This is a solid Japanese restaurant. I did not know until I walked in that I had been in this space before. I'd eaten here when it was a Thai restaurant about three years ago. The place has been completely redone since then with a brand new interior and still looks fairly new, in addition to being very spacious. The food was excellent too. From previous reviews, it appears most people come here for the ramen, which are about $19 a bowl. My friends and I tried the tonkotsu ramen, shoyu ramen, and a butadon (pork rice bowl). Everything was delicious and flavorful. However, four stars is an accurate assessment. I've had better tasting ramen with a more flavorful broth, and a larger portion with more meat at slightly lower prices. The food is good but not the best either. read more

I also ordered the "roast pork buns" -- 2 to a portion, which was really a delicious, sweet, shredded roast pork on a bao bun with a little Napa cabbage and a slice of cucumber. Yum-o !!! Found this place by chance and grateful for it. Been here twice already and can't wait to go back next week. It's got a nice selection of dishes you can choose from. Their spicy pork rice bowl was phenomenal, spicy miso ramen bowl made my taste buds dance. Even nicer selection of sakis and can I recommend the nigori. Service is the best I have felt in a while as there amazing manager viv greeted us with a huge smile, friendly demeanor and positive vibes. She was so sweet she offered us mochi ice cream on the house. Each time I visited I was never rushed and got to enjoy not only the food but the aesthetics of the place. Beef nabe udon and tonkotsu ramen are both on the sweet side but the flavors are authentic. Recommend mixing it with some chili oil which they can provide (not spicy but it'll balance the flavors). Wish the beef was more tender and prices were lower though. Staff are super nice. Yakitoris seem very popular as i the scent decided to come home with me via my sweater. read more

My friend and I decided to check out Shokudo 34 on a Saturday night around 7:30pm due to the glowing reviews on Google and Yelp. We were seated immediately, and the restaurant was about at half capacity. At first, we were seated near the door and someone didn't close it well on the way out, so the draft was strong, but one of the staff members felt it and closed it. The interior is a no frills, casual dining spot. I got the tempura nabe udon ($17.95) and my friend got the vegetable nabe udon ($16.95). While I agree this is pricey for udon, I was shocked of the reasonableness of the price given the location. My friend thought the vegetable udon was good, but needed more flavor, so we asked for chili flakes. I had the opposite problem with mine. If I'm getting udon, I do not want spice. There were a noticeable amount of chili flakes in my udon, and it was a noticeable kick. I think they should advertise that on the menu, but now you know and if you also do not want a kick, make sure to make that clear to them when you order. Flavor-wise, I liked the flavor of the shrimp tempura. The batter was the right thickness and the shrimp tasted really yummy! The broth was standard for udon, noodles were chewy, and they provided a lot of "throw-away" vegetables. I would prefer a smaller amount of higher quality ingredients, but that's personal preference. Service was decent! They made a few check-backs and refilled water. They also asked before clearing away plates and did not make us feel rushed at all. I'm torn between 3 or 4 stars, but overall, the experience was average. If I do end up coming back, I will change my review to 4 stars, since that means I enjoyed it enough to return! read more

Very disappointed with their ramen. I first ordered the tonkotsu ramen because they told me it was their specialty, and the broth was bland and heavy, and the slices of pork had an unpleasant taste (I'm guessing it was boar taint?). They offered to switch out the tonkotsu ramen with the spicy miso ramen, and although the spicy miso broth had more flavor, the pork still had the same weird taste, so I ate only a little of it. I gave a generous tip (at least 25%, from what I can remember) since they swapped out my order free of charge even though I'd already had a few mouthfuls of the tonkotsu ramen, but later when I checked my credit card charges, I noticed they'd still somehow charged me even more than the total amount I'd agreed to pay. In short, don't go here--the ramen is awful, and they might charge you more than the amount you're supposed to pay. read more

If I must specialize in reviewing one type of food, without a doubt that would be ramen! I actually had ramen for lunch and dinner today. My craving for ramen has lasted for a few decades, with that said, the ramen I had at Shokudo 34 was definitely one of the best ever!!! Ingredients were so fresh - from sourcing, picking, prepping, storing to cooking, they must have done everything right! The tonkotsu broth was among the best I've ever had - very silky, flavorful, and well-balanced. They must have put in a lot of hard work in prepping and cleaning the pork bone, which takes a lot of labor, knowledge and experience! Whoever used the knife must have been a traditional Japanese apprentice, the mastery of knife skills was obvious! Also ordered the grilled chicken wings - the flavor was very good, but the heat wasn't strong enough. If they could grill them on a charcoal stone stove, it would've been perfect. Yakitori isn't their specialty anyway. It was wonderful that I could sub the chashu with tofu then order the wings. Don't forget to try their homemade chili sauce, needless to say, I cleaned everything out. The place was very clean, the vibe was good, the server was warm and friendly. Our second try of this place and I think this time is solidify our opinion of this restaurant. First off, the oil they use to deep fried anything needs to be changed. Everything comes out two shades too dark which indicates the oil isn't fresh. Our first time it tasted rancid, this time it's improved but still not quite fresh tasting. The fried chicken albeit the old oil and thick over salted breading has nicely seasoned chicken pieces that remained juicy. The Oknomiyaki is more like a pajeon with not enough punch than the name sake, it's thin and lacking on ingredients, which results in a dense dough that misses the freshness if enough lettuce was in the batter. All of the noodles are overcooked by a minute or so so it's mushy and lack the toothy texture when it got to the table which was very disappointing. The service on the other hand was attentive and friendly. Drinks are priced very reasonable so come for a drink and go eat at K town for better ramen and better izakaya fair. read more

This little gem of a Japanese restaurant is so nice for its simplistic menu and yet large variety of things one would try. Nothing is overdone or over spiced. I really enjoyed the udon noodle with shrimp tempura soup which was made to perfect with sliced scallions and mushrooms and a bit of carrot as well. I also tried to okonomiyaki which was delightful and the agadashi tofu was one of my favorite dishes. What I really enjoyed about these dishes is again, nothing was overdone and it maintained a nice balance of flavors and nothing was overbooked or had too much sauce. This is such an easy meal, if you want something healthy and comforting or for a cold or rainy or if you aren't feeling well. The soup hits the spot!
