This is everything a restaurant should be. The menu is diverse and gives you everything you could want. The food is very tasty and very well executed. The staff if knowledgeable and know their stuff. Atmosphere is perfect for virtually any occasion. read more

By far my favorite restaurant group, R+D never disappoints. Between the consistently delicious dishes to the top notch service, you can't go wrong. Dings Crispy chicken sandwich and the Osaka pressed sushi roll is a MUST!! read more

The atmosphere has declined considerably and they have seemed to struggle post covid. The new management has completely changed the dining experience. We were charged for substitutions that were previously standard. The food is good but it was previously outstanding it seems the standard has not been maintained. Never experienced this at a Hillstone property so I have moved over to Hillstone which is in the same lot. Much better experience and smiling staff that are happy and willing to exceed customers expectations! read more

If I could I would give a 3.5... I have nothing bad to say but Cafe R&D is kind of like what I always tell my mother about Banana Republic...it's fine. It's consistent and your always going to find something that will work and you will enjoy but it's not going to knock your socks off, the Newporter Salad (minus the eggs, yuck!) is nice. Best parts about Cafe R&D are the atmosphere, ambiance and service. It has the feel of a restaurant you would see in California. read more

The food was delicious. While I liked the deviled eggs they were a little talked up. I would hate a little pancetta on top. When I told the server I was torn between the ahi tuna salad and the Mediterranean chicken she didn't try to suggest either one. It's usually this point when the server would show even remote excitement over the food but she simply asked if I needed another minute. So I decided for myself and got the salad. The flavors were delicious, but her lack of enthusiasm over it made it a little less enjoyable. If I were presenting this salad I would note the fact that it has about 10 ingredients, unique..yet not muddled. read more

THE RUDEST RESTAURANT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. Fine dining is something that I always enjoy. I visited this restaurant with 2 friends. When the check came we paid and we may have lingered 5 minutes wrapping up our conversation. Then my friend went to the bathroom. Immediately after the hostess came over and told us that we needed to vacate our table and go stand at the crowded bar that had no available seats. Then the waitress came up and told us to move again. I explained that our friend was in the bathroom and would be right back. She said that there a lot of people waiting. Well that is standard for nice restaurants in Dallas on a Friday night. Never in my life have I been asked to leave a table while a member of my party was in the bathroom. It was incredibly rude. I will never go back! read more

This is one of my favorite spots in Preston Hollow. The food and service are always consistent. There is a great array of food. You can have chips and dips, or sushi as a starter. They have one of the best burgers. I also love the Yellowtail Sashimi Kale Salad. The Newporter is also a great salad. Make sure to save some room for great desserts as well. The Fries with the spicy mayo are a must. I love to eat at the bar, or in the dining room. read more

This place is busy but the food is outstanding. We had sushi, the vegetable roll was really good, but personally I loved the coconut shrimp roll. I had a burger with fries and spicy mayo and it was delicious. For dessert we had this vanilla almond ice cream that had chocolate drizzled on top and it was by far the best dessert I've had. The service is a little slow wish they were faster but they're nice read more

I have loved R&D since they day they opened, however I am very disappointed by how they have navigated re-opening. My husband and I stopped in for drinks last week after seeing that chairs at the bar seemed to have a nice separation between couples sitting there, an empty barstool between each pair, and bartenders were wearing masks, so we felt "safe". However, 15 minutes in a young couple came and squeezed into the seat right next to me! So I went from feeling relatively socially distanced to having my rights completely violated, which by the way is against the law for a restaurant to not maintain the appropriate distance between diners. When I scooted my chair over a bit and made a comment about staying 6 feet apart, the young man laughed thinking I was a making a joke and the bartender said, "nobody's really doing the 6 foot thing anymore." Yup. We won't be back. read more

I wish their menu had a bigger selection because their food is sooo good! I could probably eat the coconut shrimp sushi roll on a daily basis! It's a must if you eat here...but it isn't cheap. The place itself is very busy so a reservation is definitely recommended. If the menu expands then I might be back. read more

Since my last review, R+D has gone from a 4 to a 5 star restaurant! We'll start with the big picture. The atmosphere is perfect. You can dress it up or you can dress it down. Whatever the occasion, I feel like R+D can fit it. I've come here on dates, but I've also been here in gym clothes. The service here is impeccable. Your wine glass will always be full and you'll never have to wait around for service. Additionally, they seamlessly perform what I can "multiple waitstaff." You'll have one person assigned to your table, but other people will continuously help with things like water, wine and utensils. It may sound chaotic, but R+D performs it amazingly. The food here is superb. The menu contains several appetizers, salads, entrees and sides, but is by no means a Chili's Bible. The menu here is concise and delicious. Some recommendations include the Thai Tuna sushi role, newporter salad, deviled eggs and the salmon. They also have a great bar which I believe makes several of its juices fresh. In addition to the bar, they have a great menu of beer and wine. Although, you may just be ordering a Shiner Bock, it just tastes better here. read more

The guacamole and queso (dip duo) was delicious! The deviled eggs have relish in them; of which I was not a fan.The mushroom meatloaf with wilted spinach and mashed potatoes were awesome. The meatloaf was moist and full of mushrooms ... yum! The mashed potatoes have a colcannon quality to them ... so good. The roasted chicken was delicious and the other people at my table said the carnitas sandwich was really good. I was disappointed by the banana cream pie (banana slices were good but the pie filling wasn't very banana-flavoured) but it does have a really good chocolate layer. The ice cream with the house made fudge sauce is the way to go! It was really noisy inside the restaurant. We sat at a booth and I had trouble hearing the person next to me never mind the people sitting across the table. The menu was small but they may rotate it often? The service was great with the wait-staff being very attentive. I would definitely come back! read more

Pine Room Salad. Three words of deliciousness. ORDER THIS. I also tried the deviled eggs, the Greek chicken, the meatballs.....all great. The kids liked their burgers-- but the spaghetti sauce had too much fennel for the 8 year olds liking. Lunch was generally delightful and busy-- which is always a good sign. read more

My friend Karen P took me here for my birthday and I had such an enjoyable experience top to bottom. We had a few great cocktails with grapefruit that was fresh. Yum. The deviled eggs were recommended and they were good, but I saw lots other things that looked amazing. We had the steak and it was cooked to perfection. Great environment, nice servers, great food. Fun! read more

Love this restaurant! Had a really great time with girlfriends. Enjoyed beautifully prepared delicious appetizers & cocktails.

To say this restaurant has gone hill since Covid would be an understatement. The original staff has all left and the new staff has a complete chip on their shoulders. From the bathrooms smelling like urine and not having toilet paper in one of the stalls to the rude, underwhelming bar tenders with attitude this place has lost its allure. I can only assume people still go there to wait bc the food is good but aside from that they have lost their appeal. I will definitely be taking my business elsewhere and I would recommend you do the same. read more

What a great, refreshing and unassuming spot for lunch, even with all of the posh crowd! Went here on a Monday lunch, and was very full. Waitress was being shadowed by a trainee, and all in all, they were execeptionally attentive during our meal. The timing of when to ask if food is ok, when to retrieve plates, etc, was all spot on. Meal is a tad expensive for lunch, but well worth it. The party of three mixed and matched some of the sushi rolls, some of the apps, and a couple of sandwhiches to split. Interior is unashamedly modern and cool, and the ceiling design really reverberates the crowd noise. Great place. read more

One of my favorite lunch spots, my husband and I equally love this place. The yellowtail and kale salad, deviled eggs, and Osaka pressed sushi are our staple go-to's when coming here. Incredible service, lively ambiance, consistent and always great. Yes it's packed as others state. And there's a reason! Come check it out :-) read more

It's hard to beat this place. The menu is small and you think wow there isn't much here but instead of having 40 things on the menu and doing them ok, they have a small menu and do it really really well. First off it might seem odd, but the sushi rolls are outstanding. Love their spicy tuna roll. It's not cheap but it's to good. I can't come here and not get it. The cheeseburger is great. So flavorful. The carnitas sandwich is ridiculous. I'm sure everything else is great too. Chocolate sundae is great. Apparently the carrot cake is amazing although I don't believe carrot should be turned into a cake ;) This place is packed on the weekend so make a reservation. Great bar with lots of seating but again this place gets really full. Been here a few time and I can't wait to go back. read more

This is my second time going to R+D Kitchen and I really wish I could love it more, but it is just okay for me. To start my husband and I ordered two glasses of wine, a cocktail, deviled egg app, the chicken spaghetti and the salmon. The bill was $130 with tip. The thing I love about it is the location and atmosphere! Also the deviled egg app is yummy, but sadly that is about it. Each time we have gone we have had very 'meh' service which the second time bordered on poor. The food itself is okay, but definitely not great, I think they are known for their sushi, but it is so expensive ($16-18) a roll that we have never ordered it. All in all, I think this place would be a skip if you're considering it! read more

So the boyfriend and I finally made it to R+D Kitchen...what took us so long??? This place is amazing! We went on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch around 2pm. The place was still packed, as well as the patio....but somehow we magically got a table pretty quick. The staff was super nice and very attentive. The crowd was full of lunching ladies and families out for a nice meal on a sunny day in Dallas. There was a happy buzz about the entire place...it felt very comfortable and relaxed....two things I love in a restaurant. As for the food. WOW. The menu is so interesting....sushi, deli sandwiches, tower-high salads and other randomness. It was pretty hard to choose...everything sounded great....but I went with the ruben. OMG it was perfect. Piled high with all the usual ruben fixins'...it was exactly what a ruben should taste like. The boyfriend got the carnitas sandwich, which he actually let me get a bite of! Wowowowow the meat was so tender...combined with the amazing asian-tasting slaw, avocado and cilantro it was heaven on pancakey sweet bread. The sandwiches are HUGE.....so be prepared. If you're not super hungry I suggest sharing one with a friend. I wish we had done that....but on the flip side I got some delish leftovers to take home. Also, they don't come with any sides....so order a side. We went with the deviled eggs...and yes they were amazing. I think I would have been content with just eating those oh-so-amazing eggs all afternoon! Word of warning about the bloody mary's here....they taste exactly like shrimp cocktail sauce. BLAH. We sent ours back. But on the upside they have some good beers on tap. If you get a chance to visit R+D, do it! It's a great brunch/lunch spot...and as an added bonus you can walk down to Sprinkles for dessert. ;) read more

Came here with a friend again on a recent trip to Dallas (unfortunately, I had to move away from Texas). We went on a Sunday for brunch, probably around 11:30am or so, and there was no wait. We wanted to sit outside, but to no avail because weather was good that day. We ordered: -Spicy Tuna roll: nothing spectacular here. Fish was fresh though, which is a bonus. There was a good texture of the delicious, fresh fish, avocado, and some crunchy radish. It didn't taste like much without soy sauce, and they provided no wasabi, which was kind of odd. They did put a dab of some sort of aioli-looking sauce on there, which added a bit of flavor. Overall, nothing amazing, but kudos for having fresh fish. -The Sunny Side: this was yummy, but definitely not filling for me. It was one waffle, some syrup, bits of sliced ham, and a sunny-side up egg on top. The dish was good, definitely, but I wish there was more food! It was $11, and I was not full :( -The Cheeseburger: I think I reviewed this in my last review, so I won't say much here except that you can't go wrong! I must comment on the excellent service R+D provides. Not only to our table, but also the customers around us as well. Our waiter generously offered the sushi on the house because it took them so long to bring it out (I didn't even notice it took awhile!), and my coffee cup was never empty. Neither were our water glasses. Also, a nearby table came in with two little girls, and the waitress was so sweet to them, bringing them milk and juice and Maraschino cherries. This was not a better visit than my last one, but I had another really enjoyable experience. I love R+D! read more

R+D has a gold star in every corner of its establishment. The atmosphere is crowded but you don't feel crowded. The lighting is dim, but to the point of making you feel like you are sitting in a lodge next to a fireplace. The servers have permanent smiles and you can tell that each of his/her customers is the focal point of his/her thoughts. Our server noticed that my little 2 year old niece was not eating and offered complementary apple fries. The niece ceased rolling around on the leather booth and stood tall devouring some healthy apple fries. The server saved our niece from leaving the place with an empty stomach. The burger ($13) is cooked well, cut in half, and good to the last bite. The fries are thin, like at Houstons (across the way), and more enjoyable with the complementary in house thousand island dipping sauce. The deviled eggs are top notch and they don't skimp on the ingredients (4 for $4). I do like Houston's better for fries and a burger, but at least the wait (on that day) was not bad at R+D and the food is almost as good for less money in the end. read more

Great causal-esque lunch place. Started with the deviled eggs which were nicely done but needed a little shake of paprika on top for a little bite. The wife had the carnitas sandwich - sooooo good. Like the 2nd best sandwich I've ever eaten good. The Reuben was also pretty good but nowhere near the flavor of the carnitas sandwich. There is a great bar area in the front of the restaurant that was hopping in the afternoon. Ambiance was nice although the service was a bit slow. read more

R+D Kitchen - Carnitas Sandwich - sooo good! - New American Near Me - Dallas, Texas

The first thing that struck me when I came here was the menu. There's something for everyone here: artfully designed sushi rolls; complex, interesting salads; stacked-high burgers and ruben sandwiches. I'm usually not a burger person but had to try one here. They have burger engineering down, so though it's sky-high, it stays together. The lettuce is shredded and mixed with just enough mayo and mustard to make it like slaw. And there's a little bit of BBQ sauce on the underside bun to make it more interesting than your average burger. As for the sesame bun, it sure seemed like it'd been baked in house, but it's good enough that if it weren't, I'd hardly care. I also found out that R+D is part of Hillstone Restaurant Group. Considering the dining experience, I'm not surprised. They always know how to get dining down to a science, and it makes sense to me now why R+D was so on point with their concept. read more

This place has a really eclectic and limited menu. The food is a bit pricey, but the service was excellent. They offer a variety of sushi rolls, salads and desserts. We loved the Thai roll, which had a touch of peanuts to add texture and flavor. The kale salad was also a big hit at our table. The fries are great with their in house thousand island dressing. And the banana cream pie, which is more like a vanilla custard topped with fresh bananas and caramel, is a perfect ending. I would definitely recommend this for place for girls night out and share plates. Portion sizes are smallish, so sharing allows you to try everything. read more

I really like the food here, but I'm really getting tired of having a reservation and still having to wait 20+ minutes to be seated. This has been happening the past several times we've been. Won't be back for a long while. Too many other spots in Dallas that when you make a reservation are seated very close to your reservation time. The last time we were there, they brought out our food without the fries. We were almost finished by the time they finally brought the fries. Service can be very spotty. I've had very good servers, but our last time our waitress was sub par. When we asked another waitress to check on our fries (because our waitress was no where to be seen). She seemed really put out and said she wasn't our waitress. read more

I was impressed from the second I parked. We walked in and the place was packed but not overwhelming. We were greeted with a smile and was told a 20 min wait..our table for 3 was ready in 10. The server was very polite and attentive. The food was amazing. I had the seared trout (daily special for $26) and it AMAZING. The others had Meatloaf and the Rubenesque. Also amazing. Don't go looking like like bum but know you don't have to go super fancy dressed. read more

R+ D Kitchen is fabulous for lunch. I've been three times and it's a delightful experience each time. Arrive early (11 to 11:30 am) on weekdays to avoid a wait. The service is great, even during busy times. The staff is upbeat and professional. I love the open kitchen and ingredient focused menu. My go-to order is the Mediterranean seared tuna salad. I don't generally care for seared tuna, but I adore this salad. It has a spice-crusted seared tuna with a frisée salad, root vegetables, nuts, goat cheese, and a deviled egg on the side. It feels decadent and filling without being heavy, due to the high protein content. read more

I really like the jicama that they add to the spicy tuna roll. It works well. I ordered the blackened trout, which was a special. It was very very good. They did a great job at seasoning it. It wasn't overbearing as blackened fish sometimes can be. read more

Raised the price on the spicy tuna Osaka-style, and cut the portion in half. Solid meh.

Favorite restaurant in Dallas, hands down. Would eat here every night of the week if I could. Their ahi tuna salad and deviled eggs are to die for. The Thai tuna roll is glorious. The dip duo is sublime. And the cocktails are just as good. There is almost always a wait at R+D, but it will be worth it. read more

Our favorite restaurant in Dallas by far. Me and my husband get their pulled pork sandwich, Shiner, and then share the hot fudge sundae. It's the best sundae I've ever had. R+D Kitchen might be one of my favorite restaurants in Dallas. I discovered this place randomly a few years ago and still LOVE it. It is owned by the same group that owns Houstons. I believe the only other location is in California. I am always very impressed by the service, professionalism, and food. Everything on their menu is delicious. They are open all day but I usually go their for brunch. Some of my favorites include the Tuna Salad Sandwich, Newport Salad, Deviled Eggs, Potato Salad, and Cheeseburger. Aside from food, I am in love with their greyhounds (made with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice) and screwdrivers. Great great spot! read more

I had no idea what to have for lunch today but was craving a mind-blowing salad. It's what I got. I ordered the Mediterranean Seared Tuna Salad. It was phenomenal. I had to get it to go because of lunch time constraints but it was superbly packed and put together...sometimes, with salads to go, everything is thrown in haphazardly...not with this one. I took off one star because of the cost. $20 with tax and for lunch, that's kind of high...but, good quality tuna, goat cheese, papaya, marcona almonds...yeah, kind of understandable... read more

Total fan of this place. It's clean, great service and best of all....the most fresh and best food. We come here often, just to grab a salad and share the steak. This is one place I don't mind spending money at, because you get all of this in return! Bravo! read more

Great food and service at the Kitchen! Nice portions and presentation of all the meals at our table. We had the cheeseburger, meatloaf, and fish plates. Each was savory and just the right amount of saucy. The deviled egg appetizer got us started and it was hard not to just keep ordering more. The only down to all the up was not getting a dirty martini to satisfy the birthday girl. They substituted a greyhound for us. The wait time passed quickly with drinks on the patio. Don't be in a rush cause this is a very hip establishment and has a regular clientele . read more

We walked in on a Monday night at 6pm and got a table for 2 immediately without a reservation. The waitress recommended a few cocktails (though it was a little annoying that there wasn't a menu--it was loud & hard to hear her). Both of the ones we tried were delicious. We had the deviled eggs as our starter--an all around solid appetizer. For our meal, I had the Asian noodle salad & my boyfriend had the rubenesque sandwich (be warned, it comes with no side). I liked my salad a lot: beautiful presentation, rich bouquet of flavors with a little bite. The sandwich was very filling, tasty but messy. We would come back even though it's a little pricey for what you get. read more
