Hands down Pop Pie is a 5/5! I stopped by to grab a drink at revolution roasters and noticed Pop Pie nearby. I've had their pot pies before but only from friends who have visited. I finally got to go on my own and was pleasantly surprised by the variety of pies. I had the chicken pot pie and my partner ordered the steak and ale one. My chicken pot pie was delicious! The crust was super flaky! I was told that they steak and ale one was super good as well as it had nice pieces of meat, mushroom mixed it with an ale gravy. I've been wanting to come here since they opened. I'm so glad I stopped by today. I didn't get a savory pie today. But I did get some sweets. I got the lemon curd mixed berry pie and an Apple caramel crumble pie. And an oatmeal cookie. The lemon mixed berry pie was really good! The crust was nice and buttery and flaky. Pop Pie just had their grand opening in Carlsbad Cottages, and if you haven't tried them yet, you need to. Their original location is in University Heights, and I've been counting down the days for the Carlsbad location to open since it's much closer to where I reside. This location didn't disappoint! When I'm craving flaky, buttery, savory pies and the best corn and mashed potatoes, Pop Pie is my go-to spot. Everything is incredibly delicious! Not to mention, they have amazing desserts, from cookies to hand pies and potted options. They also offer vegan & vegetarian choices, like the Vegan Curry Pop Pie (which is delicious), as well as vegan desserts. I ordered the Vegetarian Veggie Pie, while my husband tried the Classic Chicken. We both chose Creamed Corn and Mashed Potatoes as our sides. It was amazing!! For dessert, we had a Chocolate Chip Cookie and a Cinnamon Oatmeal Raisin Cookie. My husband thought the Oatmeal Raisin was too heavy on the cinnamon, but I enjoyed it--probably because I love cinnamon, and he doesn't like it as much. I have to say, their chocolate chip cookie is a solid 10/10. The perfect crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and perfectly balanced with butter, chocolate chips, chunky walnuts, and Maldon sea salt. Pop Pie's chocolate chip cookie is generously sized, and when I requested it heated, it was absolutely heavenly. I've also had it not heated in their other location, but who doesn't prefer a warm cookie? Right? The service was also fantastic, and the Carlsbad location has such a charming atmosphere. Hot Tip: Pop Pie's sister ( ice cream ) company, Stella Jean, is right next door! You can grab some incredible ice cream with the best waffle cones ever. They also have cookies at the ice cream shop. I wish I could leave two separate reviews because I have had two different experiences here. Let me start off with the bad. At my latest encounter with this establishment, a few things really rubbed me the wrong way. 1. The person that I heard was the manager absolutely reeked of cigarettes which I think is just not a good look when you are trying to sell food and talk face to face with people. 2. The prices were quite high but that was not too serious for me given the fact that this is the middle of Carlsbad. 3. I ordered the steak and ale pop pie, and from what i've gathered, the general consensus is that this pie is NEVER warm enough to enjoy, and I should have listened to the opinions surrounding that because it was like it was left out for 2 hours on the counter. A 14 dollar room temp meat pie is very disappointing. And 4. the bathroom was absolutely a wreck. Disgusting really. The only enjoyment enjoyment I've had at this establishment was my first time there when i was greeted by a very nice woman, I cannot remember her name but she was an extremely helpful and sweet person to talk to and she had suggested I try a Green Hog and it was definitely a delightful choice to say the least. And she and my wife bonded over their similar sunflower tattoos which was lovely. But unfortunately overall this is establishment definitely has some work to do before I think about coming back, thats for sure. read more

I recently learned about this place and must say I am intrigued! I got the Butter Chicken Pot Pie and oh my! Very unique. I would never think to put something that seems curry based in a Pot Pie. Don't let the name fool you, this is a great spot for all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Breakfast items are served ALL day. The service is great and there's indoor/outdoor seating. This location offers the same delicious sweet and savory treats as the other locations. If you are unfamiliar with the concept, you can buy whole pies, pie by the slice, hand pies, cookies, quiche, drinks (alcohol too), and so much more. I really enjoy the savory pies. They offer meat, vegetarian, and vegan options. The best way to try different pies is to order by the slice. You can order a slice and add a side (kale slaw, creamed corn). First, the good--the 2 girls that manning the business were amazing! I'd hire them in a minute. Positive, great customer relations skills. Place was clean, products were well presented. They remarked that the crusts were made with butter, and that sealed the deal. They looked very good! I chose the classic chicken and the steak and ale for my son. I have to admit that I'm not really a typical customer, I'm a professional chef that used to make Aussie Style pies, so I know what goes into this. These pies are $12.50 each, so there was a level of expectation with that price. The pie's crust was decent, flaky and had a butter flavor, however it was pretty thick and rather overwhelming the ratio of crust to filling. Unfortunately, I found both fillings to be substandard for the price. The chicken one should have been white meat and they used pearl onions, peas, some celery and too many diced carrots that were not cooked enough. I did not care for the flavor of the sauce either. My son had the steak and ale which was more like an overcooked stew as the beef was a shredded mush. Sorry Pop Pie, I really was hoping to fall in love with your pies as they looked so good. If you do a little tweaking to your recipes and do some taste testing, you can easily win me back. read more

Drove down to SD to try Pop Pie with some friends and it was good, but a bit salty. Unfortunately when we got there, there was only the chicken, steak & ale, and aussie pot pies available. The chicken pot pie was your average pot pie, however the chicken was a tad bit dry and was as mentioned salty. Theres three sides that you can add to make it a combo for an extra $3.50, and I would skip the mashed potatoes. It was good, however overly salty compared to the pot pie. Service was good and theres plenty of picnic tables and tables out in front of the store next to a bunch of other stores where you can dine in. read more

Finally got to check this place out. I've been to their SD locations before but having it this much closer is a definite plus. Tried the Australian beef and it was very good, the pie crust was very flaky (how I like it) and the meat was tasty. The bake/heat time was pretty quick as well. I also liked the location. Freaking brilliant. Best strawberry rhubarb pie I've ever had, and I've never been huge on dessert pies. It was perfectly balanced between tart and sweet, and the crumble was such a good addition. Chicken pot pie is also pretty darn delicious and seasoned well. The meat was tender, avoiding the downfall of most chicken pot pies. I wish this was the average standard of food around here. We stopped by after being completely disappointed by Wildland up the street. Pop Pie was a significantly better value and taste with no frills. I love the concept of a pie shop that serves both sweet and savory pies, so I was very excited to try this place for the first time. It came on a Saturday and decided to stock up for the weekend, so I ordered a slice of the egg quiche, a steak and ale pie, a side of creamed corn and an agave/cream cheese hand pie for dessert all for takeout. it was all absolutely delicious. Really great filling to crushed ratio, the crust was crispy and buttery as expected and super flavorful. I was also delightfully surprised by how good their cream corn was, and it paired really well with the steak pie. The size was pretty decent too for the price, as I ended up eating the steak pie for two different meals because it was so big and hearty. The dessert hand pie was VERY tasty too, although it was kind of sugary so I ended up not finishing the whole thing. Overall, great stuff! not a perfect dining experience. gave 'em one more star than they probably deserve. at this location POP PIE is the new kid on the block and still working out the kinks. as you can tell from my photos, everything spent too much time in the oven. rather than tasting smokey and slightly caramelized like a good, thin-crust pizza, everything had a slightly bitter aftertaste. GBD (golden-brown-delicious) is the industry standard and at least on our visit, theirs was closer to the dry and burnt end of the spectrum. MUSHROOM and LEEK QUICHE (roasted oyster mushrooms, leeks, sun-dried tomatoes, eggs, and crème fraiche) was a hit with my meatless kid. not an enthusiastic two-thumbs up but in fairness, Jules would appear taciturn holding a winning lottery ticket. the BOSS 2.0 (applewood smoked bacon quiche with eggs, cheddar, jack cheese, chives, and spiced country potatoes) was a hot mess. picture a Denny's scramble in an overcooked pie crust instead of a small, cast-iron skillet. we also had a whole (5 slices) HAM, BACON, CHIVE, and CHEESE QUICHE (smoked ham, bacon, chives, jack and cheddar cheese, eggs, and crème fraiche). it was really quite good. partial to quiches that are light and fluffy, and POP PIE's are dense, but the flavor was there. 5" CLASSIC CHICKEN pot pie (chicken breast meat, garden vegetables, pearl onions, and creamy herb sauce). easy to see why this one's a "classic." I think Costco's clumsy version is better value and nearly as good. 5" STEAK and ALE pot pie (slow-braised beef, barley, mushrooms, carrots, and dark ale gravy) was not great. I understand and appreciate the impetus for including another classic on the menu (even after omitting the kidneys so it's more approachable for American palates) but there's a reason why British food doesn't top anybody's last meal list. will go back after they've settled in and figured stuff out. they also have a freezer full of take-and-bake pot pies and LOTS of sweet options to try. read more

I was so disappointed in my chicken pie. I ordered it because it clearly said white meat chicken. I can't stomach dark meat chicken, so when I took the first bite it didn't taste right to me. I removed the top crust and it was nothing but dark meat. I brought the pie home to my husband and he asked me why I ordered a dark meat pie, and I told him that the description said White Meat! He looked into the pie and said "I don't see any white meat at all". He didn't want to eat it either. Why would this restaurant describe it as white meat when it was all gross dark meat?
