Give this place a try, and you won't be disappointed. The chicken is lean, the portions are large, the taste is exceptional. Finally a fried rice done right. This mom and pop restaurant has a vast menu and everything we tried was delicious. I highly recommend, and you can't beat the price for authentic cuisine. read more

Quick, attentive service for both large and small parties. Excellent prices for large portions. Chicken noodle soup is comforting and authentic Cantonese cuisine, just as good as I've had in Hong Kong. Great variety of noodle options, all are well done- I recommend Cantonese egg noodles. Indo Mee is also very tasty and generously portioned. Vegetable sides are fresh, well cooked, and tastefully seasoned: I recommend the Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. Other members of our party also enjoyed stir fry eggplant, duck over rice, bbq pork over rice, soy sauce chicken over rice, and shrimp lo mein. read more

Horrible experience caused by their dishonesty. Pay attention to the bills they charged you. They changed the tip amount placed on my credit card. I had to call the credit card company to fix it. I will avoid it completely in the future. read more

Great food! Chicken was high quality and no fat! We really enjoyed our lunch............::

Good hospitality. Lo mein was very tasty however the beef teriyaki was a bit salty. Quit tucked away restaurant.

Tried this place out with a friend! Prices were extremely reasonable and service was attentive (they noticed how fast both of us kept downing our water cups. thank you) -Shrimp broccoli: 5/5 So tasty! I only wish that it came with more shrimp. Would try the beef broccoli next time and see how big the portion is. My friend said that he liked the Tom Yum Chicken Noodle soup, and he doesn't always like it depending on which restaurant makes it, sooo you should try it too if you like Tom Yum! Restaurant was very spacious with lots of tables. 10/10 would come again! read more

The perfect family run restaurant for authentic Asian cuisine. We were a party of 12 and everything we ordered was tasty - to include pad Thai, wonton and other soups, pad see yew, Thai iced tea, and dumplings. The staff were so nice and everything came out warm and without a long wait. Highly recommended. read more

Some dishes are tasty but I don't like that often U find they use tofu to supplement the meat choice you make and thus you get less meat and tofu. Also chicken sometimes is rubbery. read more

Seated immediately on a Sunday evening. Menu has good options. Server was attentive. Food was not very good though. The texture of the chicken in my yellow curry chicken was very questionable. It was almost rubbery. I took leftovers home but didn't end up eating them. read more

5 stars for food. Some of the best in the area, particularly the General Tso's Chicken and the Beef Drunken Noodle. This being said the home delivery experience is less than desirable. You are not only paying a delivery fee of $4.49, but you are tipping your driver at least $5.00 and that can amount to $10 total in fees for each order. This is excessive. In addition, you do not know in advance which service is providing your delivery. Is it Uber Eats? Is it Door Dash? You do not know until you have paid for your order. On my most recent order a few days ago I had someone deliver my order on a bicycle and made a stop before arriving at my home. This took an excessive amount of time, over a half hour for delivery time once the food was ready, even though I live in the downtown area. read more

A local favorite! The portions are generous and prices are very reasonable for a restaurant these days. I loved their curries as well as the chicken satay. The pad Thai was slightly lacking in flavor. Staff were welcoming and friendly. The Tom yum soup was decent as well, as were the drunken noodles. read more

I stopped in on an early Friday night about a month ago. All of the reviews were right. Inexpensive prices here. Service was relatively fast. Nice hospitable staff. Explained some of the items to me that I didn't know about. Very patient. Disclaimer:It was very COLD in here. Small place. Filed up quickly. Food tasted good. I especially liked the Chinese broccoli. Very tasty. All street parking. No parking lot. Looking forward to coming back soon. read more

I always eat there, pad Thai is good and the Thai tea. I recommend going for lunch or dinner.

Having had Thai from many many places in CT we were looking forward to trying Basil. We got takeout and here's how it went: 1. Pad Thai: 4/10. Very little flavor and very sweet. The noodles were almost completely white as was the chicken, when both should be golden from sauce and frying. 2. Massaman Curry: 8/10. Excellent flavor and variety of veggies in the curry (versus the typical carrots and onions only). I wish the curry was less watery to better coat the veggies. 3. Drunken Noodle: 6/10. Again not much flavor, and on the sweet side. A good amount of spice and a lovely golden brown. Overall: lacks flavor and quite sweet. There is certainly better Thai in New Haven. read more

This is by far my favorite take out spot and I'm surprised I've never left them a review! I have been a steady customer here for almost 10 years! My go to is the chicken curry soup with rice noodles whenever I'm feeling under the weather and want a yummy comfort food that makes me feel so much better! We also love getting the usual suspects: General Tso's Chicken and Drunken Noodles. My favorite appetizer dishes are the Pork Buns and the Hot Sesame Wontons. I also love their milk tea boba that not many people know they offer! I've never actually dined inside of the restaurant, but I know that if the takeout is as good as it is, it can only get better upon dining in. It's right off of the broadway strip, so you need a bite in between shopping, this is the perfect place. If you want something yummy and quick to eat, please give this favorite place of mine a visit read more

Their spring rolls were crispy and tasty and came with a sweet dipping sauce. Soy chicken is awesome! They had a cut up slow cooked soy chicken with bones and skin. The garlic broccoli chicken was awesome. The Vietnamese soup was also great (multiple meals here). Great place. Highly recommend. They even included sauces I asked for and some I didn't including a homemade hot sauce. All great. read more

The food isn't honestly that good but I keep coming back for some reason. It's decently priced and will satisfy a craving for noodles. The lo me in and the drunken noodles are my favorite. I have come here so many times. Their dumplings are okay but you must try the roti canai. It's so buttery and amazing. Ive also tried many of the bobas and the coffee one is def the best. It isn't the best boba but it's pretty good. Basil is just a nice, convenient place to get some good food. read more

So near Yale, this is the kind of place that thrives by college campuses. Cheap Thai food with a spartan interior, it serves up the kind of Thai food you'd expect. Not bad but not great either. Started with dumplings that had a bit too much dough for my taste. But it was fresh and still packed a good salty feel to them. The drunken noodles were a bit of a disappointment. They were bland and lacking lots of chicken. Just didn't pan out for me. But others were clearly enjoying the meal and the regulars in this place knew what they were getting. Average Thai food at cheap prices. read more

I was here last night and was recommended to try their beef drunken noodles, but I was skeptical given the restaurant is not Thai and I am a huge drunken noodle queen/snob. However, I had not had drunken noodle in forever so I decided to try it out and oh boy, I was pleasantly surprised! The dish was not too spicy, but that's ok b/c I added more sate chili sauce on the plate. Their version was less saucy, but the flavors were on point. I have to give 5/5 for both the dish, affordable price, and customer service (we did have a nice waitress refilling our water cups). Yale kids are lucky to have this place on their block! read more

Got delivery this past week. While it was speedy, the food was pretty average. The Malaysian Style Curry Chicken was very bland and didn't look very nice. It was like the curry sauce was kind of slapped on last minute and looked splotchy. Broccoli that came with it had no flavor, either. The Indonesian Bihun Goreng with chicken was a little better, but it would have been nice if there was more veggies and texture in it. There are other Thai places to try. read more

I'm staying at the hotel right around the corner so Basil is super convenient for pickup. Some of my traveling companions had the more Chinese takeout style dishes like the general tsos and chicken teriyaki one afternoon and said it was just alright. Nothing special at all. I figured they have so many other delicious sounding options that aren't your typical takeout fare and the reviews are so good that I should try the place out for myself. Firstly they say 10 minutes for pickup when it's no where near 10 minutes. It's more like 30 which is fine because the place is busy and there seems to be not many people in the kitchen, maybe even just 1 guy. But I rather be told 20-30 minutes rather than 10, why say 10 when you know it'll be longer. This happened both times we ordered from here and I hear her telling everyone on the phone "10 minutes". It's just not necessary. I ordered the Indonesian Fried Rice and it was basically inedible. This was because the chicken included was so old and stale and had that horrible rancid meat taste which permeated the rice. At first I was so confused by the flavor and smell and then I had a piece of chicken. The flavor of the rice was very bland and Indonesian fried rice is supposed to be way more flavorful than other counterparts. The classic taste just wasn't there. I will say the shrimp in the rice was great tasting and perfectly cooked. I could've just eaten a dish of that. Unfortunately there were only 2. I also got the Pan Fried Pork Dumplings which were not good! Even worse than the barest bone Chinese takeout places. There was barely any filling at all and the filling itself was bleh. For a drink I got the Thai Iced Tea. It was pretty sweet and the flavor wasn'tsuper authentic but I actually quite liked it compared to everything else. It was reasonably priced and didn't have an artificial taste in the back like many not freshly brewed Thai iced teas tend to have. read more

I came here on a weeknight based on the reviews and I would say this is more of a 2.5 star restaurant. It was not crowded at all and I could pick where I sat. While there, I noticed a ton of people getting their to-go orders. The menu was expansive and there was lots to choose from. I ordered the pan fried pork dumplings which were basically potstickers. They were average at best and not as crispy as I would have expected. For my entree, I got the drunken noodles with extra noodles. These were disappointing because the noodles were overcooked and soggy. It was a ton of food, but the sauce was bland. It is like they added the extra noodle but did not add any sauce to compensate. read more

Campus staple. Cheap and efficient eatery. Aka always a solid option. I'm usually not the biggest fan of Asian fusion, but you really can't complain about the food here. As others have noted, the prices are really unbeatable. You can have very filling noodle soups, rice dishes, and a myriad of other fusion options for under $10 (and that's including tip and tax). I've tried everything on the menu, from the dim sum to the bubble tea and all of the entrees in between. Some of my favorites include the house special fish casserole, fish ball noodle soup, and rice with Chinese sausages. You really can't go wrong with most of the choices though (as a personal opinion though, I would shy away from anything with dry noodles). A detail that I appreciate: for all of the noodle soups, you can choose among many different types of noodles. Service is generally very fast and efficient, though the restaurant is super casual so your food kind of comes out in a random order. It's also a family-owned restaurant, so don't be surprised to see kids in the back. Everything is kept very clean and organized. It's a great place for a casual bite. Basil is the homie!! Always there for you. Helpful in a pinch. Never lets you down. Bet you wish you had friends like that. Basil is the tried and true, fills the craving, quick and reliable kind of place. Ok listen up, folx !! If you're looking for a cheap, no thrills place to fulfill your asian food craving, this is the place to go!! I walked in around 12:30PM on a Sunday afternoon with six others post-church--prime lunchtime. I was pleasantly (but also suspiciously) surprised that only one other person was eating there. Unsurprisingly, the cleanliness and fixtures were not the best, but I'm used to it, so it didn't bother me. Seated immediately, we looked through the extensive menu, our jaws wide open at the cheap cheap prices (and no card minimum!!). After a while, I finally decided to split a green onion pancake with a friend and order a bowl of roast duck wonton soup for myself since it was a slightly chilly day. The green onion pancake was smaller and thicker than expected, a 4/10. Definitely have had much better, but it did the job, I guess? But the soup was so good!! A spoonful of chili oil to complete the palate, and I was left bursting at the seams (unfortunately in high waisted jeans). I'm so glad i didn't try the boba because I definitely would not have finished it. The service was good, and you could tell that the people who work there are extremely hardworking and care about the business. By no means is this like...the BEST thai/chinese/etc. food I've ever had, and I was honestly confused as to which cuisines I was to expect, but I enjoyed my experience. it seems like a go-to place that I would always be down to go to if my friends and I can't decide where to eat. It's a really good casual and quick place, and I'll definitely be coming back! read more

Eh, just okay. I've had a lot of Thai in my days, and was so ready to dub Basil restaurant my go to takeout place, but my search continues. I ended up ordering the drunken noodles, with extra sauce (given the Yelp reviews saying they needed more sauce) and the hot sesame wontons. When everything arrived, via Uber Eats (which was very quick, might I add) everything was hot and smelled delicious. I started off with some of the "hot sesame wontons". They were good, I wish there was more of the hot sesame portion to dip the actual plain wonton. The hot sesame just sat poured on top of the wontons, but wasn't enough for all your bites. But like I said, those were good and I would order them again. However, the "drunken noodles" were the real disappointment. The sauce was just not what it needed to be. It was sweet and had a terrible aftertaste. My stomach felt uneasy after eating them, and I decided I would not order them again. When such a classic dish like drunken noodles is so screwed up, I probably wouldn't visit the restaurant again. read more

its aiiittteeeeeee. Been here twice. Recently, came in on a weekday around 5pm. No one in there except us. Dont have super high expectations. I mean, the food is a-ok, but its definitely not your traditional authentic dishes. Personally, anytime theres a menu with like 5 different ethnicity food items, Im super sketch on how authentic it would taste. Ive had: Chicken Curry noodles - this should be a Malaysian dish (Im half malaysian) so I knew when ordering this that it wasnt going to come anywhere close to the real deal. This was super basic, not enough curry taste in the broth. Beef chow fun - same. I knew from the looks of the photos from the Yelp page that this was not going to taste like a 5 star item but I ordered it out of familiarity. The noodles needed to be on the wok longer, giving it that char-type texture. The only thing we truly enjoyed, was the hot sesame wontons. Its pork/shrimp filling wonton. topped with a Satay hot sauce and sesame oil and green onions. very good. read more

Although the food is okay, very disappointed in the staff and management my granddaughter worked there and was being sexually harassed, another employee was slapping her ass and snapping her bra strap, and although she brought it to the management's attention and it was on camera there was nothing done about it, they shrugged it off , sad that they allow this type of behavior in the work place and choose to ignore it, now she has to look for a new job ,you loose a hard dependable worker, make your choices wisely before you end up getting yorself in trouble read more

Couldn't be happier that I found this place. I stumbled upon it willing to give the soup a shot (and at such reasonable prices) as my first meal after suffering mild food poisoning from one of the food trucks on the Yale campus (NOT from Basil). The women who works there is sweet as pie. She's incredibly efficient ensuring people are sat orders taken and sent to the kitchen, all while ordering the phone and getting take-out orders taken care of. On my first visit, I went with the wonton noodle soup and she recommended the noodle type. They also serve Ginger Ale (crucial calories I needed that day!). I couldn't finish the meal but it was a hit with the wontons perfectly wrapped with flavors sealed in, fresh bok choy, and a light broth. The thin angel hair noodles did stick together a bit but that didn't deter me. I went back the following week and she remembered me and asked how I was feeling! I mean, I'm a consultant who is on the road and went to a restaurant for the second time and was remembered?! Made me feel special. My stomach was definitely on the mend by this visit so i began with the hot sesame wontons which were steamed and coated with chili oil and sesame seeds. Solid flavor with a medium amount of heat. Fantastic deal - especially the quantity for the price. I also ordered a shrimp tempura udon soup and a ginger beef with mixed vegetables. I love a proper Japanese udon (true nebayaki style with pork, egg, and everything thrown in the pot). This is not what you will get here. But it will be a pot with hot broth, with fresh vegetables and the shrimp tempura on the side for you to dip as you prefer and perfectly cooked udon noodles. The ginger beef was as expected. I've enjoyed coming here while on the road - for the friendliness, the efficiency, the freshness of the ingredients, the taste, and the very reasonable prices. Thank you for being a 'favorite' while on the road! I only wish you'd open in DC and become my favorite local spot. PS: The crowd is mixed with young students, middle-aged Chinese business people, octogenarians. Different ages and ethnicities. Very casual place. read more

Really amazing flavors, and so so cheap! This will be my go-to southeast asian food place in New Haven if I ever have a craving. We ordered the pad Thai and drunken noodle with roasted pork. I loved the flavors of my drunken noodle, and I even felt like I really didn't need any spices for it even though it wasn't super spicy or anything. We also shared the chicken teriyaki buns as an appetizer. My husband didn't love his pad Thai as much as I loved my drunken noodles, but for the price, it can't be beat! Just docking one star for the mediocre service, a bit dusty water glasses that didn't get filled as quickly as I'd like with as much ice as I'd like, and the slower - than - expected food time. Also entrees should more or less come out onto the table at the same time, but I had to wait around 7-9 minutes for my dish to come out after my husband's came out. read more

One of the best cheap Asian eats in New Haven. Came here on the first night after moving to New Haven from Shreveport, and continued to visit Basil often during my one year at Yale. It served me well in satisfying any cravings for Asian food, since I lived fairly close to this restaurant. Food (8.0/10) = The noodle dishes are the way to go -- fish ball noodle soup, curry noodle soup, the Singapore noodles, etc. Best appetizers were the dumplings and the pan-fried radish cakes (the ones you find at really good dim sum places). The menu itself is quite extensive, and not limited to a specific Asian cuisine. You will see some Chinese, Japanese, and Thai dishes on their menu. Ambiance (7.5/10) = clean and spacious. Service (7.5/10) = fast. standard. friendly. Overall Opinion = Basil is one of the best cheap eats in the area. read more

While in the neighborhood, I stopped in at Basil Restaurant for some Chinese food. Located next door to Kamal, this Asian fusion restaurant has a casual full service dining room with several tables and they offer takeout service. The menu offerings are reasonably priced. Since I was on the road, I decided on takeout. I ordered the Mango Shrimp with Brown and Chicken Chow Fun Noodles. The food was ready to go in about 15 minutes. The Mango Shrimp dish had a mix of broccoli, mango slices, carrots, red peppers, and a few tender shrimp (with tail & cleaned) in a sweet sauce. The brown rice was nice and firm. The Chicken Chow Fun Noodles had a savory flavor with a mix of sprouts, scallions, onions, tender boneless chicken pieces and soft wide rice noodles. The food overall was very good and I'd come back again to try out the dumplings with my next meal. read more

I walked from my hotel around the corner to this little gem. The acoustics are not impressive so you can hear everyone's conversations. They were light and the accompanying sauce enhanced the flavor. It's cheap, fast service, good food and enjoyable. read more

I come here fairly often and I have never had a bad experience. It is a small place with about twenty tables. There is usually only one person hosting, waiting tables, and making drinks. But that person gets to everyone really fast. Everything I have ever ordered has been delicious. I have never waited more than ten minutes for my food. It is always hot and fresh. The menu is fairly large ranging from different kinds of stir-fry to curries to noodle soups. I think there are a lot of options and something for everyone. Considering the amount of food you get this place is very cheap, especially for New Haven. I have never spent more than $35 for two people and that includes, apps (always get 2), drinks, and main meals. I recommend getting the bubble tea for a drink, cold noodle and scallion pancakes for an appetizer, and main meal I usually go with a curry. read more

Veggie Thai Noodle Soup: For under 7 bucks you get a huge bowl of soup loaded with noodles, sprouts, chives, tofu, multiple kinds of mushrooms, and bok choy. The broth has nice Asian spices and I tasted a little citrus in the heat that woke my taste buds up. It was delicious. Tofu Chow Fun: Nice portion loaded with veggies. I tasted a little peanut flavor in the heat. Not over spiced at all. The veggies were cooked perfectly as were the noodles. The tofu is fried and then added in. Makes for a nice texture change. If I wasn't so full from the giant bowl of soup I might have finished my Chow Fun. Think the Chow Fun was around 7 dollars. My entire bill was only 15 something and I had a Thai Ice Tea as well. I stopped in around 3:30 in between lunch and dinner. Place was empty. Hostess/cashier was very friendly and more than willing to help me decide what to order. I could tell the chef and the hostess were talking about me so I gave them a thumbs up.
