I was in downtown Denver for a work trip, and I needed a place to have a fancy dinner with one of my dearest friends who lives in town and whom I had not seen in a number of years. range had exactly the vibe I was looking for: elevated without being stuffy, inventive in its food and drink options while still serving good-sized portions. The hotel in which it is located, the Renaissance Denver Downtown City Center, has a beautiful lobby. Our reservation at range was for 7 pm, and I arrived a few minutes early and enjoyed sitting in the lobby bar area while I waited for my friend. The happy hour musician singing and playing his electric guitar closed his set with Garth Brooks's "Friends in Low Places," which might seem incongruous with the posh atmosphere of the hotel, but was actually perfect. My friend and I talked nonstop for the entire two hours of our dinner, and our server did a great job of being attentive without being disruptive. We ordered a bottle of wine to share, steak mains, and a cocktail each, which came to a total of $170 before tip. $85 a person before tip seemed reasonable to me for a delicious, special-occasion meal. Do people not eat dinner late in downtown Denver? I was surprised that the restaurant closed at 9 pm. It was hopping when we arrived at 7 pm, and I was glad that I had made a reservation on OpenTable. When we closed the place down at 9 pm, we were among the only patrons left. read more

I stopped at Range after checking out a comedy show. It was one of the few places nearby open later! It was pretty quiet upon entering but the staff was very friendly and seated us promptly and took our order. We started with the elote corn and chèvre dip and bacon wrapped jalapeños stuffed with goat cheese. The dip was meh, but I think that was my personal taste. The chèvre was just really pungent but overall it wasn't bad. The jalapeños were really good! Goat cheese can sometimes be too much but these were perfect and creamy with a hint of spice. They're huge and come with 4 full jalapeños so be prepared to share. Next up my husband and I shared the scallops and a wedge salad. The wedge salad was a more modern take on the traditional with 3 baby wedges instead of one huge piece. It was so tasty!! I would order that again and again. The scallops were perfectly cooked and fantastic! The ambiance inside is a little tired and could use a refresh but the food and wine is delicious so it's easy to ignore. I'm in Denver every few months or so for work and have wanted to try to Range for awhile. Yesterday I finally got my chance. It is in the Renaissance Hotel which is happens to be an old bank. The interior of the hotel lobby is truly classy and grand and I love walking around gazing at the absolutely beautiful vaulted ceilings. When I finally wandered into the restaurant I was already in a good mood. I sat in the bar area which is a pretty large portion of the restaurant. They had a great happy hour menu which includes a bunch of food items and several drinks. I had a glass of wine and the Brussels sprouts while waiting for main dinner to arrive. The sprouts were fantastic and not to be missed. I had the wagyu meatloaf for my main dinner which was also very good. On my final night staying at the Renaissance in downtown Denver, I decided to dine at Range. Although the prices were very high, that was to be expected at a hotel restaurant. I arrived about a half hour before they were closing. I looked at the menu ahead of time so I would be able to order right away and not keep anyone. The host was kind and escorted me right to my seat without a reservation, but also reminded me that they were closing soon. The tables are pretty close to one another as it is a smaller restaurant. I had a quick burrata salad appetizer followed by the salmon. My usual order. I would've liked a martini as well, however that went over my daily budget. Maybe next time. The service was great, everyone was kind. I was able to be in and out in a half hour with the entire meal devoured. I would definitely eat here again if I was in town. All I can say is Wow! We had stayed at this hotel before but never taken the opportunity to dine at Range. I'll be honest as someone who travels a lot for work I've always avoided hotel restaurants because I've always walked away wanting more and overpaying but I truly underestimated this place. First we were able to valet our car for free with validation from the restaurant which is such a bonus for downtown dining. Our waitress, Heather was so kind and helped recommend many dishes that were so amazing. Heather selected the Elote Dip for our appetizer. It was so glutinous and creamy but really highlighted the corn in such a great way. We both enjoyed a few drinks, an old fashioned and a French 75 which were both well concocted and delicious. We then moved to our mains. We chose to share the Diver Scallops & the Short Rib. The scallops were seared perfectly & the lemon meyer emulsion paired perfectly with it. Now for my favorite part, the short rib.....you have to try the short rib. It was literally melt in your mouth perfection. The polenta was creamy and cheesy, the carrots were the perfect crunch for the entree. Do yourself a favor and get the short rib. And even though we were stuffed we couldn't pass up the Bourbon Bananas Foster Bread Pudding, the entire amazing dessert put me back in the south and to top off the night our server knew we were celebrating my birthday and put a candle on top of our dessert. Parking is horrendous in this area...thank god for a relatively cheap parking garage next to the restaurant. $6 for a weekend night? Perfect. It was a bit weird walking into a lobby of a hotel that we weren't staying at to have dinner but the reviews and pics from my fellow yelpers gave me strength to try something new. The attire was a mix of dressy casual and wayyyy casual. We were seated right when we walked in. Selections of apps to share, apps for yourself, and main dishes. Great wine and local beer selection. We got the bacon jam flat bread to start and it was tasty. A bit thin on the toppings though. For my main course I had the scallops that were served on this sweet potato purée and the combination was very delicious. One of the best scallop dishes I've had. Too bad the jalapeño peppers and the beef carpaccio were so tasteless. The dessert made us happy again: the decadent smores tart. The marshmallow top was slightly burned and really elevated the dessert's flavors. To sum up: my main dish was great but the appetizers and other small dishes were less than desirable. I used to love this place for happy hour. I don't know what they've done to the Happy Hour menu though (or rather, why). The drinks are still good, but all the good food I remember being on it is gone. Unless you're a fan of fish tacos -- which I'm not huge on. The loaded baked potatoes, which were one of my favorites in Denver, are gone. Now you can get brussel sprouts and habanero bacon -- which every hipster restaurant has these days. Would I come here for a regular dinner? With cocktails at $15, wines at $50+, and entrees at about $30 (the lamb, which I think was the best thing on the entree list, is $38)... I'm not sure. The happy hour cocktails are pretty awesome, it's a cool space, and the service is great, but the price difference between HH and dinner is pretty big. read more

We had the charcuterie board for an app- the meat was chewy and hard, the blue cheese and goat cheese was good but the third cheese was hard and unable to eat. Had a wonderful private dinner event in the vault. Party of 9 with a prix fixe menu. The private room is inside an old bank vault. The room has great decor. The table had comfortable swivel chairs. The appetizer were beyond expectations. Hush puppies with a mango salsa, a meat plate with chorizo and duck prosciutto, and a trout spread on toast. The first course was green chile bisque and a few salad choices. The soup was great. Second course we mostly chose bison ribs and hangar skirt steak. Overall food was 5 stars. Service was 4 stars. Oh wow, I did not expect to be this brought down by the food. I mean the restaurant is beautifully located in a beautiful downtown hotel, valet parking is included if you dine here. The bathrooms are a bit out of the way and involves taking the elevators downstairs but up to this point everything was promising. I should've known to lower expectation when I asked our server if the menu item "White Bass" means Chilean Sea Bass or Colorado Striped Bass (as the difference is miles apart), she responded with a short "Sure!" (WTH does that even mean? I hate it when people answer questions that way). Of course it wasn't Chilean Sea Bass (even though the price tag suggested it could've been) and I'm never impressed with other types of Bass so the dish is a pass for me. Since we were in the mood for seafood, we also ordered a Pallae. With all sorts of ingredients that scream Umami (shrimp! chorizo!! mushrooms!!!), how did they manage to come up with something so tasteless? I had a ray of hope when I saw this menu item that I'd taste somewhat authentic Pallae, well, the verdict is it's worse than "Americanized Pallae". At least dessert was better: Warm Chocolate Espresso Cake. But, I really doubt you'd need to be sitting at a fancy hotel for this kind of gooey dessert. read more

Both were severely underwhelming, to the point where neither of us finished them. Quality of the meat was just not on par with other comparable restaurants at the same price point. We really wanted to like this place. It just doesn't WOW us, at all. We ate here the morning after our wedding--it would have been fun to tell our waiter we had just gotten married and been offered something celebratory but nope. That's not why I'm leaving 2 stars though--I'm not in the business of ranking lower due to lack of free stuff. The 2 stars is due to the lack of good service, friendliness and good food. Our waiter visited our table maybe 4 times--to get drink order, bring drinks, get food order, and bring our check. If we had needed anything, it would have been hard to flag down our waiter, as I didn't even see him when he wasn't at our table. Overall, service was just not great and we didn't feel very welcomed. It seemed like an inconvenience for the host to tell me where the bathrooms were (which are through the hotel lobby, down a staircase and down a hall....so not like I could have found them on my own). The food was mediocre. Denver has a ton of awesome brunch places but this is not one of them. It is severely overpriced--$10 for mediocre coffee for 2?? My husband and I each got a skillet and it wasn't bad--we finished them--but I was just expecting something so much better for the price. It needed more flavor--I smothered mine in hot sauce to make up for it. We did get little smoothie shooters at the end of our meal, which I think are complimentary to everyone, and they were good and a refreshing end to the meal. We will probably not be back. read more

In Renaissance Hotel lobby. Ate a very early light dinner here. Atmosphere is very nice- not a large place but cozy. Had drinks to start which were basic beer and house wine- both delivered cold and quick. Had the Caesar Salad which was delicious, and had a little different spin on it as it had some roasted tomatoes served with 2 crostini. Hamburger with cheese was ordered medium rare and did not disappoint served w French fries which were cooked perfectly ( plus lettuce, tomatoes and pickle). My buddy and I gave this place a try before a show at the Bellco Theater. Outside of some the lower rated reviews we had a fabulous time here. Our server was friendly and attentive. The food was great and so were the drinks. My meal was good but my friend ordered the steak (something or other) and he said it was one of the best meals that he's ever had. I believe him, it looked delicious. Overall we had an excellent time here and we would definitely go back. I thought the flat iron steak could've had more seasoning/flavor and I didn't care for the sauce that came with it. Six of us visited Range on a Thursday around 6. They did not seem very busy at first. The fryer was out so several things we wanted to try were not available. Service was slow at the beginning of our experience. We were given menus but it was quite a while before anything else happened. Most of our party had wine but there is a cocktail menu also. We shared lots of appetizers and they were all excellent (Range Board, warm elote corn dip, crispy Brussel sprouts and the ceviche). The ceviche and corn dip were truly excellent. one of us had the pork chili (good) and another the wedge salad, which is three portions and "fine." For dinner one person had the scallops (she said they were great), one the Colorado bison ribeye (which was excellent). Two of us had the angus filet (the medium rare was rare and the medium was served medium rare so beware). We tried an espresso martini with dessert but found it much too sweet and left it alone. The atmosphere is really very nice and the food very good! We'd be happy to return. read more

The scallops I had were perfectly cooked, but the rice it came with was bland and undercooked. One person's chicken was overdone. When food and drinks came to the table, everyone who delivered food or drinks seemed confused about where they went and who ordered what, eventually having to "auction off" items at the table--and it happened for every item we ordered all night. I recently went to Range for lunch with my work group. Service was very good & everything on the menu looked delicious (pricey, but it was on the company's dime so that wasn't as much of a concern). Because everything on the menu sounded so good, I had a rough time choosing what I wanted. I finally chose the shrimp & grits, but when I gave my order to the waitress, she said that they were out and it wasn't available :( which confused me because we went to lunch at 11:30 AM, making us one of the first groups in the restaurant. So, instead I got the Gnocchi Truffle Mac & Cheese with added shrimp - which was a small, yet filling delicious portion! (Sorry no photos :( ) The meal ended with delicious gluten-free chocolate chip cookies - SO soft & tasty! While visiting Denver for a quick trip before moving out here official in September, I was eager to try range. I had bookmarked the restaurant on Yelp weeks earlier and was excited to go. My friend and I made a 7 pm reservation on a Saturday night, and though it wasn't packed, we were happy we had made the reservation. Our waiter Doug was wonderful - he described the menu items perfectly and wasn't overly attentive, yet always seemed to be around at the right time to fill up our drinks or clear dishes. We started with the Caesar salad and Brussels sprouts, both of which were wonderful. The Brussels dish was large and could have easily been shared, but I'm a huge fan of the vegetable so I happily ate the entire thing. We were both really happy with our entrees as well; the roasted chicken for me and the steak and potato mash for my friend. When Doug brought out the dessert menu and I saw pecan bread pudding listed, I knew I had to indulge despite being pretty full from dinner. Served in a cast iron dish and accompanied by cinnamon ice cream, it was just as good if not better than he described. I would go back for the bread pudding alone! Overall, we had a great night. Range is delicious! I have been twice before seeing a show at the DCPA and was so impressed both times. They have an incredible happy hour for both food and drinks and their happy hour goes until 7:00! I have tried most of their happy hour food (and there is a lot) and I would order almost all of it again. I will definitely be trying the flatbreads on my next visit. We love to sit at the bar because Fabian is our favorite!! On their dinner menu, the toasted gnocchi "mac n cheese" is SO good! An added bonus is that they offer free valet parking on the night of your DCPA show! It is the perfect pre-show dinner and is a short walk to the theater. read more

This place is terrible. I ordered a draft beer, and it came to table an inch low which is less than 12oz. I explained that a pint should be at least 16 ounces, SA agreed and sent it back for a new one. Second one came in a clearly dirty glass and tasted like soap. Finally settled on just give me a can of beer... in the can. The bartender that working that night was a heavyset girl with a red ponytail, who I could clearly hear from where I was sitting complaining about me as a patron to the server. Very professional. I don't know if she was having a bad night or what, but she needs to learn how to pour a beer. I saw several other people send back drinks at the bar so I guess it's not just me that feels this way My server (or SA not sure) name was Mike. He was not friendly or helpful and I only saw him about once every 20 minutes. Terrible service. Gavin I am told was my server, he seemed really nice the one time he checked in For dinner I got the steak and frites which was actually a pretty good dish, I would give it a solid B+ and based solely upon food 4 stars, but the chimichurri is the worst that I ever had. It smelled and tasted like Copenhagen chewing tobacco or "dip". Not even sure how that's possible but I regretted putting it on my steak. For the record, I usually love chimmichurri, have had it all over South America and enjoy making it in my home. This place has a fantastic bar. Happy Hour is great. The drinks are creative and the bar food was delicious. We ordered the flatbread with zucchini, corn arugula and red chili. It is perfectly seasoned and just a bit spicy from the red chilis. If you dont like spice, have them leave them off or get them on the side. From the main menu we ordered the gnocchi with wild mushrooms and truffle oil and melted gruyere cheese. FABULOUS!!! People next to us ordered the prosciutto flatbread, candied habanero bacon, cider and rye brussel sprouts, and baja style crispy cauliflower tacos. I had heard really great things about this place but it fell a little short. I sat at the bar and the lady there was super nice, I believe she was a manger since she was helping cash people out. I found her to be really nice and helpful, but the actual waiter I think was having a bad day or mad about something. I took the recommendation of the Prime Rib French Dip and it was just a normal sandwich.
