I used to live in Philadelphia were there was really great Vietnamese food thanks to an immigrant population there. Seventeen years in CT and I still had not found good Vietnamese until we walked into this place. So grateful to have found it. Looking forward to trying the Bahn Mi. I had the Pho. Such a hidden gem! We loved this spot. Food is excellent and certainly several cuts above your typical Vietnamese restaurant you tend to find around the US. The Vietnamese pancake was one of the better ones I've ever had. Hot sauce is homemade and a must try (they also sell it in jars to go!). I overheard that they bake their own baguettes so coming in for lunch for a Bahn Mi is next on our list. Service was top notch. Zero complaints. The waiter was super attentive and extremely friendly. The crispy chicken was a bit on the salty side, atypical Vietnamese dish. The egg noodles had quite a lot of vegetables to my liking and wish there was a bit more noodles. What a fantastic find! Bui just celebrated its first year in Branford after moving here in March. When we arrived, we were told that they could not take our orders for another 45 minutes because there was a long line of takeout orders ahead of us. We took that as a good omen and waited only 20 minutes. We both ordered large portions of the house special pho, which turned out to be the last portions of soup they had for the day. Come early as they do run out! The soup was fragrant, and the rice noodles firmer than usual. The large meatballs and shrimp were nicely prepared. We were offered their house chili made on-site from a family recipe. We liked it so much, we bought a jar to bring home. The spring rolls were not made with rice skins, but the filling was authentically prepared. The proprietor, Steven is Peruvian and is married to the chef's daughter, so he works everyday with his Vietnamese mother-in-law. He said the first time he tasted her cooking, he told her she should open a restaurant. It was something she always wanted to do, but never got to it. Stopped into Bui Vietnamese for a takeout lunch of the pork belly Bahn mi. I phoned in my order ahead of time and it was ready within about 20 minutes. When I walked in, I was warmly greeted by the owner who shared with me that he included some of their homemade chili sauce (on the side) with a recommendation that it pairs very well with the Bahn mi. I arrived back at work ready to enjoy my sandwich. I was immediately hit with the delicious aroma and bright, fresh ingredients. The Bahn mi had a generous amount of flavorful pork belly. Bui is great! The owner is so personable, he goes above and beyond to show you dishes on the menu and will share information if you are not familiar with Vietnamese food. In a shopping plaza in the middle of Branford, it's convenient to get to and unassuming in looks. The restaurant is cozy and seems to almost always be full - expect a wait if you don't make a dinner reservation, and during rush times there may be a slower service or items sold out. I ordered the house special pho with beef and shrimp and it was excellent! Broth was delicious, meat and shrimp were juicy, and fried scallions on top was a fun, new twist. Add their house-made chili sauce! It was the favorite dish of the night by far. I've spent some time in Vietnam, and this rendition of hearty pho is worth the drive to Branford. Others ordered: clay pot pork, crispy chicken, and gluten-free pho. They have a helpful gluten-free menu and the owner is very knowledgeable about dietary restrictions for all dishes. read more

Maybe a little off the beaten path for some but well worth the short detour off of I 95 when in the Connecticut shoreline area. Service efficient & informative. Great natural lightning in the restaurant & comfortable seating round out the experience. They were out of a few items but our alternative selections were well plated & in generous portions for lunch service. Beautiful salads, competently prepared noodles & perfectly cooked shrimp & chicken were the standouts. Ask for red chili paste to enjoy a little more heat. Next time we will try the duck. read more

We split the spring rolls - they brought out both sauces so my non GF friend could enjoy their homemade peanut sauce. We both got a regular pho and were not disappointed (and had plenty of food!) - mine with shrimp beef and vegetables and my friend got the shrimp beef and meatballs. The broth was delicious!!! And they have a homemade chili oil that they also sell ... I'll be back just for that! The owner came around and walked us through some questions we had with the menu during to my allergy. Following up on CT Mag accolades four of us locals decided to give this restaurant a try. With a warm greeting and family like atmosphere we were seated at our reserved table and assisted with the amazing selection of food. We were told to try both types of dumplings as an appetizer and they were the best we have ever had including those from LA. Our main courses were wonderful in appearance and taste. The Crunchy Duck and Chicken and Salmon dishes were exceptional. Enough to satisfy and take some home. Will be back again but will this time bring our own wine or beer as they do not have a liquor license and encourage byob. A culinary family affair worth visiting! read more

May I give it 7 stars!?! It would be easy to miss this shop, as it is nestled in the Bushy Plaza. There is PLENTY of parking, with grassy areas and a few trees. Once inside, the decor is tasteful and warming. The owner is a shining individual, dedicated to his craft! He provided excellent recommendations, corrected an error along with EXCELLENT service! The food was SUPERB! I enjoyed the Vietnamese vegetarian pancake, and pickled radish with the best chili oil I have had in a long time. The flavors of the whole meal were balanced phenomenally! Especially with the chili oil, which I was told it will be bottled and sold so get in line! The only uninspiring item was the boba, however I am picky because I make my own at home. The Homemade Honey Lemonade was refreshing and unique. I look forward to eating here again. Bui was voted best Vietnamese for in CT, and absolutely deserve the award! read more

We tried Bui for the first time last night, ate there. Super fresh and authentic healthy meal! We ordered the spring rolls, fried dumplings, two bowls of pho, and flan for dessert. Almost everything is made in-house. To drink we had a generous glass of red wine and a carafe of hot tea. The gracious owner took our order and served us. First time trying Bui today and it did not disappoint! From calling in the take out order to picking up the order, what a great experience! The owner Steve is so nice, even giving me a sample of a special chili sauce they make, which was fabulous! The grilled shrimp and noodles were delicious, shrimp cooked perfectly and the noodles and veggies were so fresh and light. The summer rolls were AMAZING and the peanut sauce was to die for! As someone who's always on the lookout for delicious Vietnamese food, I finally made it to Bui after hearing so many good things. The pho was my favorite--flavorful and comforting--but the pork clay pot was also a solid choice. We went for lunch and it was perfect. We shared a summer roll with shrimp and the Vietnamese pancake. The summer roll came with a delicious spicy sald and pickled Daikon??. Not sure what it was but it sure was good. Then we split the pancake which came with shrimp and pork and lots of vegetables. The pancake was unique - kind of like Indian Pouri bread - also delicious. Five of us had dinner there last night (3 chef's and Foodie Family) and let me tell you to got to get there and eat! The food was 5 star. the presentation also 5 star and the service provided by Steve was amazing. Steve was a great host, telling us about the food, the restaurant history and his family who with him own and run the restaurant. They make their own sauces that are all delish and will be bottling them for retail soon. We had a nice assortment of dishes and there wasn't a loser among them. Visited on Saturday and had the most delicious beef pho! The fried spring rolls and fried dumplings tasted like heaven.
