I've been coming to this place for over 30 years -- it was my family's go-to spot for Chinese food. My brothers wanted their favorite dishes tonight, but after today, we will not be going back. They overcharged us, and when we pointed it out, they got upset. The cashier even opened our plate and said there was "too much chow mein," then removed a huge amount of noodles from the plate we had already paid for. My brothers didn't realize how much was taken out until they got home -- it was half the plate. I called right away and told them we would be returning the food. When we got there, they refunded us but still had an attitude -- but that wasn't even the worst part. What do you think they did with the food we returned? China Chef has been mine & my fam's go-to for Chinese food for as long as I can remember. I have plenty of great memories of coming here with my grandparents when I was a little girl. The veggie egg rolls are the best I've had and I'm a sucker for their fried rice and orange chicken. Well, I really hate to say this but there's a reason I haven't been here in a long time. The last time my mom stopped by to get some food she noticed one of the cooks had came back from the restroom while still wearing gloves. A family in front of her called him out on it and ended up walking out of the line. The cook gave a confused look and proceeded to walk back into the kitchen while still wearing the same gloves. This story has since left me conflicted and I haven't had Chinese food in well over a year now since I don't know any other good Chinese take-out spots in LB. The cleanliness of this establishment has scared me straight to the point where I've removed this spot from my usual rotation. This sucks because I truly loved the food from China Chef but I can't eat a combo from here in good conscience while knowing that the food might still be prepared in an unsanitary manner. I dislike leaving negative reviews but I can only be honest, especially when it comes down to the cleanliness of the food that's being served to the public. Overall, the food is and has always been great but restaurant/staff have proven to be unsanitary. Eat at your own discretion. This spot used to be my family's go-to before we moved out of the city a few years ago. On a recent visit back to LBC, I was craving it again and decided to stop by. Like most people have mentioned, prices have definitely gone up--but honestly, a $12 plate isn't terrible, especially since one plate can comfortably feed two people depending on their appetite. Just make sure to bring cash, since they don't accept cards, Apple Pay, or tap. I ordered chow mein, house special chicken, and mushroom chicken. The chow mein really hit the spot! It's more like stir-fried noodles rather than the thicker, orange-tinted style you usually see at fast Chinese takeout places. I love their version, even if it's a bit on the oily side. As for the meats, the flavors were solid, but a lot of the chicken was chewy and oily. I almost tried the spicy chicken, but it turned out to be drumsticks with skin sitting in what looked like a spiced broth, which didn't seem appealing. The veggies in my order were great--saucy, well stir-fried, and cooked to that perfect balance of soft and crunchy. First time here: Large amount of food, good taste, a lot of places to sit. We came for lunch on a Friday, after stopping at the close-by Kaiser-Permanente Long Beach office. The menu is clearly shown, and whatever food is available, are the choices you have. They do seem to have a side order section where you can order things like Mongolian beef or shrimp fried rice. All the classics were there: my wife usually share a combo at other places, so did the same thing here: one egg roll, orange chicken, broccoli beef, on top of mix of fried rice and noodles, for $11.50 (free small drink). The nice lady scooped the food into carry-out container, put it into a plastic bag for transport. Then we paid (only cash accepted here), and found a place to sit. They don't ask if dine-in/carry out since everything gets packaged in the carryout plastic containers, and because there is no option for 3 items, no need for a separate container. They will basically fill up the clam shell container with enough food so it shuts, but no air between. We ate inside in one of the booths, and the food was good. Orange chicken sauce had decent white meat chicken with a very tangy, orange sauce...got pretty soggy. The broccoli beef was good too...very fresh broccoli pieces, chopped and cooked well, and the beef wasn't too mushy. The egg roll was crispy, but little flavor. I used to love coming here a few years back because of their fried chicken. It's very delicious but can get a bit to salty if your mouth is dry. Their choices of food selection are not bad either. There are so many to choose from. They can get pretty busy but not that busy, dont let the line stretch from the outside fool you. Just how they set up their food stations cause people stand outside. Simple tactics to get this place looking busy if you were to drive by and saw a line from the outside. This place needs to be better by using the back space for line formation instead of storage space. Looks so unsanitary for a business that's been operating for a couple of decades now. Dont get me wrong, business doing pretty good, actually. But would be grateful if they invest something into the business to give back to the consumer. Simple upgrades wouldn't hurt. I honestly cannot believe that this spot has as high of a review as it does. I went once and that was one too many times and I will never give this spot another chance. I was craving a mom and pop greasy Panda Express experience and thought by the number of people I saw waiting in line and the "Cash Only" sign, that this spot was going to be epic. Well it definitely wasn't.... at least not epic in a good way. After I ordered my food from the assembly line, I noticed a couple flies enjoying the food while it was being scooped into styrofoam containers and the rest of this eatery didn't seem like the cleanest. Here are a few things I'd like to note: -this place is CASH only -lines get pretty long around dinner time, so anytime before four is when you wanna go -Pay attention to the workers when your plate is being filled. When you have order multiple plates, they can accidentally mix up your plates or give the wrong entrees. Checking your order is essential -Lately, it has been a bit more inconsistent. Some days, the food is very flavorful and other days can be really bland. No way to tell -if you get combos with no drink, they will substitute for an extra eggroll -tons of options and variety with the entrees - a few of my favorite items would have to be chop suey, fried chicken (crispy and salty), and the mushroom dish -great portion sizes, definitely enough for three meals Regardless, I always recommend this spot to my friends. read more

First time here and definitely not the last. This place has is very generous with there plate combo meaning they give you a lot for a cheap price and the food taste delicious. I'm really picky when it comes to fast-food because sometimes it's a hit or miss. The noodles are delicious, not too saucy or oily. The flavor is great. As for the fried rice it has this weird texture taste to it, I wonder if it's a healthy type of rice but I wasn't really a fan of it. They give you 2 veggie egg rolls and they are really great. The beef broccoli was tender and savory. The orange chicken was tender and had a grey amount of flavor on it. My mom chose to go here at 9:20pm today out of all places because their fried chicken. So as we went, we notice a homeless man getting in line and we gave him a few extra bucks to eat. Side note, they do give free samples so try the meat. I'm sure they throw out all the leftover food for the day and make fresh food the next day! The combo comes with an egg roll and a small drink for $9.95. The total was $25 and some change and of course we tipped. And they really pack that box pretty well! Food is pretty yummy. You can really taste the orange in the orange chicken. The beef and broccoli ratio was great compared to other Chinese food places where it's mostly broccoli. The beef had good sized pieces too. I got a 2 item combo for $10.50 not bad compared to other Chinese food places that use smaller containers and cost about $3.00 more. I've been here since I was a kid, I would come here on my lunch breaks from high school, now I bring my kids and I love that you can order for catering. I prefer the chow mein noodles over the rice. Their protein choice has a variety to choose from. The fried chicken wings and sweet saucy wings are fire, as in delicious!
