I opted to get the nasi lemak since it seemed to be their most popular food. Delicious! I'm a big fan of Kaya toast but honestly quite disappointed with the Kaya toast here. The Kaya toast comes with a thick slice of toasted bread except I don't think they make the Kaya toast to order. When I picked it up, it was already room temperature. It looks like it was prepared ahead of time instead of the other Kaya toasts I've had which were prepared fresh with the bread still warm. The thick slice of bread was also quite stale. Despite only consuming the Kaya toast about 1-2 hours after picking it up, the bread was not fresh at all. Appearance wise, it looks like a generous portion of Kaya jam but when you open up the sandwich, there's actually not that much Kaya. Most of the Kaya looked like they were pushed to the edge creating an appearance of a fuller sandwich. The butter was also not the usual thick slab of butter I was used to seeing. I do have to say that I do think their Kaya jam was quite delicious. It was not overly sweet and has a good coconut pandan flavor. I also tried some of their other sweets. The pulut tai tai which is a steamed sticky rice and comes with a side of kaya jam. It's just ok, the kaya jam is carrying most of the flavor. I was really excited for the kuih talam but it was quite surprising for me. I like the sweeter pandan base but the coconut milk layer was way too salty. I know that's how the dish is supposed to be served but it was quite confusing for my taste buds. I think the pandan base by itself is good but it's not sweet enough to balance out the saltiness of the coconut milk layer. The ambiance inside is quite casual. You order at the counter first and then pick up your food. You also clean up after yourself. I'm a big fan of these casual environments but the food was a big let down. After 10 years later, I got to try Kopitiam again. I had to wait another 10 minutes after the estimated time. I ordered the Char Kway Teow, nasi lemak, kaya toast and Kuih Talam. Char kway teow was freshly made but a little soggy. However it was tasty. The nasi lemak was great. I really like the stir fried anchovies. The rice had a hard bite to it. Kaya toast was good. It tasted like a struggle meal with the fried anchovies and peanuts, and the cucumber looked like it had been sitting a while. As a Singaporean living in the states, a good kopitiam is hard to find so when I saw this closeby the hotel we were staying at, I knew I had to visit! The food did not disappoint! We got a Nasi Lemak and a few Kaya Toasts, along with a Kopi Tarik. Everything was really good! The Kaya toast was bigger than what you'd get in Asia, with more Kaya in it too, but just as delicious with a comforting flavor. I primarily came here to try their Kaya Toast and Muah Chee since we don't have any Malaysian restaurants in Philly offering those. We got the Nasi Lemak, Kaya Toast and Penang Style Muah Chee. The Nasi Lemak was good - the dried anchovies were salty, and the rice was bland so when mixed properly, the flavors were perfectly balanced. The Kaya Toast was a little disappointing - unfortunately the Kaya Jam had a very strong smell of a specific type of coconut hair oil available in India, and I just couldn't get past it. I have made Kaya Jam at home following various YouTube videos and it turned out so good and so much better than here that I will stick to my homemade Kaya jam for any future cravings. Really good Malaysian brunch ! We got the curry chicken, kaya toast, the pandan chicken, and the mee goreng for three people. I also ordered an iced salted bek-kopi. This was a solid amount of food for the price. My favorite protein was definitely the pandan chicken. It was a little bit like a chicken meatball that had a slightly sweet flavor. The chili sauce it came with made it a really nicely balanced sweet and spicy flavor. The Mee Goreng was another favorite because of the spice and tofu. The curry chicken was good and cooked well. The Kaya Toast was a nice sweet element to the meal. There is so much pandan flavored cream in there and it wasn't too sweet. The salted bek-kopi coffee was also a steal. For $7 it was one of the bigger coffees I've had in NYC. It was a white coffee so it wasn't meant to be a super strong espresso flavor. I'm glad I finally got to try Kopitiam! It has a cool, casual, down-to-earth vibe which pairs really well with its comforting Malaysian dishes! Here's what I got: Nasi Lemak ($12): This is the national dish of Malaysia and a part of Kopitiam's all-day breakfast menu (side note: way more places need to be doing all-day breakfast, like, what a gap in the market), so I was excited to try it! I enjoyed the flavors, but the textures were a bit off for me, specifically the fried anchovies. They were kind of in between crunchy and chewy, such that they didn't meld well with the rest of the items. I think the value is great, and it's a well-rounded dish, but I would love for the anchovies to either be fully crunchy (like the fried peanuts) or chewy/meaty. Curry Puff ($4.50): I've actually been waiting for years to try this curry puff. I read a review raving about them when I came to New York a couple of years ago, but they were sold out by the time I came! So this time was redemption. The puff was solid! I enjoyed the flaky texture and flavorful filling. I don't think it can live up to the hype of thinking about it for 2+ years, but I'd recommend it. Honeycomb Cake ($7): I've also been wanting to try a cake like this for years. I've seen so many on social media, and the texture looks absolutely divine. It was great! The texture was bouncy and moist, and the really long crumb was simply fun. It was not too sweet, of course. There wasn't a distinct flavor per sé, but I'd agree with what their menu says: "toffee and caramel notes". It definitely had those. All in all, I think Kopitiam was solid. The next time I visit, it would be worthwhile to have a meat dish and certainly more of the snacks and sweets. I ordered a Mee Goreng and a Kiuh Talam- many of their dishes contain pork lard and while I am flexitarian I do not eat pork. I came here TWICE IN TWO DAYS which is a tall order for someone who prioritizes the novelty of each meal on vacation. It was that good! I ordered: - calamansi rose soda: this came in one of those adult capri sun packs and was refreshing and not too sweet - salted bek kopi: this was "white coffee" which apparently is a lighter roast of the bean which had never heard of before and gives a nutty flavor. This combined with the condensed milk meant this tasted like what western-style hazelnut creamer wished she was - tofu salad: crispy and spongy slabs of tofu topped with a tower of crunchy jicama and cucumber and dabs of sambal sauce (which has a back of the throat kick beware!). My stomach was unsettled from the rich food I was eating and this was a perfect light and protien lunch to continue my day - nasi lemak: the traditional dish of coconut rice, cucumber, a peanut and anchovy paste, hard boiled egg, and side of the spicy sambal sauce. The Kaya Toast was not too sweet and had the perfect texture and coconut pandan flavor. What an absolute joy to have! Please stop by, this place is simply so wonderful. I am always impressed when I leave a restaurant having tried something new while not feeling like I overpaid for something mediocre and most likely inauthentic. As newbies to authentic Malaysian cuisine, we ordered the "Kopitiam Classics" Set Menu. Our favorite was the Kaya Butter Toast. Although I enjoyed the flavor of the Nasi Lemak, it was mainly rice and a little heavy for breakfast. The eggs just seemed like runny eggs, but were great when added to a bite of rice. But for almost $30, a bowl of mainly rice, eggs, toast, and tea seemed a little pricey. The restaurant was dimly lit and not the most clean. Customers are responsible for cleaning their own tables, so I'm not sure how often the tables get a good wipe down. read more

Overall pretty good Malaysian food. I was exited to try this place as I love Malaysian breakfast, but was quite disappointed with their Nasi Lamak as I've definitely had better in Malaysia.
