5 stars for food. Some of the best in the area, particularly the General Tso's Chicken and the Beef Drunken Noodle. This being said the home delivery experience is less than desirable. You are not only paying a delivery fee of $4.49, but you are tipping your driver at least $5.00 and that can amount to $10 total in fees for each order. This is excessive. In addition, you do not know in advance which service is providing your delivery. Is it Uber Eats? Is it Door Dash? You do not know until you have paid for your order. On my most recent order a few days ago I had someone deliver my order on a bicycle and made a stop before arriving at my home. Having had Thai from many many places in CT we were looking forward to trying Basil. We got takeout and here's how it went: 1. Pad Thai: 4/10. Very little flavor and very sweet. The noodles were almost completely white as was the chicken, when both should be golden from sauce and frying. 2. Massaman Curry: 8/10. Excellent flavor and variety of veggies in the curry (versus the typical carrots and onions only). I wish the curry was less watery to better coat the veggies. 3. Drunken Noodle: 6/10. Again not much flavor, and on the sweet side. A good amount of spice and a lovely golden brown. Overall: lacks flavor and quite sweet. There is certainly better Thai in New Haven. read more

This is by far my favorite take out spot and I'm surprised I've never left them a review! I have been a steady customer here for almost 10 years! My go to is the chicken curry soup with rice noodles whenever I'm feeling under the weather and want a yummy comfort food that makes me feel so much better! We also love getting the usual suspects: General Tso's Chicken and Drunken Noodles. My favorite appetizer dishes are the Pork Buns and the Hot Sesame Wontons. I also love their milk tea boba that not many people know they offer! I've never actually dined inside of the restaurant, but I know that if the takeout is as good as it is, it can only get better upon dining in. The food isn't honestly that good but I keep coming back for some reason. It's decently priced and will satisfy a craving for noodles. The lo me in and the drunken noodles are my favorite. I have come here so many times. Their dumplings are okay but you must try the roti canai. It's so buttery and amazing. Ive also tried many of the bobas and the coffee one is def the best. So near Yale, this is the kind of place that thrives by college campuses. Cheap Thai food with a spartan interior, it serves up the kind of Thai food you'd expect. Not bad but not great either. Started with dumplings that had a bit too much dough for my taste. But it was fresh and still packed a good salty feel to them. The drunken noodles were a bit of a disappointment. They were bland and lacking lots of chicken. Just didn't pan out for me. But others were clearly enjoying the meal and the regulars in this place knew what they were getting. I was here last night and was recommended to try their beef drunken noodles, but I was skeptical given the restaurant is not Thai and I am a huge drunken noodle queen/snob. However, I had not had drunken noodle in forever so I decided to try it out and oh boy, I was pleasantly surprised! The dish was not too spicy, but that's ok b/c I added more sate chili sauce on the plate. Their version was less saucy, but the flavors were on point. I'm staying at the hotel right around the corner so Basil is super convenient for pickup. Some of my traveling companions had the more Chinese takeout style dishes like the general tsos and chicken teriyaki one afternoon and said it was just alright. Nothing special at all. I figured they have so many other delicious sounding options that aren't your typical takeout fare and the reviews are so good that I should try the place out for myself. Firstly they say 10 minutes for pickup when it's no where near 10 minutes. It's more like 30 which is fine because the place is busy and there seems to be not many people in the kitchen, maybe even just 1 guy. But I rather be told 20-30 minutes rather than 10, why say 10 when you know it'll be longer. This happened both times we ordered from here and I hear her telling everyone on the phone "10 minutes". It's just not necessary. I ordered the Indonesian Fried Rice and it was basically inedible. This was because the chicken included was so old and stale and had that horrible rancid meat taste which permeated the rice. At first I was so confused by the flavor and smell and then I had a piece of chicken. The flavor of the rice was very bland and Indonesian fried rice is supposed to be way more flavorful than other counterparts. The classic taste just wasn't there. I will say the shrimp in the rice was great tasting and perfectly cooked. I could've just eaten a dish of that. Unfortunately there were only 2. I also got the Pan Fried Pork Dumplings which were not good! Even worse than the barest bone Chinese takeout places. There was barely any filling at all and the filling itself was bleh. For a drink I got the Thai Iced Tea. It was pretty sweet and the flavor wasn'tsuper authentic but I actually quite liked it compared to everything else. I came here on a weeknight based on the reviews and I would say this is more of a 2.5 star restaurant. It was not crowded at all and I could pick where I sat. While there, I noticed a ton of people getting their to-go orders. The menu was expansive and there was lots to choose from. I ordered the pan fried pork dumplings which were basically potstickers. They were average at best and not as crispy as I would have expected. For my entree, I got the drunken noodles with extra noodles. These were disappointing because the noodles were overcooked and soggy. It was a ton of food, but the sauce was bland. I walked in around 12:30PM on a Sunday afternoon with six others post-church--prime lunchtime. I was pleasantly (but also suspiciously) surprised that only one other person was eating there. Unsurprisingly, the cleanliness and fixtures were not the best, but I'm used to it, so it didn't bother me. Seated immediately, we looked through the extensive menu, our jaws wide open at the cheap cheap prices (and no card minimum!!). After a while, I finally decided to split a green onion pancake with a friend and order a bowl of roast duck wonton soup for myself since it was a slightly chilly day. The green onion pancake was smaller and thicker than expected, a 4/10. Definitely have had much better, but it did the job, I guess? But the soup was so good!! A spoonful of chili oil to complete the palate, and I was left bursting at the seams (unfortunately in high waisted jeans). I'm so glad i didn't try the boba because I definitely would not have finished it. The service was good, and you could tell that the people who work there are extremely hardworking and care about the business. By no means is this like...the BEST thai/chinese/etc. food I've ever had, and I was honestly confused as to which cuisines I was to expect, but I enjoyed my experience. it seems like a go-to place that I would always be down to go to if my friends and I can't decide where to eat. Campus staple. Cheap and efficient eatery. Aka always a solid option. I'm usually not the biggest fan of Asian fusion, but you really can't complain about the food here. As others have noted, the prices are really unbeatable. You can have very filling noodle soups, rice dishes, and a myriad of other fusion options for under $10 (and that's including tip and tax). I've tried everything on the menu, from the dim sum to the bubble tea and all of the entrees in between. Some of my favorites include the house special fish casserole, fish ball noodle soup, and rice with Chinese sausages. You really can't go wrong with most of the choices though (as a personal opinion though, I would shy away from anything with dry noodles). A detail that I appreciate: for all of the noodle soups, you can choose among many different types of noodles. Service is generally very fast and efficient, though the restaurant is super casual so your food kind of comes out in a random order. Eh, just okay. I've had a lot of Thai in my days, and was so ready to dub Basil restaurant my go to takeout place, but my search continues. I ended up ordering the drunken noodles, with extra sauce (given the Yelp reviews saying they needed more sauce) and the hot sesame wontons. When everything arrived, via Uber Eats (which was very quick, might I add) everything was hot and smelled delicious. I started off with some of the "hot sesame wontons". They were good, I wish there was more of the hot sesame portion to dip the actual plain wonton. The hot sesame just sat poured on top of the wontons, but wasn't enough for all your bites. But like I said, those were good and I would order them again. However, the "drunken noodles" were the real disappointment. The sauce was just not what it needed to be. It was sweet and had a terrible aftertaste. My stomach felt uneasy after eating them, and I decided I would not order them again. Couldn't be happier that I found this place. I stumbled upon it willing to give the soup a shot (and at such reasonable prices) as my first meal after suffering mild food poisoning from one of the food trucks on the Yale campus (NOT from Basil). The women who works there is sweet as pie. She's incredibly efficient ensuring people are sat orders taken and sent to the kitchen, all while ordering the phone and getting take-out orders taken care of. On my first visit, I went with the wonton noodle soup and she recommended the noodle type. They also serve Ginger Ale (crucial calories I needed that day!). I couldn't finish the meal but it was a hit with the wontons perfectly wrapped with flavors sealed in, fresh bok choy, and a light broth. The thin angel hair noodles did stick together a bit but that didn't deter me. I went back the following week and she remembered me and asked how I was feeling! I mean, I'm a consultant who is on the road and went to a restaurant for the second time and was remembered?! Made me feel special. My stomach was definitely on the mend by this visit so i began with the hot sesame wontons which were steamed and coated with chili oil and sesame seeds. Solid flavor with a medium amount of heat. Fantastic deal - especially the quantity for the price. I also ordered a shrimp tempura udon soup and a ginger beef with mixed vegetables. I love a proper Japanese udon (true nebayaki style with pork, egg, and everything thrown in the pot). This is not what you will get here. But it will be a pot with hot broth, with fresh vegetables and the shrimp tempura on the side for you to dip as you prefer and perfectly cooked udon noodles. The ginger beef was as expected. I've enjoyed coming here while on the road - for the friendliness, the efficiency, the freshness of the ingredients, the taste, and the very reasonable prices. I loved the flavors of my drunken noodle, and I even felt like I really didn't need any spices for it even though it wasn't super spicy or anything. We also shared the chicken teriyaki buns as an appetizer. My husband didn't love his pad Thai as much as I loved my drunken noodles, but for the price, it can't be beat! Just docking one star for the mediocre service, a bit dusty water glasses that didn't get filled as quickly as I'd like with as much ice as I'd like, and the slower - than - expected food time. I come here fairly often and I have never had a bad experience. It is a small place with about twenty tables. There is usually only one person hosting, waiting tables, and making drinks. But that person gets to everyone really fast. Everything I have ever ordered has been delicious. I have never waited more than ten minutes for my food. It is always hot and fresh. The menu is fairly large ranging from different kinds of stir-fry to curries to noodle soups. I think there are a lot of options and something for everyone. Considering the amount of food you get this place is very cheap, especially for New Haven. I have never spent more than $35 for two people and that includes, apps (always get 2), drinks, and main meals. One of the best cheap Asian eats in New Haven. Came here on the first night after moving to New Haven from Shreveport, and continued to visit Basil often during my one year at Yale. It served me well in satisfying any cravings for Asian food, since I lived fairly close to this restaurant. Food (8.0/10) = The noodle dishes are the way to go -- fish ball noodle soup, curry noodle soup, the Singapore noodles, etc. Best appetizers were the dumplings and the pan-fried radish cakes (the ones you find at really good dim sum places). The menu itself is quite extensive, and not limited to a specific Asian cuisine. You will see some Chinese, Japanese, and Thai dishes on their menu. Ambiance (7.5/10) = clean and spacious. Located next door to Kamal, this Asian fusion restaurant has a casual full service dining room with several tables and they offer takeout service. The menu offerings are reasonably priced. Since I was on the road, I decided on takeout. I ordered the Mango Shrimp with Brown and Chicken Chow Fun Noodles. The food was ready to go in about 15 minutes. The Mango Shrimp dish had a mix of broccoli, mango slices, carrots, red peppers, and a few tender shrimp (with tail & cleaned) in a sweet sauce. The brown rice was nice and firm. The Chicken Chow Fun Noodles had a savory flavor with a mix of sprouts, scallions, onions, tender boneless chicken pieces and soft wide rice noodles.
