I love everything on this menu, from the sushi (seared tuna!) to the sandwiches (ruben or carnitas!) to the filet, meatloaf, pan-fried fish and of course the banana cream pie for desert! The boutique wine list is amazing and is not marked up anywhere near other restaurants; also the cocktail menu is well priced and also delicious. I always sit at the bar so I can get a good look at the whole place. It is great for people watching and I love the bartenders, I have made friends with all of them! I definitely have to give this place a 5 star review- my grandmother said so!!! The GF and I took my grand folks out last Sunday night for a nice dinner and I fell in love with this place. The ambiance is 5 star, service was 5 star, the booths (love the round booth as it made for great talk) was 5 star and most importantly, food was 5 star. My grandfather and I are both the predictable type. We went with the Cheeseburger (mine was minus the cheese and tomato). It was cooked just the way I liked- medium- with plenty of juicy greatness and just the right amount of lettuce, pickle and mayo so that it actually complemented the beef, rather than overwhelm it. The side of fries for $3 was a treat because you can share it (serving is very large) and they were seasoned just right. Of course I finished my plate, but what amazed me was my 5'1", 82 yr old granddad finished his plate as well. :-) The GF had their spicy tuna roll and a side salad, both of which looked amazingly and lovingly prepared. She was a happy lady needless to say. My grandmother stuck with a chicken salad. She said it was a bit on the spicy side (which I love but she doesn't) but I couldn't tell if she didn't enjoy it or not because it was almost all gone in a flash! Our wait time for a spot inside was minimal- 15 min. max and so we enjoyed drinks at the bar while waiting. Very impressive place in my eyes. read more

Decided to try this for a Monday lunch (New Years holiday) when several of the places in the Bishop Arts district that we wanted to try were closed for lunch that day. Glad we tried R+D. Make a reservation - glad we did, as we were seated right away, but there was always a wait at the door it seemed. Got the deviled eggs as an appetizer. They were GOOD but I'm not totally sure what the big fuss is about them. My husband doesn't usually eat them, but when I told him they had lots of sweet pickles in them, he tried them and liked. I got the ahi tuna salad, which was delicious and so fresh! Our waitress said their sushi is flown in DAILY from Hawaii! Wow! It was wonderful. I'd like to go back again and try some of their sushi rolls. Husband got the carnitas sandwich, which I had read good reviews about. It was indeed very good. Service was outstanding. Great wine, great food. Atmosphere was nice but just a bit pretentious/"Highland Parkish"... a place to "see and be seen." I had to laugh... there was an older woman to be seated right ahead of us. She walked over near the food line, and the head guy there clearly didn't approve of this. He was pointing to the hostess to get this lady away! (The cute little lady was oblivious that she was commiting a faux pas, or I would have felt badly for her!) I finally decided to try the little sister of the Houston's restaurant chain. Situated right across from Houston's (literally separated by a parking lot), Cafe R&D boasts clean lines with its wood trimmed ceiling and more casual feel. I came on a Saturday night and waited maybe 5-10 minutes. Unlike Houston's, this place accepts reservations for parties under 4 people and after 1pm. Definitely try to call ahead if you want to come here or otherwise expect to hang out at the bar, which is very nice, but can be a very, very long wait. My husband and I tried the duo of dips which came with guacamole and a really tasty queso. The queso was interesting because it was cold and oddly reminded me of pimento cheese spread. With the recommendation from our hostess, I ordered the tuna tartare crostini. This was very good and came with a good portion of tuna tartare and 10 pieces of crostini. This was an interesting salad but I think I might have enjoyed it more as an appetizer. My husband ordered the carnitas sandwich. Now the carnitas sandwich is probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. It came on this poppy seed covered bread, slices of pork, a cabbage slaw, and the ever so famous Houston's fries. While I did like this place alot, don't expect it to be Houston's. It's not a good comparison. This place stands on its own and I will probably come back but Houston's is still my first choice. read more

Came here for dinner on a Saturday night and had the option of waiting 30 minutes for a table or sitting at the chef's table. I was starving so opted for the bar, but even if I wasn't, I generally enjoy bar seating because I get to watch all the kitchen action up close. Great ambience and fantastic service. The wood interior makes it feel very sophisticated, yet warm. Onto the food. My boyfriend and I split an appetizer of deviled eggs which came in a set of four. Each egg half was chock full of delicious, creamy egg yolk which had the perfect consistency. 4 stars. For the entree, we got the Newport Salad which had bacon, apples, chopped egg, and roasted chicken. As an entree salad, it was pretty large. I thought it was good, but my boyfriend thought it was very delicious. He especially liked the chicken, which I thought had a lot of flavor but was perhaps too dry. 3 stars. Now onto the second entree, we split the spicy tuna 'Osaka Style.' For those of you who are unfamiliar with 'Osaka Style' it is a sushi without the roll, pressed flat into rectangles in a box. Now sitting in front of the sushi guy, my mouth was watering looking at the seared ahi tuna roll and other various rolls that he was making and was starting to regret my decision to get my original roll, the order for which I had already placed. However, when it came out it was AMAZING. It cost $16 but thought it was worth every penny. The fish was extremely fresh and came with a really savory sauce that they played the roll with. I would have licked the plate had I not been in public...5 stars. Lastly, the coffee appeared to be brewed in a chemex, which was a nice touch. All in all, nice meal. I loved the decor and the staff here but for a restaurant operated by large group like Hillstone, I expected more. Careful not to order "ungood" food, I Yelped it and saw that everybody loved the deviled eggs so how could I not order them?! They alright. I actually don't even remember what was in them. Oh well, next item please. Husband got the Hawaiian inspired swordfish which he enjoyed. I got the Thai tuna sushi roll and a side salad. It's basically a tuna roll wrapped in white soy paper with a slice of pepper and peanuts wrapped inside. Not really sure what made this a "Thai" sushi roll. I guess it was because it had peanuts inside? I don't get it. Also it was a square sushi roll, I hate square sushi rolls. I spent 5 minutes per piece trying to make it into a round, more eater-friendly roll. The highlight of my dinner was my side salad. Why? I love my salads like I like my man-- well dressed (cue drums: ba dum dum). In fact I only order salads for the dressing (and sometimes for the arugula) and I must say the dressing was tasty. R + D Kitchen is always one of my staple restaurants in Dallas. The food and service is always very consistent and it has probably my favorite appetizers in town. I always start with the dip duo (guacamole and pimento cheese dips) with fresh tortilla chips and the deviled eggs which are easily some of the best in town...and I order deviled eggs WHEREVER I go. The service is good without being pushy and there always seems to be a crowd here no matter what time of day. I haven't found a main dish that I'm particularly found of. The wild mushroom meatloaf sounds good in theory but it comes out mushy more than anything. The chicken meatballs and spaghetti have been overly dry each time I've tried them. With that said, the seared ahi salad is a winner with beets, goat cheese, marcona almonds and more goodies. The sushi is surprisingly good but a bit overpriced and not filling enough for what it is - if you're going down the sushi path, try it as an appetizer to share. I'd be perfectly happy feasting on appetizers and a salad from here any day of the week. read more

We had a really good experience here. First, I love the decor, which is great. We wanted to sit outside but all the tables were taken. The inside decor is so great we weren't really let down. We started with some drinks (I had an old-fashioned, which was delicious), and my wife grilled the bartender to get some sort of special beverage. The food was amazing too. I agree with the others that you should definitely get the deviled eggs. I had the pan-fried fish and my wife had the pulled pork sandwich. I will start out by saying we drove south from Frisco to try this exceptionally well reviewed 5 star spot in Preston Center/University Park. I was so looking forward to the Veggie Burger and was extremely disappointed when I was told they took it off the menu 2 days ago. The replacement was a sandwich with cucumber, tomato, greens and goat cheese...REALLY ? That is no replacement for that fabulous Veggie Burger which happened to be the all time best Veggie Burger I have ever had anywhere. The one at Cheesecake Factory is up there but in no way as fabulous. I will trust that the replacement will not be popular and they will bring back the Veggie Burger. We started out with the deviled eggs which were very good but I believe I can do just as well with mine by adding the minced celery. We then ordered the chicken meatballs and they were really exceptional. The tomato sauce was well prepared with lovely fresh ingredients. After reviewing the other menu choices I settled on the pan seared lemon sole served with an amazing coleslaw and a sliced Campari tomato. Everything was really perfectly prepared and the tartar sauce far exceeded the usual. My lunch buddy, Terry, ordered the Reuben sandwich and said it was the best he had ever tasted. It looked fabulous ! I noticed that several other people close to us had ordered the same. The sushi looks absolutely amazing and was so beautifully presented. I will venture into the sushi next time I visit this spot. This a great spot for interesting and well prepared food. We both enjoyed it and will be back again with hopes of the Veggie Burger makes a come back by popular demand. The pulled pork sandwich will probably be Terry's choice on our next trip. R+D was very good. The wait was a while but I don't mind drinking a lot at a bar. Interior was like any other Houston's you've been to and the food was really good. Sushi rolls apps were good..Rainbow roll looked and tasted fantastic. Burgers are large and good and would go there for lunch just for the burger. I had Carnitas and it wasn't the best I've ever had but it was tastey, big, and good. I'd order it again. This is truly an enigma wrapped up in a riddle. Picking through the menu is the strangest experience. it's so narrow and limited I kept looking for another page with the goods. Nope. I liked the deviled eggs. Interesting. Overall things seemed healthy and the steak we had was pretty good. I can honestly say they've got 1/3 of a great restaurant in the works here. Definitely a scene type place. I'd bet if it was located in uptown or downtown near a couple law firms it would be a real meat market. This place has changed. Take the bar. It's all gay men (I love gay men), so if you are a gay man go here. You'll score a nice doctor or a lawyer for sure! The bar use to serve a good stiff drink, now...not so much. They stock their bar with a weird off brand. This last visit I asked for Hendricks and tonic and they didn't have it, or anything close, so the very young bartender substituted Hendricks for some lavender floral gin that smelled and tasted like perfume-floor cleaner. So I ordered a Cosmo, it was cherry red, instead of the icy light pink I so enjoy. So beware. I'm not sure how much the menu has changed since my last visit a while back, but everything coming out of the kitchen was now piled high (enough food on every plate to feed a small village) lots of fries, burgers and could it have been meatloaf? I ordered a sushi appie - I didn't eat it. It wasn't fresh. I then ordered a salad that was uneventful, not their specialty I guess. I began to get really crowded, and families with kids were coming in by the bus loads, but I have to wonder what everyone is standing in line for? I came again for breakfast and it was much earlier than my last visit so it wasn't as crowded. Service was done well. I am ecstatic to tell you about the new menu item I tried. I ordered the sunrise stack or was it called the sunny side stack, either way it was a big hit with me. It was a stack of a cornmeal waffle on the bottom with shaved ham, Havarti cheese and a suuny side up egg atop it all. That, my friends was delish! The waffle on the bottom was small enough and delicately sweet to compliment the other guests that came together for the party in my mouth. One side note: They got a new espresso machine so the cappuccino was curiously strong. We had to get more milk added. Just a little FYI Carrot cake was just as Delicious as I remembered. read more

Wow, this place is off the charts delish! Super flavorful dishes with a twist. I've been here twice with my parents for lunch and we were blown away both times. My dad is a very critical and picky eater, so when he asked if we could go back when they came into town I was pleasantly surprised! But I of course obliged. The rubenesque and the carnitas sandwich are so flavorful. The meatball appetizer is also great. My dad and I get the 2 sandwiches I mentioned and go halfsies so we can enjoy both! My mom got the fish both times and loved it. The atmosphere is nice and open, and the service is great. The sandwiches are a la carte so we got fries for the table both times. The spicy mayo and thousand island dipping sauces added a nice flare to the fries, and even the peppered ketchup made it all just a little more special and unique. If I am in Dallas for lunch then this is where I generally go. Can't help but have the fish and slaw or maybe roasted chicken with whatever seasonal side is coming with it. Never been unhappy here. The service I have received has been stellar. Equal to that of Craft in their prime with back-waiters and so many people giving you attention without even noticing it. I recommend it to anyone looking for a good place to eat. Nothing fancy, no crazy ingredients. Just good food. Don't understand any complaints about price or sides on reviews. You are not ordering blind. Prices are on the menu and most everything is around the 20 dollar range. Great place for meetings or intimate dinner/lunch. Run by the same people that run Houstons, R&D is a solid well run, restaurant. After going to a bunch of half-assed places, sometimes it's nice to go to a place run by professionals. From the moment I walked in and was greeted by the hostess to the moment I left I was surrounded by professionals doing their jobs well. Our server, Donna, was great. My two dining companions had the seared tuna salad which they both thought was fantastic. I had, uncharacteristically, the goat cheese omelette and a glass of chardonnay. I thoroughly enjoyed both. Normally I'm a meat and potatoes guy, but I thought I'd switch it up. Overall, I'm a fan, I enjoy coming here, and I'll probably do it again. read more

Cafe R+D is the most forgotten and under rated restaurant I can think of. Poor little R+D. It lays in the shadows of Houstons figuratively and literally. The Cafe and Houstons are both owned by hillside restaurant group. While strikingly similar they are also strikingly different. Next time you get an itch to go to your old comfort zone of Houston's, come here instead! You won't be disappointed. The ceilings are low and the wood is rich looking. Modern looking but warm and inviting as well. The bar is expansive with tons of seating. If you are wanting wine before and/or during your meal you are in the right place. They have a great eclectic selection at AMAZING prices. You can't go wrong with a good table Pinot Noir for 38 bucks. All of the bartenders are so cool and friendly that I often opt out to eat at the bar alone or with company. Food wise, the quality is top notch and while the menu is small it is extremely diverse. From sushi to omelets to meatloaf and deviled eggs, and all being delish. The meatloaf is my favorite here of all time next to my own. As far as sushi being on the menu, ya... it's kinda random BUT... good lord... it is great. Our server told me that the guy from nobu rolls here as well. This would explain the crisply rolled rolls. Tight and perfect. Go for the mango tuna roll. The sushi makes a great starter. If they happen to have the salmon when you go GET IT... so crispy on the outside and flaky in the middle. Damn. We have been going here for years, and last night, changes all around. The mashed potatoes were missing the cabbage, the spinach was uninspiring. Service was very average. The seasoning on the steak was different... tasted like they had added allspice or corriander. The spice on the tuna in the Mediterranean salad was cumin or something that tasted very strange. The salad itself was full of frise and had some awful potatoes in it. Sushi was good, but at 7:20, they were out of Osaka style. Come on! From the bathrooms smelling like urine and not having toilet paper in one of the stalls to the rude, underwhelming bar tenders with attitude this place has lost its allure. This restaurant is yet another runaway hit for Hillstone, the group which owns Houston's. R+D is an ode to the midcentury period, with its clean lines, and wooden structure. The food is friendly, clean and does not take itself too seriously. The deviled eggs are scrumptious, the sushi is fresh, the chicken meatballs and pasta are healthy and satisfying, and my husband and my father both tell me the Reuben sandwich is heaven. The salads are not too fussy or fatty. The one thing I have to say I am not a fan of is their fish, which often times they lather with olive oil, and it makes it look as though it can still swim. If you want to finish the meal with a grin that will last you all day, the banana cream pie with its velvety texture and hidden chocolate crunch is a must. read more

While the main dishes are super, don't overlook the sides: the fries are fantastic, potato salad is amazing (Germanic style), deviled eggs... they are all wonderful. The Ahi Tuna Tartare is really fantastic. So is the steak salad. I can understand those who might smite it as an overpriced diet Houston's, it sort of is. However, the food is very, very good. R+D is one of the best, easiest places for a nicer lunch that won't empty out your wallet. Their streamlined menu is mirrored in the way the restaurant is set up. Clean lines, strong and tasteful materials. Like their salads and sandwiches. Crisp, bold, tasty. I especially love the seared tuna salad, which comes with baby beets, potatoes, chevre and mixed greens. The tuna has a pepper crust that is delectable. And of course, the salad comes with one of R+D's amazing deviled eggs. I've tried almost everything on their itty-bitty menu, and it is always good and I am always satisfied. The rubenesque sandwich is to die for, thanks to their slaw (which you've no doubt had at Houston's--I mean Hillstone). What a pleasant surprise! This place would probably be a solid five were it not for the slightly off-balance price-to-taste ratio. Definitely the best deviled eggs I've ever had, but it's not like there's a competitive market for them. The burger was absolutely delicious and getting the whole thing to fit in my mouth was a technical feat as it resembles a high-rise thanks to the thick patty and layers of fresh vegetables. It's been a couple years since I last visited R+D. I used to frequent this spot a lot for work lunches but am rarely in the area now. However, this week I had a coworker fly into Love Field around lunch so I took the opportunity to stop by. Not much has changed... And that is a good thing. R+D is still a popular lunch spot with relatively little seating- expect a half hour wait at noon. They do have a small counter overlooking the kitchen where individuals can be seated quickly. There is also a bar with open seating; I would guess that has about 2 dozen seats, of which maybe a revolving quarter of were available during the hour I was there. The menu is brief but there is still something everyone will enjoy. I deviated from my normal sandwich order and tried the seared ahi tuna Mediterranean salad. WOW! Hands down the best ahi salad I've ever had. The tuna steak was PERFECTLY cooked with a delicious peppered crust. And the vinaigrette provided an amazing blend of acidity with a hint of sweetness. Although busy, the service is friendly, attentive, and professional. Throw in drink, tax, and tip and expect to spend $20-30 per person. read more

We (the boyfriend and I) ordered a California roll and it wasn't just nott;not good" it was GROSS. It really tasted like someone had rubbed a sweet pickle all over it. Now I've had quite a bit of sushi and I've never tasted ANYTHING like this. There's supposed to be a vinegar dressing in the rice but no sushi that's crossed my palate has even come close to this. Also, the texture of the rice was wrong, wrong, wrong. It was compacted so much it was almost hard and it was ice cold like they'd prepared the sushi hours ago and just now sliced it. For more than ten bucks for a simple California roll? Seriously, I've had better from a grocery store! After one bite I was done - it was hard enough to swallow that. As for the main course... well it was better, but that's really not saying much. For nearly twenty bucks I expect a simple chicken and grain (West of Paris Chicken) to sing - or at least hum. This was way out of tune. The chicken was almost dry and nearly flavorless and the tablouleh was very overdressed to compensate (again to much vinegar). Fortunately, my boyfriend's dish was very nice. He got the market pasta, which was a spaghetti with chicken meatballs and broccoli last night. The noodles were perfect and the sauce was well balanced. If the whole meal had been like his dish I'd be very pleased. The saving grace was that the waitress was very kind to us. I've about had it with food. I mean, what's the deal with it? The proliferation of goofy diets with 80 billion variations and chefs who open single syllable restaurants trying to outdo the other single syllable restaurants with "eclectic for the sake of being eclectic" sounding menu items. Frozen Custard Duck Confit. Braised Apple Roasted Pork Lamb Chop Au Gratin. Stuffed Beef Bone Manicotti. Or, whatever. And that's not even considering portion sizes, where more always trumps less. Why have a quarter pound of ribs when you can have a whole pound for only $5 more? Who cares if you don't eat it all, take it home and let it rot in your fridge. I'm pretty sure those things are the exact opposite of what R+D is going for. They make a handful of things, and they do them well. That should be everyone's model for living. Pick a thing or two and do them better than 99% of the population. Plus, the ever generic "studies" tell us that more choice leads to less happiness, because you're left wondering what could've been, or some dumb shit like that. Since R+D rejects the notion of giving its diners infinite menu options, the handful of things they do do (see what I did there?), they do really well. And I mean that with all sincerity, REALLY well. I'm not sure I've had a bad thing here, except for a thing the girl who agreed to marry me had that she didn't like because it wasn't what she was expecting. But no big deal, they weren't offended, they just brought something else. Not that it matters much, but if you just pay attention to the table you're sitting at and the numerous 30 to 40 to 50 to 60 somethings sitting at the bar trying their best to be seen, you might miss the subtle, but artistic architecture inside. Here's a tip: look up. If you're not impressed, you're either a robot, a commie, both, or a person without a soul. I only highlight this to re-emphasize, if I haven't already, the attention to detail that seems to go in to everything this place does. Some places don't give too much of a shit what the inside of their building looks like. They want the food to say everything. R+D wants both, and they pull it off quite well. read more

I really like the food here, but I'm really getting tired of having a reservation and still having to wait 20+ minutes to be seated. This has been happening the past several times we've been. Won't be back for a long while. Too many other spots in Dallas that when you make a reservation are seated very close to your reservation time. The last time we were there, they brought out our food without the fries. We were almost finished by the time they finally brought the fries. Service can be very spotty. I've had very good servers, but our last time our waitress was sub par. When we asked another waitress to check on our fries (because our waitress was no where to be seen). She seemed really put out and said she wasn't our waitress. read more

Excellent Sushi. Thai Tuna quite unique, with toasted macadamia nuts... yum. Good stuff. Great place for date night, though crowded and loud as early as 7 on a Fri. We'll be back! read more
