It smelled a bit musky inside too but not intolerable. I ordered the N11 and my friend ordered the N1. We shared an order of chicken satay. The chicken satay was underwhelming especially given how they market it as their top item. The meat was tender but not as tender and juicy as I was hoping. The satay sauce was sweet and peanut forward (not like peanut butter) which was nice but I was hoping for more umami. I ended up enjoying the cucumbers at the bottom of this dish more than the actual meat and sauce. I got N11 because I like eating laksa, but I also found the dish disappointing. It's alright but again not worth the hype it gets from others. It wasn't spicy at all, like maybe 1.5/10. The broth was mostly creamy salty flavor rather than full of spices. I know it doesn't have seafood explicitly in it, but the fish cakes and fish balls would do well with meatier broth. The fish ball and fish cakes weren't bouncy and tasted quite fishy. The tofu pieces weren't fresh but not spoiled to a point I needed to call it out. Maybe the only thing I liked was the texture of the noodles. My friend's N1 tasted more like a soy sauce based sauce. I didn't like that sauce nor the texture of her noodles, so I was glad to stick with mine. She preferred her's more too. She said the more she ate, the milddddd heat in her sauce accumulated and made it too spicy for her to finish the last bite. I didn't taste any heat when I tried a bite, but maybe it was too small. This restaurant also charges a surcharge for credit cards, so we paid by cash.

It almost felt like something I could make at home. The soup similarly did not have a particularly rich or flavorful broth, and left me a little dissapointed. Another thing that really influences my review is how cold it was inside. It got even colder when people opened and closed the door. It was so cold that our food didn't seem hot. The thick slice of bread was also quite stale. Despite only consuming the Kaya toast about 1-2 hours after picking it up, the bread was not fresh at all. Appearance wise, it looks like a generous portion of Kaya jam but when you open up the sandwich, there's actually not that much Kaya. Most of the Kaya looked like they were pushed to the edge creating an appearance of a fuller sandwich. The butter was also not the usual thick slab of butter I was used to seeing. I do have to say that I do think their Kaya jam was quite delicious. It was not overly sweet and has a good coconut pandan flavor. I also tried some of their other sweets. The pulut tai tai which is a steamed sticky rice and comes with a side of kaya jam. It's just ok, the kaya jam is carrying most of the flavor. I was really excited for the kuih talam but it was quite surprising for me. I like the sweeter pandan base but the coconut milk layer was way too salty. I know that's how the dish is supposed to be served but it was quite confusing for my taste buds. I think the pandan base by itself is good but it's not sweet enough to balance out the saltiness of the coconut milk layer. The ambiance inside is quite casual. You order at the counter first and then pick up your food. You also clean up after yourself. I'm a big fan of these casual environments but the food was a big let down. Overall: the sweets and signature Kaya toast left me disappointed but their homemade Kaya jam itself is quite delicious.

Food is a gateway to experiencing and understanding other cultures and this location was front and center in midtown, blocks from Times Square. In a sea of other cuisines, this part of Southeast Asia didn't/doesn't have much representation in general in Manhattan, and even less so now. Scouring articles and comments online I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they're able to find a different space in the near future! Was it the best food court? I'll admit this was easily debatable for many reasons. But each stall had their own standouts. Tradsiyon was a later addition though had really solid braised meat and veggie bowls; Hainan Jones stepped into a midtown scene several years ago with no other similar Hainanese chicken spots in midtown (a few others thankfully are around today); Kopifellas brought uniquely Singaporean/Malasian tea and coffee options; I still remember the first bite of Prawnaholic's signature shrimp and rib noodles tasting that savory goodness for the first time; and most of all I will dearly miss this location of Lady Wong, where I rarely walked away empty handed. People seemed relaxed and unguarded, shedding the polished professional persona they'd worn all day. It felt like watching the city exhale for a little while. And another thing I appreciated was their attempt to represent different nationalities under one roof. The more common items performed the worse and that's probably when you come to a space dedicated to hawker style cuisine, you expect to try some of their more novel stuff like Coffee Pork Fried Rice (from a stall that specialized in fried rice) or Noodles in Bechamel. I also frequently enjoyed their only drinks provider for the best Yuen Yang I've ever had. The method for making them seems theatrical at first but when you've had one that wasn't properly aerated, you truly taste the chalky bitter tannins. It was a good thing there was an experience worker there (possibly the owner). Who you got to make your drink was hit or miss because at varying times, my gf would be lucky enough to run into the one guy who could do it with oatmilk (she's lactose intolerant).
