Don't expect your food to come out fast, but expect it to be delectable, especially when papi is in the house! Love this guy, extremely friendly, salsa bar is phenomenal. I can't get off of the greasy, cheesy deliciousness that is their Beef Chimichanga, but it's just so good topped with their mild salsa. The Food is DELISH. They are by far one of the best restaurants in Paso Robles. The chicken is by far the best. I usually order a chicken Taco Salad. The salsa bar is AWESOME. From the street this place doesn't look like much, but the smell of fresh tortillas brought us in. Being from LA, there are thousands of choices when you want Mexican... and this place is absolutely on par with the best! I have to recommend the shrimp enchiladas. Grew up here and love this place! When I moved down to San Diego, I made sure to stop by here as much as I can! The owner is super nice and still remembers my family and I from high school. Their food is awesome and the portions are more than you need sometimes! I highly recommend the carne asada torta (sin chile) as this is my favorite. Moving to the North East, I haven't seen too many mexican places so I miss this place even more. There are a few tables inside and outside sitting is available where you can have a pet join you. Good weekday crowd at Paso at lunchtime, so we thought we'd give it a try. Hard to mess up basic Mexican fare, right? Well, actually it's pretty easy, if you're heavy-handed on the salt, which is how I'd describe nearly everything we tried! Even the roasted pepper salsa, beautiful deep glowing red--too much salt! Yech! I should be able to taste the smokiness, not the salt. The chili verde burrito, same thing. Bite in, first thing I taste is ... salt! Pretty close to totally ruining an otherwise savory verde. Borderline inedible. Finished about half, had to chase it with a glass of water and a LOT of salsa fresca. Too bad! Service: friendly, good energy. Presentation: hey, it's a burrito, but fine. Composition: perfect combo of verde, some rice, and a small amount of homemade beans. Wait time: not bad, considering small kitchen and size of crowd. Toppings: half-dozen salsas, cilantro, sliced radishes (not pickled), decent selection (except for SALT overdose killing at least one otherwise beautiful salsa). Good salsa fresca (saved the burrito, somewhat). If you go, ASK FIRST to try the sauces/food you want to order. If you can taste the salt, try something else or go somewhere else. I hope the chef reads this review, as the easiest way to kill a dish is with too much salt. Such a BASIC thing! There's a few foods where I like to taste the salt upfront, such as chips, but if I can taste it in the dish on top of the other flavors, it's been ruined, in my opinion. Caveat Emptor! 2 1/2 stars. Good chimichangas , friendly staff however tables were needing to be bussed , floor needed to be swept and tray of dirty dishes in corner needed to be taken away & washed. My food was too salty and the pork was burned. My husbands was too salty also and had zero flavor. Don't waste your time and money.

Food was ok. We ordered torta & fish tacos. Torta was huge, but its taste was not impressive at all, very plain. Sauce used in tacos was ok, and I used salsa on it. I smelled fish. without sauce & salsa, probably it would have smelled more. But their green salsa was good as others said. About service, it was not good. People working there were friendly, but they were extremely SLOW. It was not busy at all when we got there. But we waited our food for 40 min after we ordered. 3 cooks were in the kitchen though. The best Carnitas in the County. I'm a regular (my office is across the street) and Felix knows exactly what I want and has it up in no time. The burritos are very generous, my kids split the kids burrito (standard size at most places) and it's filled with meat, not just a huge helping of rice with a little meat. read more

Can't rate the food - we went in Tuesday evening at about 6:00 - was very busy, sat at the only empty table which was loaded with old food and service items. Finally guy comes out, cleans half the table and he tells us they are really busy, finally comes back and cleans the other half. Again says they are really busy, orders are backed up 30-40 minutes due to take out - clearly trying to discourage us from staying - we took the hint after he kept saying how busy they were and how long orders would take - went to Pappy Mcgregor's instead and had a very pleasant experience with nice servers and good food so shout out to Pappy Mcgregors for appreciating their customers read more

Always good food here, Sometimes the wait will get you but hey its not fast food its good food made to order. Sometimes the place gets a little messy so you have to look beyond that. I have not eaten at a really good authentic Mexican place that was not a little cheesy. GO for it. read more

We grabbed a quick dinner on the way south. Our sopes, pork burrito, and two drinks were about 25 bucks. It seemed a little pricey for the food, but it was still pretty good. I just LOVE this little place - FANTASTIC food, friendly service, and seems to be priced very reasonably. I also find it a big plus that they're right across the street from the Pine Street Saloon. Ha! They did temporarily lose their liquor license (check id's next time guys!), but they are working on getting it back very soon. So yes, I do miss having a Pacifico with my shrimp tacos, but no big deal....I'm often getting it to go and wouldn't get a drink anyway. Some people find it a bit of a pain to go up to the counter and get their food when it's ready, but I don't care about that at all....but I'm not the serve-me, princess type. I always get a chuckle out of Papi himself by the way he says good-bye, he says, "Thank you, see you tomorrow!" With me, he usually does! :) read more

I have never been to another mexican food place (and I love mexican food) that makes a torta like this place. Their carne asada fries are some of the best i've had too. My only complaint is that there are no real hours, so sometimes at lunch time you get there, and they aren't open yet and I starve waiting for them to open, but once its opened up, I am happy and fed :) read more

Papis is absolutely wonderful and a must for anyone looking for authentic mexican food in Paso. There are several places to get mexican food in Paso but none do carnitas or fresh salsa quite like Papis. My husband and I love the flautas, the tacos, and on the weekends: Menudo. I know it isn't for everyone, but if you're a menudo fan you can't get better menudo in town then here. read more

I absolutely LOVE this place. My husband and I have been coming here since 2005 and Felix always knows it's me when I call in an order. There is no shortage of Mexican restaurants in Paso whether they are holes in the wall or complete sit down experiences but Papis has something for everyone and they keep it simple. They're close to downtown (like a block away from the park). Our go-to meal always is burritos but Felix has won awards for his pork tacos. Hailed by Sunset magazine and recently won "best of the best" for Mexican food in paso, Papis offers full servings of a variety of Mexican food with fresh ingredients. You can pick up (faster) or dine in. There is patio seating with great people watching views. Order at the counter, get your own beer from the self serve cooler or a cold soda, find a table and relax. Your name will be called when your food is ready. Friendly staff adds to the awesomeness. This is a great place to grab food to go for watching a parade downtown or to take to park and chill under an oak tree. My husband raves about the chicken burritos and gorditas but I can't seem to venture past the rice, bean and cheese burritos. FYI, they're closed on Mondays. read more

Using Yelp we discovered a sandwich worth making us a regular! The Torta Ahogada was amazing. I have to talk about this roll! It was like a brioche, brushed with seasoned olive oil, then dusted with a dry seasoned chili rub, grilled to perfection and loaded with succulent, non greasy carnitias, tomatoes, lettuce and grated cheddar. Love their salsa bar. the pico de gallo was amazing had a nice spicy kick. This place knows how to use salt yay! I had a veggie burrito wet which was amazing. I also had a chile relleno which I couldn't eat because it wasn't what I expected, it was a chile in an omelette. My husband ordered a chalupa and said the meat was pretty good. this is definitely a local's spot with a nice group of regulars. and you're definitely not coming here for the ambiance (unless broken arcade machines is your idea of elegant decor). this is down and dirty mexican food, done right. my wife got tacos (which were done street style with just meat on a tortilla, add your own condiments like diced onions and tapatio) which were awesome. i got a carne asada torta, excellent! it was huge, and they actually put hot sauce on the top of the bun rather than in the sandwich -- what a brilliant messy delight. and the chips and salsa were great -- generous portions and salty pico de gallo salsa, loved it. oh yeah, and liquor license is still suspended. read more

I went twice in two days - it was that good! The shrimp cocktail is in a five scoop ice cream bowl and has enough for the whole dining room. They poach the shrimp in a tomato broth and you can get octopus, too. If you really really like octopus, then you will love this. Next time maybe I would just get the shrimp. Also, shrimp tacos for $3 - fabulous. Handmade corn tortilla, plenty of lettuce and guac and sour cream. Anything seafood here is awesome. The burritos are plate sized. Nice, fresh salsa bar. No cocktails, and a good 20 minute wait, but the food is fresh and authentic and very good. Don't fill up on chips! Go down the block to Crooked Kilt and ask Ian to make you a hand crafted margarita when you have eaten all you can. read more

Great little hole in the wall hideaway. It was later in the evening so there weren't many customers. The service was very friendly and the food made fresh. I had the carnitas with a side of verde sauce. The verde was fabulous! The freshly made salsas were an excellent compliment to the fresh tortilla chips. I would go again! read more
