This family-owned restaurant is best known for its sesame onion bread. We love it so much that we're willing to drive an hour and a half just for that !! They make it fresh in limited quantities, and it sells out fast. Definitely call ahead to reserve/order it, so you don't miss out. The thick, layered presentation alone makes it worth experiencing at least once. Flavor-wise, though, it was a little underwhelming. Our friend even commented that there wasn't enough green onion! I ended up dipping pieces into the Green Onion Stir-Fried Beef, which added much-needed flavor and made the combination a lot better. Overall, I'm glad I got to experience such a unique dish, but I probably wouldn't come back specifically for the sesame pie. Got one Fish Fillet with Bean Sauce and one Green Onion Sesame Pie. First spoke with a lady, but she didn't seem to speak English. Shortly afterwards, she handed the phone to a young gentleman. He was nice and spoke English fine. Thanks for taking my order swiftly! They are located on Las Tunas Drive in Temple City. Upon arrival, I was lucky to find free street parking right in front of the restaurant. Not 100% sure if they have any dedicated parking behind their building. Upon entry, I noticed this restaurant is not very big, but still comfortable in size. It has 7 tables with 2 big 1 medium and 4 small. Interior decor was very simple with neutral colors. My order was ready. Young gentleman collected my payment. He asked if I needed any utensils. Thanks for the great service! OMG... fish fillet dish had tons of fish slices! Fish was tender and soft. Came for lunch recently, and tried 3 dishes: Green onion sesame pie: good portion, but the inside felt undercooked and it was a bit lacking in flavor. House Special Bean Curd: Normally love this dish, and while the flavor was good, the tofu is actually cut too thin so it lacked any chew (or QQ). Fried Red Yeast Pork Belly: Wanted to try something interesting and new, and this was a fun choice. Very interesting and also heats back up well in an oven. Service was friendly. I can't help but feel like they could optimize their table layout a lot better, and perhaps bring in an additional server - there ends up being a very long wait for 2-4 person groups. Green Onion Sesame Pie: This prized basket of northern-style flatbread is probably what most people here are waiting for. The fried bread is cut into wedges with a crispy crackling exterior topped with fragrant sesame seeds. Inside, the bread layers are soft, pillowy, and bursting with green onions. Of course, it was the first thing that arrived, so we each voraciously ate a wedge on its own. Fish Filet with Bean Sauce: If you have enough self control, wait until they bring out the fish. The sauce is thick and savory. There's so much flavor from the minced garlic, fermented black beans, and scallions. The rich pork belly is marinated in red yeast rice wine for its aromatic flavor. It is coated in tapioca flour and then fried. The edges are crispy and kind of chewy while the meat is juicy and tender. Tofu Skin, Soy Beans, and Mustard Greens: The super thin tofu sheets and soy beans are a Shanghainese classic. With finely chopped mustard greens, the dish is a delightful study of textures: crunchy greens, chewy soy beans, and snappy from the tofu skin. The flavor is neutral and nourishing. It has been a long time since I've had Aghoo's Kitchen. This is an updated review for my most recent takeout experience. I used to order a variety of dishes from here, but this time, I just wanted my two favorite items: Fish Fillet with Bean Sauce ($17.95) and the Signature Green Onion Sesame Pie ($17.95). Both of these needs to be ordered together because dipping the Green Onion Sesame Pie into the Bean Sauce is the perfect flavor combo! Both of these dishes tastes just as good as I remembered. I always use an air fryer to reheat the Green Onion Sesame Pie at home for that crispy texture. The ambiance of this restaurant is a bit sad. Over the years, they have not made any improvements to the decor or any other updates for that matter. It's a very bare bones looking restaurant and honestly, it feels like I'm in someone's garage. Once upon a time, in the 90s, the Taiwanese population was small, close knit, like the Jewish community. Your ex's Taiwanese uncle was the angel investor that jump started Jerry Yang's Yahoo.com. Your other friend's uncle was the VP to Terry Gou founder of Hon Hai Precision's (the company that makes all the iPhones), your friend's dad was locked up in Taiwan because he was the head of the United Bamboo Triads. Every Taiwanese person in LA and the West Coast probably had a 2 degree of separation with everyone else. And so like the Italians, you needed family restaurants to congregate at, and Aghoo precisely is that type of restaurant where Taiwanese Boomers and their children go sit down and have comfort food. This is a school of cooking that many chefs from Mainland China simply cannot replicate today. And there were only a few restaurants in Los Angeles 30 years ago capable of doing it: Happy Family Garden Pacific Plaza 新園餐館, Dumpling King 老夫子 Hacienda Heights Vons Plaza, Sin Bala 新芭樂 Arcadia, and Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐 Arcadia Location One. That being said, I've always wanted to go back to Taiwan and apprentice under an old school chef and learn this school of stir-fry, you know, carry on the torch. In Taiwan, you used to be able to go to a street stall and order 100 different types of stir fry for dirt cheap, and so the chefs that had the grit to do it became masters at stir fry, authentic green onion beef not that fake Mongolian Beef created for the American Audience...although I equally like the American version. So yes, it was a sigh of relief when I discovered Aghoo. One of the remnants of a lost art form in the diverse world of cuisine. It was survival for the Boomer generation to stand next to a wok all day, to support the business and to support the family. Unlike Italian food, you can't premake Lasagna, Meatballs, marinara sauce and just assemble everything last minute with fresh cooked pasta. No, Taiwanese stir fry is bittersweet hard labor....very mechanical in nature, and the chef needs to understand all the inputs. So these days, Jurassic Restaurant has closed, Uncle Yu's 印第安啤酒屋 had shut down. Leaving.....Aghoos? And yes, Eat Joy in Rowland Heights. Come to think about it, if you take out Din Tai Fung from the picture, these are the last of the Mohicans..... I'll end here with my walk down memory lane. You want the Taiwanese version of that Italian style Family sit down restaurant, this is it. It's a cozy mom and pop shop with the sweetest lady taking orders and serving food. Because it's just her, service does take awhile, but it looks like she has really loyal customers like they know her and she knows them. Very popular item though! All the tables were ordering this maybe give it a try if you're curious. Seaweed fish ($18)-- VERYYYYYY OILY GREASY like the fish soaked up every drop of oil. Not the "clean fry" I was expecting (and other places do it better). It was too oily and we couldn't finish this. House Special Bean Curd ($18)-- There's pork in here but you wouldn't know unless you can read the Chinese. Just warning the vegetarians, this is not for you!!! However, there is a very tiny amount where the ratio is like 85% tofu 15% pork if I'm being generous. Flavor was ok, but overall very greasy and stingy with pork. We ate this with the scallion pie to give the bread some flavor. Overall I wasn't impressed with the food but I think it's just not my style. The beef wrap is the only reason why it's 3 stars and not 2. The lady was so nice though and kept refilling our tea pot (because we were trying to chase down that grease with hot tea!) and there's a parking lot in the back and easy street parking. read more

Had to check this place out as I grew up eating Chinese Islamic food and heard their sesame bread was good. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. I would eat the sesame bread every day. It was crispy on the outside and so soft and fluffy on the inside. Delicious especially when you dip it in the fish bean sauce. The fish in bean sauce was perfectly cooked and the sauce was savory and a perfect companion to the sesame bread. The mustard green, tofu skin and soy beans was good. I've had better as it was a little too salty. But this dish paired perfectly with everything else we ate. The highlight and unexpected stand out was the pork belly. I honestly didn't know what to expect when we ordered this dish. I thought it would be more like a braised dish. But man was I surprised. This is essentially char Siu that they batter like the Taiwanese pork chops. So you know this is a winning dish. This place isn't too big and they had a line out the door with people waiting for dinner. Definitely come here early. Staff was friendly and as quick as they could be. Finally got a chance to dine in here a few days ago when I came here for lunch on a weekday with some coworkers. It was full inside surprisely but luckily, a table was leaving so we got our table without a wait. We ordered the Beef Rolls, Signature Green Onion Pie, Stir Fried Onions and Beef, and some vegetables. It is a small restaurant that is family style so only one server and the food wasn't served that quickly especially since it was full inside. The food was ready around 20 minutes after ordering. The portions are all decent and looked delicious. The beef rolls were very good, crispy skin and not stingy with the beef inside. The signature green onion sesame pie was also very good, texture is the perfect balance of hard and soft. The only thing was that the vegetables and the stir fried beef was oily. One of my favorite restaurants in LA. A hidden gem that I really don't want to share but am because y'all all need to come here!!! The dry bean curd dish is honestly one of my favorites. They cut the bean curd so precisely and so thinly, even the baby loves it! They make this potato stir fry in vinegar and it is such a light but filling dish. Ahgoo is a small restaurant with very minimal employees (I'm guessing one chef who does all the cooking, one prep guy, one dishwasher, and one lady who works the front) so expect a long wait for your food. The woman who took my order didn't speak any English or Cantonese, so Google Translate came to the rescue when I needed to order some vegan-friendly dishes to-go for my husband. I, on the other hand, ordered their beef roll and sauteed water spinach to dine in. The beef roll was wrapped in a crispy, heavily-sesamed dough, but it lacked the hoisin sauce that I'm typically accustomed to so I had to make my own sauce concoction of vinegar, soy sauce, and chili crisp. The jury is still out on whether I like that much sesame on my beef roll. The water spinach was delicious as it was garlicky and well-seasoned. We shall find out later if the vegan-friendly mapo tofu and sauteed green beans is a hit or not. Because it took almost an hour (and I was one of two customers dining within) for my food and to-go order, I don't think I'll be coming back again. Patience is not one of my virtues. read more

We're the type of family that never leaves OC and so seeing restaurants like this on Sandra L's and other yelpers feed just made me immediately bookmark but also green with envy. It probably took us 3 or more years to take a day off for ourselves and travel up to SGV to try restaurants that has been in our que. We tried calling right when they opened, several times, but no one ever picked up. So we had to wait awhile after ordering to get our food, roughly 15 mins. The establishment looked like it's been around for awhile with a mom and pop feel. I can't say much to the service, friendly enough, since we ordered to-go. After 15 minutes, we greedily grabbed our bag of food, ran back to the car and had a taste. Damn that thick onion bread hit just all the right spots we knew there'd be a repeat trip just for the bread. Luckily, the SGV gods were on our side and about 2 months later we were able to come up here again and purchased 2 orders of the green onion pancake. I love reheating it in the microwave for instantaneous green onion/carb gratification. We've also tried the fish in bean sauce ($18) and basil eggplant ($16). Ahgoo" in Taiwanese Chinese means "maternal uncle," referring to your mother's brother.  Origin: This term is commonly used in Taiwanese Hokkien, a Southern Chinese dialect widely spoken in Taiwan Ahgoo's. Kitchen in Temple City is on Las Tunas and unlike Glendora's fast food lined streets has a nice selection of small unique eateries. My sister's favorite is the "Beef Wrap" elaborately made with thinly sliced beef, rolled in a beautifully browned crust with a sprinkle of sesame seeds on top with a slight taste of sweetness mixed with spices. Somehow the name Beef wrap just doesn't do it justice, it just seems like it should be named something like "Taiwanese sesame crusted beef wrap with cilantro & special sauce", or something like "Emperor's beef wrap" "Taiwanese Beef Rolls have deep-rooted historical ties, but their story extends beyond Taiwan's borders. While the exact origin remains somewhat unclear, one prevailing theory traces their roots to Shanghai, a bustling city in northeastern China" We had the Westlake beef soup, just a slight variation from the chinese version of the ingredients plus it had finely chopped ingredients , stir fried water spinach, so far this was my favorite and mixed with the , Taiwanese Fried Noodles so good. The Pickled Cabbage w bean sheet with edamame. First time to try this, it was very good. The Taiwanese noodles were very similar to Pancit Bihon one of my favorite Filipino dishes. Plus, I just mixed them with the fried water spinach for lunch, so delicious. We always order a variety from new restaurants to get a feel for what our favorites might be and it then they even taste better warmed up the next day. The beef rolls here are AHHHMAZINGG. Like, so good that my aunt who stopped eating meat will still scrap off all the beef just to eat the roll part. It's crispy, and perfectly seasoned with the sauce. If it's your first time, def get the beef roll and the seaweed fish filet. They're both cooked so so well. Crispy but doesn't feel overly oily or heavy. The beef roll is stuffed with so so much meat. So good! I used to frequent 101 noodle express for their beef rolls but the beef rolls here at ahgoo's are in a league of their own! The cold combination plate was also really good but it def has a kick of spicy so it may not be for those who can't handle heat. Also, that entree didn't come with rice, rice is an additional $2. Their signature green onion pie is definitely not bomb or to die for. Idk why it would be their signature and not even taste good. I had half a slice and drowned it in vinegar. It's like they give a lot knowing it tastes bad to make up for the price you paid for it. It came out in a to-go box already instead of a plate. This was my first time trying this place. It has a decent sized dining area and we got seated right away. I haven't tried too many Taiwanese/Mandarin style restaurants, but this was a surprise. Their seaweed fish dish was amazing. And their beef wrap was outstanding. The meat was tender, the bread was soft but flaky. I tried a variety of dishes. From veggies to noodles, from green onion cake to the beef wrap and everything was delicious and flavorful. It's good to go with a group as this would be a family style restaurant. Wonderful hole in the wall place for very authentic Chinese cuisine, it's definitely a mix of different regions. You will find dishes like mapo tofu and hot and sour soup which is made very fresh with spices and herbs. They have an onion pancake but it's made in a very thick style, most like onion bread. It's very delicious and picturesque. If you are daring they have other dishes like, such as intestine with tofu and blood cake, intestine with pig ears and tofu. Typical easy to eat dish would be the shredded tofu and the onion pancakes and the rice noodle dish. Ahgoo's kitchen is a stable place for our family. We always bring friends to Din Tai Fung or Ahgoo when they ask for Taiwanese foods. Their onion pancakes are must have. Found this place while walking around the area and decided to give it a try. The first thing when you enter the waiters ask if you want the green onion sesame pies and we decided to give it a try. They give you hot tea and they didn't charge extra for it. Rice cost $1.50 extra per bowl. In terms of food I gave these a try. Signature Green Onion Sesame Pie - They ask all customers if they want this and it's totally worth getting. Btw it comes with 8 pieces, so it's no joke and easily sharable for 6-8 people. The pieces are big boys so you probably need just one per person. This is absolutely delicious though, soft flakey and the dough was super fresh. An easy (5/5). Mapo Tofu - I really enjoyed this. Saucy and tons of flavor. Really good with white rice. (4.5/5) Stewed Chicken with ginger and wine - This wasn't my favorite because there were tiny bones. The taste was overall really good but you have to be careful for the tiny bones. (3.5/5) Basil Eggplant - This was solid. Really soft packed with a plenty of sauce. For some reason this came so late we were almost already done with our food when it arrived. They probably forgot the order so we ended up taking it home. Nothing super special, it's a classic. (4/5) Fish filet with bean sauce - I love saucy white fish and this does not disappoint. The fish was soft and melty and sauce was full of flavor. Definitely get white rice with this. (5/5) For a small restaurant this place really makes great food. They do speak a little bit of English but if you know mandarin that would help a lot. Small menu makes it easier to choose items. I would be back but probably order less dishes, the dishes are pretty sizable. Was like $104 for 5 dishes before tax. Worth a try! read more

My parents have been coming here forever for their sesame green onion cakes. We typically pre-order and come pickup. They make it super fluffy with lots of green onions. The outside is crunchy crispy and the inside - warm fluffy and savory. Honestly I haven't found any other place that is better! read more
