I don't agree with the A health score. The customer service was poor. I had gnats floating in my noodle soup and pointed out to the female owner. She said that they washed the vegetables many times and then walked away without offering to make me another one. Was I expected to keep eating?! That was strike one, but I believe in second chances. Went back a few months later. Enjoyed their food and some of the friendlier staff, until I saw a fat dead fly at the bottom of my dish. QQ! This place automatically grabbed my attention with just its name! This place though is not QQ. It is old school early 80's looking with a couple of booths and tables in a long narrow space. The place is true to its name though with its "xiao che" (meaning little eats in Chinese). You look over the menu and you think it's a deal! Then you order and the plates come out and reality sets in and find that you get for what you pay. The dishes range from $4 - $7 but they are a bit small. Of the things we ordered, I recommend the pork chop rice and the potstickers. The pork chop was marinated and full of flavor. It is immediately fried upon order and on your table within a matter of minutes. Also on the place are salted vegetables, boiled vegetables, tofu, minced meat, and a marinated egg. The star of that dish was the pork chop! As for the potstickers, they were pretty good. Moist and it comes with a dish of vinegar as a dipping sauce. Nothing too special but fried well and the wrapper is not too thick. Service is so-so. Remember to ask for tea or water or you won't get any. Or you cannot also get up to grab it yourself at the counter. The waitresses do the minimum but they also are backup chefs. Place seems perfect for to-go orders but maybe not the best place for a sit-down meal. It's meh when there are other Taiwanese restaurants in Temple City and Arcadia (cough Sinbala cough). At $4 for 4 toppings, the quality and quantity of toppings fell short of SinBaLa of Arcadia and Little Bean of Rowland Heights. -ve's: - not all the toppings listed were available - frugal with the amount of toppings given - the four tiny pieces of taro I got were super hard. Two of the pieces were so hard I couldn't even bite into them. Not only were they undercooked, it tasted as if they had been sitting in the fridge for a while. mung beans were slightly undercooked as well - I won't even get into the lack of customer service at this place... +ve's: - having shaved ice on a hot summer night is better than not having any - the mochi balls were soft and chewy I don't know about the other items on the menu, but I won't be ordering shaved ice from them anymore. read more

QQ kitchen is located inside a small plaza across from the Ralph's on Las Tunas. There's plenty of parking but it might be hard to spot this place because it's so small. It's right next to a subway and a dominos pizza. Their menu is half vegetarian and half non vegetarian, so you get the best of both worlds. I'm a vegetarian so this place is perfect for me to go to because all my friends are meat eaters. My favorite thing they have here is the vegetarian pork stew noodle soup. I love the thick and ooey gooey texture of the soup. They give you a lot of fake pork along with thinly sliced bamboo shoots and shiitake mushrooms. It's really delicious, don't forget to put hot sauce in it as well. If you want another kind of noodle soup to eat, get the soy rib stew. It taste like the traditional Taiwanese beef noodle soup, just vegetarian style. They used to serve the best fried mushrooms but they stopped selling it :( saddest moment of my life. I also love their tea eggs, my mom orders around 10 of them for me and it take me a whole week to eat them. They have a lot of flavor and the size of the egg is huge. I tried another dish, it's called the half and half rice dish. It includes rice, veggies, fake fish and fake chicken. The fake chicken and fake fish tasted like the frozen ones you buy from the market, it wasn't that good. My boyfriend got their seafood udon soup (non vegetarian), he said it was okay, it was lacking in flavor but their udon was cooked nicely and chewy. Very flavorful and tender. I asked for extra veggies instead of the rice, and they were nice to fill my request. You pretty much get a full meal with that combo. Soup, meat, veggies, and a Taiwanese jello dessert. For $5.50, it's a really good deal. Now for the cons. The soup that's served with the combo was bland. Pretty much seaweed and daikon boiled in water, no flavor no salt. Didn't really care for that. The dessert, eh. I'm thinking because these were mainly sides or complimentary with the order, they don't put much effort in them, since it's "free." But big props for the main dish itself. I came in here the other day with my boyfriend because I wanted some close to home, vegetarian comfort food. After a long day, we walked in at about 2:40PM ready to eat. From the moment we stepped in, we could sense the extreme hostility of the environment. Honestly, we were the only customers at that hour, and I even walked out to make sure they weren't closed for the 3-5PM break many restaurants take. I've been here often enough that I assumed service would be friendlier. Instead, the waitress pointed at a booth for us to sit, and stood next to us and stared at us the whole time we were deciding between each other what to order. Aside from her staring at us eat the whole time, with a very "I wish you would leave" expression, she ignored us for the duration of the meal. Since the water is next to the wall, and the waitress wasn't planning on refilling my cup, I went to refill it myself after 20 minutes. I've done this before, and it doesn't bother me since most people get their own water there anyway. As soon as she saw me pouring it, she got this extremely irritated look on her face; even my boyfriend who was sitting 5 feet away saw how angry she looked that I was refilling water. Anyway we got our dessert to go because of the whole environment that the waitress created. I totally lost my appetite and felt awkward the whole time. Honestly, I eat vegetarian consistently twice a month like some Buddhist who follow the lunar calendar and I always order from QQ but the past 3 times have been really off putting. Don't get me wrong, the food is really good and if I was rating the food only I would give them a solid 4.5/5 for vegetarian food. But, what concerns me is the sanitation. Here are 3 separate instances: 1) First time there was a small fly in the dessert jello which the give for free, so I honestly let it slide and threw the jello away. 2) There was a hair in the food, specifically the eggplant dish. Incredibly unappealing and I just lost my appetite. 3) The third time there was a PUBE. A THICK, GNARLY, PUBE IN THE TOFU dish and I swore off QQ despite the convenience and solid food. This place has changed owners. They have retained most of the vegetarian menu however which is nice. The prices have gone up by a few cents or a dollar in some dishes but it's still relatively cheap. Parking is free in the lot outside or street parking around the plaza. Some of my favorite dishes (vegetarian ones) are the egg omelet, the chili wontons, the stir fried fresh veggies (You need to ask them what they have for the day and they will stir fry it for you. You can ask for ginger, simple oil, garlic, etc.), the green and white rice cakes, the beef noodle soup, the fried popcorn chicken bento that has rice, fried popcorn chicken, a stewed soy sauce egg, cabbage stir fry, and the mushroom and mustard green concoction. They have a lot of other yummy dishes here that are vegetarian too like chow mien, chow fun which are the thick long rice noodles, cold noodle, taiwanese noodle, noodle soup, lots of different bento combinations like with pork chop, fish, fried fish, shredded chicken, mushroom sauce, and much more. You have to specify you want the VEGETARIAN version of these items because otherwise you will get the MEAT version. Unless of course, that is what you want to order. They also have a lot of drinks on the menu, and dessert. read more

Used to love QQ? Me too. Hate QQ now? Me too. QQ Kitchen used to be a great hole-in-the-wall (it's tiny!) Taiwanese joint, but changed ownership some 12 months ago. Since then, it really hasn't been the same. They used to have such great and authentic Taiwanese food like paigu fan (pork and rice) and ou a jian (oyster pancakes), but both taste so-so now. One saving grace, however, is that the new owners haven't botched the shaved ice or boba drinks, both of which are cheap, especially the drinks. For example, you can get fairly high quality Boba Milk Tea and Boba Coffee for $1.75. At least it's good enough so that you wouldn't have to go to Lollicup, but it's really not as good as Tenren's (considering QQ's is also about 50% cheaper...). BUT if you miss the old QQ, then you're in luck! The old owners, upon selling QQ, have moved into the strip mall literally right next door to the plaza QQ in which QQ is located. i actually forgot to write a review for this place. i've been there twice, and probably won't go there again anytime soon! my previous experience there was just horrible, still thinking why i didn't go to won won just few steps away from this place. the first time i went there, i thought the food was pretty good. the chicken steak with rice was very flavorful, i liked it alot. also got the ba wan, it was not bad. very cheap too. so i went back for the second time, n was very dissappointed, for the food, and the service! that server was a B*, i will rmbr that forever of this place. at first i thought she was mute, but afterall, i guess she wasn't. she basically just got us seated and left us there with nothing, no water, no service, she did not speak a word. sigh..fine, good thing the menu was already on the table. we finally decided to order and still, she did not speak a word. ...hmm..ok? after 10 mins, she delivered the food, popcorn chicken, sausage rice, and oyster omelette. i like my popcorn chix spicy so i asked her if they have chili powder and for the first time she spoke, the answer was "NO!" in a restaurant like this, i didn't believe they dun have chili powder. since i was kinda mad at her, i went to the cashier/the chef, and asked for chili powder, and they were nice enough to give it to me. and i got 2 cups of water from them too. with the chili powder, the popcorn chix was still not good. it was bland and very dry and crunchy, i didn't like it at all. quickly has way better popcorn chix than that. sausage with rice was just watever. since the food wasn't that good, service was horrible..i had to serve myself and take that freaken attitude from our server. it's better off for me to go to won won and enjoy my meal happily. read more

1 star. I've known QQ since before it went vegetarian. I had always found it a nice little joint to get some Taiwanese plates and snacks, even though the quality is barely adequate. Service is where many of these small joints crash and burn. We dropped in to get some shaved ice for the kids after lunch. We got the "stink eye" since we only wanted to order one plate of shaved ice. With only one other table occupied, the waitress kept coming walking by eyeing our table creating quite an uncomfortable experience... but it wasn't in a cordial "may I get you anything else" kind of way, but the non-verbals clearly conveyed quite the contrary. Message received. We won't be coming back, QQ. Verdict: What could've been a fun, after lunch, dessert experience turns into "another one bites the dust" joint in my book. QQ isn't all vegetarian, but they do have a full vegetarian menu alongside a non-veg menu. Dishes made with eggs are labeled. Be warned they are cash-only. This is a narrow hole-in-the-wall in a stripmall with a dry cleaner and a Subway. You get the picture. I had the vegan "chicken" fried rice, made with brown rice and no egg ($5). I also got an order of spicy dumpling ($5). It's not often that you can get fried brown rice, but the dish here was remarkably bland---just some peas, carrots and a few pieces of the "chicken" dumped together. Maybe the curry fried rice would have been better. The dumplings were also bland and the filling seemed more like ricotta cheese than anything else. All told, I won't be returning to QQ. I had high hopes given its vegetarian/vegan menu but the San Gabriel Valley has better stuff to offer by way of the vegetable. read more

Its been too long! i did hear that they are reopening today( July 7th, 2010), but i also heard that its strictly vegetarian now... which is making me frown and smile at the same time. Why? They have one of the best pork chop rice san gabriel valley has to offer. I've tried at least 20+ pork chop rices, and QQ has one of the best. Not to mention one of the cheapest! $4.50 for pork chop rice, and it comes with soup + dessert (grass jelly)!!! I used to only go to Sinbala, but ever since I've tried QQ, there is no going back. And now, no more :( Every cloud DOES have a silver lining though... Their vegetarian menu (if its still the same) is VERY EXTENSIVE! And it tastes great!
