The Malaysian pandan pancake was what I was most pleasantly surprised by. The ground peanuts and brown sugar reminded me of an elite version of peanut butter. Although I think one of the more popular items is the mochi pandan waffle, I'd recommend the pancake over it. I made friends with a regular in line and she told me how her go to is the pancake as well. I'm happy I was able to fit this into my trip as they're only open on weekends. Service is relatively quick (for one person working behind the counter and in the kitchen) but the storefront is tiny so there's not much room for more than 2 groups inside so expect to wait outside. Luckily I only had 2 people in front of me when I went on a Friday around 12:30 but I've heard there's usually a long line.
Small mom and daughter takeout place if one is into Southeast Asia Malaysian dessert. Gotta try in the NYC area where they make batches during the week and sell during weekends.
This small cafe is a very cute spot to stop by and grab a snack. The owner was extremely sweet and explained to us that all of their Kayas were made in house by her. On top of this, their menu does change weekly as well as seasonally which keeps it fun and interesting. My fiancé and I really enjoyed the Malaysian Thin Pancake with the Durian & Cheese filling and the texture of the Pandan Mochi Waffle was nice and chewy, but the flavor of the Waffle wasn't anything special. We will be back to try out more of their menu items especially when they have their homemade Durian ice cream!
Came here with 2 friends during a mini Chinatown food crawl we were doing. I had this spot saved on Google Maps for awhile so I was excited to finally come and try it out. I love desserts, and with all Asians, the ultimate praise is that it's not too sweet. This place definitely hit the spot with the unique combinations and traditional Malaysian desserts. They're only open Friday-Sundays and change their menu weekly so be sure to check their Instagram to see their weekly offering. Everything seems to be made in small batches. The lady working there was super sweet and helped us answer questions. We went for the $12 assorted box. Classic Asian flavors like pandan, coconut, sago, and cassava shone through in these treats. Looking at their other posted menus, they do offer some food-food items too like hainanese chicken and radish soup but mostly it's desserts and snack items. They also offer themed food for Lunar New Year. Seating is minimal. There are about 4 stools inside and then some tables and chairs outside. We went close to opening so were able to grab the seats inside as it was drizzling that day.
For all the Durian lovers out there; Must try Kuih Cafe's Pandan Mochi Waffle with Durian kaya & cheddar cheese. All menu items are made to order at this small Cafe (not much standing space). Wait time for my mochi waffle was moderate, but with the sweet smell of Pandan and durian in the air, made my wait-time a bit more enjoyable; The waffle itself has that wonderful green pandan color, with a bouncy mochi inner layer. The filling is eclectic to say the least, durian was plentiful combined with the savory cheese made this waffle filling and tasty. The auntie behind the counter was working alone on the day of my visit, and still kept the shop running smoothly. The menu of Malay dessert rotates each week; customers can try new items throughout the month. Overall, lovely Asian dessert spot
Been coming to Kuih Cafe for a few years now and their Kuih is always tasty. The rotating desserts are also good. However, a recent experience has soured my experience here and I probably will not be returning in the near future. Due to a popular Instagram post, my husband and I found ourselves waiting an hour in the rain on line today. Upon entering the shop, I noticed the owner was already in a bad mood and impatient for me to order. We quickly ordered and waited for our food. I noticed a burnt smell a few minutes later and she brought out our burnt waffle. When I asked if she could remake it, she told me it was supposed to be like that. I mentioned that it's too dark and burnt on one side and asked if she could promise it wouldn't be bitter. She suggested just returning the item so that is what we ultimately ended up doing. Everything else we ordered was very tasty, hence the 3 stars. Please be the judge of whether the pictured waffle below was burnt. Thanks!
I had wanted to visit this bakery for months. I was in the neighborhood and finally got to grab some pandan desserts. The shop itself is tiny. Prepare to take your food to-go, unless you happen to get a spot on one of three stools they have. I got a kuih set for $12, it comes with three different types, two of each piece. The texture and flavors are so unique. I really loved trying this and will come back to try more of the menu. New York has such cool spots. This is definitely one of them. Give Malaysian desserts a try!
Absolutely the best, most authentic Singaporean/Malaysian food I've had. Come here for the street snacks, stay for the grit. Auntie Veronica's kitchen is like comfort food away from home -- all her baked goods are made day of and she rotates her menu often, but everything is so delicious that you'll be always wanting to try something new. My friend and I got the pancake which is made fresh and hot -- both the original and ube flavors. The original peanut is sooo yummy, reminiscent of Asian sesame flavor and peanut candies from CNY. The Ube jam is a beautiful purple and also made in house. We were so impressed that we ordered two additional ones for our friend's birthday weekend. I also got to try the salted duck yolk butter chicken which is the most genius dish. Like, where else are you going to find this?? (Answer: a hawker center in Singapore!!) I have so much respect for Veronica and her establishment. Please note, because she is a one woman show the food might take some time, but it's well worth the wait depending on how many customers there are (for us, about 10-15 min for food made fresh, with one other customer waiting.) She also wanted me to pass along that sometimes she may come off as curt but it is just because she wants to get your order right. I do hope her business sticks around, it's a rare gem in two bridges. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. I'm sending all my friends here. Note: baked goods do run out by evening (we came Friday 6 pm) -- come early!
I've been wanting to come to Kuih Cafe for a long time, and after seeing their menu for this particular week, I finally came here! I got their Kuih set, their pandan cake, and Ube cookie. I felt like my favorite was the pandan cake! Out of the Kuih set, I really like the multilayer rice cake!
I love the specialty treats at this adorable Malaysian cafe that is not far from Chinatown area. We got the sampler which had taro, coconut milk and pandan specialties. The coconut/pandan mix was my fave! This is a small place but the service was quick and efficient. Next time- I'll check their Instagram page for when they have Kaya available (it's a specialty item that sells out quickly)
This is a cute little experimental café that has a wide selection of Southeast Asian flavors integrated with their treats. I loved the kaya waffle, and the flavors from some of the cookies came out very strong as well. The auntie who runs the shop is so lovely and cute!
Went to try the sesame waffle and is so good!!!! The sesame flavor is so good and flavorful!! $12.42 tho but worth a try
Cute little store! I wish they sold the kuih more individually because the sampler has way too many and for a decent amount of money ($15). All 3 were tasty but so heavy so I would only want a single bite so the platter is overkill. Im glad I tried but probably not my favorite type of dessert so i wouldn't get again. I'm curious about other items they have
I'm back at Kuih Cafe, a tiny, no-frills cafe serving small-batch Malaysian treats. Their hours are super limited as they're only open Fri through Sun, and the menu changes up weekly! Some of their fan favorites are the mochi waffles in flavors like pandan, black sesame, and durian, plus their beautiful kuih set (so good!). They just launched these new chiffon cake sandwiches, and imo they deserve way more hype! Everything is made fresh to order by the owner Veronica, so lines can get long and things sell out FAST. ＊Black Sesame Kaya Chiffon $9 The black sesame chiffon cake is super soft, light, airy, and moist, sandwiched with a nutty black sesame kaya. Each one is assembled fresh to order, so the line moves slowly. The homemade black sesame paste is roasty and creamy with a slightly grainy texture, and not too sweet. They also have pandan chiffon with kaya jam and ube chiffon with taro kaya. ＊Pandan Kaya Jam $12/8oz Million times better than the store-bought kaya jam! It's very vanilla-y, more jammy in texture instead of custard-y. Perfect with milk toast and a slab of butter. You can choose from traditional hainanese (caramel gula melaka) or pandan flavor. Check out their weekly menu to catch the limited drop! read more

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review, Ruby! We are so glad…
First, the owner Victoria is so sweet and kind! She owns, manages and makes everything on her own which is amazing - especially in a city like NYC!! For those who don't follow her on Instagram, they specialize in classic Malaysian and Malaysian/Western fusion desserts. Their menu for the Pancakes and Waffles remains pretty much constant but other items like the Kuih Sets, ice creams, and special desserts change weekly. They are also only open on weekends Friday-Sunday so make sure to time your visit accordingly. I had enquired about their Ube Mochi Kuih via Instagram before they released their menu for the week of my NYC visit, and she informed me that they did not have any plans for the Ube Mochi that week. Despite being a busy business owner, she was quick to respond which I thanked her for and told her that I will keep an eye out on her Instagram for the Ube mochi so I can plan another trip from Philly to NYC. To my pleasant surprise, the next day she messaged me again informing that they were keeping the Ube mochi on the menu that week! I was ecstatic because not only did she put it on the menu but also made sure to let me know about it! As promised, we got there around 1 PM that Friday and there were already a few people in the shop. We got the Pandan Mochi Waffle with Black Sesame Kaya, Pandan Kaya Toast Ice cream and the Kuih Set which had the Talam Pandan, Sago-Ubi Kayu and the Ube mochi! We got the outside tables under the big umbrella, and fortunately for us, the weather wasn't bad at all despite it being the middle of summer. I am not even kidding when I say everything we had was absolutely phenomenal! The Pandan Mochi Waffle was freshly prepared, warm, with the perfect chew and stretch while the Black sesame Kaya added just the perfect amount of nuttiness to the waffle. The Pandan Kaya Toast ice cream was bursting with Pandan flavor and came with a nice little Kaya toast on it. This was the best Pandan flavored ice cream I have ever had, period. The Kuih set alone was worth traveling from Philly - each of the kuihs in the Kuih set was amazing, mildly sweetened and incredibly delicious! I am extremely grateful to her for keeping the Ube mochi on the menu when I visited. She is such a kind soul, and I wish her the best and her business a lot of the success! I will make sure to visit them whenever I am in NYC, and I request anyone reading this review to please visit her if you haven't already! Their menu is perfect to sit down or take out. And don't forget to follow her on Instagram @kuihcafe for weekly drops! read more
No bakery excites me more than Kuih. Plenty of French boulangeries take space in this city, but do you ever hear of a Malaysian cafe? I love southeast Asian food, so I made a point to finally check this off my list. I've heard so much about martabak on TikTok, so I was thrilled to see this dish here. I ordered the traditional, with brown sugar and crushed peanuts. The martabak was delicious! The mochi-like pancake was bouncy, the filling both salty and sweet like peanut butter. Although, because of the filling, the overall bite was a bit try. I think a sauce, like caramel or condensed milk, would add some moisture to it. I certainly want to return here, perhaps to try other desserts, like the pandan pancake with butter and caramel. That sounds divine. read more

I really wanted to try kaya jam and came across this spot on Yelp and immediately made my way over. It's a small spot with delicious treats and the kindest employee. My friend and I shared an Apam Balik (Malyasian pancake) which could have 2 flavors, so we tried the original and the butter-kaya. I honestly loved both, I thought they were both really unique. The original had some peanuts and corn which gave it a really fun texture and the butter-kaya was perfectly silky. This is a great spot to grab some beautiful and delicious treats to share with friends or even just for yourself! read more

This Malaysian food is extremely tasty. We nicely chatter with the owner who is managing everything by herself. We very nicely surprised that most of the items are coming from Malaysa and are handmade. Recommend this business and definitely will be back to try new menu that is charging all the time. read more

It's a small little store with a couple of tables out front, but more suitable for takeaway. Everything is made fresh so expect a wait if there's a queue. Most of the desserts are delicious and does remind me of Malaysia in some capacity. The cendol was good although not my favorite item. Their Pandan ice cream is delicious and I would get it again. The Pandan peanut pancake is just okay. The Pandan flavor was lacking and it didn't have a nice bouncy texture like I'm familiar with. Here it was a bit mushy, so I tossed most of it unfortunately. I heard great things are about the noodles, so I may order that next time. I'd definitely come back and try the rest since it all seems delicious and everyone left with happy faces. read more
The owner is so friendly!! FYI, their menu changes every Wed (check insta for the specials)! The Kuih Angku and Kuih Sago-Ubi Kayu were tasty :) There are also cute seasonal items, like little bunny desserts during the year of the rabbit! read more
First time having Malaysian desserts! We tried the Apam Balik (Malaysia Pancake/Crepe), and it was really good! Very unique and Asian (not very sweet, even some salty). We got the combo (half original: crushed roasted peanuts/butter/sweet cream corn + butter-kaya (pandan spread)). Both were so good and very unique. The original flavor was crispy on the outside with yummy peanut butter and sweet cream corn. Definitely drop by this mom and pop shop and try this out! read more

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review, David! We are so glad…
I grew up eating lots of Malaysian food and desserts so I was so glad to find this shop when I moved to NYC! It was Thanksgiving weekend so there weren't a lot of options left but I got myself a Kuih Set, which change from time to time. --Pulut Tai Tai - really reminded me of kuih salat with the bed of glutinous rice with a savory coconut flavor. The pandan cream was just enough for a sweet balance. I'm a huge sucker for sweet savory combos so I think this one won my heart! --Ubi Kayu - was a close second because of loved the QQ chewiness of the cassava! Loved how it was like a two hit bunch: first the strong coconut flakes then the subtle coconut flavors from the cake itself. --Panda Magic - also enjoyed this one because it had 3 different layers of pandan! Sponge cake on top and more traditional kuih at the bottom - talk about the textural contrast! The store itself was small and the owner was super sweet. Heard that she gave some extras to the customer in front of us. Wanted to try so many other things but wasn't in stock given the holidays. Some seating outside but everything is small and well packaged so you can take it to enjoy back home or elsewhere. read more
Amazing spot for kuih / treats! I tried the Kuih ambon pandan and kuih set (pulut tai tai, pandan lapis, and pandan magic). The pandan lapis was my favorite, but everything was fantastic. Limited seating so it's best to get your treats to go. read more

My friend came by the other day and informed me of the weekly special of durian ice cream. I knew I had to come by to try it. The storekeeper remembered her and asked us some questions about our lives. The durian was super fragrant. It wasn't the creamiest durian ice cream I've had, and I do think they add some sweetener to the ice cream. There were bits of durian meat in it though, which I appreciated because then I could tell it was real durian. Their card machine was down that weekend, but they accept Venmo. read more

I am based in Orange County, California and haven been back home (Malaysia) for 3 years. So you can imagine my joy when I saw how Kuih Cafe offers Apam Balik (Malaysian Pancake). Loved how the Appam Balik was not too sweet but yet tasted like home. Will be back again! read more
Southeast Asian cafes and bakeries own my heart, and I'm so glad they've been popping up all over NYC. I've been frequenting Kuih Cafe for the past few years, and I'm a big fan of their Malaysian goods. While I'm mostly not a fan of kuih itself, their savory options like the nasi lemak (either with coconut or pandan rice), pulut panggang (a cylinder of sticky rice stuffed with spicy dried shrimp and shredded coconut, then wrapped in a banana leaf and grilled), and kuih cara berlauk (savory little pancake bites with curry-flavored minced beef and eggs) are delightful. I also like a lot of their cakes, which feature different layers of sponge cake, cheesecake, jelly, and/or icing for a great textural contrast. The ice cendol is a delightfully icy treat for a hot summer day. And on my most recent visit, I enjoyed their earl grey mini burnt cheesecake, a fluffy and creamy snack with a light but recognizable tea flavor. When winter rolls around, they also make a nice assortment of hot and comforting dessert soups like bubur pulut hitam (coconut milk, black sticky rice, and palm sugar) and bubur cha cha (coconut milk with diced taro and sweet potatoes). The owners and employees are always friendly and helpful. Their storefront is tiny, with just a few countertop seats inside and one or two tables outside, so I've always gotten my food to go. They take cash, card, or Venmo. They have a weekly rotating menu, so make sure to check their Instagram for updates! read more

I love Kuih Cafe! Although my first visit was only earlier this summer, I've been here 3 times already. My favorite item is the Ice Chendol, super refreshing - perfect for the warm weather! I've also had the Salted duck egg butter chicken rice, which was delicious, and one of the Kuih sets, which I really liked - very unique textures and flavors and not too sweet. Veronica, the owner, is very friendly and such a hardworking and dedicated woman. It was inspiring listening to her story and how much she loves what she does. I definitely recommend checking out this small but mighty business! read more

This hole in the wall spot is such a hidden gem. The store front probably only can fit two or three people inside, and their speciality are these Malaysian sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf desserts called Kuih. Sticky, sweet, gooey, and with a thick coconut flavor served at the right temperature of slightly lukewarm, these instantly bring me back to my trips in southeast Asia. Also try the coconut ube cake. It was pretty darn good as well. Total came out to be $10 bucks for both kuih and cake, what a good deal for such a hidden gem read more
