the door. Wow, read that there's a rather lively crew in this place. This is going to be a great experience! We immediately order a bottle of Amarone dell Valpolicella. For appetizers we order crab cakes, endive salad and beet and arugula salad. My endive seasoned with apple cider vinaigrette and Maytag blue is just delicious. I share it with the others to rave acclaim. The grab cakes I try are very tasty Just per The beets I'm told are excellent For entrees I've ordered the steak as has my son's fiancé. The steak is absolutely delicious ( although I did have to cut away some fat) My son had ordered the very last ossobuco, which is a traditional Lombard veal shank, braised with vegetables, white wine and broth. To say it's fabulous is also an understatement. The food( orgasmic), the drinks( fabulous), the ambience(fantastic- love the bathroom!) And the service(capable, prompt and friendly). Chef really knows how to prepare alimentary art. (Would love to see what he can do with Spam). The crab cakes were the best I've ever had anywhere. This place has it all going on. It's a little pricey, but the quality and execution makes it worth every penny. It's an experience, not just a meal. You need to find this restaurant. My husband and I booked this reservation for our anniversary dinner and it was one of the best meals we have eaten in our lives. The restaurant is run by the owner who does everything. He's the chef; he's the waiter, he's the busser and answers the phones too. When eating inside, you can see the kitchen and what he's cooking up. I loved that the menu was interesting, but not too many choices which makes things complicated in my opinion. We tried almost every appetizer. The crab cakes are outstanding. You actually can enjoy the crab inside and not taste all breading like other places. The salad we had with arugula, golden beets, pine nuts and feta was outstanding. And the Burrata was out of this world. Then, my husband and I both had the lamb for dinner. As a Greek and I'm particular about lamb. This lamb was the best rack of lamb I ever had. Also; the French onion puff pasty tart was outstanding. I ate everything on my plate and enjoyed everything. The desserts were so incredible too, flavorful and not too rich and delicious. I chose this restaurant because it sounded quaint, intimate with excellent food judging by past reviews. I booked it for 6 people and we were all excited for the upcoming experience. We were greeted by the server who was delightful and very engaging and a fleeting hello and hello back to the chef who's kitchen is in plain view to where we were seated. The restaurant is in a house where the chef used to live and currently rents out. There is a separate entrance for the restaurant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place looked worn and need of upgrading but we were still excited to what was to come[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Unfortunately the food turned out to be mediocre at best. Several of us had the crab cake appetizer including myself which was flat in taste, mushy and just seemed to taste like a frozen commercially available crab cake. My wife and I got the Tuna for our entre which also had almost no taste . We asked for it to be rare which it may have been but it was hard to tell since the color was not typical of a tuna steak and it was dry. It was not an enjoyable entre and again tasted as if it had been frozen for a long time before being served. My wife and I ordered a lava cake to share for dessert. My wife kept cutting into the cake to release the lava, alas, barely a few drops of lava. Prior to dessert the chef made his exit and left the desserts and coffee to the server who did an admiral job with what she had to work with. This was way more than eating. This was an experience that we won't soon forget! Besides an amazingly talented chef, Chef Daniel is a truly wonderful human being that is passionate about the food he prepares. It was a beautiful experience talking with Chef Daniel in between bites of his delicious food. We were so happy to be there and Daniel was happy to have us there! It felt like we all knew each other for years. We kept it light and ordered appetizers which consisted of crab cakes with an aioli sauce, burrata with baby tomatoes and pesto sauce and a refreshing beet salad with arugula and feta cheese I believe. All very fresh, light and delicious. We topped our meals off with Baked Nebraska, the chef's take on Baked Alaska. This was homemade vanilla ice cream infused with ginger and lavender and the outside was meringue which Dan lit on fire so we got that great toasted marshmallow like texture and flavor. Easily one of the most enjoyable desserts we've ever had. Prices were very reasonable considering the locally sourced high quality ingredients. All in all a terrific and one of a kind experience which felt like we were honored guests at the chef's home. To top it all off, Chef Daniel saw we were having trouble getting a taxi back to our hotel in the rain, so he graciously gave us a lift back. Like when does that ever happen, ever! We had a wonderful experience last night at The Tasting Room. The chef has converted the lower level of his home into a restaurant. We arrived before any other guests, and our table had a great view of the open kitchen, so it felt like we were having a private chef's experience. The food was expertly prepared and delicious. We had the excellent crab cakes (my husband is from Maryland and is a tough critic of most crab cakes), the red snapper and the quail (my God, the sauce!) and shared the Baked Nebraska and the chocolate pot au creme. Not sure how to review this place. On the one hand it is one of the finest unique dining experiences I have ever had. On the other hand it is tiny (due to Covid restrictions) and not sure if I want to get the place oversold. TERRIBLE SERVICE and system: I called over 3 months ago to make a reservation for my boyfriend's birthday for Saturday, 9/4. When I called, I was the first one to be added to the reservation list for that night. Just called to confirm the reservation for 2 people on 9/4 and they told me they're all booked up. How does that even make sense?? Apparently they didn't enter my reservation correctly, and now they're all booked up with other people who made the reservation AFTER me. We ate at the Tasting Room October 12. What a wonderful dinner! The restaurant itself is funky, in a good way. You are eating in the chef's basement so basically, he is cooking for you in his home. There are only five tables. The waitress, Roslyn, was so much fun, interacted with you the entire night, without being overbearing. She knew every detail about each course. After our meal, Daniel came out and spent quite a bit of time talking to us. We had the beet,arugula and feta salad, the silver dollar crab cakes for our appetizers. For the main dish we had the rack of lamb with an amazing reduction, served with the best potato cake I have ever had. Also had the snapper en paupiette, served with risotto Milanese, both cooked to perfection. To finish off the evening we ordered affogoto served with homemade with homemade ice cream and chocolate pot de creme. A really pleasant surprise tucked away here in Rhinebeck. If we are ever in the area again, we will definitely come back. read more

The classically trained chef/owner is talented, engaging, and puts out consistently great food in a cozy, vibrant room. The service by the friendly, professional staff is fantastic but informal, creating a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. Both the menu (seasonally changing) and wine list are well curated and excellent. The flavor profiles are on point, dishes are presented beautifully and the portions are perfect. If you happen to catch ramen week, run, don't walk. It's the best ramen I've ever had in my life (Chef Daniel grew up in Tokyo). Allow me to add onto the praise for The Tasting Room and Chef Daniel. When I first came across the listing on Yelp, I was skeptical of the 5 stars from literally every single person. But consider me a believer! The restaurant is the most hidden of all hidden gems. It is in the bottom floor of a house... and when you walk in, it has about 6 tables (mostly for two people, although there is one larger table). As the first patron that Saturday night, we had the perfect view of looking right into the open kitchen where Chef Daniel prepared all our meals. The menu changes fairly regularly to mirror the freshest ingredients in the area. We started with the clams, four deliciously-cooked clams that tasted like the ocean. With a little bit of bacon, it was the perfect explosion of tastes for my mouth and my soul. I ordered the rack of lamb, which was some of the most tender pieces of meat that rivals the very best restaurants of New York. My fiance ordered the linguine with Lobster. This... was... unbelievable. I was so jealous of the taste and the presentation. The lobster was cooked to perfection and prepared in such a way that allowed my fiance to eat every ounce of meat without doing much work. Just look at the pictures. It's incredible. People have already commented about the Baked Nebraska... their dessert. I'll just heap on the praise. It's so so good. It's basically a Baked Alaska, an ice cream and cake topped with meringue -- all ingredients locally sourced... and of course finished off with flame that gave the outside crust the perfect hot texture, cooled by the fresh coolness of the ice cream. All in all... a fantastic experience and will definitely be back. This rivals some of the best restaurants by premier chefs in NYC, but is about the price of a mediocre restaurant in NYC. I know it's a tired cliché, but I seriously debated whether to write this review, as this place really IS the proverbial hidden gem that I wanted to keep close to the vest. I've been dining at the Tasting Room for two years now, the first time on December 28, 2013, the second January 17, 2014. Both experiences were just about perfect. And when I say that, I'm not only talking about the food, I'm referring to the entire experience. As is the case with any restaurant, that encompasses the food, the vibe, the ambience, the room, location, etc. Class of '81 Culinary Institute of America Chef Daniel Gendron's Tasting Room is an intimate ten-seat restaurant tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood in Rhinebeck. A blessedly tranquil spot for a relaxing dinner. No hustle. No bustle. No crowds. No rush. Easy parking. I've only been here twice, but in some 30 years of dining out I can easily say that the Tasting Room is about as good as it gets. Chef Daniel sets the tone, working his magic in the open kitchen, while guests sit at candlelit tables sipping their BYOB wine in a calm and relaxed environment where you can actually hear what the person sitting across from you is saying. The food is exquisite. Daniel runs a successful catering business and his Tasting Room is the place where lucky diners get to experience approximately three choice appetizers, entrees and deserts nightly. On our first outing, we began with the Octopus and Poached Fennel with Fig Glaze appetizer and Baked Clams with Lobster Butter, both outstanding. A Bell & Evans chicken dish and Roasted Monk Fish Saffron with Fennel Broth Risotto followed these. Both were fabulous. Finally, we enjoyed an insanely good Chai Crème Brulee with the crunchiest of sugar crusts. By our second visit, we were confident enough to leave the decisions to our host, who came through with flying colors, serving an outrageous lobster bisque with vanilla bean and a thimble full of dry sherry. A divine Goat Cheese and Vidalia Onion Tart and a sublime Baked Top Neck Clams with Lobster Butter that just "popped" followed this. Sometimes, lobster bisque is more "bisque" than lobster. Not this one. Lobsterlicious! Our main course was a to-die-for Osso Buco with Potato, Celery Root Puree and Ginger Carrots for two. For dessert, we loved the Lemon Curd and Zinfandel Poached Pear Tart and Chocolate Grand Marnier Souffle. By the time we were done with each and every one of these dishes, we could see our satisfied reflections in the plates. Again, any fine dining experience isn't just about the food. I would describe the ambience as spa-like, very Zen. I don't even feel like I'm in a restaurant at the tasting room, more like I've been invited over for dinner. The Tasting Room is clearly a labor of love; Daniel clearly loves what he is doing. I also want to take a moment to give Daniel props for not hitting any of my restaurant pet-peeve buttons: not once did he approach the table (cue "Jaws" theme please) with the dreaded fresh pepper device, so we didn't have to suffer the absurd torment of the "would you like some fresh pepper" comedy routine. Everything is served at the right time, the right pace and the right temperature. Portions are perfect, neither nano-sized, nor mega-sized. Both times we left feeling neither the need to order a pizza, nor to audition for the next season of "Escape From Obesity," (Discovery Health.) I even prefer the BYOB policy so I don't have to waste 20 minutes perusing an unfamiliar wine list. To say the prices are reasonable would be an understatement. I've had more than my share of dinners that were twice the price and half as good. On our initial and return visits, the Tasting Room was about an hour's drive from our hotel. I've known Chef Daniel a long time so you may think this review is going to be slanted in his favor. Well, if it wasn't a meal I was impressed with, I would say nothing. I haven't been back to the Tasting Room since Covid. While I know and love everything Danny cooks is top notch, I am such a fan of his Ramen. The layers of flavors are ethereal. The broth is complex and has a story to tell. The meal is a journey into a process which has many facets. The broth, the quality of the noodles, the jewels that embellish the dish.... The chili oil warms your soul with flavors you can't quite identify, multi dimensional not just spicy. The Bao Buns that start the meal are so delicious, I hesitate to describe because I just can go overboard with more compliments. This Ramen is truly an act of love by this person. read more

This place is a little hard to find and looks unassuming from the outside. Once you enter the lovely Roslyn immediately makes you feel comfortable and takes care of you. The menu offers 3 choices of apps, 3 main courses and 4 desserts. Also Ramen is served on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There is a full cocktail list, a couple of reds and whites by the glass and a short bottle list. The food is absolutely fantastic. Chef Daniel knows what he is doing. He uses fresh, local ingredients and has a full command of French, Italian and Japansee cooking techniques. We enjoyed every bite and can't wait to go back with friends. Let us be the most recent to heap on another 5 star review. Chef Dan is doing something special at his cool, funky and relaxed restaurant. Each dish, from the perfectly chilled and dressed beet and goat cheese arugula salad to the finely seasoned and cooked silver dollar crab cakes and my wife's beautiful scallop entree with a light and flavorful risotto. Spring asparagus was perfectly al dente. The real star of the show was a 30 day dry aged rib eye with the best demi-glace based au poivre sauce that I have eaten. Rich peppercorn flavor, perfect consistency and mouthfeel. No brandy cream shortcuts. It is a real gem. The process I know is labor intensive which may explain why nobody is doing this anymore. Three days to make demi-glace is just not practical for the business side of most restaurants but he gets it done. Great technique. What a pleasure it was. His home made vanilla ice cream with cardamom (and maybe ginger) would command a a very dear price at any gourmet specialty store. We both agreed that it may have been the best tasting ice cream that either of us had ever had. Much fun hoisting a glass of vino (or two) after the cooking was done with the Chef. We ate at the Tasting Room on Friday October 8th. The eating space is in a walkout basement and the access is not cared for or well lit. The space is a cheaply appointed and is an uninspired one, relative to the prices being charged for the meal which are extremely high relative to the experience. It was OK food: The endive salad was nice, bread was "maybe available" when we asked, but then actually "you probably do not need the bread since your entrees are coming soon" Reduction sauce was dull and overly salted, polenta tasted bland, and the risotto was just rice and not a risotto, the vegetable was a steamed piece of cauliflower and was super boring to eat. The same reduction sauce was served on the chicken and the lamb dish: really? The wine we ordered from the wine list was wrongly listed and although "it was the same producer" claimed the server. The server was overbearing, asking personal questions and being manipulative constantly saying things like, the chef did this, and the chef does that, telling us the chef made a "four day reduction sauce" (really?), the chocolate desert was overcooked and mediocre: The server came and whispered: Did I oversell the desert? And I said: Probably you did. We were bewildered at the accolades on yelp, the food was very uneven and the place had zero ambiance. Not going there again. read more

Had dinner at The Tasting Room last night for hubby's birthday. Awesomest well executed dishes. Great experience and saw how chef was making our food from our table. By chance there was a professional singer at another table who sang bday song for my hubby. read more

Chef Daniel Gendron catered our wedding and it was truly an amazing experience. The food was delicious and there was so much of it. As the bride, I was very worried about making sure my guests were well fed and that they loved the food. Daniel assured me there would be plenty of food and that it would taste delicious and he did not disappoint. We had a carving station, salmon, and stuffed chicken breast, all of which were amazing. Not only was the food absolutely delicious, but Daniel was easy to work with and made the wedding food experience a really great one. I totally trusted him all along the way that our food would be incredible. The wedding guests have been raving about the food. My husband and I will certainly make the drive from Albany to Rhinebeck to have dinner with Daniel frequently. read more

After reading previous all the rave reviews and living close by, my partner and I were very excited to eat here. Multiple issues came up immediately. Upon arriving, we were approached by an unmasked chef Daniel who assured us that he was vaccinated so we didn't need to worry about him waiting on us / cooking our food without a mask. While it seemed strange, we sat down and had to wait over 15 minutes for him to take our drink order since he was cooking another table's food. While the crab cakes were decent, the meal itself was bland, and when we ordered dessert, Chef Dan opened a beer and started a conversation with the neighboring table about how he believes vaccination is a way for the government to sterilize us, and he was in fact NOT vaccinated. So on top of the mediocre food, he lied to our faces and put our health at risk. He proudly explained he hasn't changed the menu in twenty years, which was no surprise. Even aside from the COVID stuff, the food was just bland, underseasoned and unimpressive. My partner and I were down for the funkiness of the place, being based out of his home and everything, but the chef was simply irresponsible and did not put a good meal together for the prices charged. read more
