That's the beauty of this concept restaurant, somewhere in between fast food and plate lunch: the plate will stay HOT for your entire meal. (The food also comes out super fast, although this is balanced by the small line you may have to wait in before there are enough seats for your party. Food (mostly steak beefy things, but also pasta and other options) is served on cast iron plates (like the cows they serve kalbi on at the best Korean restaurants). Those plates are my favorite thing in the world and I wish ALL my food was served on them! The line moves fast and prices are reasonable (think upper-end plate lunch prices). Don't go with tiny kids that can't keep their hands off the plates, but other than that, it's a good place for families. read more

Arrived at 10:55 on a Monday and the restaurant was letting diners in, so no line! We were welcomed with the traditional Japanese "Irashaimasei!" And promptly shown to a table. It was our first time but we were prepared, having studied up on what to do. We quickly went to one of the two kiosks (there's also one server manned ordering station) and entered our orders. There were so many choices that we took a while because the options and add ons were plentiful. (Order your free water, too if that's all you want for a beverage.) Once you order you enter the number of the buzzer next to the kiosk and pay with credit card (no cash). Because we were one of the first in the restaurant our food came quickly. If you plan to take pics be prepared! There were four of us. Three ordered beef pepper rice, and I added mozzarella cheese to mine. The last was a beef and chicken combo that I didn't get a pic of because by then I was busy stirring up my dish. We all loved our beef entrees. Meat was thinly sliced and tender. I liked the cheese but there wasn't much, should be more. The person with the chicken and beef combo said she liked the combo and would get it again. We all enjoyed the garlic shoyu. Didn't try the sweet brown, maybe next time. Food was delicious. Corn is nice and fresh and crunchy. Regular size was more than enough for us ladies but we managed to finish all but a bite or two of rice. We were all very full. Guys probably need the jumbo unless they are doing a lot of add ons. I plan to try adding mushrooms and kim chee next time, maybe more corn. I had come prepared to be spattered on but it was minimal (which is good). The paper sleeve around the cast iron platter really helped. Manager (?) came over to make sure we were ok and recommended we try the sauces. Server checked on us several times and refilled our water. All in all - a fun eating experience. The sizzling plates are cast iron and are extremely hot, so if with children please be careful! There is a paper guard on the plate, but I still found a way to touch it accidentally! Some interesting beverages worth trying and lots of sides and add ons for your sizzling plate. Anticipate a line at dinner but the experience is worth the wait- our food arrived fast and hot! Checking out this new place located in the airport area in the Moanalua Shopping Center (where Panda Express and MacDonald's are). Big parking lot. We arrived around 5:30 pm on a Saturday and there was a pretty good line outside. We met nice people in line and it moved fast-maybe 15 minutes wait. Very efficient seating- they try to fit parties to the open tables. Ample tables inside. You order and pay at screens and grab a number and find a table to sit at. Credit card only. We ordered the beef pepper rice, curry hamburger and beef combo - there are additional things you can add for a small charge like egg, mushrooms. I added the egg and mushrooms to mine. The sizzling hot cast iron dishes are brought out to you (careful if you have small children!) Food came out pretty fast- you can see the workers behind assembling the food in a line. So you mix the rice and everything together and the heat from the cast iron cooks it. I'd suggest keeping the rice on the bottom for a crispy texture and the beef on top so it won't get overdone. The curry combo came with the curry on the side so you can add according to taste. The beef was nicely seasoned, tender. Definitely get the egg- it adds additional flavor to the rice. There was also corn and green onions for garnish. The curry hamburger was a hit as well. The curry had thinner texture but tasted good. Pepper Lunch was a new spot open at Moanalua Shopping Center. My coworkers wanted to try this place as it was new. You order at the screen and a server will bring your order to you. Your dish arrives on a hot plate with a paper protector around it to prevent splashes from the meat still cooking on the hot plate. Overall the dish was good, but feel like the it could use a little more flavor. It comes with your choice of meat, egg, garlic chips, and an option to add an egg. Was super excited to try this new place. Surprised at how small the store was - with very limited number of seats/tables - and so we had to wait outside in line for 20 minutes. Staff comes outside to ask how many is in our party - we say 3. She looks inside and says, "we have two (high top tables) - did you want to split your group?" Ummm... we're a party of 3. So one person sits and eats alone while the other two sit together? We said no, all of us want to sit together - and was told it would be 5-10 min (it was actually about 20 minutes) When we finally got in to sit, we were sent to a kiosk to purchase our oder. Just came here for the first time today. I was surprised how quick the turnover is. Even though there's a little bit of a wait, people go in and out frequently. With that said, the food came out very fast. Since its a glorified fried rice place, you cook and mix up the food at your table which is why the food comes out so far. I was a little overwhelmed with the menu and having to choose and pay for your food at the counter. I have had Pepper Lunch in California, and I was impressed, so I needed to give this spot a try. As soon as you walk in, there are too many tables that serve no purpose. You have to walk to the counter to place your order on a giant screen. There are two screens. If the line does get backed up, the unlucky people sitting on the tables in the middle aisle will have someone's elbow on their table. They should move the larger tables to the back and remove the tables in the middle. The setup is terrible. The workers are very friendly and helpful. That saved this visit. This was our first time here. Overall I would say the food is delish. No real complaints there. Service was quick and staff was friendly. The reason I gave it a 4 star is mainly due to the kinks they have to work out. 2 big things for me was, when I got my food(again service was real quick) but I ordered the kimchi beef rice, i got the wrong order, so they took it back and it took a while to come back, by then my plate was not sizzling and I felt like it just ruined the whole reason why we paid over $20 each for this rice mix. The second big thing was the fries, we paid $4.99 for about 10-14 fries and some crumbs. I was really disappointed in that. See picture below. So, my expectations were a little higher than most people Pros: although the line was long (maybe 10-15 people ahead of us) it moved pretty quickly. Easy to order process using kiosk and if you had questions the workers were helpful. Food came out promptly and steaming hot. Adequate amount of seating. This could be also a con for some but the raw meats that we ordered tasted like there was no seasoning but seasonings were on the table to add. Cons: pricing (but this is Hawaii so...). First Timers to this restaurant... we decided to take a chance and swing by to see if we could get in for a late dinner. Lady Luck was on our side! There was a short line inside the restaurant, but it went quickly. You order at the kiosk, take a pager. Then, the workers seat you and serve you water. Shout out to to all the social media foodies that have hyped the opening of Pepper Lunch's first Hawaii location cause I can't remember a new-to-Hawaii restaurant's anticipated opening being so fever pitched as it has been in the weeks before Pepper Lunch's December 2025 opening. Came the Monday following Pepper Lunch's opening weekend thinking surely there won't be a line out the door as I had heard over the weekend; but I grossly underestimated that assumption. There were already 20 people in line before their opening time of 11am. Hahahaha. I used to wait in line for shoes but now I guess I wait in line for Pepper Lunch. The line once they opened actually moved pretty quickly and I was inside ordering at one of the two kiosks before I knew it. Some kiosk ordering platforms can admittedly be confusing to navigate but Pepper Lunch's kiosk was actually really simple. Once finished ordering, you'll grab a numbered table marker and seat yourself at a table. It was a packed house on this day so it did make it seem like the inside was a bit small (maybe enough seating for 30 people). But it's new so the space is nicely lit, AC is cold, and the simple table fixtures make it that tables could be turned into 2 top or 4 top tables depending on party size. Of note, Pepper Lunch is cashless so bring that card that racks up points on food purchases. I decided on the popular Beef Pepper Rice (regular size) and added an egg. There's also a jumbo size option. Food came out quickly and sizzling!! The most common way that everyone eats their Pepper Lunch sets is pretty much mix everything up nicely first and then you can start eating. First bite was good! I've had Pepper Lunch in Japan a long time ago and have to say it's just as good as I remember. Too bad they're not Japan prices tho! Haha. But for around $18 I thoroughly enjoyed my Beef Pepper Rice. We ended up getting the Kim chee beef rice and a shrimp pasta with a side of fries. The beef fried rice comes out sizzling and you need to push down the middle to get the butter onto the hot plate. Mix it all up and enjoy! I really enjoyed the flavor of this dish but as others have noted the size is a little on the smaller side but it was enough where I wasn't still hungry after Shrimp pasta came out sizzling too! And garlic smell was heavenly! The pasta portion could have been bigger but it wouldn't present as nice. There were a good amount of shrimp which is more important! Fries are a must! Great speedy service, tasty food, unique concept. The plates are sizzling hot iron plates surrounded by a paper ring reminding you they are HOT. The center of the plate is a mound of rice or spaghetti (al dente!) which is then surrounded by the protein of your choice. If you haven't had the chance to try a Pepper Lunch in Japan, you've missed out on what is probably one of the best bang-for-your-buck meals. It's been one of my favorite places to grab a quick bite whenever I'm in Tokyo ever since a friend introduced it to me. I'll be the first to admit I've been dealing with some serious Japan withdrawals this year, with no trip planned thanks to being pulled in a million different directions. However, imagine my surprise when a Pepper Lunch TikTok shows up on my For You page. Here on O'ahu, no less! No, it wasn't a silly joke (like the posts that keep trying to convince the general population that Trader Joe's is finally coming here), but it actually was in the process of opening up its first location in Hawai'i. Like most new openings, I already knew I would be avoiding the initial rush and the inevitable lines. I am not much of a "wait an hour for food" person, especially when I usually only go out to eat once the hanger really starts to hit. So we waited a few weeks until my husband and friend finally convinced me to give it a shot. We arrived around 7:45 to 8:00 PM and were pleasantly surprised by the lack of a major line. There were maybe 8 to 10 parties ahead of us, mostly groups of 2 or 3, and the line moved quickly. Staff were walking the line to confirm party sizes and seating preferences, and a few lucky 2 tops snagged high-top tables and got seated early. Even so, the wait felt short and well managed, and we were inside in no time. Ordering is done through kiosks, which I personally prefer (it saves everyone from my apologetic looks when my husband inevitably adds every available add-on to his plate). Prices are definitely higher than Japan, with plates starting around $15.99 and add-ons averaging about $2.29 each, but that was expected. We all ordered the Jumbo Beef Pepper Rice plates and headed to our table. Despite it being fairly busy for a Monday night, service was impressively fast. From ordering to food hitting the table, it was maybe a 10 to 15 minute wait. The kitchen staff looked completely locked in, each person moving with purpose as if they had entered a full flow state. Servers were just as efficient, checking in regularly, refilling water, and clearing plates. Taste-wise, I had heard mixed feedback comparing it to Japan, and while it is slightly different, it was still very enjoyable. The beef was well seasoned, the rice soaked up the flavors nicely, and the vegetables added just enough balance to keep the dish from feeling too heavy. The sizzling hot plate really does the work here, letting everything continue to cook and crisp as you mix it together. The sauces are a big part of the experience and make the meal feel customizable, depending on how savory or rich you want it to be. The real highlight, though, was the manager (who we later learned was also the owner, Sean!) He greeted guests with such enthusiasm, checked in throughout the meal, and made a point to see how everyone's experience was, even as people were heading out. Although I was excited at first , I wasn't too sure about the wait. Excellent service and food that's on par with the Pepper Lunch I had in Japan. Stopped by the Moanalua Shopping Center location during brunch and was impressed. The food came out piping hot and fresh, with the garlic sauce adding a great kick. Service was quick, and the restaurant was clean. Sean (manager/owner) was friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Way to much pepper. my dad always says when u add to much black pepper, the food has no taste and he is right... food was a bit flavorless... cream sauce seperated and was seperated when it came to the table. And u order for urself no one to take ur order except a kiosk. People just delivery ur food. Small but cozy place. Very noisy.. been wanting to try since they opened but ah not worth it. Stopped by and the place was super crowded with a huge line out the door. Probably due to the dinner rush and bc of all the promotion on social media. Staff were super friendly and nice though, my friend was getting really hungry and tired so a waitress came and got her some water while we were ordering. It was a little inefficient and definitely not laid out to handle the crowds--service was really patient despite the busyness tho so props to those employees. I think I'll wait for the hype to die down a little before I come back. The food was pretty good! We got a beef rice, chicken rice and shrimp/salmon rice. It comes on a sizzling platter and you smash the rice and spread it around the platter to get some nice crispy edges (if you can be patient.) Careful not to burn your mouth, I definitely did on my first bite. And also if you get the shrimps, make sure to eat those quickly so they don't overcook, but the garlic rice with the shrimp was probably the best combo of our plates. My beef plate was pretty good after adding some of the "sweet brown" sauce from the table. Personally I thought the chicken was dry...it was well seasoned chicken breast but overcooked from the start imo, but my fiance still liked it? After tax and tip it came out to about $77 for 3 plates and a drink, which we found out was refillable! Imo its a fun experience and would recommend trying at least once, but its pretty similar to my home cooking so I might only come back to check out a pasta or something. read more

Wait this place is called Pepper Lunch?! I thought it was Pepper Heaven. Because that's where I found myself upon trying the delicious food here, in the best way. My husband and I have been excited to try the food and man it did not disappoint! We were in love with our meals. We stopped in on a Wednesday and it's always best to come before the dinner rush starts. We were here at 4 pm and there was no line. The service was quick and you input your order on the kiosk and the dish combo comes to you sizzling. I haven't been this excited about a new restaurant in a long time and the food is so amazing. We love the Salmon & Beef combo with egg and mushroom add ons. We loved it so much that we came again on the weekend. Twice in one week? Maybe a little excessive but just come and check it out and see for yourself! We will make sure to return many more times to try the various combos offered especially their premium combos.
