Just placed order thru uber eats and the Pho noodles were angel hair and the broth was not Pho. My spring rolls were so messy that they fell apart trying to eat. No peanut sauce for them either. I ordered delivery and...The white rice is edible. I ordered steamed chicken and vegetables with peanut sauce. The sauce was an odd curdled texture and all congealed on the tepid chicken. I have had the same dish at other restaurants and it does not look like this. The avocado in the rolls had already turned brown. There was a dark hair stuck to the lid. Gross. I took a chance on ordering from this place for the first time, all the reviews seem legit so I figured I'd give it a shot. For lunch I ordered the lunch special of Pad Thai with chicken and I added Shrimp for an extra $3. The delivery came in about 30 minutes (this was through DoorDash by the way. The reason for my 1 star is because the food had a foul spoiled smell. When I opened the bag, the food looked great but the smell was terrible. I believe it was either the chicken or shrimp that could have been spoiled. The noodles were also way over cooked. I tried 2 bites to see if it was worth eating through the smell because I was so hungry. Nope - $15 worth of food straight into the garbage. read more

That sets the bar pretty high don't you think? We stopped in for an early Saturday dinner before catching a Quinnipiac hockey game. Thai Awesome is a little larger inside than you would expect, it must have had a dozen or so tables and booths. Service was prompt and friendly. We tried three dishes- the old standard Pad Thai ($9.99), a Green Curry with Chicken (also $9.99), and a Chef Special called Dancing Squid ($12.99) for me. The Squid was advertised as spicy and it was -but to me it was perfectly spicy. It had a definite burn to it, but in a nice way. Delicious squid, carrots, onions, green beans in a spicy garlic sauce with rice. A Terrific dish. I sampled the other two. The Pad Thai was very flavorful and had a nice sauce to it -sometimes Pad Thai is served a little dry, The Green Curry was wonderful - a velvety curry with sweet/tart pineapple. A real nice dish. Thai Smile is my favorite Thai place in the area. I always get the pad see ew with beef (which is good quality meat) and a Thai Iced Tea.

If this is the same place I'm thinking if it's pretty good. Granted the reason I gave it four stars is because I haven't been there in years, so I can only give it a review based on what I remember it being. This is a place I used to go to when I went to Hamden. The food was pretty good. The pad Thai and pad see noodle dish were also pretty good. One time my mom got the drunken noodles, now keep in mind this was the first time we tried the place, and she was getting toward all the spice, and it was so hot her whole face was red from the heat. Went downhill rapidly. The menu has changed, all the prices are much higher, but the real issue is the food. The Tom Yum that had I have eaten since they opened the doors has been magnificent, but is now no better than dishwater with red pepper sauce. When asked why they changed the recipe, I was told they wanted to make it the way it is in Thailand-that folks had complained about it. I cannot fathom who would have complained about the soup, but the 'authentic' version is inedible. If they wanted so much authenticity, why add crab meat 'langoon' to the menu? This is the stuff you get at a Chinese takeout-and the one I sampled here had spoiled crab meat inside-I sent it back. The beef in macadamia beef was so tough it was also inedible. We were told to order stew beef next time if we wanted tender beef. The pineapple promised was no where in the dish. Another one bites the dust. read more

With a name like "awesome" the expectations are a bit too high. But a very solid Thai restaurant. First, as others have said, the parking is just ridiculous. Non-existent. So good luck with that. But went on a lunch. Good portion and good selection, but it would be nice to have a cup of soup or appetizer with it. App prices on their own seem a little steep in comparison. Why would I spent $6 for soup, when a dish costs $8? Doesn't make much sense. Service was efficient. But the Drunken Noodles lacked a certain oomph. Not much spice to it at all (despite characterizing it) and afterwards, I was left with a little feeling that it missed a complexity of flavors. Frankly, it was kind of forgettable. "Thai Good". Excellent food very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. One of the few Thai restaurants were the food is really authentic. No washed down flavors, foods are not laden with fillers like celery and carrots. The dishes we had were as I remember them in Thailand. Bravo, keep up the good work. read more

The only thing I'd get from Thai Awesome was the green curry with tofu. I live literally a block away, so I'd walk down here for takeout. When they became Thai Smile the same dish changed to something unrecognizable. I'm a vegetarian, so I can't comment on most of the menu, but I tried this place a couple of times and I just didn't care for it. A sweet young Thai girl greeted us & since we were dining early so we were the only ones there. A number of customers came in to pick up to go orders. We started with Fresh Spring Rolls; they were delish but we preferred the peanut sauce they served under the previous owner. Our waitress brought us some peanut sauce & it was just perfect. The Crab Rangoon's were yummy as well. Our entree's were Tiger Beef & Drunken Noodles with Shrimp. Both were perfectly prepared. Tender thin sliced Beef with a delicious dipping sauce & tasty steamed veggies. The Drunken Noodles were plentiful with tender Shrimp & I had plenty to take home for tomorrow's lunch. Another thing we loved was the ambiance with some soft beautiful Thai music playing. I hope my review invites you to try Thai Smile and walk away smiling like we did. Truth be told, I thought the restaurant logo was a bit too emoji looking and suggests a less than quality restuarant. Not the case...definitely worth a try with many future returns! Today was my first time eating here. I asked the waitress if they had a vegetarian noodle soup. She pointed at one of the items on the list and suggested I could get it without the meat of fish in it. I asked if the stock was made with meat of fish. She said she would ask the chef. She came back to my table and told me that the chef would make a vegetarian noodle soup for me. It was deliscious. Sweet, sour, spicy with lots of fresh vegetables, tofu, and some noddles. For at least a week of my life, perhaps longer, "Thai Awesome" has become a phrase used when something surpasses being just regular ol' "awesome." This phenomenon is not necessarily due to the supremacy of the food, but merely the hilarity and awesomeness inherent in its name. When weighing Thai places at my friend's house in New Haven, we came across the menu for Thai Awesome and joked that we should order from there. After perusing the menu and seeing that the prices were lower than both other places we were considering, we said, "Why not?" and did just that. We got take out, but the place smelled wonderfully. Also, the man who runs the Korean Cart somewhere around Yale (I don't live in New Haven) was eating his dinner there. We took both of these to be very good signs I opted for my usual Tom Yum Soup as well as the Vegetable Delight. My friend got the Tom Kah Gai and Summer Rolls. We both thought our soups were sweeter than is typical. The Vegetable Delight was also pretty sweet. Some of the veggies in both the Vegetable Delight and Tom Yum were a little more cooked than I usually like, but both dishes were very good. Adding to the awesomenss is your ability to order dishes with names like: Awesome Lemongrass, Awesome Beef, Lard Nah and Thai Awesome as well as Sukiyaki and Phuket Fried Rice (on Dixwell Ave!! ...my friend and I were giggling like school girls) Perhaps the food isn't quite awesome (or at least the dishes we sampled)...but the name certainly is (earns the place a whole extra star)! And with a friendly staff, quick service and reasonable prices for decent quality...I would have to agree that Thai Awesome is pretty darn awesome. read more

I've been meaning to check out this place ever since my Dad informed me about it. Recently I visited. I got the rice noodles with red curry and chicken. I forgot its name, it was charida noodles or something like that. It tasted excellent. I liked everything from the way the food was presented (colorful & pretty) to the actual plate itself (it was some cool wavy porcelin design). After done eating, the waitress asked, "Was it too spicy?". I chuckled a bit because if she had looked at my plate she wouldn't have asked. There was nothing left. Yes the sauce was spicy, but I like spicy. I ate everything with my nose runny and all. When my nose gets runny that's a good indication it's spicy. When my eyes get watery, that's a good indication it's too spicy :-) The dish I ordered had 1 pepper symbol shown on the menu. Golly gee, I can't imagine what their 2-pepper symbol items are like. I have been to many thai restaurants, but this one sticks out. You can easily miss it though driving on Dixwell ave, but if you happen to be lucky enough to spot it, it is worth going inside. Their picture should be in the dictionary next to the term ''Best Customer Service!'' I will spare you all the details, but this wonderful family bent over BACKWARDS to make it up to us that we had a not so great experience last night. Considering it was like 1 time that we had a problem, out of 20 that we've gotten food from there, it really was no big deal. Plus, they had a new chef from a different part of the country, and the Owner is usually there overseeing the kitchen, but just had something come up last night. So, I can understand...and was willing to let it drop with the phone call I made to make them aware.....(see my note at bottom of update for what happened earlier today and last night). Anyway, they MORE than made it right with us, we look forward very much to our next meal from there! Next time ,we will finally eat there in person, instead of always getting takeout. The owners, Kim and "A", are just the most genuine, caring, and wonderful people I have ever met as a result of being a customer somewhere (and I have always had a knack for making friends with waitresses or owners at my fave places over the years)....but very few people I know, would do what they did . Okay, I'll agree with the name; pretty awesome. Came here with my boyfriend and two friends on Saturday. Small place, weird to park (we parked in front because we could), but friendly staff and very good food! The menu was thorough but not completely overwhelming - they knew what dishes they were good at. All of us ordered some form of curry - I had the yellow curry with squid, pineapple, baby corn, etc. Terrific! It was pretty hot so I took half of it home and had a tasty lunch yesterday. Prices were fair. Place was a bit quiet (I think at one point the music turned off and it was one of those weird quiet scenarios where you felt the other tables looking at each other like oh no, they can hear us now!) but otherwise the ambiance was fine. read more
