I went to Parlor Doughnuts for the first time today and have no regrets! The staff working there were nice and helpful with any question I had. I loved how fast they were able to move the line along. I originally came in for the savory donuts, but they were out of cheese so I wasn't able to try any. So I decided to go the sweet route and I'm so glad I did! I got three donuts: The Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Hill, and Raspberry Pistachio. They were all so good, but the Raspberry Pistachio was my favorite! More than meets the eye at this small donut shop. The donuts here were very fresh and delicious! They are think so consider sharing one donut between two adults but after a good workout, I can finish one donut solo. We ordered the popular French toast and six donut holes. The French toast donut was sweet but not overpowering on the sweetness. This donut is about an inch thick. The donut holes were fresh and soft also, both of these items were a home run! There were some tables outside, no inside tables but the line was out the door and it moves faster than the line a space mountain in Disneyland. The line did move pretty well, we were out of there within 10 minutes and it was busy on Labor Day. There is a good amount of parking around that street, plus this shop is near the famous Top Gun house in the first movie. Placed an order for delivery this morning and received the delivery. Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and not a single doughnut was correct. I tried to call them four times and nobody ever picked up. They do this as a get your money and don't care anymore. I use to enjoy getting droughts from there. I'm surprised to realize that I've not reviewed them before. I have been here several times and always enjoyed my donuts. Depending when you go, parking isn't too bad. There's street parking just outside. I've never been when there's a wait either. I'm always greeted by an enthusiastic helpful staff member who can answer all my questions. There are so many flavors to choose from and they change. On this visit after looking at all the choices, we chose the French toast donut which was slated to be the most popular. We asked if they could cut it in half but we were told they are not allowed and that there are knives nearby. We took our donut and we sat outside on their picnic benches. It was a lovely day to be sitting outside. There were several people out there already eating their donuts and drinking coffee. It was a bit challenging to cut through the donut with the plastic knife, as it's pretty thick. The outside was crispy while the inside was pillowy and doughy. It was a nice combination. Parlor is a essential and vital Oceanside experience. The coffee is bomb, the donuts are flavorful and unique, the service is helpful and kind (a trait not found much in the world). It's a small shop with a great ambiance and vibe. Family friendly and the have a great small selection of Parlor Doughnut merch. We sampled 6 donuts : lemon, churro, sandy beach, French toast, coconut, blueberry. All good choices but French toast was the majority winner. Beyond Disappointing. Please note this review is specifically for the Vegan & Gluten Free Donuts. I'll gladly update this review if there are updated/changes to these options. For a place that takes pride (clearly visible in their regular donuts), why the hell would you put vegan & gluten free in the same donut without providing regular vegan options too? To top it off, all the donuts are $4.25 EACH for the tiniest bite size donut. It doesn't matter what kind of toppings, frosting, glaze etcetera that you put on it, a gluten free item is tasteless (or I should say tastes the exact same with a worse after taste than any regular dairy made donut). Also for those that are unaware, most gluten free items are dry too. It doesn't say on the menu nor did the very sweet & kind hostess that helped us tell me about them until after I asked her what those little tiny things the Pastry Chef was making in the back. She said those are your donuts & proceeded to tell me they were baked not fried & that they were both vegan & gluten free. I was ordering these donuts thinking that they had the option of EITHER vegan OR gluten free options. Very disappointing considering I researched this space & was told by local friends that it's a must. The regular donuts look absolutely gorgeous & taste (I had to stay neutral about the overall venue & took a bite of my Girlfriends donut) pretty damn good. Do better on the Vegan & Gluten Free donuts. Keep up the high integrity & high quality product that you showcase in the glass cases up front. I'll look forward to coming back in the future. Yes, I'm a nerd. A nerd who watches entirely too many cooking competition shows. So that's the grain of salt you can take this review with. My fiancée & I had seen Parlor Doughnuts numerous times after the Oceanside Sunset Market. & every single 1 of those times, we were already too full from grazing at all the food stands by then to give it a try. So on a Saturday afternoon, when we just happened to be nearby, we popped in for some impulse buy doughnuts. With a staggering variety of delicious looking toppings/ flavors, the possibilities looked enticingly intriguing. Staff behind the counter was friendly attentive, & helpful. Although there are some savory options available, which seemed to me like pizza toppings on doughnuts, we stuck with sweet: maple bacon & bourbon caramel. Tried & true flavor combinations, both. But the dough, whoa. For starters, the 2 doughnuts we got didn't have holes. That actually makes a difference in how the doughnut cooks. Secondly, the dough ate more like bread dough than a doughnut. Doughnuts have a hole for a reason. You see, it's physics, son. When you consider how thermodynamics affects an oblate spheroid vs. a toroidal sphere, it becomes evident that a doughnut without a hole will not cook evenly throughout inside. In fact, this was specifically proven on MasterChef Canada Season 8, Episode 8 during a doughnut pressure test. In that episode, Andres forgot to put holes in his doughnuts & they were undercooked in the center. Hey, I did start this review with admitting I'm a nerd who watches too many cooking competition shows. Uniform doneness aside, there was also the breadiness. If I'd been told these doughnuts were some kind of new take on Pan Dulce, maybe I would've liked them more. But given the expectation of a doughnut, what I tried at Parlor Doughnuts just wasn't it. Pretty bummed that my local location in North Park has been closed for quite some time, but it's so good that I'm willing to make the trek (on public transportation, no less) to this location. The shop itself has a clean, old-school look to it, and it's a good kind of busy inside with people coming in for coffee and boxes to go. We picked out a mix of flavors -- s'mores, churro, raspberry pistachio, strawberry shortcake, and bourbon pecan. All of them were light and layered, almost like a croissant doughnut, and the texture stood out right away. The churro was coated nicely with cinnamon sugar, the raspberry pistachio had a bright flavor and a good crunch from the nuts, and the s'mores one had that classic chocolate and marshmallow combo. CHILL LITTLE SHOP w/ mid-tier donut options. I stopped by per my Mom's recommendation as we heard good things about Parlor. It's a pretty big donut organization now across the US, so we decided to try it. I wasn't a major fan of the bread ratio inside my "Sandy Beach" donut. My mom and some other reviews said they're going for a cronut style of pastry. However, this wasn't flaky nor tasted like a cronut. It just felt like an excessive amount of bread without flavor, aside from the top and outer bread layer. The flavor wasn't bad on the outside (it was actually pretty good), however the inside was very underwhelming. Its a shame as the outside of the "donut" tasted like a mix of apple pie and cinnamon roll. I'll give the shop credit for their tasty coffee, I loved my layered cold brew! Service was also hit or miss, a young couple in front of me was treated poorly. I didn't like that. I was treated pretty well, but I hate to see other people my age get mistreated. Only one younger guy (an employee) who was working double time had a nice attitude. My Dad and I were disappointed as the autumn specialty items were not available. This was not a inventory issue, they just didn't have anything ready. I wasn't a fan of the decor, it just was too over the top in some places. I did enjoy the lighting and retro feel, but it felt like this location was trying too hard with the excessive decorations in the background. The bathroom was gross and unkempt. I probably got more than I should have, every single one of them looked so good. Best seller is the French toast and I can see why that one is really good! I also very much enjoyed blueberry Hill. We stumbled across Parlor Donuts on Yelp while searching for a breakfast place walking distance from our Oceanside accommodations. The pictures and reviews alone left our mouths watering. After all, who doesn't love an occasional donut? We both looked at each other and said, want to go, more or less simultaneously. And... WOW! Just wow. First, what a cute place. Right in the thick of things in downtown Oceanside, near the walkway to the pier on Cleveland St. N., it's open-aired, whimsically decorated, and super functional in terms of moving people through quickly. There's plenty of outdoor seating, too. And, THE DONUTS! The first thing that strikes you is the amazing and super interesting variety -- all laid out for you in a big display case. We originally thought we would share one donut, but once we were standing in front of the display case that idea went right out the window. We each chose two of the most enticing (to us) flavors I thinking we would eat one at the shop and take the two remaining donuts home with us. That mostly worked, but we each took a bite out of the one that we were intending to take home. After one bite we knew right away we had never eaten a better donut. The flavor combinations are excellent and the doughy insides and slightly crispy outside were super flavorful. We are not sure if we made a mistake going here our first morning in Oceanside or not. Parlour Doughnuts has been on my radar for years. I'm the outlier compared to everyone else who loves Parlour Doughnuts. I'll talk about why in a minute...first, the store... The store has a great location. Corner shop. Super cute plus it's dog friendly. They even sell dog goodies. There's plenty of seating outside. Want coffee with your donut? Sure! They have a drink menu- regular and foo foo coffee drinks. The employee was really friendly. No problem with the service. So why only two stars? I have my reason...and it's a big one. Maybe we went on an off day, or maybe we went late in the day...and it pains me to say this, but if their donuts are considered 'gourmet donuts' I'll take a corner shop old fashion cake donut over their donut any day of the week. My fiancé ordered a maple bacon donut and I ordered bourbon caramel donut. Neither one of these donuts have holes in them. Not to sound like a donut snob, this is really important to note. When a donut doesn't have a hole in it, the inside of it doesn't cook at the same temperature as the rest of the donut and gets very oily. It's fine when you're filling the donut with something like jelly or custard, but when it's not filled, there needs to be a hole. Yes, I'm addicted to cooking shows. Most of their donuts at Parlor have holes, so I wonder why these two didn't. They weren't filled with anything. After I took one bite into my donut, I knew I wouldn't like it. It's too doughy. The best donuts I have had, period. This place came highly recommended an I am glad I listened. The storefront is pretty basic but definitely classy. The staff were very friendly and conversational. Everything they had on the menu looked great and it took my wife and I the better part of our morning lurking on their website to narrow down what we wanted.
