Another Kingston bore. I went to Chops when it first opened and I was so excited that we finally had a great steak/burger and wine joint in town. Most of the restaurants around Kingston are either bars with pretzels or $$$$ restaurants that simply aren't worth it. I had the Codfather when I went there and I was so happy with it! The breading was crispy and the fish was tender and perfect. Their wine selection was great too. But I went there yesterday with a friend and was totally let down. My food was bland and my friend got a burger and it was COLD. Totally gross. The front staff seemed rushed and stressed out and it really wore on the atmosphere. I don't know what happened to such a great start, but if I wanted a cold burger and crappy fries I could go to a diner and save about twenty dollars. Very disappointing experience - we will never return. Arrived an hour early before dinner reservations to have a few drinks at the bar. A very large man with a cane - dressed very sloppily in jeans, sneakers, and a sweatshirt with half a collar popping out (and who appeared to be the owner or manager BTW) sat at the opposite end of the bar, talking with the bartender and distracting her from us (her only customers). At one point the large man was talking loudly to a waitress asking her how many ravioli were on a plate; it was very weird to hear this conversation as paying customers sitting a few feet away. Then, a woman joined them at the end of the bar talking with the man and bartender and further distracting her from us. I had my credit card on the bar waiting to pay for about ten minutes - literally - couldn't even get a glance in our direction while the bartender started to eat a bowl of soup. Finally I had to wave and call her over; this was not a good sign of things to come, and if it wasn't for the fact that we were starving, I think we would have left. However, we stood up and walked to the front door by the maitre'd podium only to hear the large man say "thanks for stopping in." I replied that we were staying for dinner and the large man said "oh great" and got up, hobbled over, and walked us to our seats in the back corner of the empty restaurant without even asking if we had reservations. It was really like amateur hour. Then, much to our surprise, the woman from the bar who was chatting with the owner and bartender walked over, and surprise! - she was our waitress. At this point we really almost got up to leave, the vibe was just wrong. I made a point of telling the waitress that we had reservations and gave her my name, because I had made the reservations through Open Table and didn't want to be pegged as a no show because of the restaurant's lack of attention. Ater perusing the menu, I asked about the difference between two of the steaks listed - which had vastly different descriptions - and the waitress stammered something about the cuts of meat being different. Um, OK. We ordered lobster ravioli and calamari for apps and my hubby had the filet while I had a porter house steak for the main course. The apps were actually fine - not great but very passable, though I don't think either was freshly made. On the plus side, very large portions for the price. Our steaks came out and they were both pretty crispy, though I had asked for medium well and the inside was actually just right so can't complain. However, my steak and my hubby's filet were both completely tasteless - no seasoning whatsoever. Thankfully mine came with a really delicious chimichurri sauce, so I slathered my steak with that and was able to eat the whole steak. We both had fries, which were fine, though they had a mild taste of cinnamon or brown sugar. Meh. Overall, the food quality was simply OK - totally basic, nothing special, but not the worst we ever had. But the overall vibe and quality of service just really felt careless and like an after-thought - it certainly didn't seem that customer service or giving a good first impression with professional appearance was at the front of anyone's minds. And if the large man is indeed the owner or manager, I would strongly suggest that he step up his appearance and put on some nice clothes and at least try to give the impression that he cares about the place. He acted like he was lounging around in the living room of his house as opposed to running a business. I've seen more professional greeters at crappy cheap diners. read more

This was my first and last time there. First off our waitress talked so loudly it was almost comical ;especially since we were the only table in the entire restaurant so she had no background noise to contend with. She recommended the "bang bang" shrimp app that was $14 . When it arrived at the table it was barely breaded and most definetly didnt have bang bang sauce as explained and to top it off there were FOUR shrimp on the plate...FOUR medium sized shrimp It was accompanied by a slaw that was not appealing . When we had finished I saw an order of the shrimp going to two gentlemen seated at the bar , however there were 6 shrimp on the plate . I called the waitress over and she quppied oh they must have gotten a double order or maybe it's for the owner "Denny gets what Denny wants "... I thought that comment to be less than professional. The list could go on but just know 2 small apps a dessert and water (that was only filled half way and never filled again ) came to $50 save your money or eat at one of the better establishments uptown has to offer. I started with a special appetizer of Shrimp Vichi which I loved, but my wife didn't care for. Oh well it was my appetizer. We both had the Pan Seared Cod Served over a garlic spinach with different colored tomatoes and potato wedges that I believe were roasted first and the grilled. It was fresh, delicious, a large portion and the presentation was quite nice. Both agreed. The promoted $20 bottle of wine was excellent. Both Agreed. We ended with chocolate martinis for desert. You would think a guaranteed reservation for 12 people on a Wednesday night would be a draw for a restaurant, but alas, we had little to no response from the places in Kingston we called. Really? As this was for a fast approaching wedding dinner after what would be a very intimate ceremony with family, we started to panic. Where to go?? We decided to wander uptown and saw Chops Grille. We had never eaten here but thought what the heck. We walked in, talked to the owner, Denny, and voila, we were set up for our wedding dinner! Yes, it was that easy! We ate right then and there to be sure we liked the place, and yes, it was fabulous! The burger my fiance had was delish and my cod was flaky tender and both plates were huge! The ambiance was great and the service just right. On the day of our wedding when we arrived after the ceremony, Denny greeted us with a heartfelt congratulations, and he set up such a gorgeous table for our party. Every detail was accounted for. He had extra servers on hand, treated us to complimentary special off-the-menu appetizers as a wedding treat for us. All the food was prepared perfectly. Everyone, even my mother-in-law who is famously picky, loved her steak and loved the restaurant. She was even raving about it the next day, a sure sign that she genuinely liked it! We also had a wedding cake delivered, which they prepared for us on a separate table, beautifully presented for us to cut and share. All in all, we had a fantastic time that only could be had in a place where the service is impeccable and the owner, so thoughtful and hands-on. A nod to the chef, Frank, too, who came out and introduced himself and congratulated us. He was marvelous! We've been here several times since and always enjoy our food and time here. Great place to go any day, but if you're thinking of a place to go for a special occasion, definitely go to Chops Grille! They will make your occasion one to remember, and in a good way! read more

I traveled to Catskill with my friend during thr labor day holiday and had dinner in this place, the steak they served were just incredibly nice, along with some very impressive appetizer. I left my credit card there and their people are so nice that they mailed my lost card to my place! Probably the best steakhouse I have ever been after I was in the US! read more

Went this evening for a bite to eat - didn't want diner food or other fare - was pleasantly surprised at the delightful wine list. The service was superb - the waitress was a young lady who was especially helpful in her selection. We didn't have anything exotic, however, what we did order was very well prepared and truly exceptional. Would surely go back again. read more

My wife and I stopped by with another couple for a wonderful dinner. For starters we had the calamari, with an excellent sauce. Chef Frank and Denni pulled out the stops last night for a friends Birthday. Kung Pao Calamari was FanTabulous! The Black Angus steaks were cooked to perfection and the flavors were on par with Fine Steakhouses. The double cut lamb chops were exquisite. Chops Is located on the corner of John and Fair Streets in uptown Kingston, they're have been several different attempts at restaurants at this location in the last few years, one of the more popular being Portobellos. The interior is large and open and they have managed to keep the vintage, tiny-tiled floor in tact and clean. There is a small bar in the main room upon entering with a few tables but there are separate dining rooms both to the left and right for a more secluded and quiet dining experience. I also would think either room would be a great place for a small private gathering/party. On our visit we sat at the bar and were attended to by the owner in the beginning, as we arrived just as they were opening for their evening hours on a Monday and the staff had not yet shown up. The owner took our order and got us our drinks, he seemed a bit annoyed/grumpy but warmed up to us rather quickly and gave us all the details on how he acquired the space. (I can only imagine I would be grumpy too if my employees didn't show up on time). Soon after a server showed up followed, eventually, by the bartender. Both girls were very nice, friendly and attentive. Our food came out quick - Greek Village Salad was magnificent, whatever kind of feta cheese he uses is to die for! The Shroom'n Swiss Burger was juicy and full flavor, as well as the french fries. Monday nights is Mega Burger night and they offer specials on their burgers as well as wine and beer. read more

Enjoyed a date with my husband last night. We started out with drinks and appetizers. I had the pork wings which I've had before. They were good but not as good as I remembered the first two times I tried them. I got them teriyaki and they were a little salty. My husband enjoyed his Caesar salad. Had dinner here twice and both times were equally excellent. The fried calamari is amazing! The batter is seasoned to perfection, the tubes never chewy, and fra diavlo sauce is the perfect compliment. We enjoyed a delicious bottle of Malbec from the wine list after a hard time deciding from the extensive offerings. The brisket special was melt in your mouth delicious and the mashed potatoes (garlic and special cheddar bacon mashed) were great. Didn't have enough room to sample dessert. Wonderful food; great staff! We went to Chops to celebrate my son's birthday -- ate in the dining room. (I believe there is a slightly different menu for the bar area.) Appetizers (calamari, tempura shrimp and soup de jour) were super. True carnivores, were ordered pork chops, lamb chops and steak for entrees. Each was prepared perfectly and generously sized. Our server, Shelby, was a delight and it was so nice to have the owner check in with us during the evening. Only sad part -- no room for dessert! read more

You will have made a good choice if you dine at Chops Grille in Kingston. My husband & I arrived in Kingston to spend a few days in the Hudson Valley, on vacation from LA. Looking for a place to eat in Uptown Kingston we came soon Chops Grille. The menu looked wonderful, the environment was elegant and the service was very good and service was friendly. Our table was served hummus with pita bread. I ordered the Red Onion Soup with Cheddar cheese (delicious) and the Greek Salad with salmon. It was an authentic Greek salad (no lettuce) with the freshest of ingredients. The salmon was cooked perfectly. The rice pudding I had for dessert was topped with fresh creme and delicious. My husband enjoyed choosing a beer from their extensive bar menu and was very delighted with the amber ale he chose and he also found his Caesar salad with salmon very tasty. Everyone their wanted to be sure we had a good meal and a good time. Even the locals dining at Chops Grille were in conversation with the owner who made sure we had a good meal and wished us well in our travels. read more

Chops is a great spot with terrific atmosphere. I had the shrimp with papedelle which had a great sauce with a kick. My husband had the ny strip which he said was cooked to perfection. Chops Grille was excellent the first time I went there and continually gets better. When you first bite into the burger, you are taken aback because you are unaware what ground steak actually tastes like. After you have one of their burgers, you can't go back to others. I suggest the shroom burger with the red peppercorn sauce. The steaks are tender and delicious and actually cooked as asked for. No well done when you asked for medium rare. The restaurant itself is beautiful with old school charm and the waitstaff is excellent. The hostess, Laura, was very attentive, pleasant, and friendly. read more

This was one of our worst dIning experiences ever. We went there for my partner's birthday and we were supremely disappointed! We ordered the Greek salads - base price $16 then add $ 7 and $9 for chicken and salmon-- almost $25 and it was basically a bowl of tomatoes and cucumbers with a slab of feta cheese. And when we complained to our server that this was not all all what we expected from the description on the menu she gave us this rude and unconcerned attitude. The owner's attempts to address our concerns were anemic at best - no apologies, no offers to make it up to us..and he had the gall to ask us to spend even more money on more drinks. I've had the opportunity to dine at chops a few times while visiting family in Kingston. I feel like this place gets better, and better, each time I go in! The owner/manager Denni goes above and beyond, insuring that all of his customers have a fantastic dining experience. The calamari is some of the best I've ever had, and the portion size is more than generous. The food is always cooked to perfection, and the weekend specials are always out of this world good! I have been to other dining establishments in Kingston, but chops hands down takes the crown. This is a great restaurant in uptown Kingston. We've been twice for dinner and had a great meal both times. Our most recent visit (01/20/18) I had the bone in veal chop and my wife had the cod. My veal was the best and my wife loved the cod. The owner was welcoming and checked with us when we were leaving to see how we enjoyed our meals. We'll definitely be back. read more

With a highly train Executive Chef, I myself knowing about how good food should be prepared being raised in the fine dining restaurant business.I am also the bar manager of one of the finest Restaurants in ulster county, and I wanted to see if it was all that.. I stopped in the town of Kingston - a great little town off I-87. I stopped into Chops Grille for a bite. The wedge salad was delicious. The filet and sautéed spinach were spot on. The garlic mashed and fries were tasty too. Denny, the owner stopped by the table and made sure we were satisfied and took the time to ask more than the staple " is everything ok here?" He struck up a conversation and buttoned up the experience at his spot. Quick seating, solid service, great food and an owner that puts an effort into making sure his patrons are content. The restaurant was nice inside and the waitress was very very nice and caring. I was not a fan of the paper on the table. To me thats a bit tacky. I got a NY strip steak. It was originally under cooked however the waitress asked me to cut into it to see if it was to my liking. She took and back and they cooked it to how I like it. The steak was OK. It was a bit fatty and under seasoned. My fiance got a burger that was very very good. The mashed potatoes were delicious. Overall Id say Id say it was good. read more

I will be honest, we stumbled upon this place on the first night we were in town, and decided not to eat there. The vibe wasn't what we wanted. They had someone playing music, and it just felt stodgy...overall we were a bit turned off, and not sure why. But the weird thing is we kept thinking about the place, and we decided to give it a second chance. And we are glad we did! The vibe (without the entertainment) felt completely different. It was more crowded, and for some reason felt more welcoming. The place is nice looking, very bright and open. Anyway, we chose to sit in the bar area at a high top table, which was perfect. As for food, you must have the pork wings....yes I said pork wings. They were delicious and could have been a meal in itself. We saw lots of diners getting the calamari, and wished we had, it looked amazing, and everyone was raving about it. I had the sirloin, which was cooked to perfection, and the veggies weren't just a boiled side of mush. They were excellent! My husband had the pork chop, and it too was tender and delicious as well. The drinks and beer menu is quite nice, and as I said, the service is very friendly and efficient. If we are in the area gain, this will be on our list to eat at for sure! read more

A Prefect location , and nice Change from the other plain Restaurants in the area. We have been back several times, continue dine there. As soon as you walk in, you get a great vibe. From warm welcome from the Host / Owner Denni. The service is on the point. Especially The Bartender Steve who was very Professional , and a great sense of humor. The menu does change up, but thats a good thing. They still offer all the favorites like lamp lollipops app., Burgers, Steaks, & my Favorite the seared Tuna steak. If I could give them 10 stars I would. The food and wine were perfection and the staff could not have been more welcoming and professional. We were a large last minute party this past weekend. We came straight from a wake. We were all in mourning and just wanted a good dinner together to remember our uncle/brother. The staff was so courteous and kind. The kitchen staff even came out to offer their condolences. The food itself was comforting. The wine list was affordable and varied. My steak was done exactly as I ordered and was so tender I could have used the side of my fork to cut it. The rice pudding on the dessert menu is a family recipe and it was the best I've ever had. The location was beautiful and the atmosphere was relaxed and charming. I really cannot say enough about this beautiful family place. Go and eat there and you will see for yourself. read more

We went two Saturday's in a row... The first visit was amazing. We thought we found our next favorite place and last night was meh. The first meal perfection. They give out complimentary toasted pita and hummus which is tasty. At our first visit, I had the chopped burger and my husband had the 14 oz NY Strip steak. Both cooked perfectly and divine. Last night we both had the burger and they were overcooked and extremely salty and tasted like a diner burger (nothing special). Wine selection is good and place is very clean. There seems to be an older vibe of the clientele which is great bc even though we are not oldsters we are not hipsters either. Last week we would have given this place five plus stars but this week obviously we could not. Waitresses are very nice. read more
