QQ Kitchen! What more can I say about this place? Amazing, cheap and tasty Taiwanese comfort food - and the best thing is that it's consistent and tastes the same every single time. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember, back when their bento boxes for $5. Now it's double that, but in today's economy it's still a steal especially when considering it comes with a free Green or Black Tea (which is surprisingly one of the better ones I've had!). Parking is also plentiful and not an issue since it's located in a sizable plaza. Fast, friendly and affordable - what more can you ask for? I love this place so much - a few months ago when part of the plaza it's in collapsed (Not QQ's, but the other side), I was devastated because they didn't know how long they would be forced to close for. I don't remember exactly how long they were closed for, but one day driving by I noticed they were open again and I told my entire family about it! If you haven't been here before, I HIGHLY recommend you try this place out. QQ has been around for quite some time, but I haven't actually dined in until recently. I remember they used to serve only vegetarian food, but it seems like their menu has expanded back to vegetarian and Taiwanese food. They're located in the same plaza as Subway and Domino's, so parking is not hard to find. Decided to relive some high school memories and dined here with a few friends (one of which is vegetarian). I was surprised at the number of vegetarian dishes offered (noodles, soups, rice), but I stuck with the regular Taiwanese dishes. Pork and chicken rice ($7.25) seems to be the most worthwhile combo. For a relatively low price, you get a pork chop, a chicken steak, some vegetables, a soy sauce egg, pickled vegetables, and rice AND a complimentary black or green tea. What a steal, right? Their menu claims to not use high fructose corn syrup, which is nice. Food came out fairly quickly and while it was slightly oily, it was a comforting dish that filled me up with some leftovers to spare. Pork chop and chicken were both really good - although the pork chop was better just because there was more fat. The chicken was a little dry, but there was marinated flavor. Came with the perfect amount of rice - really enjoyed the sauce over the rice. I finished about 2/3 and saved the rest for lunch. One friend ordered the sausage rice ($7.25) and another friend ordered the vegetarian curry fried rice ($7.50). The vegetarian dish normally doesn't come with a drink, but the owner was nice enough to give it to them anyway, probably because they ended up ordered side dishes that more than compensated for the price of the drink. I tried the sausage and I really enjoyed the flavor - on par with Sinbala's sausage rice and it came with the same vegetables and egg and tofu side dishes as my combo did. Didn't try my friend's vegetarian dish, but he said it was tasty. We also got an order of popcorn chicken ($5.99) and vegetarian mushroom omelet ($5.99). The popcorn chicken was plentiful and lightly fried. I did think there was more batter than chicken, but it was a nice snack to munch on while eating the dishes. The omelet was alright - a vegetarian take on the oyster pancake, but I wasn't a fan of the sweet and sour sauce poured on top. Flavor was mildly bland; probably not something I myself would order again. As for the teas, we all got the green teas, which was a nice addition to the meal. A bit on the sweeter side, but very refreshing. I do have to say that I ended up saving the tea to drink the next day and it tasted like water. This place is cash only and seats are quite limited. They do get out orders quickly, and lots of people seem to eat or order take-out so it's a matter of luck if you decide to dine in. This is a mom and pop Taiwanese food restaurant. I come here when I crave some yummy food that reminds me of good Taiwanese food. The pork chop rice is the default go to if you are looking for a quick yummy pork dish with rice loaded with a mushroom/meat sauce. It even comes with with tea when you order this. My favorite is this dish called 肉羹麵. It's this yummy soup noodle dish with carrots, bamboo, meat and a vinergery broth. Not many places serve this so when I saw it on the menu here it's my go to on cold days. 5/5 for the food, which was great as always 1/5 for the service and communication. This is specifically for the lady working the cash register, the older one who had a wart. It pains me to give a 1 star review for a local restaurant that actually serves good food that I enjoy but I truly felt the service I received warrants such a poor review. I ordered a Pork Belly Rice, a 3-cup tofu, a stir-fried A Choy, and an extra bowl of rice. Issue 1: I asked if the 3-cup tofu could be prepared vegetarian, and the lady helping me said "yes." It was NOT vegetarian. I can understand if it was a modification that they don't normally do, and told me they couldn't do it. I mean it's listed as a vegetarian restaurant but sure, there may be dishes that they can only prepare certain ways, or if it was prepared beforehand so that it could be quick service. There's a variety of different reasons why that would be fine. However this wasn't the case. I asked her in Mandarin if they could prepare it vegetarian and she said "yes." Then I watched the cook prepare the entire dish on the spot. I didn't think anything of it because I couldn't see what ingredients he was grabbing for the dish, nor could I verify with certainty that he was preparing it for my order. But now that I'm thinking back, I don't recall her mentioning to him at all to hold the pork, or to make it vegetarian. Issue 2: This is my third time eating at QQ Kitchen. The prior two times I've had it I wasn't the one who went to pick up the meals, but I'm not sure why it could be any different. I wasn't given or offered a tea with my Pork Belly Rice meal. It is my understanding that if the order was a rice dish, that it would come with a free tea. It's beside the point that I would have declined the tea as I am not a fan of sweet teas, but I would have liked to be given the option, just like everyone else in the restaurant was. I should say that as I was waiting for my food to be prepared, a number of customers who possibly ordered on the phone came to pick up their orders, all of whom received between 1-3 cups of tea. This wasn't a surprise to me as we were given teas in previous visits as well, and today wasn't any different. Except that they didn't offer one to me. I wasn't expecting any tea for the 3-cup tofu or the A choy, but I should have received one for my pork belly rice. Issue 3: Cash only, no receipt, you get what you pay for and you can't know how much it costs. The total for my order came out to $41.83. The A Choy wasn't on the menu so I couldn't verify how much it was supposed to cost, but should it cost as much as their 3-cup tofu regular side? The price of something isn't anything I would normally complain about, and with a receipt, I could have verified this. I only became suspicious as I asked her if it was cash only and she said yes, I started to pull out cash and had pulled out $41 (out of $41.83) and she said it was fine. I insisted and pulled out another $1 bill, which she accepted, and then didn't give me any change (???) 1) The fact that $41 was enough made me feel as if I was had 2) Doing some mental math made me feel suspicious that my A choy costed more than it should have 3) Then to not receive any change or even be offered change is honestly just ridiculous. Again, if I had a receipt, I could verify all of this information and wouldn't feel so cheated. But I didn't get one. Lastly, I can imagine you would think that I can just ask for any of these things to be fixed on the spot, but I truly believe that responsibility shouldn't be on the paying customer. This place has been around for years! I remember coming here when I was in high school with my friends and how I'm back here with my husband. Pricing has always been competitive. I think I used to pay $5.50 for a meal and a drink and years later, it's now about $8 for meal and a drink. It's a lot of good food and my husband said it's super authentic! We love their pork chop rice, intestines with ginger, gua bao (Taiwanese "burger" with pork belly in a white Bao bun), milk drinks- I really enjoy the papaya and strawberry milk drinks. I'll definitely be back for more and love supporting our small businesses in the area. They also sell buns, but you have to order those in advance. They look very delicious and fresh too. No surprise to me that the vegetable is very done (soft/soggy or cook to death as I like to call it - they always do that at almost every Asian restaurant) and oily, but the the taste is good. Parking is easy as they have a private lot that's shared with other nearby businesses. The restaurant has a mom and pop feel to it with a handful of booth seating and an open display of the cooking area. There is a gender neutral bathroom located towards the back of the restaurant. Vegetarians, please keep in mind that while they serve vegetarian food, they also have dishes where they use meat. The menu is double sided with one side having dishes with meat and the other side with vegetarian dishes. I ordered the rice cake, curry vermicelli, pineapple fried rice, and a side of spring rolls. The food came out quick and was piping hot. Everything was tasty, but they served the spring rolls with a side of ketchup which I found to be an interesting choice (I tried it on one and didn't use it again). The pineapple fried rice and the curry vermicelli had egg and vegetarian ham. Overall, it was a nice place to grab a quick vegetarian meal. There are other places that are nicer and have a larger selection of vegetarian food. This would be my first time going here after this restaurant has been open for about ten years or so. They have vegetarian alternatives to most all their dishes and are known for their pork chop rice. The place specializes in taiwanese dishes and does an okay job and offers good vegetarian alternatives. Their pork chop rice was not bad, but I didn't really like their stinky tofu and vegetarian noodle soup dishes (pretty bland). The worst part about eating here was the awkward/weird service. I had already eaten so I just ordered stinky tofu... then they kept asking me if I wanted something. They don't bring you water. They watch you as you eat. They didn't bother bringing water to the table even though we sat down to eat.... It was up there on the most awkward dining situations I've ever been. After I got a box to go from asking, they stood next to the table waiting for me to scoop things into the box so they could collect the plate. We ordered pop corn chickens (decent but I don't taste the basil), pork chop rice (they put good amount of pork chop but they were fatty, taste good), pineapple fried rice (this is good with many shrimp, carrots and pineapple), curry rice noodle (it is ok but I will not order this again), beef noodle soup (this is also good and the beef was tender). I love coming here for the inexpensive prices, friendly staff, and authentic Taiwanese food. Every so often I get the craziest cravings for their rou geng mi fen (mushroom and pork rice noodle soup) with heaps of the amazing chili oil they provide. The starchy pork noodle soup has cilantro, thinly sliced bamboo, carrots, shiitake mushrooms and is seasoned with white pepper and black vinegar. It is the perfect dish for a cold or rainy evening. The three cup chicken is fresh, juicy, and incredibly aromatic with the basil, ginger, and whole garlic. Pretty much every rice dish here is yummy as well. I am sad that the tea jelly is no longer included as dessert (now on the drink menu) but it is definitely worth ordering. I have been going to QQ with my family since its inception and have gone through its many ownership changes, so it will always have a special place in my heart. This used to be a purely vegetarian restaurant, but now one side of the menu has options with meat. The complimentary chilled (sweetened) tea is very good: you get a choice of red or green. I can vouch for the green, which is as good as at some of the specialty boba/tea places we have been to! Dan Dan noodles here are pretty good. The popcorn chicken rice, however, is to die for.
