Came here for the first time over 20 years ago. This was the spot that started my Pho journey. The food was delicious and the place was always packed with people with excellent service. Fast forward to today, I went to see if it was still good. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The service was okay, not the best. I ordered the Chicken Pho and the broth was so salty. There's not a huge Vietnamese population in Long Beach, especially compared to the nearby Little Saigon in Orange County. As a Vietnamese woman born and raised in Garden Grove, I have a pretty high bar for Pho. Pho Hong Phat is a great option for those in Long Beach that don't want to make the trek out to the OC. Brought my grandma to try the Banh Sung that she always asks me for. It was good, but typically they use larger vermicelli noodles in banh sung. It was supposed to be topped with coconut cream but they had forgotten that. I had the Hainan chicken rice which was pretty good. The rice was a little dry, but it was flavorful. Their fish sauce here is really good though, we loved it. It seems a lot of people were coming in to try the pho or kuyteav, so we'll be back to try that next. Even the housin sauce had kind of a deep, rich flavor. The place had a smell something like fish sauce when we came in but hear me out, I wonder if that actually made everything taste better. (Maybe that's obvious. I'm just usually not a fan of the smell per se.) I'm so bummed that the flavor and quality has changed since Nancy and her family sold the business. My husband and I have been coming here for years (before we got married and had two kids), and we treated this place as the equivalent of a diner if we were white and in the Midwest. This was the place where we would slow down, catch up on each other's work lives and talk about plans for the week while having an early lunch. The pho has become our comfort food and we'd choose to come here week after week because it really was the best pho around. But since the new owners took over, the taste of the food has changed. I'm not saying it's bad because someone else might like it, but it's no longer the same pho that won our loyalty to this restaurant. For starters, the broth is saltier, darker, and smellier (heavy on the fish sauce maybe?) and their infamous satay is now sour (started adding vinegar for longer preservation maybe?). I don't mind the smaller bowls and the increase in price (inflation is kicking everyone's butt), and I understand the need to cut *some* corners to make back the money they invested in purchasing this place... I would gladly pay the price if I knew I'd be getting the same bowl of my comfort pho. But I'm afraid they have cut corners all around and Pho Hong Phat no longer serves the same food as before. We really wanted to give the new owners a shot and were rooting for their success of taking over this Long Beach gem, but we are truly disappointed. read more

They purchased more than just a restaurant, Pho Hong Phat was a community. With loyal patrons of 15+ years. The new owners seemingly took that for granted. They were guided, transitioned and given the wheel with a full tank of gas. Slowly I started detecting subtle changes. The service, ambiance and operation was to be expected, but the Pho, the Pho shouldn't have changed. I've noticed the broth consistency waning. The flavor profile declining. This is a sin. The meat quality has also changed. It's tougher, a lesser cut. This is negligible. Upon my last visit, a most egregious change was observed. The serving bowls have shrunk. This is greed. Surprised not to see this rated higher. This is a highly functional spot that moves fast and has quality food. Staff tend to you really quickly and deliver food really fast. In addition, the quality of the food is on point. An added bonus, the staff is super friendly. I've frequented other Vietnamese restaurants and this is my go to spot. I had my regular, rare stack and double meat balls. The brother was too thick and salty, the stake was not as fresh and even the rice noodles was tougher than before. So I went on Yelp looked up some local spots and decided to go with this place. The pho is delicious. The broth is very flavorful. I'm pleasantly surprised! The meat is tender and the accompaniments are fresh! I love that the pho came out piping hot! I also ordered a Thai tea and it was delicious, very fragrant and the perfect amount of sweetness. I used to come here growing up, wayy before they changed ownership. Nancy and Pablo knew me and my family because we were regulars and they always gave me and my sister M&M's. Since they renovated, the interior has changed and upgraded and looks nice. The new workers are nice, however, I feel like they hover crazy and expect you to order the moment you are sat. I order the same thing, but they do it to everyone. I've brought friends here and it makes us feel so rushed to order. The pho quality does feel like it's gone down. Some days its better than others. And over time, I've noticed the flavor isn't as strong and good as the first few times I started coming back here. There are language barriers with some of the workers which isn't a problem, but some days I'm more disappointed in the service and awkwardness when they're standing in the corner hovering, watching you, and it's silent with no background music or anything. Pho Hong Phat has a small parking lot behind the restaurant, but only a few spots so it fills up fast. We ended up finding parking on a nearby street. The restaurant is bigger than it seems upon entering, with three distinct dining rooms. The menu is simple, and pho comes in four sizes: small, medium, large, and extra large. Prices are very affordable, from $9-$16. I loved that I could pick a pho with tendon and tripe (my two favorite cuts), though there was no option for a combination of everything. The broth tasted nice and flavorful, and I could really taste the herbs. I loved how hot the broth stayed, even more than halfway through the bowl. The Chinese donuts (油條 in Chinese) represent the Cambodian part of the menu, and were fried fresh with a nice crisp to it. It was the first time in my life having pho with youtiao! We also ordered a bao, but the bread was a bit soggy. The Thai iced tea was sweet and creamy, and I loved the sugar cane juice (not on the menu but advertised on the walls). This restaurant used to be my family's go-to pho spot. I grew up going to this place. No matter who the owner was or what the restaurant was called, one thing that never changed was the pho recipe. That is, until this new ownership/cooks. The broth, the quality of meat, everything has changed and not for the better.
