Northern Cafe is one of the few well known Chinese/Dumplings spots in LA & OC area where I know it's going to be delicious every single time. Each restaurant is ready for your bestie meet up, date night or a huge family gathering. On top of that, love the price point and portions. Did you know their dumplings are made fresh everyday ? The steamed XLBs, pan fried dumplings, wontons, steamed baos, boiled dumplings... all of it made fresh! Their lunch specials are also a great deal too! That includes the weekend too! Plus they got all the items you can find at Din Tai Fung with larger portions and little wait.

Northern Cafe was delicious. Service was quick, food was phenomenal, drinks were strong. Definitely something for everyone here. The space is beautiful inside too!

Northern Cafe is the kind of place where the food is so good, you start comparing it to din tai fun. The pork and crab soup dumplings? Elite. Like "burn-your-mouth-but-still-go-back-in" good. And then you add beef rolls, beef fried noodles, orange chicken--suddenly your table looks like you're hosting a family reunion you didn't plan. It's casual, loud, always packed basically controlled chaos with dumplings. It's a great place for casual dining--whether you're with family or friends--and the 2nd Street location keeps things lively... like "hope you like noise with your noodles" lively. There's indoor and outdoor seating, so you can choose between cozy chaos inside or people-watching outside while pretending you didn't just order way too much food. Come hungry, bring friends, and be prepared to say, "okay THIS is the last dish"... at least three times. -seafood fried rice $19 -beef fried noodles $15 -orange chicken $15 -beef roll $14 -pork dumpling $14 -steamed shrimp dumpling $15 -steamed seafood dumpling $16 -walnut shrimp $19 -sichuan boiled fish $16 -garlic shrimp $19

Came in again today with my daughter and it was just as good as yesterday's lunch! Crystal was super nice and attentive. We tried a few different items and we enjoyed everything! I'm super down with the Dan Dan Noodles. See you again soon!!

This place has been on my list for the longest time so when my husband and I were in the area and looking for a food spot I'm so glad we decided on this one. There's plenty of seating inside and out and oh my goodness, the food is freaking delicious! Our server was also a gem of a man! He was seemingly doing it all in the front end up of the restaurant - getting to go orders, serving our food, refilling our drinks, constantly checking on us. I didn't get his name, I wish I would've so I could properly sing praises for him. We got a little bit of everything and I don't think you could ever go wrong here. My husband and I usually rate things by our favorite to least favorite but we couldn't because everything was truly our favorite. The green onion pancake was super crispy and I loved dipping it into the chili oil that came with the chicken wontons. Also the noodles were flavorful and the veggies were cooked just right and sauce for the pot stickers was amazing - it was like a creamy soy sauce. I can't wait to come back here - still dreaming of the delicious food we had.

Went here on a Friday night and it was amazing. I sat outside when the weather was nice and enjoyed not only the food, but the people watching lol. This place is located at almost the end of 2nd street and sits right in between a new açaí spot and a sushi place. To drink I ordered the lychee sangria. It was so pretty and packs a powerful punch. Be sure to mix it because all the sweetness sat at the bottom of the glass. It was refreshing and not too heavy. To eat, I ordered the beef pancake and that thing was sooooo juicy. Just from the outside you would not think that all that soup was in there but as soon as I cut into it you just see all this nice broth coat the plate. 1 order came with 2 pancakes. It came with a ginger? Sauce and it was amazing. I put some chili sauce on top of it and of course the black vinegar. The second thing that I ordered was the chicken chili dumplings and OMG can't go wrong with it. The meat to actual wrapper ratio was perfect. It was steamed perfectly, meaning that the meat was tender and the wrapper was not gummy at all. 10/10 would recommend. Service was amazing. There were plenty of folks working and they were all so attentive! Especially on a Friday night when total madness could ensue.

Been wanting to try this place for some time now and glad I finally got to! As soon as I was sat, the place got packed. Customer service was kind and my server also happened to be my bartender. Come to think of it- I only noticed two servers for the whole place, but they had everything handled despite the high volume of customers that were sat right after one another. The spot itself Is quite spacious, ample seating. The booth was a little uncomfortable for my back but otherwise ok. I got the blackberry matcha mojito and it was delicious, it had sake in it. For the food, I was a bit disappointed in the shrimp dumplings. I guess I was expecting better quality ? It also came with some type of brown sauce which I couldn't tell what it was, a bit sour- I didn't love it. The chive scallion pancake was veryyyy crispy very fried but alas it was tasty. The garlic green beans WERE 10/10!!! Obsessed. I'd come back just for that and a drink.

Another nice place on second street. We went for lunch and they had a great lunch menu with many options. I tried the beef rolls which were basically pancakes with beef and green onion and lettuce with a dip sauce. They were delicious. We ordered some dumplings and we should have gotten them pan fried as they were just boiled. Great outdoor patio and great service. Very knowledge server that seemed to have tried many of the items on the menu. It felt like a bit overpriced food but definitely worth trying.

Ambiance, service and food was on point! I ordered chicken wontons in chili oil (8 pieces) $13.50 Flavor flavor FLAVOR! They were juicy and packed with equal amount of ingredients top tier! These wontons are big too. The chili oil is perfect topped with chopped green onions a refreshing combo. All tables come with condiments such as chili oil, vinegar and soy sauce. I personally like to add vinegar and chili oil FLAVOR! Staff was amazing and attentive THANK YOU Street parking only its on 2nd street so IYKYK I highly recommend

Always not busy for a great place, happy hours Mon-Sunday can't beat that. Sit outside for great people watching. Food order:shrimps chives pork steamed dumplings, pork in chili oil. Very flavorful, but services were kind of slow, for being not busy

Wonderful menu, a really good variety. Customer service was on top of it, every minute we were there. We did mention it was our first time. We ordered way too much, but hey who doesn't enjoy leftovers?! Even better the next day. We Mongolian beef, house fried rice, crunchy chicken, shrimp fried noodles, and pork dumplings in chili sauce. Every dish was family style, packed with flavor and fire. We enjoyed everything we tried. Highly recommended. We will definitely return!

Came here a few days ago with my friend . They have both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat on the patio because it was a perfect day to have a drink outside & people watch . Honestly, this place is so underrated every dish we tried was amazing such as the string beans. You must try the beef roll. It was so good. I packed it up to save it for later my friend, and I both tried the different noodles such as the golden beef soup, and the house special, which both were so delicious. Of course they're known for their dumplings so we had to try a few of them. My friend doesn't eat pork and they were able to accommodate which was lovely. They offer veggie and chicken in addition to the pork overall it was an amazing experience and the place was clean Service wise everyone was helpful and offer suggestions Thank you Crystal for your service. We will be back.

Came here on a Saturday around 11:30am. No wait to be seated. Service friendly. They had the happy hour for dumplings. Ordered the pork soup dumplings it was warm and good. The chili oil wontons it wasn't spicy at all but okay. My first drink had a few pieces of powered something but they were quick to exchange it. The wait to get the items was slow. All in all okay for price to taste.

Restaurant is packed, so place resos if possible. Food here is absolutely delicious. Notable dishes for me are the Pad See Ew with the giant shrimp and the Salmon Larb. Pad See ew had such a good wok fry essence. So flavorful, and perfect blend of savory and slight sweetness. Chinese broccoli nicely wok fried. The shrimp was jumbo and so succulent. Salmon Larb was perfectly cooked with fried cubes of juicy flavorful salmon. Tossed in fresh mint, cilantro, scallions, a ton of fresh lime juice, chili flakes, red onions and lettuce. The toasted rice powder was definitely apparent as every Larb dish should have. Slightly different take of Larb, bit more modernized and tweaked cause definitely a salad with the lettuce versus served with the cabbage and cucumber on the side. I don't think you can go wrong with what you order. Definitely fusion of authentic with a modernized American feel. Cocktails were excellent and recommend their Tamarind Spicy drink, don't remember the name but it was so good. Unfortunately no photos cause we weee hungry and just cleared out the food as it came out. Service is straight forward. We got what we needed with a bit wait due to the fact the place is BUSY!

Dan Modern Chinese has indoor & outdoor seating, and we came on a weekday around 7:15PM. It wasn't crowded at all & the hostess let us pick to sit wherever we wanted. Typically we understand when it's busy if the servers cannot drop by our table for an introduction, but it was lowkey kind of a long time before our server even came to greet or give waters. To the point where we almost walked out (we couldn't flag anyone down & no one looked our way). We ordered Mapo Tofu w/Crab, Xiao Long Bao's, Pickled Cucumbers, Scallion Pancake, Fried Dumplings. Everything tasted super yummy, my favorite was the scallion pancake bc it was on the crispy side!! We'd love to come back again and try and hopefully have better service. Bc the food is super delicious and made up for the lack thereof in service.

I wanted to find out if this spot was as good as I had remembered it. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I was practically disappointed by two out of the three dishes. Two of them that should've been the best. I'll start out with the Mongolian beef. There was plenty of meat and onions and green onions, but there was no kick to it, not the greatest flavor either. It was also a little watery, which was a major letdown for me. I was really looking forward to enjoying it with the white rice that came with it. Next up was the chicken chow mein. I was expecting to have long noodles in its to go box but when I was eating it, it was small noodle cuts. That was a bit shocking for me. It also didn't have a lot of great flavor, and again I was let down. I did get vegetable fried rice, because who could actually screw that up. It was the best dish out of the three. Not a ton of flavor in it but enough for me to actually enjoy it. I tried using the leftover chow mein by putting it in a skillet and adding a few spices and oils. It improved it just a little bit, but not enough. Clearly, I can't go back here. It's like they say: buy cheap get cheap.

She did not let me down as we walked in and noticed how truly authentic it was going to look. Chinese decor on the walls and boxes of restaurant supples in the corners. Just as it should be. The bonus was that they had a TV showing the NBA Finals when we arrived. Pretty nice touch and in the back of the restaurant so as not to distract everyone. We went with a couple of our favorite dishes to run along and the Chicken Lo Mein was pretty good. Crispy pieces of chicken and soft noodles and veggies to go with it. We chose to get Mongolian Beef and it was absolutely fantastic. Crispy celery, green onions and decent sized pieces of meat in a terrific sauce. I would love to try to replicate that. My wife wanted a shrimp dish so she ordered the honey walnut and it even looked good to me when they brought it. She loves egg rolls, so she got a four piece and said they were pretty good. My biggest wow of the visit was their vegetable fried rice. MY GOD. I dont know what they season or flavor it with, but every fork full of rice that i ate, it was this sense of flavor that reminded me of butter or something else. If it's busy, it can feel pretty cramped, and you'll probably have to squeeze between tables and chairs to get around. If it's not crowded though, it's much easier to move around. He wasn't very friendly and kind of just set the plates down wherever there was space, even on top of the plates we were already using.
