We were looking at all the places to eat at 2nd & PCH & we're excited to try this place bc everything looked super yummy! Dan Modern Chinese has indoor & outdoor seating, and we came on a weekday around 7:15PM. It wasn't crowded at all & the hostess let us pick to sit wherever we wanted. Typically we understand when it's busy if the servers cannot drop by our table for an introduction, but it was lowkey kind of a long time before our server even came to greet or give waters. To the point where we almost walked out (we couldn't flag anyone down & no one looked our way). We ordered Mapo Tofu w/Crab, Xiao Long Bao's, Pickled Cucumbers, Scallion Pancake, Fried Dumplings. Everything tasted super yummy, my favorite was the scallion pancake bc it was on the crispy side!! We'd love to come back again and try and hopefully have better service. This was surprisingly pretty good. I was not expecting to like a Chinese restaurant in the plaza as much as I did, but it was quite solid. It's not exactly authentic, but it's not a disrespectful interpretation of Chinese food. I got the short rib noodles and the pickled cucumber salad. The cucumber salad was sweet, tangy, and a little zingy. The short rib noodles were slick, umami, and decadent. We came around 5pm and were seated right away. Parking was easy too as this place is located in a shopping area. The dan mein spare rib noodles were amazing! My favorite. We also had the crab fried rice, scallion pancakes, and 2 different types of xiao long bao. Everything was delicious and perfect. Things came out quickly and were hot. I've come back here a few times. It's their pan noodles and their garlic green beans that keep us coming back! They have both indoor and outdoor seating & the staff have been attentive when we're seated in both areas. My friends & I have tried different things but mostly come back for the shrimp Dan mein, beef broccoli, garlic green beans (we always fight over the large) & fried rice. If you're comparing to DTF; xlb, dimsum and cucumbers are okay. They're made differently. Honestly: I went here to nurse a hangover and their chicken noodle soup was the cure!! I got a bowl and it was the perfect amount of food, had plenty of shredded chicken, a well balanced broth, and chewy and tasty noodles. If you're looking for a dintaifung dupe, this is similar but not totally it. The soup dumplings are good but the portions are weird. You can buy 3 or 5 dumplings (those are weird numbers). Most place sell ten as standard. The soup dumplings skin is good here, thin and holds well. Their steamed dumplings though, felt like frozen premade dumpling skins. They were tough. Sesame noodles lacked flavor but if you ask for some chili oil and add in some vinegar and soy sauce it's improved for sure. The Chinese chicken salad was a seasonal dish and we enjoyed this one. I've had Dan in MB and wanted to try a different location. Their inside space can feel a little tight but they do have an outdoor patio. Located at 2nd & PCH, parking is free for 90 minutes. This location is a little busier than Manhattan Beach but its okay, there's plenty to do while waiting! We ordered our usual, Chicken, Pork XLB, Pork/Shrimp dumpling with chili oil, Pork Chop Fried Rice, Broccoli and String Beans. My first time here! I enjoyed a much needed solo date and finally got to try one of the restaurants I've always wanted to try on my bucketlist! The atmosphere was very lovely and the environment was not overwhelming. I came in a great time where it wasn't too packed. The interior was beautiful. Loved the half booth and half table seating. Cesar was my server. He was very kind and friendly. Anna, the manager, personally introduced herself and even tried getting to know me a bit. She even comp'd the pickles, which was very nice of her. We've been coming here since they first opened, and it's stayed consistently good, which honestly says a lot. I have to call out the manager, Anne. She's always busy, constantly moving, but still makes a point to greet people, check in and talk to our boys. That kind of attention is rare, and you can feel the difference in how the whole place runs. The food is legit. Not just "good enough for LB," it's actually authentic. The crab fried rice is hands down the best fried rice I've had. The flavor and texture are just on point every time. The xiaolongbao is also really solid. I'd compare it to Din Tai Fung. DTF has more variety, but this feels like a more focused, smaller menu that still delivers on quality. If they ever add chocolate xiaolongbao, it would honestly make this place perfect. read more

Was told to come back in 10-15 mins. Came back in 10 min and still had to wait for our food but noticed two parties were seated asap outside. Given no time of the wait like I did. I asked the hostess if I can go ahead and get seated outside since it seems to be more available now than 10 mins ago. She advised that they had made reservations. Which I know was not true at all, she did not ask neither of them for the name on reservation. Another party came a second after I asked her and they were seated, once again right away. She never came back to the front to me bc I know she knew that I had caught her in her made up stories of those three parties having reservations. I decided to ask someone else to see if I could order food for here and get seated. He was able to seat me right away. Super nice guy. Same with our waitress and the gentleman who brought our food out. I'm not sure what that hostess had against me and my 5 year old child that evening. She did not want us to dine here at all.
