I haven't been here in about 20 years and thats 100% my fault. We went for the early bird ($25) the night before vacation because we didnt want to cook. We both had the chicken marsala (amazing). I had the BBQ boneless wings with an epic chunky Bleu Cheese dressing. My husband had the asparagus tempura appetizer and it was so good we took 2 orders to go. Meal came with soup or salad (French onion top notch) and coffee and dessert (cheesecake or choc cake). They were busy! All reservations so we had to sit in the bar area. Driving past Bowery Dugout on Ulster Avenue in Kingston, you'd never know how good it smells inside. Since my husband isn't on Yelp, I did my usual digging first. Unfortunately, the pictures+reviews on Yelp are disappointing enough that I almost talked us out of coming here. Hubs still wanted to try it. We were pleasantly surprised. The Bowery D has two flrs. You can sit downstairs- which is used for mostly for events- but we were told most people head upstairs and that's what we did. The main dining rm is carpeted, spacious and has a decent-sized bar. The first thing we noticed was the nice seafood smell in the air. So why come here? Raw oysters for one. Also because hubs has had Lobster Newburgh on his mind lately and the closest thing these folks offer is a mixed seafood Newburgh. He went for it. Result? He liked it. My Swai fish was tasty, though I was expecting something a bit flashier than sweet potato fries. My Jamboozle cocktail didn't have any oomph so I stuck to water after that. Great deal on the early bird specials! Food is pretty good, and service is great. I had stuffed shrimp, and my partner had stuffed flounder. It's the small things that make a difference - a plate of carrot and celery sticks and some garlic bread on the table are a nice touch. I came here for the first time and will probably be my last. Our merry little group mostly ordered the crab cake sandwich. It was impressive when it arrived but the crab cake was mostly bread. Since this is a seafood restaurant, I expected better. One member of the group ordered the seafood fried platter...it looked typical. The menu was mostly fried foods. The best part was the onion soup. It was flavorful and delicious. I know my phone is supposed to eat first but I dug in before realizing I hadn't taken a shot. Sorry folks but it looked like what all French onion soups look like. They only had one waitress who had to take care of everybody and I wonder if maybe that was why the bar was closed which was also disappointing. The restaurant is small and looked dated. My son and I took my wife to the Bowery Dugout to celebrate her birthday. We have been coming here for years and have always enjoy our meals. We have never had any issues until recently. It was a minor issue but took away from our enjoyment of the night. The next day I called and spoke to Jeff the owner. He apologized and went out of he way to make things right. I was very impressed he is a man of his word and is concerned for his customers.That is something that you very rarely find in todays world. Thank you Jeff and we will be back soon. read more

Visited Noivember 8th our 55th wedding anniversary. Once again we were greatly pleased with everything the restaurant has to offer. Our server Andrew was great. The food cooked perfectly and the taste reminded me of my younger years living near Chesapeake Bay. My wife felt her drink was as good as it gets. This is where we go for fresh whole lobsters as a family in Kington! Call ahead to ask when the fresh lobsters will be in, and make reservations! It's not a fancy place, and they used to have outdoor seating during COVID. The parking lot is massive, so no issues there, find yourself upstairs to the dining area. You'll hit the bar first with the game playing, and grab a table to sit amongst locals (much older crowd) having an early dinner with their friends, some on dates, etc. the key here is to order the fish special ($35-40) or the whole lobster (approx $70), and a lot of wine. It's just a nice quaint place, no frills, good service, and massively poured wine. To all- This is not fine dining so do not expect fine dining. The raw clams were delicious. The Zappa di pesce was swimming in watered down manhattan clam chowder broth. The seafood was great. Especially the scallops. The vinaigrette for the salad is prepackaged and refrigerated so it came out in clumps. We asked for extra oil and vinegar and the waitress then went two tables down and chatted for 7 mins. Decided to take the meal home to add proper sauce. She packed in a plastic container not meant for liquids. Leaked all in the bag before I left the restaurant. By the way there were a total of three tables and 4 or 5 wait staff chatting in a group in the dinning rm. smh read more

A group of us, high school classmates, went for lunch and it turned out very well. The only negative I will say is that there was another group, 9, people and only one waitress. I felt sorry for her as it got very busy. She was patient and very kind with a nice personality. Our food did take longer than normal to come out busy as I said it was busy. The French onion soup was great and from two others they said the fish and chips was light and tasty. My chicken sandwich was also very good. Went there for crab legs on a Friday night they were out of stock at 5:00pm??Waitress stated they haven't had them in a while....Not very smart for a so called seafood restaurant !! Garlic bread tasted and looked like it was from the frozen section at a convenience store ,,,gross!! The so called boneless chicken were flat pieces of dark meat or chicken skin....I almost puked. For dinner I ordered the twin lobster tails and 15oz. steak...There was nothing fresh about it at all.....straight from Sam's Club.. Old school seafood restaurant, very friendly, oozing history. It has been around since the 1940s. The basement restaurant - the dugout - is casual, with old murals on the walls. Upstairs is a more formal dining room and bar. For lunch I had a delicious fried oyster po'boy with gazpacho on the side. Very tasty. For dinner with a few friends the hits were: a cajun style roasted haddock, the broiled seafood medley, very authentically French garlicky frog legs. My fried shrimp and scallops were nicely done. I've been to this establishment several times, and everything has always been above good, but last night I had the zuppa di pesce and it was remarkable. Hands down the best I've ever had in life and to be honest, I'm not young. I've had it many times in many places including well known 5 Start Italian Restaurants in Manhattan. The food was terrible. My chicken was VERY chewy and ruff to bite. Garlic bread was very crunchy. Drinks were warm. Service was the worst i've ever seen it. Took at least 20 minutes to even get a server at our table, had to ask for my food early after waiting at least 40 minutes. Didn't check up on us once while eating the food. Not the cleanest place ever carpet is dirty the fish tank is terrible looks like it's never cleaned and the fish is never fed!!! It very dark in there also. The overall environment is not good. It's very cramped in there with not a lot of space and tables. Don't get me started on the bathrooms!!!! First walk in and it's already crowded. The first bathroom is a gate doesn't even cover up half the door and has a BIG gap in it. The other bathroom has a heater!! And is very dirty. I've lived in Kingston for 25 years and let me tell you, you won't find better seafood than you would at the Bowery. I'll do my best to give readers a quick glimpse of what your wonderful night here will look like Service : you can choose between upstairs in the "restaurant" or downstairs which gives a retro speakeasy jazz club feel, plus you can see and hear the chefs from downstairs, which is a sight to behold. Any server you get will give you a great time, I've never had any issues with them. Feel: as mentioned the downstairs has a jazzy feel to it, which can be really nice for a quiet night out with your partner. On the other hand Upstairs gives a more open feel with a little more class. Sure to succeed in a first date or special occasions Food: the real reason people read this. Now I preface this with I'm not always a seafood person. But when I am I always crave the Bowery Dugout, their Swai is fantastic, swordfish steaks are great, and I'm a sucker for buffalo calamari or clam strips. Of course they have other great options other than seafood, classic Italian pasta, steak you name it, I'm positive it won't disappoint. Things to improve: I think everyone can improve, nobody is perfect, but I have very little to change about this place, the prices are a little high if you're on a budget, but that's why this is my go to special occasion night out place. Otherwise my complaints are few and far between. Overall I love this place, been going there for 20 plus years they've changed owners after the last owner retired, but nothing changed at all, still top quality seafood for a wonderful classy night out in Kingston. A nice random find. If you like seafood, you can't go wrong here. I passed it on the road and thought it was a bar. It's in an big old house. The old fellow who owns it rambles out and asks how everything is; I miss this as we rarely see this in the Portland area. They could use a bit of sound absorption on the walls. I had a guy who makes me seem quiet blasting away a few feet from me. It was 5:30 to 6:30 on Friday, so fairly busy, but not packed. I was seated right away. Horrible experience It was our first visit to Kingston and it was our anniversary and we chose the Bowery Dugout for their menu selections. We got there at 5:30 on a Friday, walked into the restaurant and the bar was on the right. The bartender/hostess greeted us with a very sharp "do you have a reservation?" and I said no. She looked around, and then looked at her notebook, turning the pages and shaking her head. She said " I can MAYBE fit you in at 7:00." We said no thanks and left. The bar had one person at it so we could have eaten there and the restaurant was not even half full. She was so rude that we wouldn't have eaten at the bar as she would have been our server and that would have ruined our evening. I checked the website many times and it does NOT say that you need a reservation anywhere. If that is their policy, put it on the website!! We came here for our 10th anniversary, having never been here but knowing we wanted fresh seafood. We had such a good time. The lobster was delicious. The steak was perfect! As a girl from who grew up in an island where seafood was caught, cooked than served (literally so fresh) I can say the Bowery has the best seafood I've tried in the area. The family and I went there for lunch, I had dinners in two other occasions, and so far have not been disappointed. Two of us had the lobster dinners, OMG it was so good. The lobster was tender, the butter sauce was wonderful. The rest of the meal was hard to remember as I was so happy with the lobster. Our server was very nice and we had great service. All in all, this was a wonderful meal in a really warm and friendly feeling restaurant. I also ordered a 10 dollar Bloody Mary which contained almost no alcohol. I believe this was my 4th visit to the Dugout and each time I was just as dissatisfied.
