The pho was not the best pho i ever had, but it was very filling and delicious, definitely a great meal to chase away the winter chills. Can only comment on the duck noodle soup, which I literally gulped down in 10 minutes to the admiration of my friends. Please eat here! We've been multiple times and each time it was pretty empty--which might be why our food came so fast, so yay? Lol--but the food IS DELICIOUS and I would hate for them to leave because no one knows how good it is!! My husband is VERY picky about his food and he's said "that's delicious" about almost everything we've had. I've really only had the beef pho here and it has been the best I've had in New Haven. That's not to say that it's the best pho I've had...but it does the trick when I have a pho craving. My order took too long to process, then I finally got a message that it was out for delivery, then that my order was canceled because they couldn't contact me, THEN that it was canceled because the driver went to the restaurant and it was closed. Update: I've gone to this restaurant multiple times since I last went there, but many times the restaurant was closed unexpectedly. I get it if the place is closed on Monday, but being closed Mon-Wed, sometimes more, with just a hand-written sign on the door "closed today," is just not the way to do business. If you want GREAT Pho, go down the block a bit further, hop on the Metro-North and meet me in New York. If you want over-priced, decent Pho then go right in to Pho&Spice. I've been a couple times and had the Pho (dac biet, and the seafood), the Rangoon, the pork Bun, the bubble tea, and the specialty coffee. In all cases the portions were generous but under-seasoned, and I always ended up adding more condiments than I'd like to get the proper flavor balance. And given the quality (even with the quantity) prices seem exorbitant, $6 for tea? Really? All-in-all, I'd describe the food as "good enough" but nothing to write home about. Given New Haven's lack of Pho I guess this is technically the best in town... But that's really not saying much! I'll likely only ever go back if I get out-voted in a group decision. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! First off, the menu has so many dishes to choose from. Everyone's bound to find something they like. Second, the food is amazing! I always get something different and it's always delicious. Also, the price is really good, especially since the portions are pretty big. And third, the staff is very nice. They're polite, constantly checking up, and prepared to answer any questions you may have. I was a bit cautious coming here because of other reviews complain about the service, but ever since leaving the DC area, I've really missed being able to eat decent (or any!) pho. Since they *just* opened, though, I figured the conflicting reviews were a consequence of the restaurant being so new! This evening I came here for takeout, and the service was very prompt and very friendly. I didn't have to wait to place my order for two medium orders of pho tai and two Thai iced teas, and after they said it would be about 15 minutes for the pho (the tea arrived much sooner), it took less than 10 minutes for my food to be ready. The woman who brought me the pho even noticed that the two cups of tea weren't in a bag or anything, so she went back to get a to-go bag and packaged them up for me! The rest of the packaging is thoughtful but could be improved - they separate the broth from the beef, noodles, onions, and cilantro, and separate those from the rest of the toppings, all of which were fresh and plentiful. However, both of the containers of broth had lids that broke during my ~10 minute drive home, and I was already worried they'd spill during the drive. The other minor issue is that the location is a bit inconvenient, in the 1-way portion of Orange with little parking, but that's not really a huge deal. Though delivery isn't set up yet, in the future I'd probably opt for that over takeout to avoid these issues myself. Anyway, the food was delicious. Excellent broth, thin slices of beef, fresh ingredients, and fragrant herbs in the pho, and the Thai iced tea was sweet but not *overly* so, which I find rare. Waitstaff brought my partner's food out about 30 minutes after mine (after being asked several times) and were totally ambivalent to this lack of service giving with no explanation or apology. We ended up splitting both meals as to not let mine get ice cold before his came out (it took us about 15 minutes of waiting for his food to decide to do this though so mine was already getting cold). Unbearable! I drove pretty far to come to this place for a change of scenery from my usual spot. I just knew the soup had be great because of all of the stars everyone gave them. Let me begin by letting you know that I make Vietnamese food frequently and I have studied the Vietnamese cuisine culture. Summer rolls should not be hard and cold as the refrigerator. They should be made to order and soft. That's why they are often called "fresh rolls". Theirs were hard and made yesterday with browning around the edges of the iceberg lettuce. Between both rolls there wasn't even an entire shrimp and maybe one basil leaf. Shrimp should be sliced thinly to give the appearance of abundance, but can they spare a entire shrimp in this fancy place? They were chock full of Vermicelli. That's all the ingredients inside the roll. I picked at it and the peanut sauce was good. I ordered my usual, Pho Ga. She put it on the table without a word and didn't come back. It was as tasteless as it was fragrant-less and so very disappointing. Lots of rice noodles as mentioned in all the reviews which is not my favorite part of any Pho. I like broth with depth and lots of fresh herbs. This soup should always be served with mint and a jalapeño slice, just as French fries always have ketchup accompanying. I slurped up the boring broth and fished around for the chicken. Again, not even an ounce of chicken. Vietnamese food should not be loaded with protein. Pho is a noodle soup and I completely understand that is the culture behind the bowl. I don't need a ton of meat to be satisfied...but it was hard to find much in this bowl of water and noodles. My rolls went picked apart and uneaten. I left the noodles in the bowl which was 75% of the serving. Wouldn't you think the waitress would have asked if something was wrong with my meal? Especially how excited I was when I arrived. Nope! I didn't push it as I just wanted out of that, that...what ever it was!!!!! I don't need to get into how the service is here. It's easy to serve crappy pre-made food fast. *The Vietnamese coffee was excellent:) It was the first item I ordered and the last to arrive. They must have "made it" lol If you want outstanding 5 star Vietnamese food, go to "Saigon City" in Old Saybrook, CT. Afterwards, take a beautiful drive and loop around the scenic beaches. This was my go to for Vietnamese and Thai food since it opened a few years back. The Pho, pad see ew, pineapple fried rice, scallion pancakes, etc. were amazing and on par with the West Coast Asian food scene. Unfortunately today, under new management, the menu has been shortened (no more scallion pancakes) and the flavor profile was not even close to what the original was. The dac biet pho was bland and flavorless. No umami. The miso ramen pictured (relatively recent addition) had a coconut milk after taste and dry overcooked thin slices of meat. The same meat used on pho. Not charsiu pork like in traditional Japanese ramen. Service was extremely slow and it took a long time for the food to come out. Our waters remained empty without refills. People were coming up to ask for menus. Others got up and left before being able to place an order. While I used to think this was a place worthy of 4 stars when they operated under the original owner, I unfortunately am unable to find anything positive about this most recent experience. I feel like I will need to try it again in order to be fair. I was fighting a cold and needed some tasty soup. I tried the dumpling Pho with chicken and it was just ok in my opinion. The noodles dominated the soup and there were very few dumplings. The chicken was a little overcooked and overall the entire dish was just lacking a bit in flavor. I am certainly not a Pho expert but I was expecting much more flavor. I used to love the noodle soups at the old Bentara before it crashed and burned and this didn't hold a candle to those. The food is decent but the place it poorly managed. We went there one night and there was no wait staff! Literally the bus boy and the hostess were trying and failing to take orders. I ordered a Jack and Coke and they didn't seem to know what it was, but said OK. I reordered the same drink 3 times and they continued to say OK and I never got it. An incredible amount of confusion in taking orders. A properly run restaurant would make sure they were properly staffed or not open instead of forcing the low level help into a disaster. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with this new Vietnamese/Thai restaurant. Their menu has many authentic Vietnamese dishes so we figured that must be their forte and will try the Thai on another visit. We ordered the pho dac biet, bun bo hue and a number of appetizers. The broth for both dishes were decent and satisfying. The portions were generous and fairly priced. My only minor qualm is that the noodles used for the bun bo hue were unauthentic (used pho noodles when it should be thicker rice noodles). This meal thoroughly satisfied our craving and left us full. While these dishes understandably do not match that found in Orange County, CA, we concluded that they are on par or even better than some of our regular Vietnamese restaurants in the NYC Chinatowns. Given the paucity of Vietnamese food in New Haven, we hope to return regularly. read more

My wife and I have traveled the state in search of good bowl of Pho. We have sampled many and this is one of the tops. The broth is delicious and layered, subtle yet flavorful. "THIS WILL CHANGE MY LIFE" to quote my professor who brought the opening of New Haven's pho restaurant to my attention. Granted, this place isn't as amazing as some Bay Area pho places I know (but then again, you can't compare to California) but it's as good as it gets around here. Delicious broth that didn't leave my stomach feeling upset later like some pho places do, lots of bean sprouts and cabbage (never saw cabbage before) and mint, and tasty less generic crushed chili sauce. Friendly service and ambient atmosphere that kicks the butt of some noisier, dirtier pho places. A bit less meat in the bowls than I'm used to, but still quite filling. Especially since the "small" is larger than you'd think. Also, it'd be nice if they provided cilantro :). read more
