Singapore rice noodles
Michael H.

I ordered Singapore rice noodleswith chicken and it was supposed to have vegetable. I got three strips of peppers and one small piece of what appears to be.bok choy and some beans spouts. One thing a self proclaimed vegetarian, friendly restaurant should not be skimping on the veggies. Dish was tasteless, greasy and had very little seasoning.

Mee goreng with chicken

Cute little spot, came for lunch. Was greeted by the waiter who was pretty friendly throughout the whole meal. Started with the roti paratha, which is a must when we come to Malaysian restaurants. There were two slices of roti and taste-wise they were pretty standard. The dipping sauce was up to par-nothing terribly unique about it. The mee goreng was super average. The noodles were nice but there wasn't as much flavor as I was hoping. Would definitely recommend asking for soy sauce and chili oil to mix in. Pork rib noodle soup was nice. There was a good amount of meat and it was nicely tender-easy to bite off the bone. The broth itself was pretty flavorful (benefited also from the chili oil). Overall worth the try if you like Malaysian food.

I like the dumplings. Nice people and fast service. The dumplings sauce is a little salty but good.

I've only eaten here once but would definitely return. I had the cow feet curry. Feet were very…read moretender. Curry was mild in terms of spiciness but flavorful with strong coconut note. Served with rice. If eating alone, maybe not the best dish due to lack of veggies. Very reasonable prices. Friendly service. A lot of Indonesian customers. Not much ambience, but who cares.

Seulanga Cafe is a homey neighborhood spot for some of the best Indonesian food. When you walk in,…read morethere's a few tables and shelves with goods for sale. It is buffet style, so all of the dishes are laid out on a food line and you order at the counter. I highly recommend the Nasi Padang ($14) as it was SO much food and everything was very delicious. The kale was cooked in coconut milk which was aromatic, creamy, and slightly spicy, but still retains that slightly bitter edge. The egg is coated in sambal which is definitely spicy but pairs so well with the rice. The beef was tender and fall apart and the sauce was thick and so flavorful. The chicken was also fall apart soft. The highlight of the dish was getting to eat each component with the coconut rice. The coconut rice is some of the best I've ever had!! It's hard to explain what it tastes like but it's the perfect blend of coconut, salty, sweet, and very savory. I would say it's much more traditional tasting compared to Sky Cafe (another popular Indonesian spot). They take cash/venmo/zelle (I think)! It is incredibly worth it for the price. Definitely want to support a smaller, local business!

Carter Afro futurism in Costume Design exhibition (Sinners, Wakanda Forever, etc.). And what do you need on a field trip? Lunch! We looked at the options around us, considered dietary restrictions, and decided Penang was the place for us. And they did not disappoint! Service was great... We were immediately seated. The weather was a bit chilly, and when we requested a new space away from the door, we were accommodated without incident. When I tell you the roti with curry changed my life?? I could eat that everyday and not get tired of it?! It's sooo perfect! Sheesh! We ordered a lot of different dishes, so we kind of shared around the table, leaving nothing to be desired. The green curry seafood in clay pot was delicious! I mean, every variation of curry I tasted was somehow the best curry. Haha The mango fish was sooo good! The fried vegetable dumplings were amazing. I will surely be back. I don't even care if I have to get it delivered, I will be enjoying this food again!

I've been here multiple times since moving to Philly, and Penang has always been my go-to spot for…read moreMalaysian food... but honestly, that might be changing. The food quality has noticeably gone downhill over the past few months. To start, my party of four asked for a pot of hot tea. The server told us it would be $5, which is fine--especially since it was freezing outside and the restaurant itself was cold (the heat didn't seem to be on). But near the middle of the meal, I asked for a refill (literally just more hot water), and the server came back with the owner/manager and said it would be another $5. That's ridiculous. The tea is already made--charging another $5 for hot water is wild. The service didn't help either. The server was pretty stoic, and the whole interaction felt awkward, especially while I was trying to order off a QR code menu that had zero descriptions of the dishes. That lack of explanation definitely caused issues. For example, we ordered the Singapore rice noodles expecting something curry-based, but it tasted like a sweet-and-sour ketchup sauce instead. Not good--and totally avoidable if the menu actually explained what the dish was. As for the food, the roti canai was disappointing. The curry was watered down and lacked flavor compared to previous visits, though I'll give credit where it's due--the roti itself was nicely toasted. I don't know what changed, but something clearly did, and it feels like a leadership issue. Overall, this visit was really underwhelming, and I won't be coming back anytime soon unless things seriously turn around here.

Overall Ratings Atmosphere - 5/5 Service - 5/5 Food - 5/5 Parking - Street Parking Atmosphere - The restaurant is on the smaller side with limited seating, but it feels modern and thoughtfully designed. I especially enjoyed the artwork throughout the space. Service - We had the chance to chat with one of the owners and learned they have only been open for a couple of years. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming, and I truly hope they continue to see the success they deserve. What We Ordered - -Chicken satay (Very good, with a peanut sauce that isn't overly heavy or overpowering like at some places) -Beef rendang (An incredible dish. We were both impressed by how rich and flavorful it was) Final Thoughts - I would definitely recommend visiting this restaurant if you are ever in the area.

Some standout menu items: the kwetiau goreng tastes just like home, especially with the lapchong--yuuummmm so good! The kwetiau siram was equally delicious. The capcay, while not exactly like what you'd get in Indonesia, is still the best I've had in the U.S. On my most recent visit, I had the nasi ayam goreng, which also one of my favorites. The sayur asam is perfectly balanced, and the ayam goreng kuning is also delicious. What I really appreciate about Djakarta Cafe is the consistency--the flavors have been great for years and that's what keeps me coming back. And the service is always wonderful too. Shoutout to Lena, who always greets us so warmly!
