Mostly a take out establishment but there are a few tables and counter seating! The food was delicious and made fresh to order!! Very tasty and seasoned perfectly!! This is a hole in the wall Thai takeout place that gives you good value for the money. I got my usual, which was tofu with broccoli and tofu pad see ew, no egg. The pad see ew has a delicious sauce that gets absorbed by the rice noodles and makes them delicious. The tofu with broccoli, according to the menu, is flavored with two sauces; black bean sauce and a "special Thai sauce." The result is a nice bold, savory flavor. The tofu is high quality and the vegetables are always fresh and crispy in both dishes. This place's only competition is Bangkok Blvd. Their food is very good, but the portion sizes are smaller and the prices are higher. With that said, this place makes consistently good food and you get more food for the dollar, which makes it an easy recommendation. read more

I have been in Hamden in 2018 and 2019 moved to New Haven. I never try this restaurant before. But today I went to Hamden again with my friend and she took me visit at this place. I ordered Hot Basil Leaf with Chicken and extra pay more for fried egg. They serve with "Nampla Plik" fish sauce with fresh chilies very good. I loved it. It's OK, but the last time I went there I arrived with cash to pick up my order and did not have my wallet. The cashier said they didn't have any change, so no cash. He said I could charge it, but by the I got to my car I decided that this is no way to run a business. There's plenty of Thai places closer to me than this anyway. read more

Background - I didn't want "fancy" or "authentic" Thai food that I would be paying out the wazoo for, and I really just wanted some run of the mill mediocre Pad Kee Mao. While the likes of Pok Pok have a place in my heart, I just wanted some delicious sauce and noodles tonight. My partner and I found this hidden little hole in the wall in a random strip mall in Connecticut and got to ordering. The place looks like a small Chinese take-out restaurant with it's minimalistic seating, but I appreciated that the walls were bare/clean and sparsely decorated with touches of Thai Culture (absent was the ostentation and darkness of other places like Spice and Sea). The Friday crew consisted of an middle-aged gentleman in the front and who I assume was his father cooking in the back. Our orders were put in and arrived quite quickly - Pad Kee Mao (Chicken), Tom Yum Koong (Shrimp Tom Yum Soup), Papaya Salad, and a Thai Iced Tea. The presentation was normal, but we were thoroughly impressed with not only how clean it was, but how authentic it did taste (reminding me of the half-house/half-eateries in Thailand, and my partner of his two month stint farming in Krabi-town). The Pad Kee Mao didn't taste overly sweet and had that kick that you expect in a more nuanced way. The Papaya salad also had that nice acerbic tang with the heat you expect. The Tom Yum was a bit less tangy than I liked, but it was definitely not a disappointment. I love Thai Spice ! Best Thai food around the area. I used to live down the street and now I live a whole state away and can't come over here anymore but when passing to NYC I always make sure to visit this location and grab something to eat. I love the Thai rolls with the sauce soooo good. The chicken Satay is amazing and so is their peanut sauce. I also love the chicken basil fried rice with the egg on top. The rice is made to perfection and its a delicious combination of spicy and flavorful. I also had the Pad Kee Mao, and it's soooo good. Honestly a little surprised. We came here because my partner did not want good Thai but wanted cheap Thai and this was an option on the way home. The shop was fairly unassuming tucked into a strip mall and the service and atmosphere were highly casual. Walking in, we went ahead and grabbed take out menus to browse even though we intended to eat in. We ordered a pad see mee, som tom, and tom yum all of which were good. The food was prepared quickly and fresh. The soup was the most average being a bit more on the sweet side than I expected. The noodles were excellent flavor and texture. Things were cooked well and quite tasty. Finally the som tom was reasonably spicy and the flavors were just excellent. That is the dish I usually gage for flavor as it is one of my favorites. While the seating area doesn't hold any particular charm, the food and the prices merit solid consideration. I would recommend picking up food here if it is nearby. read more

I'm a huge fan of Pad Thai but wanted to try something different. Never had Pad See Ew before but it was very good. I would consider it a thicker noodle than Pad Thai. The Thai Rolls were nice and crispy. If you're shopping in Hamden Plaza and get hungry, you should stop here. read more

And eating here, their food reminds me of the local street food across our house in Bangyai, Nonthaburi where my siblings and I would usually eat. I've been sick for a week with bronchitis and all I was craving was some spicy Thai soup. I happened to be driving by and ordered 2 servings of Tom Yum. Also, spring rolls. Spring rolls were good, but dipping sauce lacked flavor. The soup was way too sweet. Not spicy at all. I had to throw it out. I lost out on ~$9. I've been going to Thai Spice for years now, way before it looks like what it looks like now. This has always been a favorite of mine to frequent. I usually get either the basil fried rice with eggs & pineapples or I get the fried rice solely. Their prices did increase drastically in the last two years but it's worth it because the food is delicious. We love Thai Food & have been to this place 5-6 times but we're done. The customer service is non-existent (this is key for me, almost as important as the food), there's a language barrier when ordering over the phone and as a result, they forgot 2 items included with lunch specials in today's take-out order. Didn't seem worth the effort to call and explain when I got home. We've eaten loads of Thai food around this country & abroad and I've always appreciated the congeniality we receive but not here. Firstly, you're acknowledged nominally. Pretty sure I didn't get a 'thank you' when I left. 2) They're really slow - even when you're the only people there. 3) They do NOTHING to enhance their food preparations. Yes, I like that! No, it doesn't change the taste of the food but when I get pretty flowers or a curled carrot or whatever, it shows me the establishment cares to make an impression & it's not my experience that we pay more for this artistry. Finally, I haven't found Thai Spice to be especially clean. I used to clean houses, so I'm really particular but the tables at least should be free of sticky bits. Worst Tom yum soup I've ever had. Broth was over seasoned to the point that it was inedible, and I love flavorful spicy dishes but this was way too much. My husband and I were frequent visitors to Thai Spice when we first moved to Hamden (for years ago). We were there weekly! Babies have slowed our going out rituals but Thai Spice is still one of our "go to take-out places." The family that owns that place is very friendly. So much so, that when we noticed a year ago that the new chicken they were using was chewy, they fixed it! Since then, we have had no issues with anything we have ordered and guests request Thai Spice when they steer in town.
