The Malaysian pandan pancake was what I was most pleasantly surprised by. The ground peanuts and brown sugar reminded me of an elite version of peanut butter. Although I think one of the more popular items is the mochi pandan waffle, I'd recommend the pancake over it. I made friends with a regular in line and she told me how her go to is the pancake as well. I'm happy I was able to fit this into my trip as they're only open on weekends. Service is relatively quick (for one person working behind the counter and in the kitchen) but the storefront is tiny so there's not much room for more than 2 groups inside so expect to wait outside. This small cafe is a very cute spot to stop by and grab a snack. The owner was extremely sweet and explained to us that all of their Kayas were made in house by her. On top of this, their menu does change weekly as well as seasonally which keeps it fun and interesting. My fiancé and I really enjoyed the Malaysian Thin Pancake with the Durian & Cheese filling and the texture of the Pandan Mochi Waffle was nice and chewy, but the flavor of the Waffle wasn't anything special. Came here with 2 friends during a mini Chinatown food crawl we were doing. I had this spot saved on Google Maps for awhile so I was excited to finally come and try it out. I love desserts, and with all Asians, the ultimate praise is that it's not too sweet. This place definitely hit the spot with the unique combinations and traditional Malaysian desserts. Been coming to Kuih Cafe for a few years now and their Kuih is always tasty. The rotating desserts are also good. However, a recent experience has soured my experience here and I probably will not be returning in the near future. Due to a popular Instagram post, my husband and I found ourselves waiting an hour in the rain on line today. Upon entering the shop, I noticed the owner was already in a bad mood and impatient for me to order. We quickly ordered and waited for our food. I noticed a burnt smell a few minutes later and she brought out our burnt waffle. When I asked if she could remake it, she told me it was supposed to be like that. I mentioned that it's too dark and burnt on one side and asked if she could promise it wouldn't be bitter. She suggested just returning the item so that is what we ultimately ended up doing. I had wanted to visit this bakery for months. I was in the neighborhood and finally got to grab some pandan desserts. The shop itself is tiny. Prepare to take your food to-go, unless you happen to get a spot on one of three stools they have. I got a kuih set for $12, it comes with three different types, two of each piece. The texture and flavors are so unique. I really loved trying this and will come back to try more of the menu. New York has such cool spots. This is definitely one of them. Absolutely the best, most authentic Singaporean/Malaysian food I've had. Come here for the street snacks, stay for the grit. Auntie Veronica's kitchen is like comfort food away from home -- all her baked goods are made day of and she rotates her menu often, but everything is so delicious that you'll be always wanting to try something new. My friend and I got the pancake which is made fresh and hot -- both the original and ube flavors. The original peanut is sooo yummy, reminiscent of Asian sesame flavor and peanut candies from CNY. The Ube jam is a beautiful purple and also made in house. We were so impressed that we ordered two additional ones for our friend's birthday weekend. I also got to try the salted duck yolk butter chicken which is the most genius dish. Like, where else are you going to find this?? (Answer: a hawker center in Singapore!!) I have so much respect for Veronica and her establishment. Please note, because she is a one woman show the food might take some time, but it's well worth the wait depending on how many customers there are (for us, about 10-15 min for food made fresh, with one other customer waiting.) She also wanted me to pass along that sometimes she may come off as curt but it is just because she wants to get your order right. Was super stoked to find out about this place while I was out and about and was craving a snack to satiate my dinner without ruining my dinner appetite. I've been frequenting Kuih Cafe for the past few years, and I'm a big fan of their Malaysian goods. While I'm mostly not a fan of kuih itself, their savory options like the nasi lemak (either with coconut or pandan rice), pulut panggang (a cylinder of sticky rice stuffed with spicy dried shrimp and shredded coconut, then wrapped in a banana leaf and grilled), and kuih cara berlauk (savory little pancake bites with curry-flavored minced beef and eggs) are delightful. I also like a lot of their cakes, which feature different layers of sponge cake, cheesecake, jelly, and/or icing for a great textural contrast. The ice cendol is a delightfully icy treat for a hot summer day. And on my most recent visit, I enjoyed their earl grey mini burnt cheesecake, a fluffy and creamy snack with a light but recognizable tea flavor. When winter rolls around, they also make a nice assortment of hot and comforting dessert soups like bubur pulut hitam (coconut milk, black sticky rice, and palm sugar) and bubur cha cha (coconut milk with diced taro and sweet potatoes). I love Kuih Cafe! Although my first visit was only earlier this summer, I've been here 3 times already. My favorite item is the Ice Chendol, super refreshing - perfect for the warm weather! I've also had the Salted duck egg butter chicken rice, which was delicious, and one of the Kuih sets, which I really liked - very unique textures and flavors and not too sweet. This hole in the wall spot is such a hidden gem. The store front probably only can fit two or three people inside, and their speciality are these Malaysian sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf desserts called Kuih. Sticky, sweet, gooey, and with a thick coconut flavor served at the right temperature of slightly lukewarm, these instantly bring me back to my trips in southeast Asia. Also try the coconut ube cake.
