Yum! Yum! Yum! This restaurant was wonderful! Great Asian decor and a wonderful welcoming entrance. They have sit down or take out. We sampled a little of everything. We had wine and Thai iced tea. Both were great! For appetizers we shared chicken sate, crab Rangoon and egg rolls. They came out one by one which was perfect. That way we could enjoy each dish individually. There was so much to enjoy! Amazing flavors and presentation. The entrees came out together, which was wonderful so we could share everything. We had Pad Thai, green curry with chicken, drunken noodles with chicken, and sweet and sour pork. Each dish was a beautiful blend of flavors and beautifully presented. They were so balanced. What a delightful combination of sweet, savory and spicy! Everything is homemade! Everything!!! Slow down and enjoy those delicious flavors. You won't be disappointed. We really wanted to try the mango and sweet sticky rice, but we were all too full. Hopefully we'll go back and give it a try. This is one of the best Thai restaurants we've visited. Outstanding! Unfortunately, we came on a night they were clearly short staffed. Despite a reservation we waited 30 minutes for a table. We place our full order right away, didn't even get water for 10 minutes. Another table that was seated after us got appetizers before we did. The Pad Thai was gluey and overcooked, and the duck was really dry. Altogether a disappointing experience. read more

How can very standard items----a fresh roll, for example, be unavailable on a Saturday night at 630? We decided on soups.... Again only two choices .....we asked for mild spice level and were told only one spice level available-----okay we are hungry, how hot can it be? Okay, fine, we ordered very delicious curry puffs that came quickly.....fortunately, cause the wait for the main dishes was insane! No acknowledgement, no apology, nothing as if we were invisible for 30mins My wife was starving at this point and simply wanted some rice to hold her over, but we were totally ignored by our gleeful server Soup comes finally...I have a sip and although no stranger to Spicey, I started coughing like mad! My wife's soup is unbearably hot.....she tries to dilute it with water but that doesn't help and she has none of it I made it through mine and honestly it was tasty and flavorful...hot but good My chicken curry was good, not great and a small portion Bill came quickly....no delay there. Despite noticing and commenting on a full, big untouched soup bowl..large size for $13........sitting untouched on table where my wife had already left, a comment by server of 'too hot?', but no apology, no remorse, no offer for even partial compensation, just a dismissive reaction and the full bill! Shout out to Som Siam Thai restaurant! We had not been in for a while and got takeout this week. It was truly fantastic! We had veggie pad Thai and tofu Massaman curry. The pad Thai was my favorite ever! Both dishes were incredibly tasty and left me thinking about them first thing when I woke up the next morning. The family who owns the restaurant are very sweet, hard-working folks. They also did some great renovations recently. The space looks beautiful and cozy. Can't wait to go back to dine in! Friendly and accommodating staff, diverse menu, reasonable prices, and the veggies are very fresh, and Thai dishes prepared with very little oil, almost like Viet cuisine. The server was completely incompetent and very slow. We literally had to go get our own menus and remind her that we were present. It took like 15 minutes for her to take our order, even though there was only one other table at the restaurant. When we finally got the food, the order was wrong but because we waited so long we just ate what we got. Som Siam is a hidden jewel in the heart of the quaint sea side town of Guilford, CT. They have a sister location in Old Saybrook, CT. It can be found just off the beaten path from the town green down a little alley way along the main road. The interior is intimate and fills the interior of a small house. It has maybe 8 tables total and is surprisingly quiet. The reasonably inexpensive lunch specials a soup or salad and a small desert with each entrée. They have the best Thai iced tea. It was just the right amount of condensed milk to compliment the flavorful Thai tea & perfect on a hot summer day after a long walk around the town green. I selected the peanut salad and Dan selected the rice noodle soup to start. The salad was fresh and tasty and just the right size. The soup was flavorful and surprisingly packed with ingredients. For my entrée I selected the Pad See-Ew (Pan fried flat rice noodles in a sweet soy sauce with egg, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, and your choice of meat). My lunch partner selected the Red Curry (Red Curry Spices, cooked in a coconut milk with bamboo shoot, carrots, pineapple, fresh zucchini and basil, lime leaves, and again your choice of meat). We both opted for the chicken but had the options of vegetable, tofu, beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, duck, or seafood/fish. The Pad See-Ew was very similar to Pad Thai except with larger flat rice noodles and packed with more vegetable varieties. The sauce was flavorful and light compared to the heavier noodles. Dan's Red Curryt was just spicy enough to enjoy without sending you racing to the water. It was paired with white sticky rice and served separately to prevent it from becoming soggy. We both enjoyed our entrées and will definitely be back. Our desert was a tapioca pudding. It wasn't like any I had had before it was not creamy like traditional tapioca. It was also mixed with corn which created a sweet and salty flavor that was nice. Definitely was different. I would have liked mango in place of the corn in the tapioca. read more

Delicious! Six of us took a chance on Som Siam for lunch (we intended to go to a different restaurant nearby but they were crowded). It's set back from the road, down a short, pretty walkway. The decor is authentic and the service was fantastic! We never had to wait, or ask, it seemed as if our every need was anticipated. The food was outstanding, especially the pad thai. All the vegetables were fresh and carefully, sometimes artfully, cut... not hacked like in other places. You can tell the chefs/cooks respect the food. Ruffled edges on carrots, tiny, whole snow peas so tender it was delight to the palate. Each bite was full of flavor and texture! I've been to Som Siam a few times, with an old friend who is a regular, knows the staff and very much prefers this place to the Thai places in downtown New Haven. Whatever we get, it's always good and kind of special. Like, for example, pork knuckles. After spending part of the morning browsing the shops on the green with my mom and husband, we decided it was time for lunch. Som Siam was what we all unanimously decided on. We entered the small restaurant which occupies a house. The dining room is very intimate, though not loud considering how small it is. The lunch specials were an excellent deal, between $7 to $8 with a choice of soup or salad, and a tapioca dessert. The salad was much better then that which is usually offered at a Thai restaurant. It was fresh and crunchy. The dressing was a light peanut and vinegar mix, very tasty! My mom had the chicken soup which she said was outstanding. For my meal I ordered the Som Siam noodles with beef. It consisted of egg noodles, thinly sliced beef, and an assortment of veggies and pineapple in a moderately spicy yellow curry. It was excellent and helped relieve my stuffy nose. I enjoyed the fact that it was served on a plate and the curry was thick, not soupy. Most places I have had this dish it has been more of a soup. This version was by far my favorite. My husband had the peanut curry and chicken which was sweet but also had a very nice spicy kick to it. My mom ordered a chicken stir fry dish which was the least spicy of the meals but still very good and garlicky. The complimentary dessert consisted of a small bowl of what seemed to be tapioca, corn, taro, and beans in coconut milk. A good mix of salty and sweet but definitely not for everyone. Service was pleasant and quick. The restaurant was busy during the early lunch hours. I would definitely eat here again though I would find out if they take reservations at dinner. read more

I'm continually left unimpressed by this place. It's a small notch below the other Thai place in town, slightly more expensive (higher rent, I'd imagine), and doesn't deliver. Sometimes the dishes are quite good, but other times they are outright bland. If you're on the Guilford Green for one of the many summer concerts or the annual Shakespeare thing, this is a pretty good choice for a picnic dinner. Otherwise...meh. read more

I've been here several times and always thought it was good. But as I branch out and try other Thai restaurants, I've come to realize it is nothing special. One complaint; tiny egg rolls. Their appetizer dish comprises of several egg rolls, each being the size of my big toe. They are very good, but they're not enough for two people. Another complaint is that the prices are slightly higher than other Thai restaurants. For instance, egg rolls and chicken Som Siam Noodles cost me $18.00. The same items at Thai Awesome in Hamden cost $13.00. I understand Siam's location is better, but for the higher price you'd think they'd weatherproof their windows with something better than duct tape. It just makes me wonder, if that's visible on the outside, what sort of corners are they cutting inside the kitchen that are not so visible. read more

Terrible experience!! Sit down for more than 20 min, a single waitress how was the only one taking care of the costumes, stopped by and ask the order. After 20 min, when I asked about the appetizer I ordered, told me I have to wait 15 more min for appetizer and longer for my food!
