Came to this restaurant as it had many great reviews. Ordered the Satay Padang, Nasi Padang Bungkus and Cendol. Unfortunately, I found the taste a bit plain..May be I dont have much Indonesian food and most people like them thos way.

definitely a very special restaurant. its rare to find an indonesian restaurant and their menu is also so big it feels overwhelming. ive been to singapore and had indonesian food there which didnt leave a great impression but this place feels very authentic and has changed my mind. got the sate ayam and nasi padang bungkus which is a little funky but delicious. if youre looking for a new cuisine to try thats not pretentious i cant recommend this place enough.

Another great Indonesian restaurant I got to try before heading back to Portland today. Really good food and it taste so authentic and definitely like the places you've eaten in Indonesia so that's a great place for us here. The service was great and the food again tasted great and I recommend getting the Tempe with some sambal. Right across the street is a nice little Indonesian import market as well if you want to head there and get some stuff to take back home to Indonesia back home to wherever you came from.

So I have had very limited experience with Indonesian food so when a friend asked if I wanted to join, I said sure. I went to the previous restaurant in the same spot called Sky Cafe and my experience was a bit mixed, I am not sure if Sumatera is a brand new owner or just a name change. But overall, I enjoyed my meal at Sumatera. The food: Salad Daun Teh Hijau- Green tea leaves mixed with cabbage, tomatoes, assorted beans and green chilies. This is their tea leaf salad which was a nice starter, the veg was nice and tender and I really enjoyed the crunch from the assorted crunchy beans. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=qa0ZTpqbYeit713-_KdFRw Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng- Coconut rice with fried chicken, spicy egg, anchovies and assorted pickles. This was like a set platter with fried chicken which was really nice. I thought the coconut rice and these fried anchovies with nuts were awesome, the fried chicken was OK, I wish there was a bit more flavor in the fried chicken. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=x_PCQ4xZjEjMMq-ASuF8xQ Mie Goreng Belacan- Stir fry shrimp paste noodles. This was a stir fried noodle dish with shrimp paste which was a dish we were excited to try since we all enjoy shrimp paste and this dish was a winner. The flavors were nice, the noodle had a nice chew and the overall flavored worked, it was a bit saucy for me but this dish is worth getting. Nasi Padang Bungkus- White rice with beef, curry jackfruit, egg, tofu, kale, cucumber, spicy chips, potato fritter and sambal ijo. This another set platter but this one was with beef rendang. The presentation was great, it comes wrapped in a banana leaf and you open it at the table. This dish had so much going on from the curried jackfruit to the fried hard boiled egg to the potato fritter to the spicy sambal ijo, a fun dish to eat but I thought this dish was just ok. I wish there was more beef rendang in it to be honest. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=bdHLy-Gi3_6mLBcVenv3MA

    V2. Nasi Vegetarian Ikan Balado
    Vishnu G.

Tasty and plenty of vegetarian options. I had vegetarian ikan balado, which came with a rich and flavorful curry, crispy fried mock fish, chips, a battered and fried boiled egg, and rice. The sambal on top added some nice spice. Prices were also quite reasonable at $16.50 before tax and tip, but there's a 4% credit card charge.

An authentic and flavorful experience! It was well-regarded by the Indonesians in my group. We split the Batagor and the Pempek appetizers, both delicious (the peanut and kuah cuko sauces were great)! For mains, we all got different variations of the Nasi Padang Bungkus and one Nasi Padang Set. All the different items were amazing and we left with lots of leftovers. Ended the meal with a sweet and fruity Es Teler. Easily worth the trek out here!

We came for lunch on Christmas Day. It's a tiny hole in the wall with just a few tables in a cramped space. It was 4 of us and not long after we were there, a group of 8 ppl came. We moved our table to accommodate them. We ordered a few things to share. Everything was good. Personally, wouldn't recommend for groups if you wanna be comfortable. The service wasn't very friendly or efficient. Not sure if it was because they were working on a holiday. This is def a place for good food and no frills.

I came across this place thanks to recommendation from AI. It had that classic hole-in-the-wall atmosphere the moment we walked inside, I'm glad or I wouldn't have thought of coming here. My friend and I couldn't decide on what to order so each ordered a rice and noodle dish. Starting off, we went with the beef tongue which was called sate padang (5 pieces) on skewers. It came in thick curry sauce and compressed rice cakes. A popular choice with a kick, it came highly recommended. For the entrees we had the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng was a coconut rice with fried chicken. I didn't couldn't taste the coconut on the rice and skipped the fried chicken and my friend ate it. She said it tasted good even though the chicken looked extra crispy. The Mie Komplit which is the combination egg noodles (a popular dish) which comes with ground chicken, vegetables, braised egg, fried wontons, meatball, fish ball, and chicken broth pn the side was good. And finally, dessert, we had Es Teler which had mixed fruits with condensed milk and syrup. Super sweet, but good. Overall, this little spot is not to be missed.

R25. Nasi Padang Set and oxtail soup

Such a homey taste and vibe. Very kind workers. Came near closing time but they did not rush us out. In fact, I think I saw another family stay later than me. Loved trying several dishes in the Nasi Padang Set. The green spicy sauce pairs so well with everything, but my favorite dish is the shrimp-tomato dish. Perfect blend of tangy and savory while maintaining a lovely crunch. The Shrimp Paste noodles are a little more salty than my liking but I loved the noodle texture itself. The Oxtail Soup broth is brilliant. Clean, savory, comforting. I do wish the meat is more tender though. Big shoutout to the sauce condiments place on every table. Let's you really plus up your meal how you prefer. I left knowing I want to come back and try more, especially since I'm not exposed to many other Indonesian food in the city.

Came here on a Friday night ~6pm and it was still relatively empty. We definitely beat the dinner rush. We ordered an assortment of dishes to try, including the chives pancake, fried tofu, curry noodles and more. The food came out quickly and it was delicious. The curry noodles and rice dishes were our favorite. It's packed with flavor! The inside was nice and cozy, not too much seating, perfect for 3-4 small groups. Would definitely be exploring more Indonesian food from now on.

A trusted friend brought me here, knowing that I love Indonesian food. I had the Nasi Vegetarian Ikan Balado. It was fantastic. The restaurant was cozy and charming and the service was very friendly. I'll be back.

Everything taste good except the portion is on the small side. The server was attentive and the food came pretty quickly . The restaurant can only hold about 4 tables so expect to wait on the line during dinner hours

Just went here for the second time and it was just as fantastic as the first. Of the numerous Indonesian restaurants I've tried in New York, this is probably my favorite. The dishes are authentic and they offer an impressive variety. If you haven't had Indonesian food before, you can't go wrong with nasi campur, a dish consisting of rice and several accompaniments. My personal favorite is nasi campur rendang, the highlight of which is a tender beef packed with spices and stewed to perfection. Rendang is hard to get right but they do a really solid job with it. Another staple is nasi goreng, or Indonesian fried rice. They have a variety of toppings to choose from but I got the nasi goreng ikan asin, which is salted fish. I absolutely loved it (because I love salted fish) but note it does have a strong flavor. Finally, one more classic is sate atam. You can add lontong (rice cake) if you want your meat-carb combo, which we did. The peanut sauce is top-notch and don't forget the sambal (chili sauce), which should be available at your table. I'll definitely be back whenever I'm remotely in the area!

Pros: seated quickly, ambiance was lovely, appetizers came out quickly, the Lasuni Gobi was delicious. CONS: My husband and I waited 40+ minutes for our main dishes (dal + rice and the Paneer Tikka dish) to arrive....... And we watched the people who were seated AFTER us receive their MEAT dishes before we got our ours and we most definitely ordered first. We asked our server MORE THAN ONCE what was taking so long and we got the same answer each time "I've told the kitchen to hurry, it'll be out soon" To make matters worse, the person who brought us our dishes (maybe the chef? Maybe the manager?) brought them without the naan that we ordered. When I asked, "where's our naan?" He had the audacity to rudely say "it'll be out in a few minutes", as if we hadn't already been waiting 40+ minutes for vegetarian food that I could've whipped up myself in 20 minutes. His attitude towards us was so unacceptable considering the circumstances. We have absolutely no idea what happened or why it took so long for our simple dishes to arrive. It's especially perplexing considering that the people who came in AFTER us got their meat dishes first. The server apologized and decided to bring us some kulfi (ice cream) to try to make up for it, but we try to avoid eating sugar so that was useless. I felt bad for the server because it wasn't his fault that our food took a ridiculous amount of time to make it to our table, and it's not cool that a manager never stepped in to try to reconcile. As someone who waited tables for 8+ years, I was shocked at the lack of support this server received from his management team. The dal and paneer tikka dishes were average tasting at best (and overpriced), making another trip here completely unfathomable, most especially considering how we were treated. Note to management: do better. Support your staff and step in to reconcile with unhappy guests if this happens again.
