I had a couple of computers that I never wanted to turn over to e-waste because I had sensitive data that I wanted wiped. I know deleting files does not permanently remove the data, if you know how to retrieve it. I took them to Purl and Eric was AMAZING!! He removed the data drives and destroyed them right in front of me. It took him a matter of minutes and I have FULL faith the data will never be retrieved from those things. I have a 2014 MacBook Pro with Retina display. It's a wonderful computer and still runs well, but the battery was no longer holding a charge. I bought a third-party replacement battery on Amazon for $49 and took it to The Apple Store to see if they would install it. They refused to install it, and they also said that I shouldn't trust third party batteries (despite the high rating on Amazon) and that I should send it back. I was told a bunch of mumbo jumbo about how third party batteries don't work and will destroy my computer. They tried to pressure me into leaving my laptop there and charging me $199 (plus tax) for them to replace it. I told them that I wasn't ready for that right now and decided to contact Purl Computers. They installed it for $100, and now it works wonderfully. It's like having a (nearly) new computer for $149, and it's hard to beat that. Also, the staff here seem super chill and pleasant. All in all, I'm a fan. read more

My sons 5 year old computer wouldn't read any media upon boot and I was on the verge of purchasing a new laptop for him. I called up Purl Computers and talked to Timothy who said they can do a diagnostic for $20. I thought, why not? After a day, Timothy called me and said they needed to rebuild the OS. I gave permission and in less than two hours got a call saying everything was fixed and good to go. They even saved the data on the hard drive! I was happy to get the computer fixed for less than $200, my son is a little disappointed he didn't get a new $2k Alienware system. I thank Purl Computers for my win! read more

Do not go here for computer repairs!! I had a cracked laptop computer screen that I brought in for a quote. I did not need a diagnostic since I was 100% sure that the cracked screen was the issue. They required me to leave the computer in order to obtain an estimation, which seemed odd in the first place. When I returned, they gave me a quote of $700 to repair the computer which is not much less than what I paid in the first place. The worse part, they charged me $20 for that quote!! That is ridiculous , what a scam!!! That would be like having to pay for an estimation for a car part! I always try to support small businesses but this is just bad business Here is the best part, we ordered a screen directly from the manufacturer and my son replaced it himself for $80!!! Watch out Purl, we may open our own business and charge a fraction of what you charge and I would NEVER charge someone to look up a part! read more

Brought my son's computer in was working he was playing games with several other people his fan was making noise we figured it was from being dirty because we can't clean the inside. Eric the tech Fair did not call me I finally called him the next day and he proceeded to tell me that he did a hard clean on it and then the computer doesn't start the graphic cards no good and that basically I brought in a computer that was not working. Don't you start the computer up first before you even clean it check it out I guess not but it was working with no problems other than the fan. I don't normally write reviews but feel this one is warranted. I recently dropped a friends laptop and cracked the screen. I took it to Purl to get it fixed as quickly as I could. The tech emailed the owner (Ron) to get me a quote on the repair. Shortly after, I got a call back with the price Of $350 for the new screen and $150 for the install. I said order the part because it was not my computer and wanted it fixed ASAP. Meanwhile I got a return call from Five Star Networking who told me the part would be $115 and $75 for the repair. I then called Purl back two hours after the part was ordered and said I would like to cancel the order and was told the part was already shipped. When the part came in, I took it to Five Star to get installed and they told me it was the wrong part. I returned the part to Purl for a full refund. currently I am getting the computer repaired for $250 less at Five Star Networking. Moral of the story is do your homework. read more

I went to the Geek Squad because my computer wasn't coming back on after it went into hibernation, in addition I thought I might have something wrong with a fan. They told me that they would have to have it about a month because they needed to send it out for repair of the fan first and then look at the software issue after that. So they had my computer a month only to call me and tell me that they could not get me a fan from HP and that the fan not working properly was the reason that my software was not working properly. This was of course after I purchased $300 protection that allowed me to get service on my said computer for the next year. They told me that my computer was 2 years old and wasn't understand warranty anymore and that HP was no longer servicing my computer and said that I should just buy a new computer to get the warranty and the service. WHAT A SERIOUS RIP OFF!!!! I went onto Amazon and got a fan that works for my computer and received it the following day, Prime. I also took it to Purl Computer in Livermore who had it 1 day, changed the fan and reloaded my Windows 10 as it was somehow corrupted. NOW, MY COMPUTER WORKS PERFECTLY!!! read more

I'm going to agree with another reviewer who said that the customer service was not so great. Oh sure, I received the call after the diagnosis was done and how much it was going to cost to repair it. And, yes, they recommended repairing the computer rather than replacing it - how would I know any different? So I had it repaired. Seems to work fine. But I had to call everytime after that to find out if the repair had been done. No one ever bothered to call me. Nice enough people, just not customer-service oriented enough to my liking. As far as the actual work - I'm not a computer geek, so how would I know if it was done correctly? That's the sad part about these types of issues. You are at their mercy :-( read more

Wanted to support my city, called to see if they were open for me to come in and bring my laptop. The woman who answered was rude, 'yea you can bring it in -- tomorrow. We're closing in a few minutes." It was 5:12 when I called, they close at 5:30. I asked if I could come in tonight, with an attitude, she said if I could make it in before she locked the doors that's fine, as if I were bothering her by coming in at the last minute. I get it, no one wants to stay at work late but there's no need for the tired cranky attitude - especially not towards potential clients. I wanted to rush down as I live maybe 4 blocks away and could have easily made it in before they closed. However I thought, do I really want to give my money to someone who seems to not appreciate it or me as a future client for that matter? Nope. I'm giving Purl Computers just two stars because they opted not to repair my mac (I won't say couldn't fix) when it was actually a very simple fix by another company. To be fair, customer service was fine, diagnostic rates seem good ($20 diagnostic, no charge if they don't or can't fix it). Based on what Purl told me I would have essentially thrown my macbook pro in the garbage because they deemed it not worth fixing. They said that it was the logic board, and that this item for macs is hard to get. I immediately went online to see what information I could find and discovered several companies selling mac logic boards, but I was skeptical since Purl said it wasn't fixable. I found another company (my green mac repair dot com) who said that it didn't seem like a problematic repair. They provided me a prepaid shipping label, I sent the computer to them, heard back within the week that it was indeed the logic board and that it was absolutely fixable, and had the computer mailed back to me within a couple of days after that. I am guessing that Purl, although they advertise that they do mac repairs, didn't want to work on it. And this would be just fine with me--I might still take a pc there if I ever need to--I just think maybe NOT advertising that they fix macs wouId be more accurate. read more

When my hubby used my laptop for five minutes and got a virus, I rushed over to Purl for help. They took my computer right away, gave me the price up front, fixed the computer, and installed a free virus protection (mine had to be uninstalled during the process). When i asked if I needed to purchase an upgrade to the free virus protection, they actually said "No." Imagine my surprise when no one tried to upsell me on something I didn't need! Although Purl Computer has been very helpful, at no charge, several times, this time was different. They SAID they tested my laptop and the battery was okay, and advised me to go online to get a replacement charger cord (much easier said than done on a small cell phone reviewing numerous options for my laptop model). Because 24-3O hours later, when I went into the laptop to put in the order, the battery was drained. Did they actually charge it? If there were problems with the laptop battery, why weren't they caught? If there was some other issue, why wasn't I informed? I am a senior and not particularly tech savvy. I would have been glad to pay them to figure out the cord code for my laptop, but apparently that was not on their menu of options. When I brought these issues Ron Purl and his assistant, I was told they did not have time for this discussion. I then mentioned Yelp and Ron told me not to come back to their store. If you are a senior in my position, or care about someone like me, I recommend you go elsewhere for your computer help. read more

This guy is very arrogant he did something for me about a two years ago, I never hired him again he was good when we first met, then there was a issue with a update that needed to be done on the equipment he installed. I had no idea at the time what was going on because I had never encountered this issue before while installing this particular device. To make a long story short he pulls up gets out of his truck with a attitude and says what am I doing here. I explained that the device still was not working so he whips out his computer and I'm on the phone with tech from the manufacturer. He tells me to just hang up on them very dismissive. And frustrated. Even waved his hand, Like don't bother me. He downloads the update and says there. I was baffled and offered to pay him. He got nicer then but still rambled on about how it was his name on the side of the building or something just arrogant nonsense. And that was that, I've never called or used him again. Crazy thing is the building he works out of i've been hired to work on before he was there. I own a company also and I've had bad days also and gotten short maybe it was just one if those days. But first impressions are important. My computer crashed on a Saturday and I brought it into Purl Computer around 1PM (before they closed at 3PM). They said that they'd run diagnostic right away and call me to let me know what was wrong. No call back, so I called them on Monday morning and was told that my HD was corrupted but the technician (owner?) would call me back shortly to tell me more and how to proceed. However, no call back despite leaving several messages on Monday and Tuesday. I finally connected with the technician on Tuesday evening and was told that they could replace the HD and transfer data for $313. I said that I'd let them know the following morning and left a vmail on Wednesday at 8AM that I wanted them to proceed with this job but again, no call back. I finally connect with them again on Friday but now I understand that they have no replacement HD but, it doesn't matter since the problem is not with my HD but with my mother board. Then the suggestion comes that I buy one of their rebuilt computers using my (miraculously working) HD. I declined. I get a message on Saturday morning that my HD is ready to be picked up and I come get it. They hand me the HD but where's the rest of the computer? Well, "we just assumed you'd want us to recycle it and it's not fully assembled." This is beyond unprofessional and frankly seems fishy. I'm guessing some parts of my "recycled" computer will be used in a computer that Purl will sell as their own. Uncool. Bottom line is, I lost trust in Purl. Not to mention that the customer service was very confrontational and unfriendly. I cannot recommend that you use Purl for your computer repair needs. read more

Ron Purl gets it done. He is a real pro and made our transition from a home office setting to a traditonal space a lot easier. When we first started the process of networking our small construction company with multiple computers both onsite and remotely we weren't exactly sure what equipment we needed. Ron walked us thru various options and several cost saving options that we could maximize what we already had on hand and free online services. Even when we hit a glitch with our Quickbook software it was no issue, Ron jumped right on it and worked out the kinks in no time. Ron has done system upgrades and repairs for our company before but this networking project was definately his largest job with us and we are very satisfied. They had my computer for months and told me it was repaired, but it was not. When I finally took it elsewhere I found that what was supposed to be corrected with my computer had never even been done! So, from personal experience I urge you NOT to take your computer to Purl, but if you do, make sure you put it in your credit card in case you need to dispute it later.
