Maaaannnn papis used to be SO good!!! Well I'm really glad that there are a lot of five stars because maybe it was just not a fit for us to which I feel comped to express for other families that might have children...... I don't like seeing myself relate to one stars, two stars, or other three star reviews here, but I do find myself understanding what they might be talking about. I do have to say one of the meals out of four was pretty good! Really didn't like that They charge for chips and salsa. I think that should just be standard personally when you go into any Mexican restaurant. Much like Italian restaurants that give you baskets of bread, kind of thing. La Mexicana doesn't charge. Anyway, very, very crunchy items almost a bit overdone. Plastic cups for water, the sodas were a little bit flat. Very sweet. I don't know how a 12-year-old complains on a bean rice and cheese burrito but somehow my 12-year-old did. She's not hard to please. She said her stomach was killing her after dinner. Spilled a little bit of water, was willing to do the right thing and ask for a towel. We were given a damp towel to clean up the mess. Not much hospitality. Kind of cafeteria style. Forgot items on our order, told me she didn't ring us up for the items I ordered...... Cross checked with the husband that I ordered them... he said yes...... Because I actually went there for that purpose of those items. Charged our card for forgotten items (beans and rice) and we had to wait a little bit before the items came out. I know it sounds silly, but we actually had Spanish rice and refried beans at our house. The whole purpose was not to have to cook, I had a long day and I was tired. But when I got my items, bland... Overpriced for the portion size... Felt like I should've just stayed home. Meh. All I have to say is California happens to be a hotspot for Mexican food. I'm really happy that we live here and we should be able to go to our downtown neighborhood and get what we pay for. Even if it's the basics like burritos, rice, beans, chips... I have been to Papi's a couple of times. If you have not read one of my reviews before, you should know that I am very particular about my Mexican food. When you look at my reviews, you will see almost all are 5 star. That is because I hate writing bad reviews. So, chances are, if I'm writing a review, I was pretty impressed, or extremely unimpressed. Papi's as a restaurant is just what you want in a counter order Taqueria. It's a hole in the wall. There are tables, the requisite mexican decorations, a self serve Soda machine, and a counter with the kitchen visible behind it. The kitchen is usually staffed by one cook, and he occasionally also runs the counter. The first time I went to Papi's, I got a Chile Relleno and Cheese Enchilada combo with Rice & Beans. It was decent, but not to the level where I wanted to write a review. However, my friend ordered the Torta Ahogada, and I was fascinated. Mow, I've had my share of Tortas, but this one looked special. Since then, I've been back twice just for the Torta Ahogada, once to sus it out, and a second time to make sure I wasn't dreaming. The last time was on August 25th, 2024. I ordered the Torta Ahogada with Carnitas. The thing about this Torta is that they put sauce on the flat top and grill the outside of the bread. Inside is a copius quantity of Carnitas, Shredded Lettuce, Tomato Slices, Avocado, Onion, and Mayonnaise. Some people may not like the Mayo. Some may not like the Onion. Some may not like spicy Bread that burns your lips. However, the combination of all these things in this Torta is magical. I cannot say more. My wife ordered Carnitas and Carne Asada Tacos and enjoyed them. They have a good selection of homemade Salsas. read more

My Husband and I stopped in to Papi's after our stay at Treebones Resort. The food was delicious and good portion sizes, different salsa options etc. Not only was the food good, but the employee's and owner were amazing. I accidentally left my purse at the restaurant and I live in the Central Valley. The employee's and owner went out of their way to keep my purse safe and mailed it back to me so I would not have to drive 4.5 hours back to retrieve it. Great little Mexican joint right near downtown Paso. We tried the La Enchilada Chida and the Steak Ranchero. The salsa bar is really nice and full of fresh items. Limes, cilantro, jalapeno, and like 5 or 6 fresh salsas. We tried the pico, the house red, and the green. The green was amazing as well as the pico. The enchilada special was huge!!! Full of juicy shredded chicken, rice, beans, and cheese. It was really flavorful and everything thing I hoped In an enchilada! Steak Ranchero was tender bits of beef in a sauce with onions and peppers. Also really tasty! Service was excellent! Wow. We are passing through town from San Diego to San Francisco for a night- and we eat a lot of good Mexican food- and Papi's blew us away! We ordered to our hotel and picked a carne asada burrito, a chili relleno plate and quesadillas for the kids. We were blown away by the flavor and quality of all the food- even when delivered to our hotel. As we saw this on the search, we were like "Why haven't we tried this yet? We went to this place and I got to say its a great place. There was no one waiting as we got in. I ordered the chicken quesadilla with chips. My mom ordered the . I also ordered a drink. They have a soda dispenser and also a salsa bar. I have to say that after we took it home, we were hungry. My quesadilla was pretty good while my mom enjoyed her chile relleno and crispy tacos. She would've be better if she got some salsa that had more of a kick. She got the mild salsa. I want to start out by saying that I have been eating at Papi's for years and have usually had a really good experience and the food is amazing. Felix (the owner) is an amazing cook and prepare the best food in town..... I went in there today for lunch and ordered a burrito.....mind you, I am on my lunch and have to get back to work. I'm thinking that it shouldn't take too long since there is only one table with people and they are eating. I waited 20 minutes for my burrito. I watched as they made all this food in the kitchen, burritos, tacos, enchiladas....where's mine I wondered? I am guessing these were all to go orders which is all well and fine, but I am there...standing and waiting. Then I get my burrito and there are 3 salsas (which are amazing) in the bag but no chips.....NO CHIPS. After I get back to my office I call and ask about the chips and I am told they are extra. They didn't ask me if I wanted chips when I ordered....so that was odd. I went online and looked at the menu and couldn't find chips anywhere. Nowhere are there chips and no price for chips. The burrito was not what the menu described. There were no beans....no a single one. and no cheese.....is the cheese also extra? if so, then ask if we want cheese when we order. Our party of 4 ordered from the register and we're able to sit in the dining room among tables that were cordoned off for social distancing. Unfortunate for a Mexican place. Entrees were great! We had 2 orders of enchiladas that were described favorably. The burritos are HUGE. Think twice the size of a Chipotle burrito. My pozole and tacos al pastor were outstanding! The pozole had a rich tomato broth that was slightly spicy. It came with cilantro, onions and limes. I didnt need the extra chili oil. Overall this place was so disappointing. The service was terrible. There was no greeting & nobody welcomed us, we were just told get your menus and come up and order when you're ready. The food was soooo bland, probably worst Comida Mexicana I've ever tasted? Maybe we just came on an off day, but shrimp had no garlic flavor, idk what the yellow seasoning was but i had to add salt just to get the shrimp flavor to come out. The beans tasted sour, old...not fresh and they used a lot of shredded cheese possibly to over the taste but even the shredded cheese had some kind of powder on it? The enchiladas were even more disappointing bc the tortilla wasn't even fried so it was dry and stale. The sauce had no Chile flavor, very tomato like? The cheese inside was not melted, it was just chunks of cheese. Chile Colorado had no Chile flavor...again had to add salt to being out beef flavor! We're not from the area...we found this on Yelp, had 4 starts and trusted it to be good.
