With all the options in Paso it's tough to pick a restaurant but we're SO glad we chose the alchemists' garden. The pork chop is a mandatory order. Generous portion with a to die for lemon vinaigrette. At the suggestion of our wonderful server Cassie we paired it with the mushrooms for the perfect meal. We were greeted by a server- Dom- who convinced us to stay with his wonderful selections on the menu. I'm a clarified cocktail fan and their milk punch was on of the best that I've had. We had such an incredible experience at Alchemists' Garden celebrating my husband's birthday! From the moment we arrived, everything exceeded our expectations. Our server, Danny, truly made the evening special. He was welcoming, friendly, attentive, and had such positive energy throughout the night. We had our little ones with us, and he was incredibly accommodating and patient, making sure everyone at the table felt taken care of. It's rare to find service that feels so genuine, and Danny absolutely knocked it out of the park. The food was phenomenal from start to finish. We started with the bone marrow appetizer and turned it into a luge--which was such a fun experience! We also ordered a basket of fries with the goat cheese ranch for the kids, and even those were amazing. For our entrées, we had the Pork Chop Milanese, the Wagyu steak, and the Etto Truffle Pasta. Every single dish was beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. It's hard to pick a favorite because they were all outstanding. The cocktails deserve a special mention because they were an experience all on their own. We ordered the whiskey-forward cocktails, with one arriving in a smoke-filled box and the other presented in a lit, smoke-filled chest. The presentation was theatrical, creative, and so much fun while still delivering incredible flavor. To top it all off, Danny surprised us with sparkling wine to celebrate my husband's birthday, which was such a thoughtful and memorable touch. We got there a little early for our reservation and they weren't quite ready for us yet, so they offered us a glass of bubbles while we waited. Such a sweet touch right off the bat. Our server was incredible, so friendly and made sure we wanted for nothing the entire time. The manager even came by to check in on us personally. And the sommelier was kind enough to put together a non alcoholic wine tasting for our pregnant friends in the group, which I thought was such a thoughtful touch. I ordered the cabbage and it was delicious. The sauce was amazing and the textures from all the different ingredients worked so well together. It was surprisingly filling too. I'd order it again in a heartbeat. One person in our group ordered the steak and a few pieces came out more rare than she would have liked. She still ate most of it and was genuinely fine with it, but when the manager checked in and asked about it, he sent out two desserts to make up for it anyway. I can only review on drinks since that's the only reason why I went. We got a walk in and sat at the bar. My first drink was the garden spear (coffee cup picture) and for $17 of a premixed cocktail, I was disappointed. You get very little drink specially because they added a large ice cube. I then tried the "Know your kava roots" which is Al alternative drink meaning you get a numbing sensation from drinking it. Great for cocktails, but less so for dinner. My friend booked The Alchemists' Garden for her birthday dinner. She had originally made the reservation for 9 people, but 2 of our friends were unable to make it on the trip. We contacted the restaurant as soon as they opened for the day, but they were unwilling to refund the deposit for those 2 people and offered to send over prosecco and popcorn instead. Personally, I found that to be inflexible, considering we were still planning to dine as a large party and spend a significant amount of money. When we arrived, we were seated on the (dog-friendly) patio. The ambiance was a bit cooler inside, but it had a nice calm vibe. I was the designated driver, but my friends all ordered cocktails. This was the best part of our experience! The best ones I tasted were the Aires and Theory of Forms, but my friends absolutely loved the Nicolas Flamel and Alchemists Gold. For food, we got an order of the Deviled Eggs to start with, but these were not my favorite. However, the Hamachi Sashimi was phenomenal. I wish the portion size was a bit more substantial, but the flavor and texture were perfect. I also really liked the Bone Marrow appetizer. Opinions were extremely mixed on our other food items. The Waygu New York Strip, Skirt Steak, and Truffled Cacio e Pepe were the winners, but the Croquettes, Pesto Vegetable Lasagna, and Pan Seared Halibut were not. Service was friendly but slow-paced, and the meal really dragged on for me. We also expressed that we were celebrating a birthday both in the booking and during the dinner, but they did not send over a birthday dessert. All my friend got was a postcard with the check. Some are good but plenty are just trying to make a quick buck trying to present like they're something they're not. The Alchemists' Garden is the real deal. More than that, it's a unicorn because it had both amazing drinks and really really good food. The entire time we were here all I could think about was how much I wished it was closer to home and planning on how to come back. Let's get into it. For food we ordered the Tea Tray, the steak with fries, and the chicken sandwich. The fries were incredible. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly crispy with enough fluff on the inside. The chicken sandwich was also surprisingly good. Great combination of flavors and good bun ratio. The tea tray was a bit mixed, with great cucumber sandwiches, great deviled eggs, and amazing cookies, but some of the other pastries were undercooked with raw and mushy dough. For drinks we got the Esoteric Mood (which was my favorite and incredibly well balanced), the Theory of Form (which was bright and refreshing), the Know Your Roots (which was good but weakest of the four), and the Alchemists Gold (which started as a smoke show and ended as a really good old fashioned). The little guy got a strawberry lemonade, which he loved and scarfed down. The service was fantastic. Danny, our waiter, was really attentive without being too much. The waiter even asked if the drink was good as he noticed it had been left basically untouched. My friend said no and he said, "oh sorry." That's it. There was no offer to remake the drink. This place was recommended by the group I was with (they've done this trip a few times), and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The vibe is perfect - cozy, speakeasy-ish, and the kind of place you can just post up belly-up at the bar and stay awhile. Great energy without being over the top. From the moment we walked in, the service stood out. Aubrey set the tone right away - super welcoming and made us feel like regulars from the start. Behind the bar, Matt and Justice were incredible. You can tell they take pride in what they're doing, and it shows in every drink. Honestly, the entire crew is a big reason we kept coming back. I've been to Alchemists Garden a few times with mixed reactions each time. It is a great cocktail bar with a lot of unique mixes & all the standards (albeit pricey, $16-20). It's is beautifully done, and great for a special gathering for drinks. What is suspect is the menu and the food -- a bit odd and overpriced. Charred Cabbage is an entree. Great to have vegan options, but come on. They do have (and they beefed it up in recent months), a fish ($44), a steak ($65), a pork chop ($48), and a couple of pastas ($32-34). Those are good options, for sure, but for a tourists and special occasions -- for locals, it's not for everyday. I recently went for Taco Tuesday...$6 street tacos. They don't have carnitas or any pork (my fav), but they do have shrimp, steak, and a couple of unique ones -- duck, mushroom. They were high quality for the price, and 2-3 will do ya. My party of 6 all ordered, and all were lukewarm or cold. Tony (great guy, manager) re-ordered all and had them made somewhat pronto. So, I don't quite know. Having gone a few times, I shouldn't still wonder what to say about a place. Overpriced? Good for cocktails? Nice ambience? Great vibe in the bar and streetside patio? Yes, all true. Came over Valentine's Day weekend and thankful we booked a reservation. The space is beautiful with live plants and a tall dining area. The staff were super friendly, from the hosts, our server, the food runner, and even the manager (well, actually one of the co-founders Tony). My husband ordered an off-menu Arnold Palmer and I had a glass of red wine. We started the meal with a Bunch of Fries - wide and crispy, perfect for dipping in their yummy homemade sauces (goat cheese ranch and a well-worth-it up charge side of chimichurri). We split the Fall Pasta (so good!) - al dente tubular pasta (rigatoni?) with delicious roasted squash, zucchini, kale, and sage. We also ordered the Mushroom Medley - earthy mushrooms over peppery arugula and tossed in a sweet chili garlic sauce. You can taste the farm-to-table freshness and ripeness. Regrettably, we didn't leave room for dessert as we had a few cocktails around the corner before coming...but they looked scrumptious. I ordered the tourist drink, it was served in a mushroom glass rimmed with a delicious blend of sugar and maybe truffle salt and topped with a flower. It was delicious! However, I wouldn't have known I was missing something if my friends, who went the day before, didn't share their experience. Theirs came to the table with smoke inside the glass. Their server added dried mushrooms and another liquid that intensify the smoke it was really cool to see but I didn't get that experience but pay the same price. - food. We ordered fries, bone marrow and pan seared halibut. The fries are skinny steak fries and was the best tasting of my order. Bone marrow prepared with cherry onion jam and chocolate sea salt, I only taste of the cherries which was abundant and tasted like raisins. The bone was shallow so there wasn't a whole lot of marrow and it was gelatinous. At the price of $36 it was a huge disappointment the halibut was nicely cooked but it wasn't seared, it was just OK. At $44 I wouldn't order it again The Taurus and the bone marrow were suggested by the server. I always expect those suggestions to be a highlight item on their menu but I felt underwhelmed and then later disappointed when we met up with our friends. We still tipped well because our server, Michelle, was delightful and I like talking with her. She tried to make up for the bone marrow. I might come back just for drinks but have it at the bar so we can get the real experience, and their fries. But definitely not coming back here for a Saturday night dinner read more

Once for lunch and once for dinner and both experiences were absolutely outstanding. The food is farm-to-table at its finest. We tried the tomato and burrata, the mushroom appetizer, halibut, lasagna, and the pork chop, and every single dish was top notch. Fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. My mother has a sensitive stomach and she remarked how the food was of high quality given how she felt that night and next day. Don't skip the drinks either, Fifth Heaven is a must-order. What also sets this place apart is the staff.. from entrance to exit, everyone was warm, friendly, and genuinely accommodating. A special shoutout to Danny, who went above and beyond to make our visits memorable. And if you're a dog owner, you'll love The Alchemist Garden because it is very dog friendly, with a lovely patio with a view of the square where your fur baby is welcome to join you. Every bite was delicious and I loved the truffle parmesan aioli on top. It smelled great coming to our table and it was amazing all the way through. This was my favorite! 5/5 DEVILED EGGS ($16) - these were good in their own right but they came out with the croquettes and were a bit overshadowed. I liked the taste of the curry and turmeric in the filling and these were still yummy. 4/5 18OZ PORK CHOP MILANESE ($50) - we didn't realize how big the portions were but it was massive and we had to take some home. It was crispy on the exterior and had tons of flavor. I also liked the arugula and the lemon to balance out the pork. I'm a beef person by default and I couldn't really decide whether I preferred the pork or steak more which I think speaks to just how delicious the pork was. 5/5 8OZ SKIRT STEAK ($48) - the steak was also flavorful and I really liked the chimichurri on top. I didn't care for the sweet potato puree and the portion size could be bigger but it was still really good. 4.5/5 For drinks I ordered the esoteric mood ($19) and the alchemists gold ($22). The esoteric mood was clarified, easy to drink, and had lots of spice notes from the cloves and cinnamon. The alchemists gold was a riff off the old fashioned and had a cool presentation to boot. If you have to wait for a table they have a bar area and there are other bars on the street to pass the time. I'm giving 4 stars for the drinks; this was my second visit, and the cocktails are consistently solid and well made. However, I specifically want to comment on their NYE party. I was visiting Paso Robles for a few days and needed a place to ring in the New Year, so we decided to check out Alchemists. Unfortunately, the tables were sold out, but we were offered general admission for $21 each. We thought that would be fine, but for the price there were no seats, no party favors, no champagne toast, and the waitstaff wasn't particularly friendly. The staff checking guests in mostly stood at the entrance watching people rather than engaging with guests or helping create a fun atmosphere, which made the experience feel awkward and unwelcoming. If this is an annual event, a coat check would also be a huge improvement, especially since it was raining and cold on New Year's Eve. Overall, I didn't feel welcomed and wouldn't recommend this event to others. The price of drinks was also quite high; some deals would have been nice for NYE. That said, for dining and enjoying great cocktails, I would recommend this restaurant. read more

Stumbled upon this spot while searching for a restaurant with a variety of options, and it ended up being such a fun find. I wasn't sure if it was celebrating Pride Month, simply LGBTQ+ friendly, or specifically an LGBTQ+ establishment, but there were flags throughout the bar area and outside. They were delicious. We then had the oysters, which were the the daily special. I could've eaten dozens of them. For our main, we ordered the ribeye special. This was actually the low point of our meal. The steak was extremely fatty and was served with the smallest side of asparagus and sweet mashed potatoes. We were looking for a place to have an early dinner in Paso Robles, and the menu looked interesting. Also, I remember seeing the name when I was looking for restaurants in Paso Robles. Since we got there around 4 pm, they were still serving the lunch menu, but mentioned that they would be switching to dinner. There were plenty of interesting selections on the lunch menu. The deviled eggs were outstanding. I really enjoyed the vegetarian banh mi as well. The waiter did mention that it was a bit light and you could add a protein if you wanted, but I was looking for a light meal, so it was perfect. I really liked the cocktail I had - the Hugo spritz. It was light and refreshing. We ate on the covered patio, which was really nice. I did notice they even have some seating that faces out to the square, which is kind of cool if you want to people watch. Service was great. I would definitely come back to try other things on the menu and additional cocktails. read more
