We've been coming here since they first opened, and it's stayed consistently good, which honestly says a lot. I have to call out the manager, Anne. She's always busy, constantly moving, but still makes a point to greet people, check in and talk to our boys. That kind of attention is rare, and you can feel the difference in how the whole place runs. The food is legit. Not just "good enough for LB," it's actually authentic. The crab fried rice is hands down the best fried rice I've had. The flavor and texture are just on point every time. The xiaolongbao is also really solid. I'd compare it to Din Tai Fung. DTF has more variety, but this feels like a more focused, smaller menu that still delivers on quality. If they ever add chocolate xiaolongbao, it would honestly make this place perfect. read more

They have both indoor and outdoor seating & the staff have been attentive when we're seated in both areas. My friends & I have tried different things but mostly come back for the shrimp Dan mein, beef broccoli, garlic green beans (we always fight over the large) & fried rice. If you're comparing to DTF; xlb, dimsum and cucumbers are okay. They're made differently. Honestly: I went here to nurse a hangover and their chicken noodle soup was the cure!! I got a bowl and it was the perfect amount of food, had plenty of shredded chicken, a well balanced broth, and chewy and tasty noodles. I've enjoyed their scallion pancake and xiao long bao in the past, but now I have a new recovery spot. First time to this area in a long time!!! Wow has Long Beach changed!!! This new center was high end and reminded me of Pacific City in Huntington Beach. We were starving and the yelp reviews looked good for Dan Modern Chinese. We loved everything we ordered!! For a group of 5, the portions were split perfectly with 5 dumplings per order. If you're looking for a dintaifung dupe, this is similar but not totally it. The soup dumplings are good but the portions are weird. You can buy 3 or 5 dumplings (those are weird numbers). Most place sell ten as standard. The soup dumplings skin is good here, thin and holds well. Their steamed dumplings though, felt like frozen premade dumpling skins. They were tough. Sesame noodles lacked flavor but if you ask for some chili oil and add in some vinegar and soy sauce it's improved for sure. The Chinese chicken salad was a seasonal dish and we enjoyed this one. There were some people but nothing crazy Our server was great from start to finish and helped up decide on what to get an how much of it since portioning is different here. The portions are shareable but nothing too crazy. Which was good as well as the price, which got me wanting to order more of different things to try out for everyone. This is place to go with more than just one or two. You can still very much enjoy it but a couple more people , whom are willing to share of course will help you get an idea of what to get. From what we ordered everything was good, something more than other. But surprisingly the seaweed salad I very much enjoyed as well as the broth to the oxtail. The udon noodles in their noodle dishes made it better since they are thicker. We did get some dumplings. They were very good especially the soup ones. My first time here! I enjoyed a much needed solo date and finally got to try one of the restaurants I've always wanted to try on my bucketlist! The atmosphere was very lovely and the environment was not overwhelming. I came in a great time where it wasn't too packed. The interior was beautiful. Loved the half booth and half table seating. Cesar was my server. He was very kind and friendly. Anna, the manager, personally introduced herself and even tried getting to know me a bit. She even comp'd the pickles, which was very nice of her. I ordered Dan Dan noodles with pork, pickles, 3 pc. chicken steamed dumpling, and 3 pc pork soup dumpling. Everything was delicious and the portion sizes were perfect! Walked towards the podium by outside door to talk to host who sat us, then a min later sat another couple next to us, who just walked in. Food is fine. Unfortunately, my first experience dining here was not the best due to the female hostess at the front (the short one). Prior to going into the restaurant I had noticed outside patio was not filled up at all but was given a 30-40 min wait time to get seated. Decided to order to go instead. Was told to come back in 10-15 mins. Came back in 10 min and still had to wait for our food but noticed two parties were seated asap outside. Given no time of the wait like I did. I asked the hostess if I can go ahead and get seated outside since it seems to be more available now than 10 mins ago. She advised that they had made reservations. Which I know was not true at all, she did not ask neither of them for the name on reservation. Another party came a second after I asked her and they were seated, once again right away. She never came back to the front to me bc I know she knew that I had caught her in her made up stories of those three parties having reservations. I decided to ask someone else to see if I could order food for here and get seated. He was able to seat me right away. Super nice guy. Same with our waitress and the gentleman who brought our food out. I'm not sure what that hostess had against me and my 5 year old child that evening. She did not want us to dine here at all. I ended up paying for two of the same orders this evening just to be able to get seated at a table. been to 2nd and pch multiple times, but this is my first time coming to dan modern chinese. went inside the restaurant and was immediately greeted and sat. the decor also lives up to its name, very modern haha. once sat, we were given menus and some sauce trays with ginger. ordering was very simple and food came out fast. throughout the meal, the servers are pretty accommodating and nice, they checked in with us a couple times to see if there was anything we needed. now time for a short food review ! dan mein short rib : (3/5) - noodles were bouncy and thicc with a flavorful sauce. there was also a good noodle to meat ratio, but a bit expensive considering the overall size and price. string beans : (4.5/5) - could be comparable to the dish at din tai fung. it is simple, flavorful, and very garlicky. however, it could be a bit too salty for some. crispy veg dumplings : (5/5) - LOVED THE CRUNCH ! the crispy dumplings were the best and there was lots of filling. it tasted a bit like floral, but that could be because of the veggies. there is also a bit of hoisin (?) sauce on the side, but i liked dipping it in the vinegar (?) sauce. delicious. sesame noodles : (3/5) - very very small portion size, but kind of expected due to rising costs. noodles were a decent texture, though there is not enough sauce. pork and shrimp xlb : (4/5) - the wrappers on the xlb were just right and the soup was very juicy, but nothing really stood out. overall, the food could be a bit pricy, but it was delicious and i would return if i was in the area craving modern chinese. read more
