A simple desire for some healthy hot soup on a cold day, turned into a delicious buffet of Thai dishes. We started with the spring rolls. The cashew nut with pineapple, water chestnuts, and an assortment of vegetables were savory and filling. The eggplant and asparagus entree comes in three levels of spicy. It included sautéed eggplants with scallions, basil leaves, bean sauce and a wide assortment of vegetables. The rice noodle soup was delicious and filled with fresh vegetables. Food is 1-2 stars- not that well prepared and odd cardboard like flavors. I wouldn't go here for food. Ambiance- it's still a cute place for a date or whatever, 4 stars. Service is usually fast. I went to this restaurant for the first time around 4 years ago with a friend that really loved it, and I have been going and ordering take out since then. I had never tried Thai food before, so I can't tell you if this is authentic Thai food or not, but I really like it. It is a very cute restaurant, with nice service and really good prices. If you are on a budget and want to go out for dinner, this is your place to go. I haven't been to the restaurant since the pandemic, but we recently ordered delivery through Grubhub. Our favorite dishes are Pork Thai Fried Rice and Pad Thai Noodles with chicken and shrimp (I write that in the comments, if not, they come with chicken only). This last time I also added an Eggplant dish to have some more veggies in the meal, and it was so much food that we had enough for dinner and lunch the next day (and we eat big portions!). WOW. That is all I can continue to say about this restaurant. It far surpassed all of my expectations. If you are stopping by Yale or happen to be in downtown New Haven, this is the place to go! It doesn't really seem like anything special but it is such a cute restaurant with amazing food and great prices. I got the thai fried rice which is always a solid choice for any fried rice lover such as myself. It comes as a huge mound of rice which I devoured and almost finished (a first for me!). My mom got the lunch special which by far is the best deal. It is only $11 for a bento box filled with rice, curry, salad, fruit, and appetizers. It also comes with a bowl of soup. I highly recommend coming here if you are looking for thai food. This is one of the best thai restaurants I have ever been to (and I have been to a lot)! Very rude staff with no respect for their customers. Visited this place today (I live nearby and have been visiting it often) but this visit made me feel so bad and disrespected. I paid my bill but did not tip them upon which one of the waiters came up to me and asked me to tip. I provided a tip upon which he left my table with this remark "you don't know?" extremely rudely and angrily. The place was crowded hence didn't want to make a fuss about it. A few minutes later, he returned and started collecting the dishes from the table also very angrily. Firstly, you're not entitled to a tip. It depends on the customer if they want to tip you. Secondly, you surely don't have the right to disrespect your customers, taunt and fight them for not providing you with tip. Even if you so want a tip, you can very respectfully ask for it. I've been a regular customer but I'm very glad for your behavior today. I'll make sure I never visit this place again. We walked in late on a Sunday and The woman working greeted us warmly. The interior has Thai pictures/decor and feels very authentic. We ordered the shrimp pad Thai and the chicken basil entree. Pad Thai is a classic go-to for Thai food in New Haven, and it's very close to downtown. I've had almost all of the classic Pad Thai offerings (whether catered or dine-in), and they're all perfect comfort foods at very reasonable prices. They've recently updated their menus, so drunken noodles' protein is now chicken unless you go vegetarian. The dish comes out steaming hot from the wok. It's topped with carrots, onions, eggs, basil, and tomatoes, and the rice noodles are flat, chewy, and subtly sweet and spicy. The tom yum soup is also one of my favorites. Definitely get it if you're more health-conscious. It's a sour-spicy broth brimming with shrimp, squid, imitation crab, scallops, and thin rice noodles. Green Thai curry is also a healthy Thai option. They cook it with chicken breast, eggplant, bamboo strips, red bell pepper, and zucchini. I love the lightly sweet, coconut-y broth that immerses every bit of the dish. Service is prompt, and the servers are very sweet. The pad thai noodles were surprisingly tasty, even though the chunks of vegetables in the noodles were not. The service is great, and the restaurant ambiance was pretty decent. Pad Thai is the BEST Thai restaurant in all of New Haven - prices are more than reasonable ($7.95 noodle / rice entrees during lunch and $9.95 during dinner!!) and the food is mouthwateringly delicious. Over the past three and a half years I've gone to school in New Haven, I have dined at Pad Thai at least 35 times, and ordered take-out another 30 more (not kidding). There was a point in my life where I went to Pad Thai 2-3 times a week for weeks in a row. My go-to order is the Drunken Noodles (Pad Kee Mao) with tofu and veggies. It is chock-full of veggies (to make you feel less guilty about eating an entire plate of greasy carbs!) - with broccoli, tomato, red / green bell peppers, scrambled eggs, basil, green beans, and of course, tofu. The basil gives it an amazing and fragrant aroma - absolutely mouthwatering. The tofu is infused with the incredible spicy sauce and is a little crispy on the outside but super soft and moist on the inside, so you're definitely not going to run into the problem of trying to choke down flavorless blocks of tofu. I normally don't order tofu dishes, but I think the tofu + veggie version of the Drunken Noodles are the best combination. My friends always order chicken + shrimp, so I would recommend that as well. However, I have heard that the chicken is not as moist. The flat and wide rice noodles are always cooked perfectly - never stuck together, al dente, and evenly coated in the chili oil. Also, I have to emphasize that the spice isn't just cheap chili oil from the Asian supermarket - there is a depth and customization to it that is authentically Thai, and they use real chilis. I love being able to customize the spice flavor - from 1 to 5, I always order 5 but from friends who are less tolerant of spicy foods, they have said levels 1-3 are very accommodating. The hot and sour soup is the perfect appetizer - it comes with chicken and shrimp, tomatoes, mushrooms, etc and is the perfect hybrid of spice and tanginess. I've also ordered the Thai fried rice, sriracha fried rice, tom yum noodle soup, and the classic Pad Thai, all excellent dishes. However, the Drunken Noodles are the star of the show. Another thing that stands out about Pad Thai is the friendliness and service. The waitress is so kind and patient, and always has a smile on her face. She remembers everyone's order every time, and service is always prompt!! A good staple if you're seeking quick, easy Thai food. Portions here are larger than at other restaurants in the area, which is nice. The drunken noodles are very spicy, and will probably irritate your stomach, even if they taste good in your mouth. Still, I would say the drunken noodles here taste better than anything else -- the pad thai is pretty bland, and the fried rice is not really worth it for the price -- not much egg, and not much protein either. The ambiance here is relatively nice, but the servers aren't particularly friendly, and if you're eating out and seeking Thai food there are definitely better options in town. I have the coconut shrimp which actually was excellent and the sauce was as well. I'm not sure why so many people to try the hot and sour soup because it taste like hot water with hot sauce and there was 1/4 of a tomato just cut into 2/2's and a handful of raw regular steak mushrooms. They advertised fresh vegetables but people don't usually eat half of a tomato almost and a bunch of mushrooms. Despite the name of the restaurant being Pad Thai, the pad thai is only average - I prefer the drunken noodle. Pretty standard Thai fare, the noodle dishes are probably your best bet here. What a wonderful gem in the heart of New Haven! I would've never found this place if it wasn't for my Yale Alumni. The moment I stepped foot into the restaurant I was captivated by the aroma coming from the kitchen and the beautiful decors. My friend had been raving about the Tom Yum Talay, and OMG I took one sip of the soup and fell in love with the dish. The soup was so authentic, flavorful, and had so many layers to it... I felt I was right in Thailand. I ordered my regular Thai dish, Drunken noodle, and I got to say I was not impressed by the presentation at all BUT my eyes widened with my first bite. Wow wow... the drunken noodle was mad amazing, the spices and flavors permeated throughout the whole dish, the texture and flavoring of the noodles was perfect. I couldn't help myself and inhaled the whole dish right then and there. I love Thai food and have been craving Thai food these past few months. I am blessed to be introduced to this wonderful gem.
