When I first put my stuff in my unit 2yrs ago, I had no problem. Quarterly I would check on it. 2yrs years later, we go to take everything out and close the unit out. We see across from my unit the storage door snd floor had roaches outside the door. Also the Storage company should have gave us the customers a courtesy notification that they were repairing/replacing the ceiling. Whoever fixed it broke some of our items and they knocked our stuff up against the door from the inside. It took us 30mins to get in the unit . And then had the nerve to $14 out my account. this is a greedy and unscrupulous company. Their rental fees are classic bait and switch. I started off paying around $70 a month and ended up having to pay over $125 per month after a year without any changes to the space or access to it. For that amount of money, one would think that we could have better access. However, their hours of access are basically office hours. their elevators don't work half the time either. Since it cost too much for the tiny space I was in, I decided to move out. However, when I moved out on 4 June, I was charged for the entire month. Asking for a prorated rental fee for the month was unacceptable to the manager and I was charged for the entire month. They even went so far as to claim that I moved out the day after I did. I have no reason why they would do something so petty, but I do know that I left the space clean and clear, and it was easily rentable for the next tenant. Total scam. TOTAL scam. My unit rate started at $107, 6 months later they raised it to $150. At 11 months they raised it to $190. Seriously, do not rent with them. Their reasoning? Inflation. Then they will tell you that you can call and request financial hardship, but they will deny you. read more

This place is an absolute rip off to rent storage from. What started out as 28 bucks a month quickly jumped up to more. Then more. THE GOOD OL BAIT AND SWITCH TACTIC. The doors are always broken at my facility and that means they leave them wide open all day and night. The first time it was broken it was literally a year before they fixed it. Then of course during that time they changed the hours you were allowed to go to your unit. This last time I went to my unit I ended up rearranging things to make more room and there was 4 brown larvae things under my stuff. There was a dead roach in front of a door down the way a little ways and big nice and fat brown recluse hanging on the wall right by me. As I was leaving there were roaches darting across the floor in front of me. NASTY! The only thing that keeps me here is the fact I can't afford to pay the fees and stuff associated with leasing storage elsewhere. Two days in a row, I visited this location and was completely overwhelmed by the series of events that made my move difficult. Amanda went above and beyond to help me by showing me other spaces because I thought the one I rented was too small..it wasn't, but, she was patient with me and obliged my request. Do you really want a storage unit you can only access until 6 PM weekdays? Public Storage steadily jacks up the price of your unit every 6 months, far out of step with market forces. After I had my 7.5x10" unit on an upper floor for six months, they increased my rent from $79 to $92 (a 16% increase). Six months later, they increased it to $105 (another 18% of the original rate). One-year expected cost for my unit was $948, which is high enough as it is. At this new rate, one-year costs will be $1,260. That's $312 more than I expected to be paying, and 34% above the original rate. What really burns is that, every time I check, this public Storage facility on Ashland (where I rent my unit) has units of the same size listed for $79. I suppose I could transfer into it (while incurring a move-in fee that would initially mitigate my savings), moving my stored stuff from one unit into another one of the exact same size and relative convenience. But that is a pain and Public Storage knows it, and banks on it. Should i really have to undertake such a pointless maneuver just to get the fair price i was paying at the beginning? Every time you enter Public Storage, you type in an access code. I am sure Public Storage checks to see how often you visit your unit, and if a good block of time has gone by, they will raise your rent a great deal because they figure you are out of town and have no choice but to pay what they demand. Theoretically, they could double your rent while you are studying in Germany or deployed in Afghanistan. People needing long - term storage should take that into account carefully. I would even recommend you have a good friend use your code at the storage facilitate periodically, so it is less obvious that you are a helpless target who can be forced to pay for arbitrary increases. A while ago, I complained to the manager about my rising rent, who told me to contact the headquarters. Headquarters told me that the rent is market-rate, and I should contact the manager for more information. Collectively. With both ends of the business telling me to take it up with the other, Public storage blew off my concerns. And no, I do not think the market for storage increased 33% in one year. Chatting with another customer at Public Storage, i learned they use "market rates" to justify increases, but rent only moves in one direction: up, not down. My last straw came a few days ago when I got an email from Public Storage saying the hours in which I can access my unit had been changed. It had been from early morning to night, and was being changed to just 8 AM to 6 PM, starting in just a few weeks. That's a pretty big modification of how the business operates, and it means most people can only visit their units on weekends. I'll be moving out of my unit soon. $1,260 is just too much to pay for storage in a dirty facility that I can't even access when I need to, and I expect that cost to continue to rise, so i may as well cut my losses. I put up fliers in my neighborhood asking if someone has a dry basement or corner of a garage where I can store some things for $50 a month (paid up front, for six months), and got a ton of replies already. I bet if you try that, you will too. Also, the insurance policy that Public Storage makes you buy is garbage. It costs $10 a month and only insures your stored stuff. I got a 1-year renter's policy that covers both my stored stuff AND the stuff in my apartment, up to $40,000, for just $200 for the whole year. My whole family is insured for the stuff in our home - our computers, beds, wardrobes, bikes, etc, ALONG WITH our stored belongings, for a little bit more than what PS tried to sell me which would only cover what is in the storage unit. I recall when I got quotes for my renter's policy, $10,000 in coverage was about $12 a month. Get a renter's policy and say not to Public Storage's awful insurance. read more

Infested with roaches - do not store your belongings here. If you have no other option ask for a unit on the upper levels and put everything in plastic storage bins that close securely. It's gross. There are roaches all over in the basement. When they come out with the lights on you know there's a problem. read more

I was forced to put my things into storage at the last minute, due to an inconsiderate tenant who refused to vacate the apartment I'd rented. I scrambled to find a storage site that was near the neighborhood where I was supposed to move and luckily, I found this Public Storage. I was greeted and helped by Rafael, who took his time showing me multiple units to see which one would be the best fit for all of my belongings. He was patient and curteous the entire time, and was super quick during check out. Upon moving in, Hector was so kind and his playful attitude really helped to brighten my mood. I appreciated his jokes and banter and also his helpfulness in providing extra things I needed to clear out my U-Haul truck. We moved from AZ to IL last year, and used this location to store all our stuff while looking for a house. Right off the bat, Rafael was a breath of fresh air. He took the time to show us all the different units available and answer all our questions. The facility was spotless, safe, and the staff up front were always super friendly. The nicest thing was that Rafael would greet us by name every time we came to the storage unit. He really takes the time to get to know his customers. I've used storage in the past and it can be a cold experience literally and figuratively. However, my experience here was pleasant from the start thanks to one of the managers, Rafael. He provided very good customer service from the start and made moving in and all the paperwork much more enjoyable. Good service is expected when you first sign papers but each time I returned to the unit, he exemplified excellent service. He was helpful and when moving a few items on multiple visits he even helped me with a few of the heavier boxes. If good service and clean units are important to you this is the place. read more

Public Storage forces you to purchase their $18 lock while at the same time, many of their other clients are allowed to bring their own locks from home. Talk about a scam. The employees here are very nice and friendly especially Raphael. We moved to Jersey City for a job and needed to put some of the contents of our 1 bedroom apartment into storage. The ONLY reason I am giving this a bad review is because we moved in November 2011. It is now June of 2013. Our rent for our 10X10 space has risen twice in a year and a half. When we first rented the unit we wanted to pay less than $100 a month in rent for storage. Our unit was $91, then there was a $12 increase to $103, and then a $14 increase to $117. The prices are rising and each time the percentage is more. We might be in Jersey City longer than we thought, so at the rate we're going in a year or two our rent could be $200 or more. You would think that the longer you stay with a company the better they would treat you, but it seems to be the opposite in the storage business. My husband and I are now looking to move to a better storage company or at least take a lot of our stuff out and move the remainder to a much smaller unit within the building. read more
