Located right next to Thyme and Season, this is a competent Chinese takeout spot. The Szechuan Tofu was good, had a nice spicy sauce and a good variety of vegetables. The dish that really impressed me, however, was their vegetable lo mein. Expertly seasoned, this is the most savory lo mein I've ever had from a Chinese takeout. Last summer I worked up the street from Gold Star and my boss would get lunch from there often. I kept meaning to drop on for lunch sometime myself, but I never did. Now that I've been enjoying a few months of Chinese food madness, I figured it was finally time to pop in for some chow. I ordered my usual General Tso's tofu and also an order of Szechuan tofu. She told me she would need to check with the kitchen, but she thought they only had enough tofu for one tofu dish. She added that they'd be getting more tomorrow. I was super hungry and I didn't want to wait another day, so I ordered Szechuan tofu and broccoli in garlic sauce. The food was incredible. Definitely some of the best Szechuan tofu I've had in a long time. The broccoli in garlic sauce was great, too, and came eith a fair amount of mixed veggies. I was a little disappointed I didn't get to try my usual General Tso's tofu, but I'm sure I'll return to Gold Star to spend time with the General another day. read more

I stopped there for the first time and ordered two lunch combinations, both the boneless spareribs and sweet and sour chicken were mediocre; Not the best and not the worst. The fried rice was not good. It was just rice - no veggies no sprouts no seasoning, etc. very bland. They at least should put something in it! In search of a new Chinese restaurant near work, my coworkers and I decided to try this place out. They only offer delivery within a 2 mile radius. After Googling it, we found out that we were 3 miles away. So, I collected the money and offered to make the drive. On Whitney Ave, near Ray & Mike's, Gold Star was easy to find. Parking in the front is tight, but there's more parking in the back. We placed our order off of their web site, where they offer some great coupons. We were able to pick up a free order of crab rangoon. Everyone enjoyed their meals; pork & broccoli, sweet & sour chicken and beef & broccoli. There were two small complaints about the order. First, the pork pieces were very large in the pork & broccoli. Second, the egg roll was very greasy, to the point that it was dripping oil. That being said, the sauces used were great. Literally the WORST Chinese food I have ever eaten. The crab Rangoon is sickly sweet. All you taste is sugar with NO seasoning at all. The sweet and sour chicken was the nastiest thing I've ever seen. Imagine General TSOs chicken without sauce, with the breading soggy and flavorless. Thats Gold Stars sweet and sour chicken (with a tub of sweet and sour sauce on the side) General TSOs shrimp- old overcooked shrimp in a watered down General TSOs sauce with u see cooked broccoli. Plus the shrimp was different colors Wonton soup- no complaints or compliments. It's dumplings in broth Spring rolls- wrapper was nicely cooked, crispy perfect color. Inside was unseasoned and tasteless Pork fried rice- NO vegetables, bland and just gross and old tasting Homemade duck sauce- literally puréed mango with corn syrup. I've never seen a Chinese place offer such interesting combo platters. For around $8, I was able to get sweet and sour chicken, boneless spare ribs and fried shrimp with fried rice. And they didn't skimp on the food because it was a combination of three things - I'd say I got just as much boneless spare ribs as I would have if I ordered it on its own. Two people in our group got a combo - also around $8 - with general tso's chicken, teriyaki beef, crab rangoons and fried rice. Bonus: This place delivers. So while studying, when we went outside to grab our delivery, I was very surprised by how heavy our bags - with food for just four people - were. Kinda hood. Kinda salty. Pretty greasy. So in essence - this place is your typical fake Chinese take out joint. The lunch specials are really cheap. They're mostly under $7. I opted for one of the "Gold Star combination platters." My platter included General Tso's chicken, beef teriyaki, crab ragoons, and white rice. Only the crab ragoons stood out. Everything else was pretty meh. The beef teriyaki was dry like jerky on the inside but super greasy on the outside. The General Tso's was not horrendous, but it certainly would not make the chicken general proud either. Whatever though - I can't really ask for much more for $10.37. In short, avoid this place. The food/prep is bland and really poor quality. I rarely leave reviews except when the service/product is exceptionally bad or good. This is one for the bad column. We ordered Lo Mein over the phone and I arrived 5 minutes later to pickup. The meals were already bagged and waiting for me, and I even commented to them: "wow, that was really fast", thinking that was a good thing. Of course in hindsight it was *too* fast. I got back home within 5 minutes and opened the containers. We right away noticed how dry the noodles were, and just lukewarm, and concluded that they must have been cooked quite a while earlier and "assembled" with meat/vegetables into meals when I called. There also wasn't very much meat or veggies in the meal. Even the egg rolls were dry and "stale". The result was a fairly tasteless, unsatisfying meal. Normally when we want Chinese food we just order from Blessings II Go down the street (which has always had great food) but this was a Monday and they were closed, while I saw that Gold Star nearby was open. My wife had actually tried Gold Star once before, about a month before this, and was not very impressed but suggested giving Gold Star a second chance. Twice is enough. This last experience has clinched it for us. We even shared this experience with co-workers, who concurred with similar experiences. We won't be back. read more

I usually only get the steamed chicken with broccoli and crab rangoons when I order from here, but both are delicious!! Hence why Gold star is my go to for chinese food. The steamed chicken isnt slimy like it is at other places; it always tastes fresh. I always have leftovers too because they give you so much for your money! read more

My students and I ordered from this restaurant last week. The food was pretty good. The kids couldn't stop raving about this place. I will talk a bit about the service and they will let you know about the food. Golden Star's service was excellent. I had a big order so I called them in advance to let them know what time I needed the food. They had my order ready to go when I got there. They even gave me extra plates to use. The crab rangoons are some of the best I have ever tried. They have fast delivery and the food is good I have never had a bad meal from here. Also the online ordering is a huge perk and you can pay online when you place the order with a credit card if you forgot to stop and get cash. Definitely will keep ordering from them read more

gold star has changed hands and is not nearly as good as it used to be. seems like they dont change the grease in the fryers near enough, because everything tastes like grease now... this was an institution for so long and has gone way down hill, hard to find another good chinese place in wallingford, but the hunt is now on, my husband got sick from the food on the last go round! read more
