A friend and I went here for dinner tonight based upon a recommendation from someone. We arrived at 5:45pm and was promptly seated, noticing there was only one other table of customers, but it was a large party of ten. We ordered pretty quickly and then the wait began. It took nearly an hour for our food to arrive ... one chicken and one buttermilk fried chicken dinner. My friend loved his chicken with vegetables and mashed potatoes and finished it. My buttermilk fried chicken was overcooked with a very dark brown look to it. Upon biting into the first piece, it was very crunchy (again, overcooked), greasy and tasted like the oil needed to be changed days ago. The vegetables and mashed potatoes were good, but I couldn't eat two of the four pieces. When it came time to pay, we were told that if we paid with a Visa or Mastercard, there was a 4% service fee. If we paid with a debit card or Amex, there wouldn't be a service fee. By the way, for two chicken dinners each with vegetables and mashed potatoes, one cup of soup and two beverages (iced tea and Diet Pepsi) the bill was $81! An hour wait for food (in a nearly empty restaurant), burnt fried chicken and a 4% service fee was all I needed to insure that I can't recommend this restaurant nor would I ever go back. read more

Just ate at Chops. Service was very good, food not so much. My wife had a "Kobe" beef burger. Problem was there was no Kobe (Japanese or US) beef in the burger. They charged $21 for a regular (probably 80/20 select grade beef) frozen beef patty that I could have bought from any grocery store. The order was for a medium burger, it came out well done. Staff was great, took it back and we suggested maybe they cook it medium rare this time, came out rare. Well, third time a charm, problem was NO Kobe beef anyplace near our table. The butter garlic flank steak flavor was to die for, loved that it was tender, but I didn't like that it was very fatty. They were very accommodating. Mandi was our amazing waitress. My friends enjoyed the ribs wings that they had on the appetizer menu, it satisfied their desire for barbecue ribs. Our waitress Yvonne was very friendly and knowledgeable the owner was very friendly. The atmosphere was quiet on a Monday the bar is really nice we ordered bang bang shrimp which was delicious I ordered the 20 oz Ny strip which was delicious my wife had the grilled salmon she loved it. We met a lovely couple who we shared a good conversation and a lot of laughs with that it was just a perfect night from beginning to end finished off with the delicious chocolate cake and coffee and Baileys. Decided to try Chops Grille after being left standing at the front door by the hostess at Front Street Tavern. She ignored us for a few minutes and finally said I'll be right back. She disappeared for at least ten minutes with no explanation and never came back. We got impatient and left. We were grateful that fate brought us to Chops Grille, a charming family owned place down the street. The restaurants owner, Denny greeted us at the door. We were promptly seated and well taken care of by a friendly professional staff for the duration of the meal. The food was delicious and the portions were enormous! We stumbled on Chops Grille and I have already texted all my friends that this restaurant is where they need to go to eat when they come to Kingston. Came here tonight as a Christmas party for my fathers job, I have never gotten better service. The owner came and sat with everyone at their tables, treated everyone as if he's known them for years. The service was out of this world, I would like to thank all employees for the most wonderful experience. We had a reservation but the owner said he couldn't seat us for ten minutes "to give the kitchen time to catch up." At least he's honest. So we went to the bar. No wines by the glass, no cocktails menu, so I ordered a drink the bartender recommended which was so-so. Not a great start. All the servers and staff were running to and fro frantically, but there was some festival going on in town, and the restaurant was packed, so I'll excuse the hectic atmosphere. After about 20 minutes, we were seated at a nice roomy table. The calamari appetizer was very good: plump, fresh, with more than enough marinara sauce in a gravy boat (whereas other places give you an inadequate amount). I ordered the oysters, but were told there were none. So, I chose the special gnocchi appetizer, which was tasty and nicely plated. His strip steak was enormous and perfectly cooked to rare. My cod was not as good -- tasted a bit fishy and not very fresh -- but the sides of spinach and roasted potatoes were fine. My glass of wine (ten bucks) was a very generous pour, but was of poor quality. I barely finished half. Our server was very good and did her best though all the staff seemed quite harried. Not the most relaxing environment, as I said. With tip, it was $150 for the two of us -- fair considering we had 2 cocktails, a glass of wine, 2 appetizers and two mains. All of it! Lol First I had a "red" onion soup (same as a french onion which uses sweet white onions except it has red onions). The cheese on top should be perfectly oozy and melty. It was burnt to a crisp. I pushed pass this because everything I've had in Kingston has been amazing so far. Then the burgers come out. Burnt! Dry.. both burgers my partner and I had were just awful. My family and I came to Kingston for the holiday season. While looking for a place to eat dinner, I was lucky enough to find Chops Grille on Yelp. It was less than a 5 minute walk from Front St where we parked. Upon entering, we were welcomed immediately by the owner, Denny. The restaurant is in a historic building that is decorated nicely and has good, low lighting. The TV at the bar is there for watching the game, but is not loud and doesn't dominate the space for those who don't want to watch. Our waitress (a young woman with long blond, wavy hair) was fantastic. All the staff were extremely attentive and gracious. In particular, the owner thanked us more than once for giving him our business, which is so rare and special these days. Much appreciated! I had the filet mignon, which was delicious. All the portions were quite large, so much so that we had lots of leftovers to take back to our Airbnb. You get a lot for your money here. Absolutely delicious! We started with dirty grey goose martinis made to perfection. Iced glasses. Moved to scallops which were the special and did not disappoint. A bit strong on the pepper but the lemon cut it and made it great. Strip steak and filet were amazing! Usually when I ask for medium it's over done but this place made it almost rare. We happened upon Chops while visiting from Ft. Worth, TX. When we arrived we were told they had just sat 2 large parties ( ours was a party of 7). We honestly had a somewhat mixed bag experience at Chops. Overall service was good, and when I ordered a Moscow Mule they did not have a ginger beer but they mixed up something generally similar and it was on the house. Very nice of them to do that. We ordered the calamari for an appetizer and it was a decent, tender, light, fresh. But the cook was very light handed on the salt which is one of those dishes that has to be salted right before it gets to the table. Still. was an enjoyable appetizer. Next up we had the shrimp in a vodka sauce which was quite good. Again way skimpy on the salt, but an overall good dish. The pasta seemed to be very fresh, large shrimp (although only a couple in a pretty large portion). Where things fell really short was the 8oz filet mignon. It was tender cut, it was cooked to the proper medium-rare doneness I had requested, but the best way I can describe it was very dry, again the salt wasn't just light handed it was simply non-existent and that is where it harmed the dish. The flavor just wasn't quite there on this dish. One odd observation was the blue track lighting where we were sitting. Blue light and food just can make the food look less appetizing. It wasn't off-putting but still something to take note of. The staff was courteous, and it is nice to have a good dining experience in Kingston, especially a steakhouse where there are few local options. read more

The drinks were, again, generously poured The steaks were perfectly seasoned and as good as any of the great steakhouses back on Long Island. The baked potato was perfectly done as well. The menu is overpriced and the service is extremely slow. we ordered two appetizers and it took over an hour for them to arrive. Either they need to get a new chef, or they need to hire additional staff to provide food at an appropriate time. The draft beer was down and they had no beer chills in bottles. We had to wait 15 minutes for a bottle of beer to be chilled before it was served. The bathrooms are behind the curtain and they are not marked whatsoever as bathrooms. Wonderful food, great staff. Chops is a beautiful restaurant located in the caned of Kingston. It is fairly new, but the best of them all. For Valentine's Day, there was a special menu with amazing courses. The dishes were even aesthetically pleasing. They offer a wide array of options and will take food restrictions very seriously. The prices are also affordable, thank god! I went a few days after and was served by the main chef himself. I had carrot and ginger soup, which at first turned me off; but once I tried it, I was in love. I then had the lamb lollipops which were cooked to perfection with a mountain of mash potatoes and vegetables.
