This last visit we ordered: -chicken xiao long bao/soup dumplings -popcorn shrimp -short rib dan mein - shrimp fried rice My family, kids included, demolished these dishes. So incredibly tasty, piping hot, good sized portions. The service is always really attentive and the whole 2nd and PCH area is such a cool ambiance. After this visit, I honestly think this may be one of my top 5 favorite restaurants. Overall this is a good option should you leave the likes of Din Ta Fung but can't make the drive. Decent XLB, cucumbers were perfectly crisp and refreshing, the Short rib noodles were awesome, and the crab fried rice had a good amount of crab meat. Service was OK. First time visiting this restaurant even though they have a few chain location. Interior was nice, clean and cozy. But it took a looong time before the server came by to take our order (the restaurant wasn't even that busy) Got the usual dishes that other modern chinese restaurants offer so we can actually compare the price and quality. They tasted decent but not the most authentic or stood out good. First glance at the price they seem slightly cheaper than their competitor, but the portions are smaller such as their XLB has less than their competitor so it actually makes them more expensive per unit. This was surprisingly pretty good. I was not expecting to like a Chinese restaurant in the plaza as much as I did, but it was quite solid. It's not exactly authentic, but it's not a disrespectful interpretation of Chinese food. I got the short rib noodles and the pickled cucumber salad. The cucumber salad was sweet, tangy, and a little zingy. The short rib noodles were slick, umami, and decadent. We came around 5pm and were seated right away. Parking was easy too as this place is located in a shopping area. The dan mein spare rib noodles were amazing! My favorite. We also had the crab fried rice, scallion pancakes, and 2 different types of xiao long bao. Everything was delicious and perfect. Things came out quickly and were hot. I've come back here a few times. It's their pan noodles and their garlic green beans that keep us coming back! They have both indoor and outdoor seating & the staff have been attentive when we're seated in both areas. My friends & I have tried different things but mostly come back for the shrimp Dan mein, beef broccoli, garlic green beans (we always fight over the large) & fried rice. If you're comparing to DTF; xlb, dimsum and cucumbers are okay. They're made differently. Location is great, being at the heart of 2nd and PCH. We were able to listen to the Thursday night concert (Prince cover) while we dined on yummy soup dumplings and other shareable items from the extensive menu. The staff were helpful and our server was knowledgeable about the choices. I particularly enjoyed the reasonably priced bottles of wine. I loved dining outside while listening to the great music on a fine and more than perfect California evening. We were looking at all the places to eat at 2nd & PCH & we're excited to try this place bc everything looked super yummy! Dan Modern Chinese has indoor & outdoor seating, and we came on a weekday around 7:15PM. It wasn't crowded at all & the hostess let us pick to sit wherever we wanted. Typically we understand when it's busy if the servers cannot drop by our table for an introduction, but it was lowkey kind of a long time before our server even came to greet or give waters. To the point where we almost walked out (we couldn't flag anyone down & no one looked our way). We ordered Mapo Tofu w/Crab, Xiao Long Bao's, Pickled Cucumbers, Scallion Pancake, Fried Dumplings. Everything tasted super yummy, my favorite was the scallion pancake bc it was on the crispy side!! We'd love to come back again and try and hopefully have better service. First time to this area in a long time!!! Wow has Long Beach changed!!! This new center was high end and reminded me of Pacific City in Huntington Beach. We were starving and the yelp reviews looked good for Dan Modern Chinese. We loved everything we ordered!! For a group of 5, the portions were split perfectly with 5 dumplings per order. We just got some pork XLB to-go, since I wanted to check out this chain. So based on that alone, enjoyed these soupy little dumplings. Honestly: I went here to nurse a hangover and their chicken noodle soup was the cure!! I got a bowl and it was the perfect amount of food, had plenty of shredded chicken, a well balanced broth, and chewy and tasty noodles. I've enjoyed their scallion pancake and xiao long bao in the past, but now I have a new recovery spot. The server was attentive and friendly and thankfully it wasn't busy so I was able to sit on the patio, but be warned it's pretty loud from other shoppers and kids while sitting outside (but great people watching!) read more

If you're looking for a dintaifung dupe, this is similar but not totally it. The soup dumplings are good but the portions are weird. You can buy 3 or 5 dumplings (those are weird numbers). Most place sell ten as standard. The soup dumplings skin is good here, thin and holds well. Their steamed dumplings though, felt like frozen premade dumpling skins. They were tough. Sesame noodles lacked flavor but if you ask for some chili oil and add in some vinegar and soy sauce it's improved for sure. The Chinese chicken salad was a seasonal dish and we enjoyed this one. I've had Dan in MB and wanted to try a different location. Their inside space can feel a little tight but they do have an outdoor patio. Located at 2nd & PCH, parking is free for 90 minutes. This location is a little busier than Manhattan Beach but its okay, there's plenty to do while waiting! We ordered our usual, Chicken, Pork XLB, Pork/Shrimp dumpling with chili oil, Pork Chop Fried Rice, Broccoli and String Beans. Luckily it was absolutely delicious so I still felt like it was worth the try. - Oxtail noodle soup (half portion for $11): The broth is phenomenal and reminds me of Korean bone broth soup. My first time here! I enjoyed a much needed solo date and finally got to try one of the restaurants I've always wanted to try on my bucketlist! The atmosphere was very lovely and the environment was not overwhelming. I came in a great time where it wasn't too packed. The interior was beautiful. Loved the half booth and half table seating. Cesar was my server. He was very kind and friendly. Anna, the manager, personally introduced herself and even tried getting to know me a bit. She even comp'd the pickles, which was very nice of her. This place has plenty of inside & outside seating. Now the parking can get a little hectic. Park your vehicle in the nearby parking garage which offers the first 90 mins of Parking FREE. This Sunday, My church friends and I were wondering where to eat and one of them suggested this place! (Yay! I've been wanting to try this place! We've been coming here since they first opened, and it's stayed consistently good, which honestly says a lot. I have to call out the manager, Anne. She's always busy, constantly moving, but still makes a point to greet people, check in and talk to our boys. That kind of attention is rare, and you can feel the difference in how the whole place runs. The food is legit. Not just "good enough for LB," it's actually authentic. The crab fried rice is hands down the best fried rice I've had. The flavor and texture are just on point every time. The xiaolongbao is also really solid. I'd compare it to Din Tai Fung. DTF has more variety, but this feels like a more focused, smaller menu that still delivers on quality. If they ever add chocolate xiaolongbao, it would honestly make this place perfect. read more

Food is fine. Unfortunately, my first experience dining here was not the best due to the female hostess at the front (the short one). Prior to going into the restaurant I had noticed outside patio was not filled up at all but was given a 30-40 min wait time to get seated. Decided to order to go instead. Was told to come back in 10-15 mins. Came back in 10 min and still had to wait for our food but noticed two parties were seated asap outside. Given no time of the wait like I did. I asked the hostess if I can go ahead and get seated outside since it seems to be more available now than 10 mins ago. She advised that they had made reservations. Which I know was not true at all, she did not ask neither of them for the name on reservation. Another party came a second after I asked her and they were seated, once again right away. She never came back to the front to me bc I know she knew that I had caught her in her made up stories of those three parties having reservations. I decided to ask someone else to see if I could order food for here and get seated. He was able to seat me right away. Super nice guy. Same with our waitress and the gentleman who brought our food out. I'm not sure what that hostess had against me and my 5 year old child that evening. She did not want us to dine here at all. I ended up paying for two of the same orders this evening just to be able to get seated at a table.
