I very much enjoy and appreciate Main Garden. I live very relatively close and it is a convenient place to pick up dinner at a good price when I want something warm, but don't wan't to cook. It is relatively easy to be frugal and not eat anything that is too, too bad for your weight. For instance, some times I will get a small hot & sour soup or wonton soup and an egg roll. It is less than $7 and really plenty of food for one person. The wonton soup comes with many wontons, which are basically like an order of dumplings. The hot & sour soups come with a lot of tofu, mushrooms, & sprouts and has a nice, bearable spicy flavor. I also sometimes special order broccoli with brown sauce. It is not on the menu. The menu offers broccoli w/ garlic sauce, but garlic sauce is a bit sweeter than brown sauce and I don't like it. Brown sauce is what is used in chicken & broccoli, so I basically get chicken & broccoli without chicken, which saves money, but is perfectly satisfying. It comes with rice and is under $7. They also of course have the regular items and combo meals that come in at under $13, a fair price these days. I have tried the kung pao chicken, which comes with thin sliced chicken (the same style as chicken&brocc), chopped carrot and celery, and peanuts in a spicy sauce. Very good. And so, that is my review. It is not good to eat too much Chinese food, as it can be quite unhealthy. But it is good for something inexpensive and hot and delicious. The people who work and run this restaurant are also nice and they work hard. Best thing I forgot to mention....It is very quick. I just had great shrimp with garlic sauce. It was spicy the right amount, and not overly sweet the way it often is at bad takeout places. It was perfect aromatic garlic sauce like in NYC Chinatown. There was lots of broccoli, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, and green peppers. The pork fried rice had lots of yummy roast pork. The shrimp were big and meaty! This was really good Chinese food made right. This is the first review: Well the food was not that good... and I felt even more disgusted after reading some of the reviews here... I hope my review will not add some more bad feelings to coming customers... I ordered a dish with shrimp but the shrimp was clearly not cleaned thoroughly. The black line on the shrimp back was not taken away and it looked really disgusting... I am giving it three stars instead of two, simply because the cashier was nice and the food was served quickly. My fiance and I have ordered from this place a few times since we moved to the area. The food is always hot and yummy, but every single time I've eaten here I've been left with a terrible stomach ache and a strange feeling in my throat. TURNS out as I learned today they use peanut oil to fry their fried goods. Even though being called twice to ask about peanut allergies and also making sure to leaves notes about it on orders. Someone either seriously messed up today or we had been lied to in the past. A messed up order is one thing, messing with someone's well being is a whole different ballgame. Main garden was our college late-night Chinese take-out fix. So glad that it's still there after over 25 years! We ordered 4 large orders to feed 7 of us perfectly - the portions are huge: wonton soup, boneless spare rjbs, shrimp with lobster sauce and yang chow fried rice. Okay... I'm surprised that I like this place too. I grew up in L.A. eating delicious authentic Chinese food, and Main Garden is far from authentic. However, during my time in college I've eaten Main Garden food probably 30+ times, and the main (heh) reasons for that are (1) fried boneless chicken with garlic sauce, which is a surprisingly close rendition of the chicken katsu at your favorite Japanese katsu place, and (2) reliability and price. The people who run this place work hard to churn out pretty tasty food at late hours every day of the week, at seriously cheap prices. For $6-10 you get a huge pile of some sort of fried meat covered in sauce, vegetables, and rice. I'm always satisfied with that deal. read more

Great parts about Main Garden: 1) I can call to place my order as I'm leaving my apartment, and it will reliably be ready when I arrive 10 minutes later. 2) The General Tso's chicken combo platter has a pleasing ratio of chicken to fried rice (much more chicken than the typical takeout place), all for just $9! 3) The platter comes in a reusable plastic container that I've had great success washing (in the dishwasher!) and using to store food. Do not be fooled by the typo-ridden negative reviews. I've ordered the General Tso's chicken combo platter 20+ times, and it's consistently impressed. read more

I remember when I went to college my friends and I used to joke about how awesome it would be to have a Chinese food place down the block. Well, my secret deep dark Chinese food fetish came true. And I ate (and eat) food from that place like it was (and is) going out of style. Although all Chinese fast food places make similar dishes, here are the ones to get here that are particularly tasty: 1. Fried Chicken Wings 2. Fong Wan Gai It's like chicken wrapped inside pork inside fried dough inside chicken inside pork like a Russian nesting doll. 3. Chicken with Black Bean Sauce 4. And... their french fries: They basically make their french fries like belgian frites. I think they secretly have access to the fryers that used to be at Rudy's because they own the building that Rudy's used to be in. These aren't your average crinkle fries... they are MAD GOOD. So, go get yourself some of their french fries because they are so good it is dumb and you wouldn't think that about a Chinese food place, but there it is. read more

Not only was their food better than every other place that delivered to Albertus, but they delivered in a blizzard when nobody else would! Not even Domino's. Now that I live down the street and haven't eaten Chinese food (other than the Iron Chef) in years, I don't get much delivery. Every once in while you eat food that does not deserve a second chance and, sadly, that's what Main Garden serves. They are open late, and the folks taking our phone order were nice, and thorough, the delivery was fast, but the food was awful in every way - chow fun, wonton soup, beef with vegetables. Bland when it should have had flavor, chewy when it should have been toothsome, toothsome when it should have had texture, sweet when it should have had bite, not in the least spicy, and so on. Good if you're on a diet, I guess. I ate some soup, tasted the rest and then thought to myself, why bother? The leftovers sat in our fridge for days. And that's a pretty rare occurrence. If you have, did you ever wonder what a person could eat that would be so persistently horrible that it would make a parasitic organism explosively leap from their chest? an odd question i know, but bear with me on this. If you have and you have, then i present to you Main Garden. Their ability to screw up even to most common Americanized "Chinese" dishes is staggering, and a monument to the horrible things people will consume when inebriated. Virtually every dish comes steeped in enough oil, that I question if this restaurant is actually a subsidy of BP. Additionally it's worth noting that all of that putrid grease does induce a similar side effect to Orlistat, which i guess is an additional surprise you get with every order. So yeah don't eat at Main garden, ever. there's better palces in N.H. (cough.. Blessingstogo..cough cough...), Though for a bit of viewing fun, you can venture out there late on a Sunday night (say around 11.30) and watch the cookstaff drain five gallon buckets of oil into the nearby gutter. read more

Its a good location, but I've found their general tsos chicken batter to be a bit too egg-y for my taste.

I ordered from here two days again & first of all the food took hours to get here , & when it finally did the delivery guy was no where near where I was & he didn't speak English. I have no problem with him speaking another language but he should know some English since he's delivering food & doesn't know the way. I don't know what people are expecting from a fast food chinese place. Main Garden is exactly that--a fast food chinese place. I've only ever ordered delivery from here so I can't speak for the in-store customer service, but delivery has always sat well with me. The portions are great and decently priced. The food's always come decently hot and greasy. I've never found anything to be under or over seasoned. I would definitely recommend any of the lo mein (their added shredded cabbage and bamboo shoots were a pleasant surprise), definitely the fries, crab rangoon (really nice crispiness and more cream cheese than crab), and their fried rice is dark as it should be unlike ivy noodle's =X. read more

On a long and convoluted journey across America (and parts of Canada and Mexico), I spent two nights partying in the vicinity of the Hallowed Halls of Ivy that are Yale University. The morning after the second of these nights, I was in need of some cheap, greasy hangover food. Then I stumbled upon this place, a block from my friend's house. At first glance I thought it was called "Ming Garden." My Broca's Area, being the intrepid Sherlock Holmes that it is, saw the Asian-style lettering, the word "garden," and a word beginning with the letter M, and assumed it must have been Ming Garden. But no, it's "Main Garden." Why, I have no idea. Maybe they wanted to break stereotypes. Maybe they want to distance themselves from the Ming Dynasty, in protest of their canal building policies over a thousand years ago. Or maybe one of their ancestors couldn't pass the civil service exam and the family has borne a grudge for a millennium. I noticed that there were especially cheap lunch specials, and the cheap fat kid inside of me jumped at the chance to get pork chow mein for four bucks. I ordered "the pork chow mein lunch special, please." The lady at the counter yelled something in Mandarin back towards the kitchen. I then heard a small child crying and two adults arguing. This continued while the child's crying got louder and louder. I was handed my Styrofoam box of Chinese "food" and happily walked out. But when I opened the box at my friend's house, there was no chow mein inside. Instead, it was dry fried rice with cubes of chewy pork mixed in, and a side of what looked like iceberg lettuce sauteed in something trying to be hoysin sauce. I tried to finish it. I really tried. I don't know what people are talking about on here. I ordered from here for the first time the other night and my boyfriend and I were blown away by how clean the chicken was. It was very white, fresh chicken. We ordered chicken and broccoli combination. Other Chinese places, fast delivery Chinese places, have like greasy brown chicken for their chicken and broccoli. The broccoli as well was very fresh tasting, tasted like yummy steamed broccoli. Our favorite though was the crab Rangoon. I've ordered Rangoons from every Chinese place I've been to and these were by FAR the best ones I've ever tried. Main Garden has the best fried chicken I have ever tasted in my entire life. I dream about their fried chicken. It isn't fancy. Just a 1/2 fried chicken - you can get it with rice or with fries (Proper English style chips, not those pathetic McDonalds style things). But I could start a religion about that chicken, and now that I don't live in New Haven, I am so sad that I can't find any chicken anywhere near as good. The Singapore Mai Fun is good too. As the other people had posted: don't expect gourmet at rock-bottom prices. But it's the tastiest cheap fake-Chinese food anywhere in New Haven for sure. read more
