Tried this place on a whim after seeing the 4.4 stars on Yelp, and once again, my fellow reviewers did not steer me wrong. This spot absolutely did not disappoint. The ramen was fantastic, but honestly, the service was even better. Everything came out super quickly, the restaurant was spotless, and the staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. I ordered the shrimp tempura ramen and it was SO good. The shrimp tempura stayed crispy, the broth was flavorful, and the portion was generous. We also got the edamame, which tasted really fresh with the perfect crisp bite to it. I wasn't sure if I wanted to fully commit to the spicy garlic sauce, so I asked for it on the side... and immediately fell in love with it. We ended up dipping EVERYTHING in it, including the dumplings, which were absolutely delicious. My friend ordered a boba tea without the boba and really enjoyed it. They also got a sushi roll, and I tried some of the California roll myself. Sometimes all you want is a nice, fresh piece of sushi, and this definitely delivered. Also, points for serving the Diet Coke in a bottle. Nothing is worse than an inconsistent fountain! If we're ever back in the New Haven/Hamden area, this will absolutely be our go-to ramen spot. I'm glad I revisited Roishi, having only dined there once during the first few weeks of their grand opening. At the time, I found the ramen competent and the interior pristine, spacious, and modern. Returning for a second visit, I'm happy to report they have withstood the test of time, maintaining high standards for both food quality and cleanliness. To provide context: when Roishi first opened, it felt like ramen shops were everywhere. Fast-forward a few years, fewer shops remain, and unfortunately, many of those survivors just don't stand out to me. The mid-range sushi scene has proven equally unimpressive. Aside from high-end establishments like Hachiroku Handroll Bar, or the outstanding Gohan in Southington, most mid-range joints disappoint with mediocre quality and a lack of creativity. Many may start off strong in quality, like Niu Sushi in East Haven or Sayori in Orange, but eventually their standards slip over time. In the current food scene in Connecticut, finding a restaurant that excels at both ramen and sushi is a rarity. While I enjoy the Spicy Miso at Akatsuki in Hamden, their sushi remains lackluster. Conversely, from what I recall when they initially opened, the sushi at Takumi in Branford impressed me, but their ramen has disappointed. This is where Roishi shines. Perhaps my previous disappointments at other establishments have made me quick to judge, or maybe I simply caught Roishi on an exceptionally good day. Regardless, our last experience at Roishi has won me over, and it has officially become (for now) my go-to for a satisfying bowl of ramen paired with fresh, creative sushi rolls. It is clear the sushi chefs put effort into curating their menu and making their rolls look visually appealing. Our server was pleasant, professional and attentive without being overbearing. While the menu would benefit from rotating specials featuring higher grade ingredients, the restaurant's ability to maintain standards and consistency is a rarity, and is the primary reason I will continue to return as long as they continue to do so! read more

The service and the ambiance at Roishi were great! We arrived there pretty late in the night with about 40 mins left before they closed. We got our order pretty quickly after we placed it. We finished our meal and were out on the road to resume our roadtrip in no more than 30 mins. We got the chicken fried rice and the shoyu ramen. Usually, fried rice can be meh, but their fried rice was quite good. I liked the raw chopped red onions in their fried rice. It was salty, savory and had a burst of umami. The rice had the right texture and the shreds of chicken were cooked and seasoned well. Their ramen was amazing too. The broth was deep, thick, and hit you with umami. It wasn't overtly salty. I liked the bamboo shoots and the chasu as well. The chasu fat melted in your mouth and the meat was tender. The noodles were al dente and had that good snap to it. Lovely vibe, rough ramen night Okay, full disclosure: we had just come back from a San Francisco trip where we were slurping some of the best ramen in the country... so yes, maybe I walked into Roishi as an unfairly spoiled critic. Connecticut's ramen scene isn't exactly booming, and I really did want to root for this place. And to be fair, the ambiance is great. Lots of window booths (my personal weakness), not pretentious but still cute and comfortable. We wandered in late and had zero trouble getting a table. Bonus points for the background K-pop music videos, which I could happily watch all night. But the ramen... oof. We each got a different ramen and both were extremely salty--like, "I need to drink an entire water tower" salty--and somehow still not very flavorful otherwise. It wasn't inedible, but it also wasn't something I'd go back for. I almost wish I could say "maybe we ordered the wrong thing," but ramen is the thing, so it's hard to ignore. All that said: the staff was kind, the space is inviting, and maybe on a different night (or with less SF ramen snobbery on my palate) I'd have a better experience. Went here since we were staying at the hotel across the street. Ordered a lot of food! Portion sizes were kinda small, but each dish was relatively inexpensive. For starters, we ordered the spicy garlic edamame, scallion pancake, Taiwanese popcorn chicken, and sexy salmon roll. All were very flavorful, with my favorite being the Taiwanese popcorn chicken. We also got the avocado salmon roll, cucumber eel roll, and California roll. All of them were fresh and flavorful. There were 8 slices per roll. The chicken fried rice was also good. I got a lychee tea with lychee jelly (each drink comes with one free topping). It was pretty large with a good sweet lychee flavor. The restaurant was empty when we went since it was 2pm. I chose Roishi for a lunch date. It was actually a first date with someone I met on Hinge. I live in Vermont, but drive down to Branford, CT regularly to see my parents. I am always looking for new spots to try in the New Haven area, particularly Asian/Japanese/sushi. I don't eat beef, pork or poultry. I do eat pretty much all the creatures of the sea and Asian cuisines are perfect for that. Vermont is, honestly, a restaurant desert. We have few choices and most are not great. So I am always excited to try a new place when I'm in CT. Hamden really has quite a few places to eat and Asian restaurants are well represented. I was specifically looking for a place with good food and good vibes. As in a nice, comfortable interior where you could potentially get to know someone over a meal. I checked out all the photos of Roishi online and I read through their menu. The interior looked nice, with booths and a bar with TVs behind. Nice, chill vibe and there were plenty of options for me on the menu. Roishi has a full Ramen menu (which definitely was not for me on a first date...slurping my way through a huge bowl of soup! LOL) and all sorts of Bubble Tea. For those who are into Boba. I don't think Roishi is a chain. But the building is SO NICE I felt like maybe it took chain money to build it (LOL). It is a very new seeming, stand alone, building that is pretty much entirely glass on two sides. So you can sit in a booth right in the window. Which we did. The booths are very comfortable and there is a ton of natural light from the window. I thought it was a perfect spot for a first date: comfortable, nice, chill. I was wanting to have some sake with my lunch and checked online to make sure they served it. They do, but they have a super limited selection. So I got one of those sort of single serving, pop top glass bottles. It was fine. Nothing great. But drinkable! We shared a series of rolls. I ordered one or two at a time so we could talk and eat and go at our own pace. The date was going GREAT, so this approach allowed us to be there for hours and to be eating something the whole time. If your date is not going great you can just order your rolls, eat them and get out! Which is another reason why Roishi is the perfect choice for a first date. We started out with the Baja Roll: Tuna, yellowtail, jalapeño, cilantro and tobiko inside with guacamole and crispy spring sheet with cilantro emulsion . It sounded good and it was good! The guacamole is definitely just pre mashed avocado they buy (i.e., not freshly made), but ingredients were good otherwise and the roll was well made and tasty. Then I ordered the Roishi Roll (white tuna, yellow tail, avocado, tobiko inside green soy wrap, tuna, salmon and spicy mayo outside) and the Whitney Avenue Roll (tuna, salmon, spicy mayo, with no crunch. I do not like the crunch bits that are added to everything and it fills me up too quickly so I can't eat as much. Plus, who amongst us needs to be eating MORE fried things?? Date was still going really well, so I ordered their vegetable roll, the salmon avocado roll and the spicy salmon roll with no crunch. Everything was really good. Super solid rolls. Well made/constructed. Properly sized and cut. I bet the ramen is really good... Strongly recommend. read more

Roishi is one of Hamden's best spots for Japanese food. Their dishes are consistently high quality and delicious. This time I got vegan food for myself; the calamari was for a family member. I don't know how they do it, but the broth in their veggie ramen is so creamy and savory. Noodles have good chew and flavor, all the toppings are delicious as well. The gyoza are about what you'd expect, but they're quite good. I usually don't like oshinko (a type of Japanese pickle) but it's delicious in the vegetable roll. The sweet potato roll was also very good, plenty of sweet sauce on top without it being too much. The edamame were fresh and healthy. I didn't try the calamari, but my family member said they were crispy and delicious and the dipping sauce was very nice as well. We've been going to Roishi ever since it opened and we haven't been disappointed once. You won't be either. read more

Well Yelpers, you led me astray. This restaurant is stylish and comfortable looking. There is a screen to the right where you can place and pay for your takeout order,which I did. Clear and easy to navigate, but it prompts for a tip. I do usually tip the counter staff but I don't like the implication that I have to. Moving on,I waited less than 15 minutes for my food and we dug in as soon as I got home. The Shrimp Tempura rolls were good, I prefer the seaweed on the outside to hold the roll together but this was fine and they were generous with the ginger and wasabi which my sinuses did not appreciate but it tasted good. I'm still sneezing. We enjoyed the meat goysa and the sweet soy sauce that came with them. The Japanese Spring rolls were a great disappointment, which wasn't a surprise, I've had Vietnamese, Cambodian and Japanese versions that were thin flakey and full of cellophane noodles and veggies, these were cabbage, carrots and a thick wrapper compared to the ones I've had elsewhere, and served with that generic fruity sauce that came with the Crab Rangoon. I am a new convert to scallion pancakes, thin, crispy golden brown delights; sadly, not here. I got one small pancake that was thick, limp, doughy and burnt so in the trash it went. Our final choice was Crab Rangoon, sadly generic. I'm sure there was some shredded "crab" in there but we couldn't taste it.
