I had the pleasure of eating here this last Saturday and this is the 3rd time I had dinner at Red Ash. I will say the grilled sourdough and burrata appetizer is really second to none. If you like a garlicky, perfectly toasted piece of bread with your burrata...look no further. Also had the short rib special and that was very nice as well. I do not eat out often due to salt content and this place is no exception. This place is good but there are A LOT of good restaurants in Austin. I do not know why this place is so hard to get a reservation. You will also not get sat until the very minute of your reservation so if you are thinking you will get there early and have a drink...DON'T! You will stand, awkwardly in front of the entrance door with a group that thought they would have a drink too. The bar also needs a reservation so there is no social aspect to this except eating and conversing with the party you are having dinner with. This may be the new normal after Covid but it reminds of why people are so unhappy now. Staff is friendly however. This place is a good restaurant, just not a great one. read more

First time here after hearing about it for many months. First the good news, food is very good, service was attentive and friendly, wine selection is good, and a full bar with featured craft cocktails. But, the restaurant is loud, which I had read in reviews prior to going, but it is loud to the point that six of us couldn't have a conversation at a small table, and the Server had to lean in very close to hear our requests. This is so easily fixed it would seem obvious to the owners that some sound deadening features would improve the experience. Second, we were seated upstairs, and all of a sudden the temperature rises and becomes almost uncomfortable. (At "uncomfortable", I walk out). Server said it is a known issue. If eating out is about the food and experience, Red Ash is falling down on half the equation. Table ordered garlic bread, which was raved about in reviews. It was good, but I am not convinced that flying bread dough from New York is worth it. With amazing Cottage Bakers in Austin, sourcing local will likely lead to better bread and be more sustainable. Risotto with mushrooms and bone marrow was great, as was the lobster pasta. Reflecting on it, probably not returning until I hear the environment issues are resolved. read more

Pretty awful experience. Came for anniversary with my partner. Got gnocchi and pasta. Ended up with a different dish that looked remarkably similar and got an allergic reaction. Potentially on me for not being able to recognize the different pasta categories, but serving a Hindu who eats no beef and a jewish man who eats no pork and is allergic to truffles/mushrooms a dish with all 3 led to a pretty poor anniversary. Got a sorry about that and they removed it from the check, but like come on, the 30$ cost was not really the issue... The meal was expensive but the epipen was more expensive. Snagged a last minute reservation on OpenTable at the bar. Our server/bartender was very nice, helpful when it came to helping my vegan boyfriend find options. He wasn't originally coming with me but my sister couldn't make it. We knew the menu did not denote vegan options so we hoped they would accommodate. The bread can be vegan without the spread they add and olive/oil and balsamic instead. For entree spaghetti with no cheese and the vegetable platter. He wasn't very hungry and only ordered the veggie platter. Listen I know it sounds insane to just order veggies but they actually were very good seasoned well. As a local dining guide, I found the food at Red Ash to be truly exquisite and the atmosphere to be equivalent to, if not better than, some of my memories dining in Manhattan. Every dish had an abundance of flavor; however, the dining experience is not ideal for a date night, as many dishes are family portioned and not suitable for couples. We dined on a Saturday night and the restaurant was very lively. Service was impeccable, with multiple bussers and food runners across the team keeping things moving with frequent checkpoints, though with how busy things were, there wasn't much time to chat with guests (which is understandable for their peak night). Forest, our waiter, touched the table at all the right times and struck a rare balance of professionalism and fun -- it was clear he had years of great experience. A special shout-out to Ivana, a food runner, who brought such kind energy to our table and took a moment to chat with us. That said, I was surprised that at no point during the evening did any manager come by our table. One area where I can see improvement is with the wood-fired aged meats. All cuts are priced by the ounce ($4.75/oz) and we were excited to try them, but the steak we originally wanted had a 40oz minimum -- far too much for most couples to consider. A 30oz cut was the smallest available, which was delicious but still not approachable for two people looking to try a variety of items on the menu. I've also heard from other guests that it's nearly impossible to get a reservation (we didn't personally face that challenge, and are thankful, but many say it's an issue). I often book day-of reservations for clients and I imagine this would pose a challenge. Combined with the portion sizes and a $350 bill for two people, I'm not sure if we'd return. Overall, Red Ash is a lively restaurant with outstanding food. I'd recommend it for groups or celebrations, but for couples, it is not ideal. read more

I could only imagine how stellar their Wagyu and dry-aged options steaks are. The wedge salad was refreshing and delicious, not too heavy with all of the blue cheese I love. The garlic bread was perfect. Great friendly service. Just as pleasing is the venue itself: modern and stylish with its partially graffitied concrete wall, but not dying to be hip or making it a caricature of itself. Waited many months to come here (original reservation was before the fire). The restaurant was lovely and service was friendly and professional. Overall, everything was delicious. My husband and I split the Caesar salad. It was a large serving, more than plenty for 2 or could even serve 4 if everyone wanted just 2 or 3 leaves. The leaves are small "gem" lettuce, each leaf left whole for cutting with your knife. Each leaf is individually decorated with dressing, shaved Parmesan cheese and thin sliced croutons. Very good! Our friends ordered the squash blossoms. I had never heard of them before. I think they are the bud/plant that would turn into a squash if it were left in the ground to grow. It was coated in a batter of some kind and looked to be deep fried. It came with a marinara sauce for dipping. She said they were good but wouldn't be inclined to order again. Four of us ordered the hot crunchy country Italian bread. It is charged by the slice so you can order as much or as little as you want for the table. It was delicious! It's a very thick slice of freshly made warm bread with olive oil, garlic and some sprinkled, melted cheese. So yummy! The spaghetti is ordered with or without meatballs and you can get a small portion or large. My husband got the large with meatballs. It was delicious. Very big portion so he had enough to take home for a generous second dinner. I ordered the bolognese (large, also enough for two meals). I enjoyed it. The fresh pasta was yummy. I was a little surprised it was more of a brown gravy sort of sauce rather than a red tomato based sauce. It was still enjoyable but not exactly as I would have preferred. Our friend ordered the pasta with sausage. She felt it was too al dente, to the point of being undercooked. It wasn't enough to send it back but it did affect her full enjoyment of the meal. This is a wood fire Italian restaurant downtown with limited street parking. The restaurant itself is very nice - it has two stories with a stairwell built in the middle and lots of wood and stone interiors. I booked my reservation 3 months in advance, but they were very flexible when I had to make a change the day of to push my reservation back an hour. Just leave a message on their phone and they get back to you very quickly. Service - was okay, I felt like everyone we interacted with was a bit tired or cold to us, and made me feel like we didn't really belong. Their attention to detail was not great. Crispy Italian Bread ($4) - this was fantastic, it was super soft and the crust was very crispy. It was covered in garlic, basil, green onions, and hard to resist. Definitely get this as it's such a good deal. Wood roasted beef bone marrow ($24) - there was very little bone marrow, maybe 3 small spoonfuls. I'm not an experienced bone marrow eater but it just seemed pretentious and overpriced. The flavor was good but at $24 I would absolutely pass on this. It came with two pieces of the same garlic bread but we were already full up on bread. Taglioni with fresh blue crab ($42) - the flavor was very good, lemony, tangy, but I thought it was kind of gross that it was sitting in like 2 cups of olive oil. Just a very oily dish. I ate about half so it is a massive plate and you will definitely have left overs. Spaghetti Alla Chitarra with wood roasted meatballs ($28) - this is a standard red sauce with meatballs. It was good but not the most unique dish. Again huge portions, you could easily share this with 2 people. For our anniversary, they let us pick out a dessert free of charge which is very nice. We picked the Hot Apple Crostata (normally $12) - easily shareable amongst 2 or 3 people. It was a perfect blend of hot and cold, sweet and tangy. Always order the garlic bread-- I've even ordered it togo after a meal for the next day. The beef here is another highlight. It's dry-aged and cooked to perfectly to order in their wood-fired oven, which gives it another layer of flavor. The pasta is freshly made in-house, and you can really taste the difference. Every dish is top-notch, and the flavors are always spot on. The cocktails are fantastic as well--really well-balanced and refreshing. The ambiance is perfect for a romantic evening--dimly lit, cozy, and intimate. It's the kind of place where you can really enjoy a relaxed, yet elevated dining experience. Booked way in advance for my partner's birthday dinner and wow.....this place completely exceeded our expectations! From being given a birthday card signed by the whole staff, to the candles on the dessert and the complimentary post-meal champagne, they went above and beyond to make him feel special. Our waitress recommended the smoked trout starter, as it was fairly new to the menu, and it blew me away. I could've eaten just four more plates of it. Definitely the best cooked fish I've ever had. Other dishes were the bone marrow, risotto, beef carpaccio, and for the pasta - rigatoni and agnolotti. All were outstanding. The only thing I wouldn't order again is the bone marrow, but that's just a personal thing with the texture. The tiramisu was the best I've tried. We went here for our anniversary and it was everything we were told it was. I understand the month out wait for reservations. We got the fried squash blossoms and they were so delicate and creamy on the inside as well as they roasted tomatoes and burrata with a side of the Italian bread. The acidity of the tomatoes and the creaminess of the burrata were a perfect combination. For our mains we got the tagliatelle allá bolognese and it was incredibly flavorful, obviously the pasta was perfectly Al dente and the sauce had so much depth. The only thing keeping it from a 5 was our waiter, we think maybe he was sick so maybe that's why he left us for so long, but we didn't get dessert because by the time he came back to us after giving us our food it had been so much time that we needed the check and couldn't wait anymore to get home to our babysitter. read more

Unfortunately I got really sick right before my birthday and needed to cancel. Fortunately I could find a bar seating 2 weeks after. The ambiance is romantic. Our bartender/server was very attentive and nice. My favorite dish is the burrata appetizer and the apple crostata dessert. The bread was also amazing. I thought the pollo alla diavolo entree was a bit too oily. Altho the bread that came with the dish was perfect to soak all the oil. The agnolotti pasta was pretty yummy, altho I feel it'd be better without the carrots. Unfortunately even though I marked my reservation as my birthday celebration, they didn't serve my dessert with a candle. The ambience was classy and romantic and the wood fire grill was fun to watch as the chefs cooked multiple beautiful dishes in it. The drinks and appetizers are a preview of how amazing your meal will be. We got the garlic bread and meatballs, which melted in your mouth. My husband said the filet mignon steaks were "the best he's ever had" and has since compared others to Red Ash and how they don't live up to them. We will definitely be returning. My boyfriend made a reservation back in Dec, so we waited about 2 months. It's quite lively in the restaurant with the open kitchen concept, so don't expect a quiet dinner. We ordered the Bolognese, spaghetti with meatballs, wood roasted bruschetta with steak trimmings, sweet corn risotto and an espresso affogato to top it all off. We called and were able to score two seats at the "chef's table" which was cool but they didn't even acknowledge us or do anything amazing so not sure why it's a treat (if it is). Both were absolutely delicious. And filling... so it was more than enough for two people. Probably best for three to four individuals. I had the frutti de mare (seafood pasta) and my wife had the capelletti "bishop's hats" pasta. I quite enjoyed the seafood and the noodles. My wife thought her pasta was just okay. I did have a cocktail, but can't remember what is was because it was a special that day and then we ordered a Sangiovese bottle of wine that was perfect with our meal. We did get dessert (on the house because it was our anniversary) and I had the blood orange sorbet and my wife had the chocolate cake with peanut butter inside. She loved it! We were a party of 3 (Siblings) when we were there on Monday the 21st and the restaurant was packed even if we were there for late dinner. Woohoo! No wonder the food was simply the best! The day I found out they had San Danielle and Burrata, it became my favorite Italian place in Austin. Being from France, San Danielle was my absolute favorite type of ham, and it brought me so much joy to get it here. They also import it straight from Italy. Please trust me, do get that. Another small plates you shouldn't miss out on: the oven bake harbison cheese "fonduta" with shaved truffles...omg! The agnolotti piemontese style truffle ravioli is my favorite. For that reason, I haven't tried much else to be honest. But don't worry, if you go with amy pasta, you're making the right choice. I'm a small girl and I can easily get the bigger size plate and bring the last few bites home, so don't be scared, unless you're sharing tons of small plates. The cesar salad is also good if you need something fresh. The drinks aren't cheap, but their spanish G&T is delish and they have a good wine selection. Another great meal at Red Ash. We spent Halloween at Red Ash and I regret nothing. Was it spooky? no. Was the atmosphere chilling? Also no, although the bartenders were pretty busy and didn't have a ton of time to chat. We loaded up on apps, because there were just too many options: meatballs, Italian bread, and octopus a la plancha. The octopus was much, much better than I was expecting, with a wonderfully meaty texture. Not the best I've ever had, but certainly the best in Austin. We then split orders of agnolotti and capelletti. Pro tip: Nearly all of the pasta can be ordered as a 1/2 order. I'd recommend it, as they're all pretty filling. It also gives you the opportunity to try more of the menu! We were split on the pasta, both dishes were good, but I preferred the agnolotti, while my wife loved the capelletti. Red Ash was great! We didn't have reservations, but we called ahead and were still able to get seated at the bar. The bar service was great, and they were very attentive to refilling our drinks and taking plates out of the way. The ambiance was also lovely. There was dim lighting, and the restaurant was full of lively chatter. We ordered the 10oz filet topped with crab and cheese fondue and the seafood pasta, along with the garlic bread for an appetizer and the white peach sorbet and chocolate molten cake with ice cream for dessert. The filet was great. It was one of the most tender steaks I've ever had, but it lacked a bit of flavor and seasoning. The crab and cheese fondue was overpowering to the flavor of the steak, and I would recommend ordering the steak without it. The garlic bread was fresh and crispy, and the garlic spread was delicious. I would recommend ordering that as an appetizer. The pieces are big, and the pricing is per piece. The seafood pasta was great as well. It had a spicy marinara sauce and had lots of seafood. For dessert, the white peach sorbet is cheap, but nothing to write home about. It has chunks of white peach within it which is pleasant, but it has a strange flavor. I would not order it again. The chocolate molten cake was a standout. It had peanut butter and chocolate in the middle, and I enjoyed that the ice cream was placed on the side to avoid it melting. It tasted slightly of coconut and was a nice and refreshing contrast to the heaviness of the cake. Together, they were a delicious combo. If I were to go back, I would get the bread, cake, and steak again. The bone marrow also looked delicious, so that's on my list to try next visit. 10/10 recommend for a nice date night or a night out with friends. The food was amazing, we got the tomahawk steak and it was probably one of the best steaks we've ever had. Crabs spaghetti was amazing, everything we ordered was amazing!!
