A steak house that can't cook steak to temperature. Waitress was attentive, pleasant. Restaurant was clean and nicely decorated. Drinks were good. Food was "eh" Vegetables that came with the steak I ordered were carrots and zucchini that were probably cooked at the same time. Carrots were hard and zucchini was mushy. It was just weird. I wish I could give this place a more enthusiastic review. My boyfriend and I were passing through Kingston, and I wanted to thank him with what I expected would be a nice steak dinner. We both ordered NY Strip Steaks (medium) and found that we both had a poor cut of meat. I don't think the issue was that the meat was overcooked; it was still quite pink in the middle, even pinker than I would have preferred. I was sawing away at it with my steak knife and couldn't cut through it. Tough, rubbery, and bland in flavor! I ended up leaving a lot of mine on the plate. My boyfriend agreed that it just wasn't good. We consoled ourselves with apple crisp a la mode for dessert, which we enjoyed. Friendly and gracious service, intimate atmosphere but didn't deliver on food or drink. A cozy bar greets you on arrival but no one knew how to make a French 75 and after 20 minutes it arrived flat. Quiet weekday evening- but even with a limited menu, they were out of filet mignon and our shrimp scampi had no garlic, white wine, olive oil, butter or lemon. What?!? Just sautéed shrimp with spiralized veggies, garlic spinach and an under baked potato. The dessert menu was beside the point- all they had was rice pudding and plain or lemon cheesecake. Really nice place. Owner and staff are super friendly and owner makes his way around the place even on busy nights to check in with people. Place looks really fancy on outside but fortunately allows for a relaxed atmosphere. Steaks are amazing and worth the trip. A little pricy but like many places you pay for a quality meal and nice view. Will definitely be back. Been back twice since the original review. Once within the last month the other about 5 months ago. Both times the steaks were undercooked. We were told about the open flame cooking and the outside getting dark before the inside reaches temperature. We usually go for med-well to well done. This was maybe medium with all pink inside. The dish was served with vegetables. Instead of the steak served next to it the steak was on top of the vegetables drenching them in bloody juice. Nice looking place. That's about the only positive thing I can say. Since we never got most of our food, I can't really say much about the quality of the food. But I can say that the menu items are pretty unimaginative: burgers and fries, steak and fries, salmon, chicken, shrimp. When we walked in, we were given a table and told that they were busy. The waitress seemed rushed and didn't seem to understand what we were saying. First we got menus, but no drink menus. Later we got a wine menu, but still nothing that listed beer and cocktails. When I asked the waitress what their cocktails were, she just said, "Oh, the usual. We have a full bar." Which should have tipped us off that this is not a very remarkable place. I then asked what scotch whiskey they had, and she didn't know. She disappeared and came back a longish while later and finally told me the short, unimpressive list of whiskeys. So I ordered a beer and my friends ordered their drinks, and we immediately ordered our dinners, two burgers and one steak. After a long while, we got the salad I ordered along with dressing (which I was not given a chance to choose) before the drinks came. We were also given a plate of pita and hummus. After we were there for about an hour and fifteen minutes, we were impatiently looking to see if our waitress was going to bring our food. Finally, the waitress came over and told us that at this point, after waiting well over an hour, it would be another 20-30 minutes before we would get our food "because the kitchen was so backed up." But dishes were going out to other tables. This made no sense. At this point, we decided to leave. read more

Start with the delicious Bang Bang Shrimp. I spoke to the owner, a lovely guy, and told him how how this fresh shrimp appetizer was great. I think most owners just would have said "thank you very much." But this owner was honest. He said restaurant shrimp are flash frozen when caught, other than near harvesting areas. Who knew? So if you order "fresh" shrimp in New York, it was actually frozen. The drinks here are incredible. Thank you for the great Manhattan. Our table had very good burgers and fish and chips. I have had horrible rice pudding in the past, but my friends convinced me to order it. Fantastic! The rooms are "old school" and very attractive, and you don't need to shout to be heard. My wife and I had a one night stop over in Kingston, and we were in the mood for some meat protein and potatoes. So we decided on Chop and we're fully satisfied with the meal and the service. I had the very generous serving of rare lamb chops, grilled to perfection, with a side of heavenly garlic mashed potatoes and julienned medley of squash and carrots, all exceptionally delicious. My wife enjoyed the medium rare steak with a perfectly done baked potato. The portions were significant, so much so that now we have tomorrow night's dinner. The food was fantastic -- I enjoyed a great steak meal, my husband tried the "Shrimp Cardinale", a flavorful pasta dish, and our son had a "classic burger" and fries, both of which were uncommonly tasty. The restaurant is contemporary and comfortable, but the staff and the owner bowled us over with very old-school hospitality and friendly conviviality. We ordered mostly basic, familiar items but everything was prepared with unexpected flair. Even the house Italian wine was a nice surprise. I went to Chops grille for the first time with my father and my boyfriend last night and I immediately had to write a review. Not only was the food excellent but the hospitality of the servers and the owner was superb. We all were extremely pleased with our dinner. Not to mention the portions were very generous. Chops is an authentic steakhouse that does not disappoint. My New York strip was cooked to perfection and tender with an au poive sauce on the side. The baked potato was sizable and baked, not steamed in foil, as some places do. The salad with homemade blue cheese dressing was yummy and the side of vegetable, asparagus was tender and flavorful. My husband had the escargot en croute which he adored. He had the burger as his entree. It was cooked perfectly and the fries were a highlight. The service was attentive and friendly. Took my parents here Saturday for their 35th wedding anniversary. I have to say that there are few decent restaurants in Kingston NY and we were extremely pleased with our meals,service, and overall experience! Our experience at Chops Grille was pretty lousy. The food was OK - I had a burger, and the burger itself was fine, nothing special, but the bun was stale. My kids had fish and chips - they enjoyed it well enough, but the fish looked and tasted like it came frozen rather than fresh. On a bright note, the fries were good - fresh cut, with a nice seasoning. The kicker was my wife's order. She wasn't super hungry, and ordered a bowl of soup for her meal. We thought we might try each other's food (soup & burger), and mentioned this to the server who informed me that there would be a "sharing" charge to cut the burger in half. So, she offered to bring it out whole to save us the fee. Huh??? This just seemed so pathetic, esp for a $100 dollar meal. Get ready, here's the best part. We paid by credit card. When I looked at my c/c statement, they had added $4 to the total. Not sure if this was the "sharing" fee, or someone bumped up the tip, or some other mystery charge. Regardless, it's super annoying. All in all, we were happy to get out of there, never going back. The added $ were just the icing on the cake. The food wasn't terrible, but that's about the best I can say. My fiancé and I went to this place right when it opened. The bartender let us know that some kinks were still being worked out. So we waited a few months. Tonight, I was in the mood for a steak. I have a regular place uptown to enjoy a perfectly cooked steak, but we wanted to try something new. We ordered two glasses of wine to air out before we got our meals. I ordered a half-pint of beer while we decided on food. There was a little confusion as to what I meant by that. But after a few minutes they figured it out. My fiancé ordered a shrimp and pasta dish. I ordered the 20 oz. strip streak...rare. I always order a rare steak my first time at a "steak house". About 20 minutes later we got our food. The shrimp and pasta dish was tasty but over priced for what it was ($26). What we expected. The steak was a nice hot pink center. Just what a desperate bachelor is looking for. But not at all what a snobby, engaged, steak hound wants. The seasoning was great. But I ordered a rare steak. As far as I'm concerned, take the steak out of the fridge, 30 seconds-one minute on each side on the grill, slap it on the plate and I'm happy. This thing was steaming hot. It was tasty but my carnivorous self was left wanting. I mentioned it to the delightful server who suggested I talk to the owner to "figure it out". The owner offered to make a new steak. But I'm not going to send back a steak and let it go to waste. We paid our bill of about $80. Before we left I let the owner know that I felt it was weird that he didn't offer to at least by one of our beverages as a kind gesture after he acknowledged that my steak was overcooked and I still agreed to eat it. He then offered to buy our wine, but I don't want to have to tell someone how to run a business. And what the hell do I know anyways? Overall, this place was pricey for what it was. $26 for shrimp and pasta and $38 for a steak. It was a big steak. But overcooked nonetheless. I may have caught the grill cook on an off night. It happens. But the owner should step up his customer service game or get a manager that has their A-Game underwear on. Eat local. Be honest. read more

I entered an historic room, was pulled strait to bar, where the world class barkeep directed me to a dry spicy Malbec, of which I consumed two. Then after some lettuce wedge customizing, (have I mentioned I'm not a hands off diner), the biggest best wedge I ever had served me arrived garnished with bacon, hard boiled eggs, tomato, and avocado. After enjoying the 6:45 telecast of the Preakness with my new friends at the bar, on Chops high def flat screen. we all lamented for a while how, we had all three numbers but didn't box'em. Now we get serious: the 14 oz strip steak which hung over the plate, perfectly medium rare, closer to rare as I solicited, w au pouive sauce, Frits, and sautéed string beans the best! Now I'm asked what for dessert? Unfortunately I don't indulge in dessert. However appearing before me the best home grown Greek yogurt, w honey, and nuts. So why destroy a good meal, I ordered an expresso, and sampuca, which was served in a snifter with the requisite three beans. My expresso doubled with a twist along side . Another Kingston bore. I went to Chops when it first opened and I was so excited that we finally had a great steak/burger and wine joint in town. Most of the restaurants around Kingston are either bars with pretzels or $$$$ restaurants that simply aren't worth it. I had the Codfather when I went there and I was so happy with it! The breading was crispy and the fish was tender and perfect. Their wine selection was great too. But I went there yesterday with a friend and was totally let down. My food was bland and my friend got a burger and it was COLD. Totally gross. The front staff seemed rushed and stressed out and it really wore on the atmosphere. I don't know what happened to such a great start, but if I wanted a cold burger and crappy fries I could go to a diner and save about twenty dollars.
