Finally a restaurant with Indonesian disches, in the area. Toka is a family owned business, and they are super nice. The restaurant is pretty populair and due to its size quickly filled. If you have a large group, I recommend to reserve. The dishes we ordered were on point: Tempe Goreng, Toka Ayam Goreng (spicy), Acar, Beef Rendang, and the chicken wings. Definitely a place to return to, and try some of the other dishes. I wish the menu had some other Indonesian dishes, but I can't complain, we got one in CT." at least. Paid parking is next door, if you can't find parking on the street.

This was our first time here, and it did not disappoint. Service was friendly and ambience at the restaurant was great. Waitress confirmed that all meat is halal. We started with the wok charred edamame and Toka chicken wings. Both were great; would definitely order the chicken wings again. For entrees, we had the beef mee goreng (egg noodles) and toka ayem goreng (not pictured). Portion sizes were generous and dishes were flavorful. Only critique is that the menu was vague and we did not know the chicken dish was not boneless. Overall great experience and will visit again soon.

Service was great -- they did a great job helping us surprise our friend (played music which was a little embarrassing for us because everyone looked but we loved their commitment). Ordered the beef behoon goreng, it tasted pretty good, could use a little spice kick.

Great little mom and pop restaurant serving a wide array of Asian dishes with a focus on Indonesian cuisine. The owners are really friendly and from Indonesia, bringing authentic flavors to New Haven. I ordered a tempe goreng, beef rendang and finished with a pisano goreng for dessert. The tempe was well cooked with a tasty spicy soy sauce to go with it. The beef was really tender, flavorful with spices and complemented by the soft but not mushy potatoes and crunchy pickled root veggies. I do wish that the beef was not in a huge chunk but broken into smaller ones to soak up the sauce better. Finally, the pisano goreng was a great way to end the meal with some ice cream and fried banana with chocolate sprinkles. Food: 4.5/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Serve: 5/5Beef RendangPisang Goreng

Very friendly staff and knowledgeable! Loved seeing a halal Indonesian spot. We loves the drinks we tried at this spot a strawberry daiquiri mocktails and Pina colada so tasty! The butter chicken was sweet and tasty and the noodles were delicious. We also tried the rock shrimp which was a fried shrimp with a spicy sauce. The chef and the waitress was very nice and helpful

We were very excited to try this place because of the Indonesian food options on the menu. We had the tempeh, bihun goreng and ayam goreng. And finished up with the pisang goreng! Everything was excellent - really true to Indonesian taste and flavors. We plan to try the rendang next time. And once winter hits, the sop buntut. We did not order anything from the menu that was non-Indonesian so can't say how the overall experience is - but highly recommended for those pining for Indonesian cuisine. Excellent service as well and a very pleasant modern interior.

Recently had dinner here. The waitstaff is very friendly and ranging. For appetizers we had chicken satay (not pictured), charred edamame and the fried sweet potato. We were VERY surprised when the sweet potato fries from any common grocery store came out. The chicken satay was delicious and the edamame was good but nothing special. For the main course we both had the spicy butter chicken. As I am more familiar with Indian butter chicken, I was surprised about the look of the chicken; however, it was very good and something I would order again. The Thai Iced Tea was DELICIOUS!!

Super yummy. Went here with my family and we got edamame, hibachi steak, and two servings of the mee noodles with beef (pictured) and chicken. Small interior but cozy, service may be a little slow but it was worth it for the delicious food!

Really authentic Asian and Indonesian cuisine here right on state street in New Haven! This spot is very tiny and great for a nice date night. Smooth jazz filled the room as we sat down and ordered some hot sake. The service was incredible and super friendly. My dad and I got the fried goyza, chicken curry, ox tail soup and beef rendang. Everything was perfect and full of flavor you would expect to find in Asia. I think my favorite was the curry but it's so hard to say. I can't wait to come back! There is parking right being the restaurant too if you can't find parking on the street.

My turn to pick the dinner restaurant nd I think I did a great job. Very nice small quaint restaurant with amazing flavors from this place. The butter chicken was very good, spiced right and the side was different so we asked and it was a pickled cucumber, carrot and pineapple medley which was very good. Very flavorful meal and great friendly service. Definitely going back !!

Beef rendang

The intentions are good, but the beef rendang that gets raves from newly minted Yelpers is disappointing. TOKA aims to bring Manhattan chic here with its Indonesian food. Despite the menu's divisions between starters and other dishes, it's essentially all "small plates," so your best bet is to go as a party of four and share 9 or 10 items. Dwell on the appetizer menu, where the choices are many. The fried shrimp are very nicely fried shrimp. The other reason to order for the table is that the kitchen is apparently still in takeout mode, so mains and starters arrive together. I dug right into my beef rendang when it was served -- and was surprised to find it lukewarm. The price for four bite-sized pieces of meat and two potato chunks, accompanied by nice-looking rice, is definitely Manhattan-style. The flavor was, sadly, not on the level of the place I used to go on the UWS. Service is pleasant and well-meaning. Make a reservation or call before you go, as the restaurant is small and the lunch hours posted are not accurate.

Love this place! Friendly staff! Oooh the food is like coming home to a home cooked meal! That first bite I am transported to Indonesia...delicious, savory and oh so yummy! Beef Satay, Rendang, Bakso...

Hot and sour soup

Definitely recommend this excellent Indonesian restaurant. The food is very flavorful and large portions. The people working there are super nice and will make you feel like family. Specifically recommend the Mee Goreng. Will be back soon :)

Had a good experience at this small place on State Street New Haven. Food and service was terrific last Sunday for a birthday gathering.

Several of us arrived early (and we had added a person between the reservation to the dinner time) but the restaurant was able to accommodate us with no issues and we were seated immediately! Plenty of street parking too around that time nearby. The restaurant was not crowded at that time, and overall quiet enough to encourage normal volume conversation. The waitress who served us was extremely great, very accommodating, giving us recs, and doing a great job keeping all our information organized. We ordered drinks, some appetizers, and several rounds of food. The starters came out a bit slow, but soon when all our entrees were out it was a ton of food! We also asked the waitress if she could just choose rolls for us with a given budget, and she did a great job! Everything tasted great. Overall great service and good food! I particularly loved the chicken katsu (huge portion!) and the sashimi. Highly recommend!

They…read morehave a wonderfully long happy hour every day lasting between 4pm and 7pm, meaning I can stop by before trivia, get a bunch of drinks and apps, and then do some trivia! Totally worth it and a really great way to spend a Thursday evening. Service is always kind, I tend to go in a small group with the intention of chatting, hanging out, and eating a few bites while we wait for trivia to start. We get in well before trivia so we never have issues with seating, but it starts to fill up as 7 rolls around! The chive bites are a showstopper--my friends and I almost always do 2 orders or more, and we love the sauce and dip everything else in it as well. The boneless wings are delicious and not a bar's typical "chicken nugget"-esque wing, but rather a really great fried bite. Their lemon drop is $6 during happy hour, so how could I not pick that as my drink of choice? And their spicy basil udon with chicken or tofu is delicious every time. Last night when I was there, the owner, Michael, gave us our shots for coming 3rd place in trivia and he was super pleasant! The whole place seems to have tons of events (like a Survivor watchparty night I'd love to catch!!) and just the best vibe ever. Pride flags are abound and it's a really great spot. Worth stopping by! I came for the trivia but found myself wanting to come to do more trivia just to get those happy hour appetizers and that spicy basil udon :)
