Here's the problem -- the family who either owns it or just works together. The young busboy is fantastic, but the older gentleman and the female who yell at him in their native language, well ... it's a bit like watching the underdog of a film get bullied the entire time you eat for doing a really good job ... and for being helpful ... and for smiling. (the younger busboy in the family is the only courteous one) My fiance and I went here as our regular spot because the food is solid. Not great. Not seasoned to perfection or the best food on earth, but just good. However, after seeing the busboy get berated by this female relative right in front of customers not once, not twice, but three times .... even making him stop to apologize for what just walking by and getting too close to her (although she was taking up the entire lane, not just because of larger stature, but because she wouldn't move), we decided we had to find a new spot. You have to remember, part of eating out, a big part ... is the atmosphere. I love going out with the person I love, but neither of us can be happy watching this kind of harassment happen and not being able to actually *do* anything about it. My husband and I have been going to this diner for over twenty years, starting when it was located in Wappingers Falls, before it moved to Red Hook. We've never had a problem with the food or the service until a few weeks ago. There are two managers/owners: a man with dark hair and glasses, who's extremely kind and courteous, and a tall bald man, who is incredibly rude. A few weeks ago my friend arrived before me and was waiting for a table when it was crowded, and he yelled at her to 'get out of the way'. Then today when she asked to be seated at a booth away from the sunlight (she gets migraines), he flat out refused, called her 'hon', and told her to sit where he wanted. When I arrived I said we were longtime customers and didn't know why we were being treated so rudely, and he said 'Well I've been the owner since forever', as if that excuses his rudeness. He wasn't apologetic in the least, and didn't care if we stayed or left. We left and will never go back again. We went to Pete's Diner in Rhinebeck where the owner (a nice Greek lady) is actually friendly and polite. The service at the Historic Diner in Red Hook is also better. Actually anywhere is better than this diner, even the Dunkin Donuts next door!! read more

Five words for you BI SKITS AND GRAY VEE!!! Seriously though, I order biscuits and gravy all over the country and this by far the best that I've had in many many years. Hands down the best in the Northeast thus far. Who would have thought it would be in the Hudson Valley? Gravy is buttery, biscuits are soft and fluffy....mmmmmm. The Mrs had the standard breakfast of eggs, bacon, and French toast and all were just right. Service was not intrusive but right there to fill your coffee when you weren't looking. Clean facility (but the ladies restroom was closed) and I will definitely stop in on my way through Red Hook NY. read more

This diner has greatly improved since our initial visits. The food is good, as long as you stick to classic diner fare. I had the Belgian waffle with a side of sausage. The waffle was good, and the sausage delicious. The Greek salad is excellent, though the salad with grilled chicken was only so-so because the chicken was super overcooked to a shoe-leather texture. The panini are tasty, but the bread sometimes arrives scorched. The chicken souvlaki is solid, though you will get charged if you ask for extra dill sauce. The pickle that arrives with most of the meals is super briny and almost inedible. Service is mostly excellent, and that bumps up the rating to four stars. Still room to improve on the food. Please stop overcooking the grilled chicken! read more

The food was underwhelming and the service was not as friendly as you would expect from a small family diner. The food was simply mediocre with no characteristic taste or presentation. We ordered the peanut butter mousse pie that was in the cooler. It looked beautiful in the case, but then the server brought it to the back and returned with wet rediwhip sprayed on the sides. The pie had the consistency of dry wax, it was falling apart, tasted stale and dry, as if it was sitting there for a solid week. We sent it back. That's not the bad part though, the manager/owner was flipping out in the background and told the server not to throw the pie away. When we got up to counter to pay, he questioned us about it and told us that he found nothing wrong with the pie and pretty much just didn't believe that the pie was not good. read more

Usually a decent enough diner and convenient to the Cinema. However, today when I asked for lettuce and tomato instead of fries with my omelet I was told it was 75 cents extra. When I said I could not eat fries because I am diabetic the server said that is the policy. When I asked the manager he said in a nasty voice that that is the policy. We would have walked out but we had a movie to make, but we will never come back. From now on it's the Historic Diner, where they are nicer and the food is often better. Penny wise pound foolish. Not a fan. Service and atmosphere are nice enough. However, every breakfast I've had there was subpar. No flavor and quite pricey. 8.95 for a breakfast burrito which had eggs, large slices of greasy green peppers and onions and loaded with cheddar. I couldn't finish. Pancakes are flavorless and dry. Kids menu silver dollar pancakes were 6.50. Add chocolate chips =1.50. Much prefer the Elizaville or Village of Red Hook (when one can find parking) diners or Kings Highway in Kingston. read more

Excellent customer service, excellent food! It's been ages since I've gone to a diner, but I would definitely stop in here again! The portions are huge, & all four of us enjoyed our meals. From burgers to breakfast platters, we were all pleased (which is hard to do)! When deciding what side dishes to have, my father had said he'd never tried turkey sausage patties, so the owner brought out a plate for us to try, free of charge! This wobbles on a 3 rating. My husband ordered an omelet with home fries. The home fries were black on the edges so I asked them to substitute it with potato salad (since we were there for brunch) They came and gave him a plate but also gave me the wide eyed look of disbelief before doing so. I let that slide and while we were eating there (there wasn't more than 2 other tables) the crew in the back gathered over the counter and were yelling and laughing having a little party. I ordered tuna salad triple decker with potato salad it was very good. A huge quantity I brought the rest home for dinner, it had a nice side of pickle and coleslaw which seemed very fresh. Had breakfast with my wife and daughter and wasn't that impressed with the meal. The eggs were so so and the home fries soggy and way too much paprika!! Home fries should be crisp and seasoned with salt and pepper . The bacon wasn't crisp either!! Overall I don't think I will be back there anytime soon.. Very disappointed ! read more

Bathroom was clean, service was fast, and the fries were okay. Those are the reasons I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1. I ordered the veggie burger with cheddar and mushrooms. I've had a lot of veggie burgers since I've been vegetarian since 1999 but this was one of the worst I've tasted. The mushrooms seemed like they were canned. This place is a rip off. We came here as first time customers and the menu looked pretty nice at first. Egg sandwich around $4.50 spinach omelette around $8. We ordered a spinach omelette- I just asked to change the feta cheese with the Swiss cheese, cause I am pregnant. My husband ordered biscuits and gravy. Our son just a simple egg sandwich. One kid soda, one super small orange juice and a small ice tea. Our bill came out at almost $40!!!!!! We couldn't believe it. I checked and they charged me for BYO (build your own) spinach omelette (what???? Just cause I changed feta cheese with Swiss cheese????) which it went almost to $10. They charged 2 eggs at $4.50 on my husband plate, when it is usually included. They charged almost $3 for a super tiny orange juice and almost $3 for a super small kids soda. They charged extra for the egg sandwich of our kid. I have NEVER EVER EVER EVER seen a diner charging SOOOOOO much money for eggs and few sodas, not even in Brooklyn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's absolutely absurd. The waiter, a lady with glasses and short hair, didn't even care so much or even explained all these "extra" charges and why. We will never go back to this place and will never recommend this place to anyone. Worst customer service ever and rip off on the prices. Since I have been working my way through the menu there is nothing I've had that even remotely disappoints (I definitely recommend the wraps though). This review was writin while sitting at the Eveready Diner 20 minutes away from this diner. I will start off by saying that I've eating here a handful of times and the food has been all right, so this review is not based on food. My partner has a chronic eye condition that, among other things causes him to have a sensitivity to lights, so to combat that he wears special sunglasses in any well lit area. I was seated first while he went to the bathroom, upon coming out he was looking for me. I was in the booth to the right of the restrooms as he was looking to the left. A waitress from behind the counter pointed him in my direction, then as she was walking away says, "Maybe if you take your sunglasses off you'd see." None of the other wait staff acknowledged her, so she turned to the manager who was sitting at the counter and said, "Hey did you hear what I said, he was looking for his friend and I said if he'd take his sunglasses off he'll see. I mean like really?!" The two shared a chuckle and at that point my partner and I got up and left. As we were leaving I told the manager to have a good night. Upon getting to the car I felt the need to talk to the manager because I feel he did not understand why we left, which he didn't. When I went back the manager was outside having a cigarette. I approached him and told him what had happened and why this upset us (explaining the eye condition.) He proceeded to tell me that the waitress has a "big mouth" and that after he finished his cigarette he would talk to her. Being a chef for the past 6 years and a waiter for 3 years prior I would have put customers before a cigarette, but that's just me. He then told me that the next time we come in to ask for him and he would wait on us personally, which shouldn't have to be the solution. I should be able to go any restaurant and not have waitstaff make smart aleck comments, and then boasting about it like a grade school bully. Fortunately I will never have to ask him to wait on us, when I want to go to a diner and the Historic Diner down the street is closed I'm going to make the trek to the Eveready Diner. Having been to many diners, I thought that the Red Hook would hold up better than some of its competitors; the interior was very nice, and was packed when my family and I went. However, this restaurants true colors were revealed when we ordered food. First off, the service was spotty, and our waiter was a bit odd, often handing food TO ME to hand to the other people at the table. Second, the food itself was disappointing. The buffalo wings we ordered were very fatty, and everything else was sub-par: the menu didn't even contain macaroni and cheese, which is something I'd assumed would be on most diner's menus. All in all, my family and I won't be coming back to the Red Hook Diner, unless they are able to make themselves stand out against similar restaurants in the area. read more

we are very disappointed. my boyfriend and i would come here on occasion and have actually had a decent experience. tonight, we ordered a few things for takeout. i was rather clear on the phone of what we wanted but apparently it wasn't understood. we ordered exactly this: a ranch chicken panini with no tomato, a regular bacon cheese burger with american cheese (cooked medium) and a full stack of french toast deluxe with scrambled eggs and bacon. we went in to pick up our order and we were just stared at by 2 employees until a 3rd came out to finally help us. she handed the receipt to the man and he didn't say a word to us the whole interaction. we got home to enjoy our meal but let me tell you-- it wasn't very enjoyable. my panini had lots of soggy tomatoes on it, making the bread just soggy and wet and the bacon was floppy and brown. my boyfriend didn't get any bacon on his cheeseburger, which was also dry and well done, and his scrambled eggs looked like a floppy pancake and was a portion for a 2 year old. then there's the bag with all the condiments. everything was sticky. the "pickles" they put in there were just plain cucumbers. the butter packets were half open, there was syrup on everything and like 2 tiny packets of ketchup. we won't be coming here for a long while. read more

OK...maybe this should be two stars, because the place is at least clean and pleasant. But the breakfast I had this weekend will keep me away forever. Sunnyside eggs does not mean the whites (and yolks, even) are partially uncooked, but mine were. When I asked the eggs to be cooked more, they were returned with the fried side cook to death...there is a trick to cooking eggs this way, but they don't know it. Now the home fries: how can the potatoes be undercooked (big half-cooked chunks) AND charred black (i.e. not brown and crispy)? But that's how you get 'em at Red Hook Diner. The explanation in both cases is that everything is cooked too fast. Finally, there were the ginormous breakfast sausages, so heavily saged it was like eating a Christmas tree. I called in a to go order, was immediately put on hold then disconnected. After calling back the same lady was not only rude, unapologetic but downright nasty. I would have hung up immediately except for the fact that my elderly, sick mother really wanted a fish sandwich. My brother picked up the order, $20 for 2 fish patty's on a roll w/ fries. He asked for extra ketchup, to which she replied she put everything in the bag including salt and pepper. When he got home & we opened the bags, inside there was no ketchup or salt and pepper. This has to be the absolute worst fish sandwich I ever purchased. My mother could not even eat it. Let me also say that my mother is new to the area and has frequently gone to that diner, after this experience she will no longer. This complaint is mostly about the "owner" behind the counter that answers the phone and rings people out, she should really retire, she has no people skills. read more

After working in the area today my helper and I stopped for something to eat. We both opted to have breakfast for lunch. We both had wonderful breakfast.
