The pho here is actually pretty decent. Of course if it were in New York or California it wouldn't be anything special, but being in New Haven and also fairly cheap means it has 2 things going for it. I've tried both the beef and chicken pho and would recommend both, although the beef has a little too much fat for my taste. This place replaced Bentara. They kept much of the original decor but it lost a bit of its ambience I think. It bills itself as Vietnamese and Thai but also has Chinese offerings. Didn't get the pho so can't comment on that, but my goodness, best Banh Mi sandwich I have ever had. The baguette was both crispy and fluffy and generously slathered in butter and toasted on the inside. My husband got the regular (ham) and I got the pork--both were absolutely delicious. Topped with lots of fresh cilantro, cucumber, carrot and jicama(?) maybe. Very generously sized sandwich for the price. Service was fine. Took off a star because I was really unimpressed with the "fresh" summer rolls. I got them with chicken, and there was one yarn-thread sized piece of chicken in each roll, along with half a single basil leaf. Probably good for basic Vietnamese but not good for traditional Pad Thai. It's such a basic everyday Thai Dish that I still do not understand how it was messed up so badly. Basically was delivered noodles w dry chicken and no tamarind sauce mixed in with the noodles. Called and lady insisted that it was in there but I had to add a good amount of soy to give it any flavor or even color! Noodles were literally clear! It would have been nice to receive an apology for the disatisfaction but she just continued yelling that i was wrong. Everyone knows that a good Pad Thai has a fantastic Tangy / sweet Tamarind sauce. Just ok. I had a bowl of pho and beef. The broth was very mild, slightly sweet but overall not very flavorful. The salad with chicken and peanut dressing was large and quite good- will probably come here if I'm on the mood for a good Thai salad. read more

Worst food I've had in New Haven. Service was terrible and slow, we were ignored at the table on a very non-busy night, I finally had to ask to just leave a pitcher of water. The pad see ew was terrible, and tasted off and rotten. Gf had the pho soup, also terrible, she stated worst she's ever had. Very Disappointing....Back in late summer my credit card was charged on a day that I was not a patron. Since then I have called them several times and spoken to the manager and/or owner about the situation, left my name with the server, the person who answers the phone, etc. They all say they are going to look into it an call me back. Okay, I have decided to let go of the delivery mishaps. Their Pho bowls (Dac Biet and Tai) are as good as it gets in a place like New Haven.

I got Drunken Noodle, a classic. A friend got green curry. Both were tasty, but not mind-blowing.

I love Vietnamese food and I have been to Vietnam. The pho here is similar to the one I had in Vietnam. Very delicious. I went there during lunch and it's more affordable that way as they have lunch specials. A small bowl of pho is big enough for me! I will definitely go again :) read more

Was originally a fan of this restaurant. However, today when I ordered its signature Dac Biet beef pho, the meat was clearly not beef and closer to pork. This was also reflected in the taste of the broth, because the taste of beef broth is very different from that of a pork. I'm disappointed that the owner decided to cut costs by compromising quality. read more

New Haven has been in need of a high quality pho restaurant and Pho & Spice seems to have filled that void. The decor is very minimal, but it looked very neat and clean and had a modern feel to it. We ordered the crab rangoon as an appetizer and they were absolutely delicious, the outside was nice and crispy while the inside was a delicious mixture or crab and cream cheese. For our entrees, I very much enjoyed the Mi Hoahn Thanh, the yellow noodles are excellent and I thought the broth was very well done. My dining companion ordered the Tai and received a generous serving of beef in a delicious beef broth. My gold standard for pho/ramen is Mecha Noodle in Fairfield and I won't go so far as to say that Pho & Spice is better than Mecha, but it's pretty close. I'm excited to make this a staple of my dining out routine. Something to note is that if there isn't parking available on Orange Street the meters on Center Street do not take cards. read more

Happy to see a restaurant where the old Bentara used be located. I had the noodle Tum Yum Soup. The sweet and sour flavors over powered the taste of the soup. Tum Yum soup the flavors should be balanced so you taste this delicious umami flavor, but not hit you over the head with a sweet and sour flavor. Not the kind of soup where you are drinking every drop of both. The service was fine. The only issue I had was when the waiter came over his cologne was so strong that when he left our table you could still smell it in the air. Later on a different waiter came to serve us food and her perfume was an overwhelming sweet and floral smell. Not pleasant when you are trying to eat and enjoy the smells of the food. Extensive Vietnamese and Thai food menu. I'll try the restaurant again and see if the signature dishes are better than then the soup I had today. read more

I thought it was pretty mediocre. Maybe it's because I was just in Vietnam a few months ago, but I've had Pho in the US at other places since and it was much closer to how you get it over there. I didn't have anything else on the menu so who knows... The flavor of the Pho I got was Chicken and pork dumpling, the broth was fairly bland and they didn't put enough greens in it or on the side. Pho should have a heaping plate of greens on the side to thrown in the bowl - here hardly any. The noodles were good texture at least. read more

The place is easy to find, and it looks pretty decent from the outside. When you enter, you will find that the inside is so spacious that can accommodate over 60 people. The waiters there are welcome and they will walk to you when you go there. The food is tasty and of large portion. Came here craving Pho. The food came and it was delicious but then I notice something while I am eating. Floating in my soul are a couple of bugs.....how disgusting. it was mainly thai ... the only vietnamese was pho ... the egg rolls were doughy, the satay chicken was not grilled, and the gyoza didn't have much flavor ... the isaaan sausage was the only good item ... they brought us one wrong dish but were happy to change it but that extended the time ... they were out of moo ping but didn't tell us until after one dish had been delivered ... ordered sticky rice (which the waitress said they had) & they brought regular rice and then told us they were out of sticky rice ... would not go back ... although the waitress was very kind read more

I haven been here twice so far. Once for dining in and once for takeout. I had the chicken pho the first time and that was very good (portion sizes are very generous of pho). I also tried the pineapple fried rice with chicken and that was DELICIOUS!! Highly recommend that rice. I had the Tom Yum Pho.. It was honestly the worst thing I have ever eaten. It tasted like what throw up tastes like. I don't know if this is because I'm not overly familiar with Thai food or because I just had a bad dish but I could only handle about two bites. I'm giving three stars though because my boyfriend had Drunken Noodles that I ate a lot of and they were yummy. We also had fried egg rolls to start that were very very good so I would recommend anything but what I had, it was unpleasant. read more

I like this place! As a native Southern Californian, I have eaten my fair share of pho and this place is fairly close to what I am used to. I went with three others, and three of us (me included) got a large Pho Dac Biet, while the fourth got a curry pho. Some thoughts: Food 4.5/5 - Boy am I glad I found some legit pho in New Haven. Enough said. The pho is made well, the soup base is solid, noodles are solid, and everything was in order. The bean sprouts / basil tray could have had more stuff (for lack of a better term), but I am happy with the taste! It is more pricey ($9.95 for a medium, $10.95 for a large) than I am used to, but the price is on par with similar dishes in the New England area. Ambience / Decor 4.5/5 - Fairly simple, nice lighting from the windows. Could be a little dimmer further in. This place is spacious! Not sure if they ever fill up with customers. Location 2/5 - Not too far from my apartment, but the surrounding neighborhood makes me not want to come to this place any later than 4 o'clock or so. That said, if they moved to a location closer to Yale campus, this restaurant would start making a killing. Misc. (Menu) - Perhaps too many things on their menu or at least the menu could be better organized, in my opinion. People go to a Pho restaurant to get pho. While it is important to serve other dishes, appetizers, entrees, drinks, etc., the location of pho on the menu was not ideal. Service 4/5 - Acceptable service. A tad bit slow, but they were not as terrible as other reviewers make them out to be. To be fair, they were only serving five or so parties while we were there. All in all, a four out of five! Portion sizes are great here, I've been a few times and always have leftovers. I've tried the Red Curry, Massaman Curry, Spicy Ramen, and Tom Yum. I went here on a Saturday afternoon after an appointment. Pho & Spice was recommended to me since I am a huge foodie and love to try all different cuisines. I ordered Tom Yum Fried rice which is the most authentic Thai fried rice per their menu. This had a very odd fish taste and odor, but there wasn't any fish in the dish at all. I also ordered Miso Ramen without the nori seaweed and no peanuts. The broth was good but there was a aroma that smelled like dirty socks. I did order a mango bubble tea that was pretty good but not as good as others I've tried in the area. I won't be back plus our server left in the middle of her shift and we had someone else. I wouldn't mind if she had to go home or a lunch break a warning would of been nice. So we weren't left with someone else; but they are all very nice and welcoming in there. Lovely service, the people in there couldn't have been nicer. Order wings, scallion pancake and papaya salad for appetizer. Big portions and very tasty. For entree we had pad Thai and tai pho. Both very flavorful, huge portion and worth trying. My one complaint was that I wish the sliced beef came raw and could be added at the table to keep from getting too tough. Ordered Mi Hoanh Thanh: Pork and shrimp dumpling and yellow noodle with sliced pork sprinkled with scallion and cilantro, got bland broth, 3 slices of pork and 2 nondescript dumplings and the Three Musketeer: shrimp, chicken and beef stir-fried with assorted vegetable in chefs special sauce, 14.95 rice not included! The portion size was incredibly small and mostly veg with 2 shrimp and VERY LITTLE meat... add a couple Sapparo's our total came to about $50. All we could do was laugh.... it was that bad. I was excited to try Pho & Spice especially since New Haven doesn't have any Vietnamese restaurants. I like that they're located in the lovely former Bentara space. We ordered the crispy spring rolls, crispy salmon rolls, and the pork and shrimp dumpling pho. The food was tasty and he pho broth was flavorful. The service was speedy and efficient. However, I felt like my cousin and I were being rushed out (oh how I hate that). Before I was done enjoying my pho the server removed the plate of herbs and bean sprouts for the pho. Excuse me? Then the server brought the check and never asked us if we wanted anything else or perhaps dessert. When the server came back I asked him if the restaurant offered dessert. He said "no dessert." Then I told him we weren't ready to leave yet. I asked him for hot water for my cup of tea. Then a few minutes later another server came and took the check but we hadn't put our payment in it yet. She brought it back and opened on the table it as if to say pay now and GO. The irony is that the restaurant wasn't even half filled and me and my cousin just wanted to enjoy our conversation. I would have loved to rate this high but Pho & Spice you need to work on your customer service skills. Please don't rush people out the door. read more
