We walked past this spot and because we were both craving dumplings (he soup dumplings/ I - fried) we decided to come in. When you enter there are two ipads - one to look at the menu and another one to order "to go." We browsed the dishes, placed an order and sat down. The one uncomfortable thing was that everyone waiting for their "to go" orders were cramped in the front of the restaurant. Other than that the seating area was pretty empty. Nice Day Chinese has some big shoes to fill by taking up where Ivy Wok left off and sad to say, they aren't even coming close to being comparable. My friend and I stopped by on a Friday evening, with the intention to dine in. However, as soon as we walked in, I immediately got a headache from how bright the lights were in there. I asked the cashier if they dimmed the lights and she said they do but not till after 9pm. We decided to take our food to go instead. I ordered the scallion pancakes, broccoli with brown sauce and rice. They didn't have brown rice (please add that to the menu) so I opted for white (didn't eat it though). When my food was ready, I checked it prior to leaving to ensure it was correct and I immediately noticed how soggy the broccoli was. I asked for it to be made over because it needed to be crunchy. It was made over but still the same result. It was then the chef told me that the broccoli is parboiled and then sautéed. There was also barely any brown sauce on it. When I got home, I had a few bites and ended up tossing it out. I probably wouldn't go back but they do stay open late for those in need of a late night bite. read more

The beef was of good quality, and portions were good. The noodles were not overcooked and had a soft chewy texture - green beans: I was very pleasantly surprised by the green beans. The seasoning that they use was very unique and different from the typical garlic stirfry green beans that I usually get at restaurants. They also used some kind of salted/pickled vegetable as seasoning, which I thought really accentuated the flavor and was definitely the highlight of this dish. Overall, I really enjoyed dining at this place. It's a nice spot to go for the ambience and a quick bite. I liked that I didn't feel overly heavy after the meal. The staff were also very nice and friendly, and even came up to us after our meal to ask for feedback since this is their soft opening. It was what I expected, it was good, but when I inquired about the side of relish and mustard that was supposed to accompany it, I was told, "We are out of relish and mustard." Best Chinese food I've had in a very long time. Everything I've had so far has been fresh and seems to be made in house including sauces. Sweet and sour pork, General Tsos chicken are favorites. Having recently eaten takeout a number of times at the West Haven Nice Day family wanted delivery & so as West Haven wasn't offering to our location, we chose the New Haven branch instead. The New Haven location's website for delivery is easy to navigate so we placed an order & waited. We didn't know at the time of ordering from this location's website that the delivery was thru DoorDash until we got the text messages from DoorDash indicating that our "Dasher" was having probs locating our address. This review is a shout out to the Nice staff at Nice Day New Haven for filling our order a second time as DoorDash dropped the ball & delivered to wrong house in a different town. Regarding the New Haven location's food, we evaluated against all the same items we have eaten at the West Haven location & West Haven wins by a nose. Very disappointed. This was our 4th visit - the food is good, but the staff leaves much to be desired. The meals are typically drier than we like - so for the past 3 times we have ordered extra sauce. it was provided on the first visit, not on the second. I inquired today and was told "you don't need it - we put extra in the order" = and yet, we now have 2 dry meals. In addition, the crispy noodles (for which we paid extra) were not included. Stopped in for dinner on a Wednesday night and it was hopping! We ordered dine in through the QR code at the table and our food came out within 15 minutes. The sesame chicken was crispy with the right amount of sauce and not too battered, and the green beans were great as well. The servers were friendly and the portions were great for the price. In comparison to the nearest, typical Chinese takeout place the portions are a little smaller and the prices are a little higher. The selection is much smaller. However, it has the appearance of something more upscale and healthier. And while that matters little to me, it is important if you are with a woman or another type of superficial and opinionated person who is easily convinced by marketing or concerned about how the businesses they frequent reflect on their personal "brand." The upside is, if you order General Tso's or Sesame chicken etc., you get all white meat and better quality chicken. You can get that at House Of Chao, and it's better there, but that's far from down town. The Singapore Mei Fun has nice big shrimp, but no pork and the flavor was not as good as Main Garden; it might be there was not enough curry powder and/or salt. Scallion pancake and Fried Wontons were both good. The Hot & Sour soup is good, though it lacks a spicy kick that I enjoy elsewhere. The Kung Pao Chicken is much different than I'm used to. It was much drier than the typical version which usually has a thicker spicy brown sauce with cornstarch in it. It was good and spicy, but again a little different than I'm used to. It didn't have any celery, which I think is a key part of Kung Pao that gives it crunch and brightness. They do have some dim sum that most Chinese take out spots won't have. So maybe that's a plus for the Chinese students in the area. The kids that work there are all very nice and friendly, which is nice, but at the same time I got used to the rudeness of the waiters at Ivy Wok, who would respect you more if you made them stand there while you rudely browsed the menu. This place is ok and I'm sure it will do well if they install it next to a Chipotle in a high end suburb of Chicago or Houston, but I will continue to order from Main Garden, unless it's Monday when they are closed. read more

Got food to go on 12/23/24 and I was highly disappointed. The meal portion were extremely small. The fried rice had many white parts hardly no sauce on it and I could probably count the pieces of onions and pork in it with one hand. Yet I paid extra for adding pork to the fried rice. It was more like a kids meal. The orange chicken had a bad flavor and I was missing an egg roll the only thing that was good in the meal. So disappointed. I won't buy from here again.
