Quaint little mom 'n' pop shop, seats about 30. It needs a good cleaning, but otherwise not too bad. It's close to a lot of shopping places, so it's a convenient place to stop for dinner after shopping. I love the decor pictures that are made of abalone shells. Very pretty! The food gets a solid 3 stars. Service is okay as well.

A dingy but surprisingly good Pho place along a part of Rupert nobody ever stops at. Parking is available along Rupert, as well as the side streets. The inside looks like someone's living room. That's how one can tell the place is the real deal. It appears to be a mom and pop type shop. Service was decent, and the staff were friendly. The spring rolls were nice and crunchy, but not fluffy. The skin is more like Chinese style. They were super hot so we had to wait a bit. The beef steak and beef ball pho had a nice thin but heavy soup. Served with green onion and a some red onion slices on top. Beautiful. Pricing was fairly decent, and I left happy. I would be back. Recommended.

I really like that the pork rice dish that I ordered has mounds of shredded pork on it! Nice and simple. The fillings for the spring rolls were great but if only the skin had used the traditional rice type rather than the Chinese style one. It's a bit cramped in there as it is a small place but hey, it's nice and cozy that we get quick service.

Awesome hole in the wall/ dive Vietnamese Pho House. This place is super small, really cramped and the decor is absolutely horrid. In this case though, all of that stuff is negated by the awesome food and really good prices! Really, you only go here for the great food and good service, everything else is inconsequential for the tasty grub you get. I usually go for the Pho or soups, but I hear their sandwiches are awesome too. I'll have to try one the next time I come here. Out of all the Vietnamese Pho places I've been too, this place by far has the best soup base for their Pho noodles. It's tasty, savory, authentic and fresh. They add a lot of cilantro as well, which I absolutely love in almost anything. Today I ordered the small no. 1 beef house special with rice noodles. It came with a mix of different cuts of beef, beef balls, and various other things that most westerners wouldn't dream of eating like tendons, tripe (stomach lining/ intestines) and other various deliciousness. I usually get a spring role as well, but I'm trying to cut down on how much food I consume per day, which in the past was an extraordinary amount and probably still is today. To go with my Pho, I ordered a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, just the thing to pick you up! (Who needs coffee?!?!?). I will for sure eat here often, when I'm in the mood for some hole in the wall, cheap, awesomely good pho! St3Fin

I love this place but warning they are cash only. (But there's a BMO just a couple doors down) and note that they generally close by 8pm. This is my fourth or fifth time having food here including takeout. Every single time to date the food has been amazing and tasty. Being a bit of a hole in the wall and not English as a first language it's a surprisingly reliable feel-good place. Today I am having #35 shredded pork and deep fried spring rolls on vermicelli with assorted veggie $7.95, hot tea and a #96 Vietnamese coffee with sweetened condensed milk with ice to use with it once it's done brewing. The last time I came it was just after I moved Nov 1/13 so I walked my small dog here (one way took 30 minutes) it was worth it. I ordered a salad roll to eat on the go (which amazed them) and a similar to today soup. Even the options without broth are great although I wish they would use a lime wedge over lemon-it's still delectable.

Service was so bad! The server was super unfriendly and when I ordered the special Banh Mi he seemed disappointed (maybe because it was cheaper than theirs soups?) The taste of the Banh Mi was just OK and the pate wasn't spread properly at all and there was not enough pickled vegetables on it. Wouldn't return because of the service. I can get a better Banh Mi downtown. Even though the price is pretty good.

I hated the Pho, but the Bahn Mi is pretty good. The Pho Ga soup looked all yellow, and it also tasted like Top Ramen. The noodles were fine, but I couldn't finish it. The sandwiches were better. I like the meatball one the best. They have a few cooks in the back, and one lady as the cashier/waitress. Not once was she friendly. After I went to get take-out sandwiches a few times, she told me to call head of time, probably to make clear that I was in the way waiting around. I haven't been back since, because it was a "hey, we're driving by; let's get some sandwiches" kind of place. For us, it's not quite worthy of being a planned-ahead destination.

My go-to pho place for a few reasons: 1) it's close to home and super convenient to get to; 2) it's run by the most humble and hard working guy - he used to work at a local grocery store, helping my mom carry out her groceries and boxes of yams that she would buy; 3) his family uses the best ingredients. Nothing beats mom's homemade pho broth but she doesn't make it often; and this place comes pretty close. The broth doesn't leave you as thirsty as some of the other chains or Vietnamese restaurants in the city. Always good portion sizes and the bowls come out piping hot! Small restaurant but definitely worth a try!

Pho Nhuan is a really small family run hole in the wall restaurant, it can be easy to miss when you drive by. I would say we've had better Pho in the city, but prices are so cheap so it's really hard to complain. Both broth and noodles were solid, and one of the few restaurants that provide chillies. The spring rolls were very good, I think we liked it better than the pho itself. As others have mentioned, service is pretty much non-existent here, but the food and prices are good enough where we would come back.

The guy in front of me, Deng, looked at me with such envy as he cut in line. This place is incredibly popular! Every time I pass by, there's a long queue. Even on rainy days, people are willing to get soaked in the rain just to have a bowl of hot tonkotsu ramen. While you're queuing, the staff will hand out menus. The ordering system is similar to Ichiran Ramen; you can choose the noodle firmness, broth consistency, spiciness, green onions, oil level, and MSG amount . The basic ramen is only $13. I added a soft-boiled egg and pickled cabbage for $2 each. Although the pickled cabbage is really expensive , I can't help it, I'm a pickled cabbage addict! The pickled cabbage paired with the rich tonkotsu broth was refreshing. The broth was flavorful but not greasy, the noodles were chewy and springy, and the portion size was just right. Overall, it's incredibly good value for money; no wonder there's always a queue. After eating, you really get that "Ah~ this is the taste of happiness" feeling

I had the goma vegetarian and my brother the tonkatsu. We both had thicker noodles. However, one could not tell. The vegetarian was loaded with sesame seeds. Now i love those seeds but it was way too much for my liking. Too much seeds to chew on. They also do not put any vegetables on like Hawaii does. Everything is ala carte and that adds up. I simply chose the ramen version without all the add ons. The broth was yummy but again with the loaded seeds, it made it challenging to just drink the soup. I will say, Hawaii has by far better ramen, but this place was ok too. Pricey for for what you get though.

I…read moredecided to check it out for dinner, mostly to check it off my list of Japanese restaurants to try. As a transit user, It's conveniently located across the street from chinatown stadium skytrain station. I like that it opens a bit later until 10pm so i can go there after an evening movie at international village a 5 minute walk away. There was basically no queue to order so i was able to order as soon as i walked into the restaurant. I told the staff i was a first time customer and asked what was the most popular dish, and they said number 5 which is the nikutama udon. It comes with sweet beef, BK sauce, and onsen eggs on top of thick udon noodles. The braised sweet beef was alright in terms of flavor and it definitely hit the spot. It's by far the best ingredient in the udon. I had never tried onsen eggs before, and I didn't really care for them. It's basically eggs that were cooked slowly at a low temperature. The texture and appearance is unusual in my opinion. i thought the nikutama udon overall was pretty good and it has unique flavors and ingredients. It's not amazing but I can understand why people love the unique BK sauce's flavors. There's not many customization options but you can get the dish served hot or cold, and you can choose to get a regular version or larger version for only $1.50 more. There's apparently a lot of hype around the BK sauce but i didn't find it that great. It has a unique combination of salty, sweet, and smoky flavors. The portion size is a little smaller than i prefer so i'd definitely get the large size. But i think most people will find the regular size just fine. I was able to eat my whole dish within 5-7 minutes and im not a person that wolfs down their meal quickly. Price-wise, the cost of their udon is fair. They are around $12-13. Slightly cheaper than other ramen places. The tempura add-ons are expensive in my opinion but I saw lots of folks buying them anyways. At the time, other ramen places like Kinton Ramen had a $15 set meal, which I thought was a better deal because it came with a special summer drink and gyoza. I wish Marugame's nikutama udon had something like this. Like adding a choice of a couple tempura and a drink for a similar price. The dining area was a little smaller than expected because half of it was closed at the time. But I was still able to find a seat at the counter where i could eat my dish. They don't use a wait staff but it's cafeteria style where you get the food at the counter and bring your dish to the table, and bring it back to the cleaning area yourself. I like that you can get your own water at a tap, napkins, utensils, and cups too instead of asking for them at the counter. The dining area was pretty clean and spacious. Overall, I give Marugame 4 stars out of 5. You should definitely check it out at least once if you are a fan of Japanese udon. Try the nikutama udon with BK sauce and see if you'll like it too.

There is the ordering area after you enter and the seating area to the left. Then you move left where you can self-serve the tempura items, and then pay at the cashier. Utensils, sauces, and water are off to a counter in the seat area, and there's a return area to bring back your empty bowls/trays. Not super busy when we got there on a weekend night, but filled up as an event at BC Place was ending. We got the beef udon with the classic soup, the beef rice bowl that has the runny egg, the chicken katsu curry udon, and a few tempura items. My favorite was definitely the curry udon, since the curry soup/sauce had more flavor. Out of the fried items, the shrimp tempura is delicious, and the zucchini tempura has a nice sweetness to it. Udon noodles were pretty good, has a nice solid texture to them. Overall bill was $50ish for 3 people. And since this is basically fast food, you don't necessarily have to tip.

The gentleman (owner?) greeted us and provided us with some suggestions on their best sellers. I ordered the beef noodle soup, and the noodles were prepared well (good texture and not soggy) and the soup had a slight but not overwhelm sour taste from the preserved vegetables. The beef wasn't as tender as it could be, but it wasn't chewy or tough to eat. Prices are reasonable at around $20 after tax and tips. So if you cannot take spicy food, check with them before ordering. The beef noodle soup is tasty as I do like the addition of pickled vegetables in it, giving a bit of tartness. The beef is tender though the quantity is very little. More noodles than meat ratio. The combo is totally not worth it now that the price has gone up to about $13. If you want rice and noodle for lunch, I think Peaceful Restaurant across the street is a better bet. At least the portion is bigger.
