Fusion Thai Food In Hackettstown, NJ! I've been going to this restaurant ever since it opened some years ago. It's located on the corner of Main Street which is convenient and easy to get to. I like most of the dishes on the menu that I've tried. One of my favorites is the Yellowfin Tuna Pomegranite Salad which is unique and well made. The food here is different from most Thai restaurants in that the recipes are mixed with a Western style of cooking and are more palatable to some who have never tried Thai cuisine before. Besides regular Thai food they also serve an asiago cheeseburger for instance. I strongly recommend this restaurant to everyone in Warren County, NJ because there aren't any other restaurants nearby quite like it. I ordered take-out and when I arrived home with my anticipated items that I had viewed online which were Roti Canai, and Thaiella I was extremely disappointed. The chicken container was filled with less than 1/4 portion and dry. I could not dip my roti. The Thaiella was also a dry mush that was equivalent to a packet of Knorr's rice. It contained 2 shrimp and 1 measly piece of fish. It also was non palatable. I spoke to a manager who transferred me to a very disrespectful cook who refused to allow me to explain respectfully. He stated "okay" so want do you want? Next time I give you more Roti? He refused to hear me out. Blatant disregard for customer service. False advertising of the food in the picture. Very defensive, rude and unapologetic folks. NEVER AGAIN! read more

My son and I love this place. The only thing we can review is the Saturday and Sunday Dim Sum Brunch. Very reasonably priced, clean, delicious food and a very friendly staff. If you have never tried Dim Sum, now is the time without having to go into China Town NYC. Make sure you get the 5spice pork, it's so tender and flavorful. Everything on the steam cart is great. They also have a seperated cart that comes around and you pick spring rolls or Singapore Mei fun noodles or curry, which is cooked fresh for you. The trio of sauces accompanying the dim sum is amazing. The green sauce is our favorite. Don't forget the tea. I like the fresh steeped ginger with fresh lemon. I was really pleasantly surprised by the Pandan Room. Our waitress/hostess was awesome & seemed to have the entire menu's ingredients memorized, and made very helpful suggestions. I had the sampler, which included the curry puff, veggie samosas, pad thai, and deep-fried banana (dessert course), and everything was very good. My bf had the pad thai, and loved it. The food, the atmosphere, and the staff are phenomenal. The decor is amazing. Can the interior/exterior designer come do my house? Haha. I find myself coming back here all the time, as well as Toppo which is another restaurant owned by the same person. A lot of my friends and I have conflicting dietary needs, but there is always more than enough options for all of us to chose from and they are all delicious. I had my birthday party here last year and the owner/chef personally called me to make sure everything was perfect and that they could accommodate me. Not sure what happened tonight. I've ordered from here a few times and feel the food has gotten worse over time. Tonight the pad Thai didn't taste like Pad Thai at all and it was extremely greasy. My husband found it very disappointing. I ordered the fried rice. This was also greasy and had a sweet taste. Other than the sweet taste it lacked flavor even with all the vegetables. (There was more vegetables than rice) the only thing that tasted good was the appetizer of roti and curry. My husband and I sometimes visit Thai Nam Phet in Rockaway. To be honest maybe our expectations have been heightened from our experience there. The food is phenomenal. Makes me sad since the food here was once so good and this is closer to home. read more

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the size of the restaurant...it's pretty small, but that made the place feel more warm and intimate. We didn't have a problem getting seating when we went bc we went at 5 on a Thursday, but I'm sure you'd need reservations on a weekend. The menu is pretty large, but our waitress was super helpful in helping us narrow down what we wanted. Also they're byob which is always a plus :) The service was very fast, but the food was average; however, compared to other food options in hackettstown, I'd say Pandan Room offers relatively better food. The portions were decent sizes, and the pricing of our meals correlated well to their respective prices. I got pad Thai with shrimp. The shrimp was pretty good and juicy, but I wish they put more in it. For appetizers, we got spinach artichoke potstickers, which were pretty good but I would definitely not recommend dipping them in the Thai dips that come with it. Spinach and artichoke definitely doesn't strike me as "Thai" Overall, we had a good experience here. I've been coming here for years- I don't think any visit has ever disappointed me. The owner Jae is very nice if you get the chance to meet him, definitely say hi! The restaurant was so busy one night we had him as our waiter! The food can sometimes take longer to come out, but it's worth the wait. Each dish is creative and incredibly flavored. We are long time patrons. This place used to be a 5 start review every time. I fear it is slipping without owner Jae in the kitchen much any more. The last 2 times we have gone in some clearly less talented lady was cooking. Food quality has slipped. For example the Tom Yong Kong used to be full of fresh veggies and amazing, now some kinda mushy broccoli and a sheen of grease on the broth. Lemon-pepper ribs appetizer used to come over an amazing salad with cut up strawberries pineapple and mango. Ribs were in an yummy tasty sauce. Now it is a few steamed ribs with a little of some bland sauce and plain store bought mesclun on a plate. No more cut up fruits. Come back from TOPO Jae, Pandan needs your owner's touch! read more

Pretty disappointed. Food was quite bland for Thai food. We went for lunch and my friend ordered the coconut shrimp appetizer, it was either in the fryer too long or the oil needs to be changed or both. They were very dark and barely any filling. $9 for 5 small rolls the size of my thumb. The dipping sauce was good, just wished there was better tasting food to dip into it. I ordered the Lemongrass chicken with veggies changed it out for tofu, the menu described a brown sauce which I thought was odd for lemongrass dish? But ok. No. I was right. It was odd and didn't taste any sign of lemongrass. Dish was just very bland. I ate a few bites, but that was all. Just boring reminded me of hospital food lol. My friend also got a satay shrimp salad, she also thought it was bland. She also got a Thai iced tea (she's a Thai iced tea hound) and said it was "meh" the cream seemed to be separated as chunks were floating around in the drink. Won't return. read more

This is the one and the only legitimate and authentic Indonesian restaurant in all of the state of New Jersey in the Hackettstown area. Now, I am talking about their Indoensian menu/selection and not their Thai menu. Parking is a bit minimal in their rear but there is available side street parking with parking meters. In terms of quality, yes, definitely decent in overall taste, style, and flavor regarding Indonesian cuisine. Quick service. Responsive and attentive. Relatively affordable and decent prices as well as portion-size. I am of Indonesian heritage, and I would say the taste is pretty close to authentic as Indonesian cuisine should be back at my 2nd home of Indonesia. There are a handful of dishes that seem Americanized (less salty, sweeter or less spicy). Their Bang Bang Chicken is spot-on tasty and filled with flavor as well as their Corn Fritters or otherwise known as Corn Croquette. I highly recommend Bakmi Goreng (Fried/Sauteed Indonesian Egg Noodles) as well as Kweitiau Goreng (Fried/Sauteed Indonesian flat noodles with your choice of meat, onions, bean sprouts, egg). The Roti Canai is not authentic, for one thing. Indonesian Roti Canai is actually a super thin and flat semi-pan fried cake with highly crispy edges as well as soft and gooey center. Their spring rolls are super crispy on the outside and soft and filled with ingredients inside. The taste is great overall, and being that I am an Indonesian heritage individual. I know Indonesian cuisine like it is second-nature. (The rest of these restaurants that claim they are Indonesian are really all Malaysian or Singaporean). Pandan is legitimate Indonesian, nonetheless. Unless... times have changed.....? Their entrees are ample with ingredients and taste, decent quality, relatively affordable prices, and portions are above average. Satay skewers of any meat type, you cannot go wrong with - dipping sauce is a creamy peanut sauce. They will ask you if you have any allergies beforehand. I guess we didnt take the "fusion" part of this place too seriously and we should have. We got the the thaieiah or however it's spelled , pad thai and a green curry dish. I was a little grossed out by the fact that all of these dishes were sweet. The green currys flavor seemed to be muffed by this sweetness. Ive never had a green curry let alone a pad thai with such sweet notes to it. That being said, ive had curries from countless places, its my go to. This place didnt really deliver too well. The curry lacked a savory note that ive found in almost all green curries that ive tried. My father said the pad thai was sweet, too sweet as well. My aunt however loved her thai-aya and i will admit even through the sweetness it was a good dish. Maybe we picked the wrong meals? The food looked great, smelled great, but didnt have the taste to back it up. Perhaps another try will see this place in better light. A decent Thai joint doing an impressive amount of business among the local yuppies and business types. The owner is a genius for being able fleece the wealthy for such cheap ingredients dropped off by the Sysco truck that also makes the rounds to hospitals, chain restaurants and school cafeterias with its flash-frozen miracle food. Anyway, the ambiance is welcoming and charming. However, trying to order a vegetarian lunch special was a headache. The chef or whomever was incredibly resistant and angry about having to make an order of vegetarian pad thai, for some reason. In the end, he wouldn't accommodate so my fiancee had to order the 'Noodley,' children's meal (simply butter and coconut milk on noodles...). Aside from that, food is average, nothing particularly special. The dessert was incredibly disappointing. A fried stick of Jiffy peanut butter? BYOB, more like bring your own milk. All in all, a great place for the Lexus-pack to pretend they're hitting up the hottest restaurant in Manhattan after catching Jersey Boys on Broadway. read more

We decided to try this place for two reasons. First, most of the reviews were good, second we hoped that it was authentic. We made a reservation for 7PM. We arrived and were seated immediately (Very Good). The place was crowded and lively which is usually a good sign on a Friday night. Full disclosure we have eaten at many Asian restaurants especially Thai and know the food well. We ordered the Corn Fritters for an appetizer and we were disappointed. They were greasy and it seemed as if they were not fried in oil that was hot enough. Very soggy. I ordered the Thai Basil Fried Rice and my wife ordered the Pad Thai. She liked her Pad Thai and ate it all. Unfortunately for me my Rice was not well prepared. The rice was saturated in the sauce used for the dish and it overwhelmed everything. Way too much of this sauce on the dish. I couldn't distinguish any of the ingredients in the dish. Way too much sauce made the rice look like a sticky rice dish not fried rice. Overall the food was mediocre at best and not very authentic. The service unfortunately was not any better. Midway through the meal we ran out of water and asked for refills. It took nearly 10 minutes for the server to return with water. Additionally i tried several times to ask for side soy sauce to liven the flavor of my dish. I ended up asking another server. When the check came the service was no better. I asked for the bill and waited over 10 minutes for her to come back and collect it. Finally i was fed up and got up and gave it to the nice young man who gave me the soy sauce. Overall mediocre food and bad service combined for a disappointing evening. Quite honestly i would not return knowing there are much better Asian restaurants in Chester for example. A little further drive for us but head and shoulders above this place. Plus excellent service. Perhaps this place passes for good, authentic, asian food to those that don't know better but this is not the case in my opinion. read more

We (Asian couples) stopped this Saturday noon for a lunch. We told the owner that we do not like too many fry food and we would like to share some authentic Thai/Indonesia foods. He suggested Lemongrass Pepper Ribs, Pagar Sate chicken, and Lemongrass Fish (a modification from Lemongrass Chicken). The taste were all great and unique. Even the duck sauce for the free shrimp chip were home made. The use of the herbs and spice are unbelievably nice. After the meal, the owner Jay kindly showed his herb garden. His knowledge on the east and western herb is enormous. Later he even gave us a small printout of sightseeing in the area. The Herbal Farm: Well Sweep Herb Farm was another huge surprise. The trip to Hacketstown was a very very nice. It was forty minutes away from us. We will come back with our friends ( some are gourmet eaters). read more

The Pandan Room has been highly recommended in our area for Thai/Indonesian food so perhaps either my hopes were too high or I ordered the wrong dishes. One thing I will say is that the staff working there were extremely friendly and helpful when it came to ordering the meal, since some of my family was not familiar with the cuisine. They genuinely loved the food they served there and had great energy. Unfortunately, I ordered a plate with peanut sauce, and it was as if they legitimately poured heated up Jiff's peanut butter and drenched it over my meal... I have never had an experience like that. Pros: -The Green Tea Soufflé is to die for! The texture and the combination of the green tea with the strawberry and whipped cream is just divine. We ordered two: one when we dined-in and the other to go because we loved it that much! -The spring roll medley was also good and my husband and baby liked the corn Perkedel Corn Fritters. -Our server Zac was a cute-i'll-put-you-in-my-pocket and attentive boy. -The noodles and rice dishes that we ordered had generous amounts of meat and vegetables on them unlike other restaurants. Cons: -Service was indeed unacceptable. There was no greeter and when someone saw us standing by the door, the lady asked if we were being assisted. Obviously, we were not, that's why we weren't seated yet. The female servers that were there didn't really pay attention to us after we've been sitting for several minutes--that's probably why they called Zac to assist us (lucky for us though). -The noodles and rice dishes that we ordered were average (taste)--nothing unique or that stands out. We would love to try their dim sum but this town is not in our direct route when we travel. IF we do, I'll give a separate review just for the dim sum. P.S. Having a ceiling fan on your low ceiling dining area is a hazard to taller people. We are not tall, but I have to mention it because it is a safety issue on your current/future patrons. read more

My only complaint is that it took me so long to try this place. If you are new to Thai/Indonesian cuisine, I highly recommend starting with the Dim Sum brunch. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and show you the food before you order it. No surprises! They literally have a food parade at your table and answer all your questions. My other first world problem complaint - everything looks so good it's hard to make up your mind. Luckily, the prices are extremely reasonable so feel free to go overboard. I've been twice in the past 2 weeks. The second time I brought my kids. My younger daughter is a very picky 3 year old, and she had no problem finding options. She ate the corn fritters, the sticky rice, the chicken sate and then devoured some green tea ice cream and the mango sticky rice dessert. And did I mention how awesome the staff was? My older daughter ordered the passion fruit cheesecake, which would've been good if any of us liked passionfruit. So after she took a bite, she decided she didn't like it and it just sat there. The staff noticed it barely touched and without us even asking, swapped it out for the java lava dessert which was rich and chocolately and made my daughter so happy. I had been here twice before and the food and service were good. Last week I called on the phone to order vegan wings, two soups and a Pad Prik King Gai, which is listed on the menu as spicy. At most places, you can ask for spicy dishes to be made non-spicy, so I asked on the phone if that was possible. The guy on the phone clearly did not understand my question but said yes anyways, because when the food arrived it was very spicy. My boyfriend can't take spice so I ended up eating it the next day. I had to throw away the wings because they were gross -and I never throw food away. They didn't feel or taste like wings whatsoever, which sometimes happens with vegan options, but they were just really bad. Additionally, only one soup had been added to my order. I called back just to let them know about the soup and the Pad Prik King, I didn't even say anything about the wings. The person who picked up -not the one who took my order- just kept interrupting me, talking to other people while I was on the phone with him and being defensive when I was being polite and kept saying 'I just wanted you to know'. He kept trying to fight me by saying that the menu listed the dish as spicy even though I told him several times I had asked the other person if it could be made not spicy and had been given a positive answer. He ended up offering to make me another soup if I went back to pick it up. I didn't want another soup, I just wanted him to take my feedback, like a professional would, which he never did. Everybody raves about this place and for good reason. This Asian fusion restaurant is perhaps the biggest surprise of the influx of international hotspots to my tiny hometown, where we had only one Chinese restaurant (Kam Fu anyone?) down the block for years when I was growing up. When the Japanese restaurant Fujiyama opened in the 2000s and I watched the subtitled "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" at the local theater, I happily realized that my conservative hometown was in fact embracing diversity. We first came to Pandan a few years ago and loved it but hadn't been back until New Year's Eve 2013. I'm pleased to report that this restaurant is as good as ever and should definitely top your list of places to try in Hackettstown. Service was prompt and friendly and we were kindly comped a delicious homemade butterscotch pudding for dessert. Wanting to eat light ahead of New Year's festivities later in the day, my husband ordered nasi goreng (basic Indonesian fried rice) and took half of it home. For myself when I saw the lamb shank braised in coconut milk and tamarind on the menu I couldn't resist, despite our plans later in the evening. My friends know that I love a braised meat dish, especially in the winter: osso buco, boeuf bourguignon, pork loin alla latte, coq au vin, you name it. This lamb shank perfectly embodied the Asian fusion concept of a familiar food prepared in an Asian style and was flavorful and delicious, though slightly under seasoned. The sauteed veggies and rice were a perfect accompaniment for a light lunch and since the waitress kindly brought me a to go box with my dish, I was actually able to put some of it aside to enjoy the next day. For those who really love this type of food, the restaurant is offering cooking classes this winter that I would definitely sign up for if I were living locally. read more
