On May 1st, my parents and I stopped in to Pho America for dinner because my mom wanted pho. In the end, she did not order pho because my dad would not agree to share it with her (he wanted a noodle dish, haha). She ended up getting a noodle salad bowl with chicken, my dad had the beef with vegetables and chow mein-style noodles, and I ordered stir-fry veggies with chicken and steamed rice. The young man who tended to us was very patient and friendly - such a change in service from the last time we were here. We were able to request exactly how we wanted something made (for example, my mom described more or less what she was craving, and he pointed her to two different options she could choose from. And I wanted my stir-fry dish on the drier side, not too much sauce). The food came out fresh and delicious. Only minor complaint was that the chicken in my mom's noodle salad was a bit over-cooked on the exterior which made it hard for her to chew at times. She really enjoyed the combination of the veggies, greens, noodles and the dressing too. Honestly one of my favorite dishes - I will have to try it from here someday. I loved my chicken stir-fry with veggies. The white rice was perfectly fluffy. I would order this dish again! At the end, our server brought us little cups of a green tapioca pudding. I believe it's made with pandan or some type of neutral-tasting bean. It's sweetened though, and it was honestly a nice little touch, compliments of the house. He did express that the restaurant was working on some changes to get customers back and reviews back to a more satisfactory level, and I applaud them for that. But this modest establishment has friendly staff and decent pho at an affordable price. My local friend and I got the Pho Tai + Spring Roll Special Lunch or Dinner Special. I don't remember - but it's basically the same, where the Dinner is $1 more. I think their pho isn't too bad. I was having a pho craving today so I decided to try Pho America for takeout. I ordered the rare steak pho and it was a good size and the meat was nice and tender. All the fixings came packed up in a bag with sauces and lime. I thought the flavor was good and definitely generous on the noodles. The inside of the restaurant wasn't anything fancy and could probably use a little more cleaning but some of the best pho places I've been to have been a little questionable haha. Pho America had a BOGO deal for their rare steak pho on Ubereats so I knew I had to give this place a shot. I also ordered a few sides of chili oil as well as a side of chicken for myself. Once the order arrived, I re-heated my broth and was ready to dig in. After the first few bites I pushed my plate away and felt super underwhelmed with my dish. The broth was greasy and bland. The chicken was unappetizing and was nearly inedible as it consisted of mostly chewy tendons. My mom got the other soup that came with the promotion and she didn't eat her pho either as she said it didn't taste good. Overall, "you get what you pay for" has never made more sense to me. The service was honestly so poor it felt almost comical. The woman working this afternoon came off as awkwardly rude. she didn't greet me or say a single word when approaching my table. She simply handed me a menu and stood there staring, which made the whole interaction feel incredibly uncomfortable. Shortly after, a man asked me to move from a two-top to a four-top, saying the area was reserved for large parties. The restaurant was nearly empty at the time, only a few guests were dining, with plenty of open seating, so the request felt unnecessary and odd. I got a regular size pho and should have gotten a big bowl, smh. Don't make the same mistake as I did and get yourself the biggest bowl they got. You won't regret it! We pass by here all the time when coming from Signal Hill/Bixby Knolls back to DTLB, but truth be told, the name kinda turned me off (reminded me of a mall food court 'Asian' fast food shop with non-Asian workers)...but nope, Pho America is the real deal....serving up a good, piping bowl of beef pho. They have their own dedicated parking lot (with lockable gates), and the standalone building has plenty of indoor seating. There were already quite a few people dining in, when I stopped by around 11 on a Monday. I noticed that there was quite a few take-out and delivery orders as well, so good sign for the freshness of the ingredients. I was led to my seat, and placed an order for the combination pho, size large ($15). The hostess/waitress was attentive, and brought out a glass of water with lemon pretty quickly, along with the pho accompaniments that everyone is accustomed (really fresh bean sprouts, thai basil, jalapeno slices, and two lime wedges). Everything was super fresh, obviously just washed and sprinkled with water to keep vibrant. Strangely, a lot of pho places around this hot bed of Pho restaurants, serve mediocre, browned herbs. Not here...this was great, and a good clue for the quality of the rest of the meal. The steaming bowl came out a bit after, delivered directly from the kitchen by someone else (probably the gentleman who put the dish together). The bowl wasn't overly large, and everything was submerged under the piping hot broth (except for the sliced white onions and cilantro floating)...noticed immediately that it was pretty oily (which usually isn't a good thing for me). Took my first sip, acknowledged that it didn't need any more sauce just some herbs and fresh lime juice which I added. Each table already has utensils at each table, including forks if that is what you need. The noodles were clumped at the bottom, but a couple of twirls with one chopstick, then letting it sit for about a minute or so, then I really dug in. And it really came together...none of the separate ingredients stood out individually, but together, it ended up making a really, really good bowl of pho. It came with the requisite meats (really enjoyed the fatty brisket, and small amount of tripe....the rare steak wasn't great, but the tendon and beef balls were solid). By the time I was finished with the noodle, I still had broth left so asked for an extra order of noodles ($3 or so)...which was soon delivered in its own broth. I devoured that too. I paid at the front...they take credit card but offer a small cash discount. In/out in 40 minutes...still a little hungry, but happy that I had been wrong about the name and could add another good pho place to my list of rotating noodle shops. read more

My friend suggested this place for a gathering. Based on the other reviews, we both selected pho, but I also ordered the Vietnamese swai spring roll as an appetizer. The amount of noodles in a regular size bowl was significantly more than most of the pho establishments I've been to--at least twice as much. The broth was pretty good, but not the best I've had. The condiments were fresh, and there were plenty of steak and tendon in the bowl. I love how tender the tendon was. The spring roll was surprisingly good. Each roll was huge, and the rice wrap was chewy in a good way. The fish taste really came through. The staff was friendly, but he's on his phone most of the time while we were there. It was a slow Wednesday evening at the restaurant. I was sick and I didn't have the energy to make chicken noodle soup so I thought about getting pho. I heard that pho had some type of healing qualities so I ordered some to-go. I ordered the grilled chicken pho because I wanted chicken noodle soup. It's basically the same thing but Asian. It was my first time having chicken pho, but let me tell you! It was fire! The chicken was nice and juicy, and has flavor from being grilled. The broth was clean and the taste was there. Definitely not watered down at all. Cured my sickness for sure. I've driven by here a lot over the years and never got a chance to check it out until a couple nights ago with a friend and her son. So, I love getting any combination pho. That means "the works" = all the meat! Food is about texture and taste for me. You can't taste the tripe, tendons, etc... but I love the texture! There is free ample parking which is such a bonus. The inside dining area is larger than I expected with plenty of seating, but the tables are a bit small for a party of 5, and too big for two tables to be pushed together (which they were willing to do). We squeezed into one table with 5 chairs and we were fine. Their menu is extensive and it's hard to decide what to order. I settled on an egg noodle soup with cornish game hen. The hen was juicy and flavorful and tiny. But it's small, a tiny leg and breast (and hens are small) so keep your expectations realistic with that so you don't over inflate your imagination like I am sometimes prone to. In looks large in pictures (even mine) though. Now the soup itself did not pack as much flavor. I did, however, add some hot sauce & hoisin provided at the table to give it more depth. But I felt the noodles didn't have that special kick or taste I wanted or expected. Their Pho is good although if you have a big appetite, order the large because the small size is that. At other places, a small always looks larger than one would expect, but here, the sizes are what it is. They have an assortment of sweet drinks and boba and those are good additions to round out the meal. The service is interesting. They're friendly, don't get me wrong, but it's a bit awkward sometimes. They use a computer pad to take orders (instead of pad and paper) and it's slow so while you're ordering, the server will say, "wait...the computer is slow" so you're kind of awkwardly waiting until he's ready for the next person. We giggled (you know, that uncomfortable giggle you share with your loved ones when you all know how each other feels LOL). We were done with our meal and they never came to give us a check so I got up to the cashier and she rang me up. There was a notice on our wall that they offer student discounts so I told her we were with two college students and she asked for student ids. As my boys were digging theirs out (their digital now), she said, "it's okay, I gave it to them.". Alrighty. Again, the interaction wasn't rude, but it was...well...different. Like I said, not unfriendly, but not we'll-go-out-of-our-way either. And it's fine. Also, if you prefer a fork instead of chopsticks, they do have forks on a self-serve table near the cashier area, along with extra napkins. The meat in every dish was really fatty and inconsistent. Some pieces were tough. Some were literally just fat. I like fat, but it was too much. Some of the vegetables were wilted. Very unappetizing. Feels: The surroundings is not your touristy Long Beach spot. The restaurant itself is nice. A family business, work hard vibe, with warming Vietnamese customs. There are tvs playing in the background. Good spot for family or pleasant comfort food. FOOD: Pho House Special (Recommend) Steak, beef-ball, tendon, flank tripe...the works. The broth was flavorful and the meats were delicious. It was pretty fulfilling and lasted us two meals. Banh Mi - Grilled Pork (Recommend) A Vietnamese sandwich the classic sweet pork flavoring. Juicy meat and refreshing cilantro. Not as crispy or smokey as I hoped but still comforting. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Awesome.
