Great Food, Deceiving Menu Pricing Today was my second and last time eating at Panera's. Oh, don't get me wrong, the food was good. Not great, but good. What has turned me against Panera's is the deceptive menu pricing. When you look at the Menu Boards (see photo) there is a "PICK 2" on there, which states "Combine Two Items" and the pricing is $4.59/4.99/7.99, depending on the size. Great, a lot of food for just a little money. Nope. By the time we had ordered two items and a drink, the bill came to $23.35. I asked a manager over to our table when I realized I had been taken. She apologized, stating that lots of people are decieved by the board; that it is a reduced price per item. Now, how in the hell is $5 for a 1/2 cup of mac & cheese a reduced price? Attached is a copy of the receipt. Understand, I am a capitalist; I believe in making money. However, in all my years of being either IN business for working for others, I have never intentionally deceived a customer. Panera's seems to have made it a skill. Our meal total should have been about $14 plus tax - I can not believe they are allowed to do business this way. It is wrong, it is deceptive - bordering on fraud and theft. While the food was good, I had better mac and cheese at Golden Corral; for far less money. My steak and Cheese Pannini was so thin on meat that I had to open it up to see if there actually was meat in the sandwich - my first two bites yielded nothing but bread and melted cheese. After we had eaten, my wife needed the powder room, and I was clearing off our table; the manager, in her zeal to open up another table, took our not-yet empty drinks, receipt, etc and trashed them. I thanked her for tossing our unfinished drinks and our receipt; she retrieved the receipt from the trash can (yuk!) and made a copy of it over top the broth bowel prep chart, (talk about handing out company secrets!) and offered us two more cups; we passed, and told her we would not be back. Exactly why is everyone fawning over this place? Do you have enough money to throw it away for the same stuff you can get cheaper elsewhere? And to be deceived on top of that? This is my go-to place when I'm trying to pretend I'm being healthy for not going to some fast food joint with a drive thru. But it's really not the *best* for your health. But is anything anymore? *hint* No, nothing is. Anyway, a frequent complaint I have of this location is the line. I've worked in food and customer service and I can tell when the line is moving slow because of ridiculous customers or just slow moving employees. I will usually avoid ordering at the register because 1) Social anxiety 2) The wait. The self service kiosks are an incredible innovation on Panera's part. It lets you order your super complicated food with all the modifications your heart could desire without having to mumble and stutter out of embarrassment in front of an employee. But don't get me wrong, when I DO order from a cashier, they are always pleasant, patient, and helpful. I am just an impatient and socially terrified person. Once I finally find a seat amidst all the teens who just got out of school next door (there are A TON of high schoolers here after noon, so just keep that in mind), I wait with my little buzzer thingy. My food is usually prompt and brought to me by someone with more of the excellent customer service I've come to expect from this location. My food is always accurate. I've been going here for probably ten years now and I honestly can't remember a time when they've messed up my order here. While I would love to give this location four stars rather than three, I can't really bring myself to because of their cleanliness. I understand that the lunch rush is crazy and again, high school kids, but none of this is a new development. The tables are almost always covered in crumbs and various other remnants from the last person's meal. It's really unappealing and unappetizing. I don't mind wiping crumbs off once in a while, but when I've come to expect it and don't even bother trying to find a clean table since I know there most likely isn't one, I get a little irritated. Another great option with Pantera in general is their online ordering. Every time I've utilized this service, I've waited the appropriate amount of time they ask you allot them, and when I go in, my food is ready and still warm. It's a pretty organized and easy system to utilize. So, all in all, this is a solid establishment. Food is consistent. Employees know how to treat a customer well. The line can be a bit obscene. And the clean factor here is definitely missing. I will continue to frequent this establishment and if I notice a change in their cleanliness, I'll definitely update this review because I really want to give them a higher rating. read more

All Panera Bread locations I've been to are generally the same. The one on Virginia Beach Blvd. is no exception. The service is okay, the food is decent, and the place is populated with laptop-users who are looking for something outside of Starbucks. I've never been very impressed by the food. The sandwiches tend to have WAY to much bread, and I realize that the place literally means "Bread Shop" in Spanish, but all the same, there is a limit to how think the bread should be on a sandwich I think. The flavors of the sandwiches are completely drowned out by the amount of bread that dampens the taste buds. The Frontega is probably the best offering here. I would avoid the Cuban Sandwich though--there is chicken on it, and the pickles are way too sweet. It does nothing for the reputation of the Cubano, which is far and away my favorite sandwich of all time. The coffee is fresh and good. I have no complaints there. I usually go with their Hazelnut blend, but all of the roasts are pretty decent. I think my favorite feature of the place though is the free WiFi. This, to me, is a great feature for a coffee shop to offer. One word of warning though: during the lunch rush and the dinner rush, you can only use the WiFi for 30 minutes. I suppose your IP address is recorded and you're blocked after 30 min. The reason for this must be to free up tables during the busiest hours. read more

A good little place for a sandwich and cup of soup. The staff was friendly and the service was quick. You can order ahead and your order will be ready if you're in a hurry. I had the all-American Classic of grilled cheese and tomato soup. It was definitely on the gourmet side with fontina cheese and homemade tomato soup. This one of my favorite comfort food dinners and they did it right. My friend had the ham and swiss on wheat with a bowl of Spanish stew. The bread was fresh and soft and the stew was pretty good. It did need a little Tabasco to spice it up but the meal combo was good. Overall this is a good little chain that does a good job. I especially appreciate the fact they bake on site. It not a place I would long for but I would find an excuse to not come here. read more

I have been to this location multiple times before and I have yet to be let down by them. Had a couple of close calls with them wanting to put regular yogurt in my Superfruit Smoothie (it takes Greek-and I ask for extra)-but their food orders are always on point-especially when I throw them curveballs. The facilities are always clean-even during rush hour. The only thing I would suggest is maybe making the entrance way a little wider-it seems like you are packing hens in the chicken wire during rush hours. The order takers are always cordial-even though I tend to opt for the online ordering with the app now. The managers in the back pretty much force the orders to be correct-meaning the staff is effective in their training. I ordered the Chicken Caesar with a Sprouted Grain Roll-got the dressing and cheese on the side-and ordered through the app. I was not expecting g the order to be correct, especially since I added a ton of veggies and stuff. I was very pleasantly surprised at the perfect accuracy of my order. I will definitely be back to this location-and I am confident my orders will be how I want them. I am not really crazy about this place. However, as a chain, the food is very decent and average. The selection of sandwiches, salad and soups are quite delightful. Food presentation and portion are equivalent to the price. The pick 2 combo ( sandwich / salad / soup / stew / flat bread / apple ) is a saver. I must say that I am looking forward to try the sweet delicacies they offer. In my recent visit, I had the pick 2 combo consisting of a smoked ham and swiss sandwich and Spanish Chicken stew. Thought it was fine and just right for dinner. Service is spectacular, food comes out fast. Would love to see healthy options be better shown on the menu. Yes, I would love to come back. read more

Panera bread has fresh tasting food. The kind of food you eat when you dont want to regret it 20 minutes later. They have a list of I think 60(or more) "ingredients" that they don't use in their food. As for the validitity of this claim I'm not sure, but what I am sure of is that it tastes good. My only issue that ive ever had with Panera is the price. For 5 people (2 adults 3 kids) it ended up being about $45. read more

I get the Thai Chicken Salad. Pros: the sauce is the perfect amount of spice, and the seared soy beans. Cons: the lettuce is blah romain (spinach and other blends with romain would be better), very few red peppers. This salad is my go to item, but it has a lot of calories. You can cut down the calories by removing the crunchy wonton and skipping the baguette. Although the order taking is handled well, you might not see those instructions followed. I just sign in with my Panera card phone number, and it'll notify me of treats and stuff I've earned when I'm about to check out. If you're dining in, grab a pager, and your order will be brought out to you. I typically only snag breakfast here when I wake up early before my commute to Chesapeake. I will buy a dozen bagels for the bagel Tuesday deal (-$3.00 regular price at $6.99), and freeze half for the next week. Pop it in the microwave for a few seconds, and it'll be as good as new when you take it out the freezer. My favorite bagels are the cinnamon crunch and asiago. I am not a big fan of their cream cheese because you can buy a container of whipped cream cheese at the grocery for a $1.00 more than the 2 oz. container they throw in the bag with your bagel. It isn't anything special because it isn't made in-house like other local bagel shops. Customer service is superb. It's typically empty when I'm in and out in the mornings, but the crew seems pretty lively. The display is well-stocked in the mornings. Their treats are amazing, but I've watched them shrink in size throughout the years. I'll be back for breakfast when I'm not in a rush though~ read more

Panera is an absolute gem! This location has never let me down. The restaurant is always really clean, even after a lunch rush. The seats are cozy, the staff is helpful and pleasant, and the food is always great! I usually order the Mediterranean veggie sandwich. The sun-dried tomato bread it comes on is to die for, and you can purchase most loaves there for about 5 bucks! The mac n cheese is also mouthwatering, and you can never go wrong with a soup. Or a pasta. Or a salad. Or a giant cookie... Okay, so all of their food is just really really good! And they deliver now? Be still, my heart! This location has table service too! You receive a pager with your receipt and they bring your food right to your table. So you don't have to get up while you're browsing Instagram, or erm, studying. They also have a really good health inspection record, if you're into that sort of thing. read more

This is the absolute worst location I have ever ordered from! I use this location while working, my order is never right if I've modified anything, or I just get sub par food, and ridiculously long delivery times. It's super disappointing because I LOVE panera and order from a location closer to home all the time. I have continued to order from this location just thinking maybe they were just having an off day once or twice, but I know realize that this location just isn't operating at the level of service standards of other locations. This is one of my favorite "fast casual" restaurants. There is a selection of gluten free (yes, gluten free), low-fat, freshly made relatively healthy food. The soups and salads are my favorites. And they have good ice tea that is unsweetened. I love the choice of an apple as a side with the meal. For those who can eat gluten, the bread and desserts are good. The bagels are just bagel-shaped rolls, I would avoid. Try the egg sandwich for breakfast instead. read more

With ample seating and consistent service, this Panera venue is my favorite one in the area. I find other Paneras here to be quite cramp at times but I really enjoy this one. That said, its quite hard to find inconsistencies with food when it comes to Panera in general since Panera is the same across the board when it comes to food. I think from time to time, you can get a salad with soggy croutons or a soup that is served a notch below warm but I've yet to experience that from this Panera. For the tea, I specified British breakfast tea... and they brought me Earl Grey and green tea... not that big of a deal. But, the spinach & artichoke souffle was burnt to a crisp. I go here almost everyday after school since my school is so close! Love the food and the staff is very nice. It's very loud and busy though, especially when school lets out at 2:10-2:15, so I highly recommend avoiding this place then if you can't handle a noisy environment. It's very quite in the mornings and late in the afternoons though. My only complaint about this place is the lack of professionalism many of the employees show. I understand that they many are high school kids and this is probably their first job, but the staff shouldn't be laughing and talking louder than an entire restaurant of people. Then again, like I said, they are teenagers who probably have this as their first job so I wouldn't be too harsh. read more

Went here today for lunch and ordered the Baja grain bowl without feta or chicken. The first bowl came to the table loaded with feta cheese. They promptly took it back and returned with another bowl about 15 minutes later. The time didn't bother me because they were very busy, but the second bowl had chicken. At this point I said I would just pick the chicken out. The girl that brought the bowl to the table said she would let the manager know, because this had been going on all day. I come here regularly because it's close to work and they have healthier options than your usual fast food fare. I usually get a pick two with either broccoli cheddar soup with a salad (favorite is fuji apple salad) or sandwich (turkey avocado BLT or steak & arugula). Soups are consistently good. My winter favorite is the autumn squash. This is a busy location and have occasionally gotten my order wrong but the manager's have been terrific and will usually rectify the situation immediately or comp the order. Restaurant is clean. They advertised one of their products as a full size and when I got it with delivery it was deceitfully small. And it cost the same amount as a regular sized cookie. I LOVE the creamy tomato soup, I would drink it by the gallons if they would serve it to me. The asiago cheese croutons are the proverbial "icing on the cake" for this soup. You should always order the baguette as your side because you can use it to soak up your soup and munch away. I also LOVE their green tea, I just wish it wasn't so expensive or at least I could get 1 free refill. read more

Hard to not like Panera. Easy corner access location, with enough nearby parking. Like most locations they now have the installed Kiosks to make your order "Faster". Personally, I think there are way too many menu options and the system for selecting things is complex. There's also no way to say, "I want X for here, and Y to go." So I've been bypassing them. What IS nice is it saves previous orders, so if you're a creature of habit, spend some time putting in your most favorite complex order, and it'll be there next time. Service is always expedient and courteous, the facility is kept clean, I've never gone into the dining area and saw a dirty table (which is saying something). It's one of the two best fast-food chains out there, hard to go wrong with Panera. read more

First of all, I would like to say that I hope this location and/or Panera actually reads these reviews so things can get better and easier for customer pickup. I ordered breakfast to be picked up on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. First of all, I don't know how they can be out of all of their easy-over egg sandwiches but anyways...I ordered a coffee drink and breakfast sandwich and picked instore pickup. I arrived at 7:30 am, went straight to the pick up area and nothing was there. I checked the digital sign that says if they are preparing an order and nothing was there. I sat on the bench for a couple minutes and saw a couple bags sitting on the kitchen counter. I saw an employee walk over there pick one up and walk off with it. She also walked by me and didnt ask if she could help me with anything...it was obvious I was waiting for something...I guess it was too early in the morning?! I saw that another bag and drink were up there, so I went over to the kitchen counter and low and behold...it was mine! During COVID, etc...it would be nice and easy for your customers to locate their food and drink items if you put them where they are supposed to be. And when I left the employees were all chatting away at the bakery registry and no one said anything to me. I like Panera but it will be a while before I visit this location again... read more

Panera has to be one of my favorite places to grab a quick lunch from. The customer service is always great and they serve your food FAST even when it's busy. The place is also always clean! I'm a huge fan of their broccoli cheddar soup in a bread bowl and the chipotle chicken panini. If you haven't tried the soup, you're missin out! Grab a large iced green tea while you're there and you're set! Also, sign up for the membership! I always get great discounts and free pastries because of it. read more

After going here multiple times before. I am disappointed in the food quality of today's meal. Both me and my girlfriend got Mac n cheese. The cheese sauce which is normally creamy was very gritty. We could tell it was microwaved because it was steaming hot for 15 min before we could eat it. read more
