This was my first time using a storage facility and I was pleasantly surprised! I called ahead of actually booking and scheduled a time to swing by to see the available units in person. The staff was helpful in explaining how everything worked and our options. The units were clean and well maintained. I like how the security of this facility works where they give you your own unique code to punch in to access the facility in general and to use the elevators. I also liked the online tools to help decide on the size of unit to rent. It was easy to complete my reservation online and they even have an app to manage your unit. read more

DON'T USE THIS STORAGE. This is THE WORST storage ever seen anywhere in Chicago, or in the whole States! When I helped my son to move his stuff into this storage, we already experienced something not quite pleasant, broken elevator, dirty unit floor, rent increase, unresponsive staff, even if you see them in the office, they never pick up the call, voicemail only and always. Have you ever moved the big couch and TV stands through a narrow staircase tunnel to the 7th floor before? yea, we did! But I can promise you this is not the worst. On July 11, 2025 we planned to move the stuff out and load to the U-Haul as quickly as possible due to our tight schedules. When we got to the storage we found out that one of the docking bays was already occupied by a yellow Penske truck, and we thought it would not be that bad, coz there is another bay available at least. But when we opened the other gate, we were shocked, - we found a dark red SUV parked over there, and no activities at all around it. We asked the Penske moving staff if it was their vehicle, and the response was no. My son went to the office asking the staff about it, and he got some responses like 'it is a first come first serve policy', 'we can do nothing about it', 'we can't move the customer's vehicle even if nothing happens there'. We waited over for a while, hoping the customer would show up and move the SUV out, but nothing happened. I went to the office again, and talked with the staff George, and I unsurprisingly got the same response. At that moment we knew we had to do it the hard way: we had to unload the stuff in the middle of the docking area and carry them down through the stairs, and a long alley outside the storage where our U-Haul was parked. The door was closing with an unadjustable ancient timer, we needed to struggle quite a bit when we two carried the heavy stuff and the door was to close. That was very exhausting work. It was supposed to finish pretty quickly, but it was dragged way deep into the night. You will not feel surprised if I tell you that our schedules afterwards were all screwed up. And here is the most 'beautiful' part of our story: Around 5 pm when we were unloading the stuff in the docking area, we saw George get out of the office with a backpack on shoulder. No one would have a second thought except that he was ready to go home. When he saw us, the embarrassment was just flushing out from his face. He chatted with us a bit, yea, and embarrassingly, and then he went back to his office. We went back upstairs for another load, and when we were back to the docking area again, the SUV was gone, and, yea, George was gone too. There is a big TV in the office showing the activities from a lot of spots/angles by the surveillance cameras. Do you need to know anything more to understand what has happened?!! At that moment my third finger flew up into the sky. Hey Mr. George, I write this review by intentionally giving a lot of details like date, time, the color of the Penske, and certainly your name, and you are sooo and soooo welcomed to challenge me for any details I mentioned above. And if you are confident in the size of your balls, you can defend yourself too. You know what you did, do you? Hey Public Storage management, I am not sure how your HR policy works, but let's assume that this is your own business, would you even consider keeping such an employee with such a horrible incident? If that SUV was from a customer, I would still feel mad, but would not as much as is now. We two talked with him in a very frustrating but very polite tone, and he declined us both. I don't think he did not see our struggles the whole time with that big TV in front of him. It is really hard to imagine how brazen he would be in his job or with other customers. I will post this same review to whatever platform I know. If Mr. George had such guts to do that, I am sure he would have the same guts to take care of the consequences from that. Stopped by this Public Storage on a Tuesday after work at 5:15PM. Let me start by saying I wouldn't recommend calling their general line. When I called to get general information, the guy pushed for me to get a reservation like it was a sale. I wasn't a fan. I arrived and spoke with Amanda - she was very helpful and promptly showed me 2 different sizes of storage lockers. When we went back down to the office she explained office pricing. Since I had made the reservation on the phone and the online prices were better, she cancelled my reservation for me so I could go home and create a new one (yay). I ran home, made the reservation, and came back at 5:30pm and finished the paperwork for a locker the same day. The reservation DOES NOT guarantee you a locker at the location you want - you have to go fill out the paperwork to lock it in. For a 10x5, climate controlled unit I ended up getting it for $1 the first month and then $58 per month. You'll have to pay a one time $25 admin fee, a one time fee for a lock for your locker, and you'll also need to get insurance on your locker for each month (an added expense I didn't know about). If you have homeowners insurance that covers off site storage, you won't need this. Overall Amanda was helpful and informative. I haven't had any problems with this location yet and was just thankful to have it all squared away so quickly. read more

2 stars for the facility. There was a leak in my unit that destroyed many of my belongings. The building is secure, but not super clean and there's often broken lights. It's pretty scary to be there after hours. 5 stars for the service. Amanda is helpful, polite, thorough and doesn't waste your time. She was kind and informative when I discovered the leak in my unit, informed me of my insurance options, and even helped me dispose of some of my ruined belongings. read more

This is ridiculous... so both times I came here to return some unused boxes , once on a Monday around 11 am and then once on Wednesday at 5pm and they have this ridiculous sign up... like are you serious ? If you are going to keep closing early then you might as well adjust your hours on the store front. Never have I ever been to a place where you leave the store during mid day and then never return... for 5 hours ?? I didn't wait that long but did stay around for 15 Min or so and no one shows up .. I'm reporting this to the management of this establishment because this is no way to do business. Very unprofessional. read more

If I could give his place a 1/2 star I would. I am sorry to say that customer service is non-existent here. I moved out at the 24th of October. I scheduled the move-out via their web site. Imagine my surprise when not only did I receive another statement for November, but a late fee. I called the property, they gave me some lame excuse about not removing the lock. I told them it was THEIR lock and not included in the rental agreement I signed. I then called the customer service department. The lady acted as if I was interrupting something important that she was doing. I explained my situation. She hemmed and hawed and directed me to the regional manager. I had to call him 3 times before he graced me with a return call. When I finally spoke to him, he told me it didn't matter that it wasn't in the agreement, it wouldn't change anything. DON'T USE THE FACILITY LOCATED AT 947 W. VAN BUREN. IT IS A SCAM. SAVE YOURSELF THE FRUSTRATION OF HAVING TO DEAL WITH NON-EXISTENT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND "MYSTERY AGREEMENTS". read more

I have had nothing but trouble with this company. When first signing up I intended to use another location but was told by the reservation specialist that this location was cheaper. I expressed my concern that this location had far worse Yelp rating but was assured there were no real issues I would encounter. My experience could not be further from that. When I went to sign my lease and pick up the keys, no one was there. This was after I had confirmed my appointment the day before. The sign on the office said they were helping another customer so I waited for almost an hour but no one came. There was no alternative number for me to call so I listened as the phone rang inside the office with no one to answer. In resolving this issue the manager was no help at all. I asked the person to have the manager call me before I came back in and she never did. In fact when I showed up for my rescheduled appointment she showed me the message that said "call Katharine at noon" but it was 5PM and she had never called. I was under a tight timeline and didn't have an opportunity to switch storage units so I proceeded with using this company. I expressed concern that the unit might be too small (esp with the column that took up part of the unit space) but was unsure since storage and moving is not my speciality. The woman I worked with told me that it would be easy to switch units the next day (if it ended up being too small) and that I should proceed with the smaller unit. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE! Sure enough my movers let me know if was too small and that I would need the larger unit. After my movers finished - i was told that I would not get the $1 first months rent bc I was technically a transfer - even though I had signed up the day before. With no choice left I felt I would handle the manner with the regional manager offline. Trying to get ahold and a return call from management was a terrible experience. The corporate 1-800 number directs you back to your local management. Local management has a voicemail that they don't answer and have 48 hrs to return under corporate policy. In my various voicemails I expressed that I was leaving the country and needed to correct this urgently - this did not seem to impact how they handled the manner. When I finally spoke to the regional manager she let me know that she spoke to her employee and that she was positive she informed me on the policy of transferring (that I would lose any promo pricing even though they promote it heavily on their website). I told her this was not the case or I would have never agreed to sign the lease. It was clear she believed her employee more than the customer and I was out of luck. She condescendingly "informed" me that I signed a lease and there was nothing she could do for me. She did agree to a $50 credit for my inconvience for the employee no show - this in no way compensates for the extra $200 I had to spend for the first months rent. However even getting the $50 credit applied was difficult. I had the manager send me an email indicating she would apply the credit and thankfully I did. It took multiple email exchanges and more than a month and a half to get the credit applied. The amount of time I have wasted on the phone and email with Public Storage is horrendous. Would never recommend and will be moving my stuff out promptly on my return. read more

What a nightmare! South garage door was out of service for over 60 days - now freight elevator is out of service for over 60 days - all doors propped open so people can access the small passenger elevator which is too small to move furniture and now beaten up badly - dock areas filthy with broken glass and trash - carts left abandoned on various floors while Kendra the "Manager" sits in her office - when I asked about the freight elevator Kendra said "I told someone" as if that is her only responsibility - she claims her supervisor Tom Dahlberg is handling it - really Tom? 2 months for the garage door and now 2 months of a non-working freight elevator? Met 6 different renters today also trying to move their stuff in/out - all complained about how they cannot access their units easily and how they are being "held hostage" and had to extend their unit for extra time as they cannot do large loads in the freight elevator so moves take longer - Kendra said Tom's responsible and I can contact Tom Dahlberg at tdahlberg@publicstorage.com 630-914-6988 ext 3461 if I want to discuss the issue - I did but have not heard back - after grabbing some items out of my unit, I returned to the office as the elevator alarm was sounding and no one was responding - Kendra sat there despite hearing the alarm - when I suggested she get up and actually do something, she told me to "get out of my office" (have video of it, won't upload) - shame on you Kendra for being lazy and passing the buck - shame on you Tom if you know about the deplorable conditions and do nothing - I hope Tom's supervisor is reading this - this used to be a great location but it's being run into the ground read more

Security and accessibility issues here. One of the garages is currently stuck open and all the doors are unlocked so anyone can wander in, and the freight elevator has been broken since at least August. On my moving day, no one was in the office 30 minutes after it was scheduled to open, and the carts were locked inside, so there was no access to carts while moving heavy furniture. Wouldn't recommend this location. I will say Public Storage made it easy to rent a space, set up renters insurance, and understand all the specifics. They have locks and moving materials for sale at the location so that's convenient at least. But overall, the fact that the facility is so poorly maintained and monitored is such a liability that it trumps any other advantage. read more

Run by thieves. They only let you use a lock that they sell you. Therefore someone in the office keeps a key to your unit. Someone who works at the facility broke into my unit and stole over $10,000 of everything valuable I owned then locked the unit behind them. Unsurprisingly they have no video of the burglary nor did they even care. This place is a total scam and I have to leave the rest of my low value items (clothes/books) in the unit as I can't afford to move to a different location. read more

I wish it were possible to give zero stars here. I only stored my items here for 3 months, and it was definitely 3 months too long. First, during the winter months when it was very cold outside, the two south-facing doors in the alley were completely unsecured/unlocked and anyone could walk into this storage building without entering a code at all. I have seen shopping carts brimming with plastic bags in this building, much like the homeless use around the city. I informed the staff at Public Storage and of course, they denied that the homeless had access to the building. Hmmm, ok. When I moved my items out of my locker on April 11, I saw evidence of water coming from above that appeared to drip on my outer door, and the two outer doors adjacent to my unit. And then, I saw water damage to my items inside my unit. Clearly, water came in from above to my "climate-controlled" storage unit and ruined some of my items (new baby furniture, and I'm due in 11 days). The water was completely brown and most of it had dried by the time I became aware of it, but some water had pooled in items and stained other items. Apparently, Public Storage believes that faults in their facility mean that YOU, the customer, need to buy insurance for this. They clearly do not maintain this VERY OLD building, and will expect you to deal with the repercussions of their neglect. They claim that they offer climate-controlled storage, when in fact, that is not the case. I asked for a reasonable compensation, simply to receive all my money back for the 3 months that I stored items there (around $250) since they did not provide proper storage. I was told by Abdul that would NEVER happen and that if I wanted to get any kind of compensation for this nightmare, I need to submit a claim against my own homeowner's insurance (with a deductible that will meet or exceed the value of the damaged items). Public Storage does NOT care about your items, your satisfaction, or good public relations. My advice: avoid this company like the plague. read more

typically, you pay a self-storage facility to watch your stuff for you. you'd like to think that when you come back to collect your things, that it's all there. well, apparently that scenario is not always the case. from the get-go, the staff was unfriendly. they never answer the phone, they never return phone calls and they make sure you know what a chore it is to help you out. "whatever," i thought, "i don't have to deal with them until i come to get my stuff and close my account in 6 months when i move." fast forward to me opening the door to my locker and seeing that the two most accessible expensive items in the whole locker were, of course, missing. i shouldn't say 'of course' because i really wasn't expecting that, under lock and key, my stuff would mysteriously disappear. i sucked it up and went to deal with the staff. i got a lot of "i don't know what to tell you" and "it's not our policy to open up someone's locker" and whatnot. my movers were there, i didn't have time to deal with it, so i left and dealt with my move. i vented a bit to the movers and they happened to mention that i'm not the only person they've moved out of that specific facility that had their stuff stolen. interesting. when i'd moved in, i'd taken the liberty of inventorying everything in my locker and where it was, and i happen to know exactly what went missing. i phoned in to mention this and insist that someone be more helpful. i asked for the district manager's contact information. i suppose the young woman was tired of talking to me, because instead of getting the info i'd requested, i heard "you're not getting your stuff back" and was hung up on. i headed down to the police station and filed a report. i reviewed my materials from when i created the public storage account and noticed that i had to take out an insurance policy. "great" i thought, "now i'm getting somewhere." i called them up and filed a claim referencing the police report. i receive a call back about a week later and am met with a series of questions. claim denied. "WHAT?!" yes, apparently Willis will only cover the cost of goods lost if there is *visible* evidence of *forced entry*. so, the door needs to be damaged or the chicken wire needs to be cut. if someone takes it upon themselves to pick the lock, you are S.O.L. and no one cares. end of story. apparently, this is a well known fact within the self-storage community. after googling it i discovered that this isn't an isolated incident. in fact, it's a popular phenomenon. there's even a book written about it. do yourself a favor and rent a garage somewhere or find some place reputable. read more

The storage lockers are fine. The problem is the building is not maintained very well. Primary cargo elevators and loading dock doors have been out of order for weeks. Also, almost impossible to reach them by phone. We are moving to another storage company. read more

Clean and organized, while waiting for my friend and hungover, I was able to lie on the floor and not feel dirty. For those that think this is a full on customer service joint, with people there swarming you because they work on commission, they should probably just not go. Ever. Keep posting though, your needy desires and demands are cute. IT'S A STORAGE PLACE! It holds stuff that you don't want or won't fit in your humble abode. There's always a few people in the one office that are more than willing, and friendly about helping you. And there must be a janitor of sorts sweeping those floors all day, because they're cleaner than some I've seen in friends apartments, and the air in there is kept at a comfortable dry so your items remain unharmed. I recommend it if you're not looking to be doted on. read more

This place is an absolute joke. The freight elevator was broken for the entire first month we were there, and on two separate occasions the other elevator was out of service, too. I had to carry boxes up and down flights of stairs (while 6 months pregnant) just to get to our storage unit, which was dank and damp. There are no ramps or level floors anywhere, which made pushing the dolly nearly impossible. We thought it would be convenient to rent a unit right next door to our condo building, but we couldn't have been more wrong. And after two months of constant hassles and complaints, we weren't even offered a discounted rate for our troubles! Save your money (and your sanity) and rent a unit somewhere-- anywhere!-- else. read more

I've had great experiences with this storage facility. From the very beginning, the customer service has been top notch. Tim graciously helped me on two occasions when I was moving my stuff in and out of the unit. He couldn't have been nicer. Note: If you decide to store your items here, I would recommend a unit first floor or higher. We had a unit in the basement and it flooded one time. None of my items were damaged, but it's something to keep in mind. After the flood, the Eliza was extremely friendly and considerate about the issue and did her due diligence. I had a ton of questions and she answered all of them. We really liked our experience here. read more

This is the WORST storage facility in the area. Awful customer service, with incompetent staff who do not know what is going on. I paid (so I thought) for pro-rated days as I was only renting for one month plus an additional week. The person I reserved the space with had assured me that the pro-rated days had been covered. I was told to have received a "courtesy call" stating I owed additional money, after I explained to them that the pro-rated days were paid for I was misled and explained that I owed an additional amount of money. The person I spoke with did not tell me that the pro-rated days weren't processed and fast forward two more weeks I get slapped with a late fee on top of the "unpaid" pro-rated amount. I asked them to waive the late fee, to which I was deferred to the DM who says there was nothing he could do. These guys are crooks. Avoid at all costs. read more

I just moved my stuff out after having rented a space here for almost 2 years. Pros: The #1 reason I chose this place was location. It's across the street from my place so I was willing to deal with higher prices for the convenience. Also Takiyah who was almost always the one at the front desk was great. She was always pleasant and helpful. After a few months, I moved to a smaller unit to save money and she was great to work with. Cons: Price! I received a 'free' month when I moved in, but was required to buy their $20 lock and pay and admin fee, so it really wasn't free. Within a few months they raised the rate by $20/month saying it was because it was high demand season with UIC students. That''s when I moved to a smaller unit. Then about 9 months later they raised it again. Like I said, it was so close I was willing to put up with a bit more expense. But just last week I got another rate increase. My 5x5 unit was now going to be $81/mo!!. I checked the website and they were offering the same unit for $48/mo, discounted to $41/mo. When I called to see if I could get that rate, they said I'd have to move out for 7 days. Right, cause that's convenient. They did say they could postpone my rate increase for 6 months. Which just makes me angrier because if I'd known that, I would have called after the first increase. To top it off, the building has some serious drawbacks. The elevators are slow and a pain to work with because they are the old-school freight type with 2 sets of doors to close. And the brick walls 'shed' a lot! All of my stuff ended up totally covered in brick dust. And the outer garage doors were often left open for hours which I'm sure is a security issue. So, the front desk staff is friendly but other that that I'd recommend going with one of the other storage places nearby. If you do go here and they raise your rates call and complain you can probably get them to put off the increase for a while. read more
