My husband and I love Malaysian food and take frequent trips to NYC just to visit our favorite Malaysian spots. We were very excited to discover Malay nearby in Morristown, and we had to check it out. We ordered the Malay Prawn Mee, Chicken Sambal, and the Roti Canai. Roti Canai is one of my favorite Malaysian dishes, but this didn't quite hit the spot. The roti wasn't soft and dip-able. It was kind of flaky and kept falling apart every time I tried to use it to scoop up some curry. The curry was a little watery and not all that flavorful, and I defintiely would've appreciated more than just one or two chunks of potato and chicken. The chicken sambal and soup were additionally a bit disappointing. The chicken sambal was just okay for me, and the flavor didn't really blow me out of the water. It almost felt like something I could make at home. The soup similarly did not have a particularly rich or flavorful broth, and left me a little dissapointed. Another thing that really influences my review is how cold it was inside. It got even colder when people opened and closed the door. It was so cold that our food didn't seem hot. I think the cold air cooled it off instantly and we were left eating room temperature chicken and soup. read more

I love this place! How have I not already reviewed it! With this being the only Malaysian place anywhere near - and having dated someone in Morristown back in the day - I've had a range of authentic dishes here including the beautiful Yam Ring. You owe it to yourself to get that dish at least once in your life. I can also recommend... basically anything with the word Malay attached, which tells me the other dishes are probably also good if that's your style. Well today, I'm ordering takeout to start my holiday a little sooner, but service is prompt and friendly. They're happy to answer your questions and offer advice on your order. They recommended me away from getting something breaded to go, as being covered would steam the crispiness away. How thoughtful. This place is so cute. I went here on a date and the service was pretty good. The place is intimate and perfect for lunch or dinner. We got the satay tofu to start and the tofu was perfectly cooked and the sauce was delicious on top. I don't know if I would get again because of the texture of the bean sprouts on top, but that's more of a personal preference than a comment on their cooking. For dinner, I had the potato curry with tofu which was very yummy. I got spice level 3 out of 5 but it wasn't very spicy just a hint of spice. My date got the curry mee which he thoroughly enjoyed. There was enough for decent leftovers and the prices were reasonable for the portion and quality of the food. I think the curry mee was $14 and my date got two meals out of it, honestly, not bad especially in this economy. I would come back here again and try some other items on their menu. read more

Excellent Malaysian/Thai restaurant overall. While a couple of sauces were simple to the point of anonymity, overall our food was beautifully prepared, beautifully cooked, and tasty. I particularly recommend the Satay tofu appetizer, which was simply amazing. The duck, while pricey, also was delicious. Had lunch here with friends today, it's a small cozy place, we were seated immediately and staff were very attentive. Gave us time to settle down and suggested daily specials. We had lobster bisque soup, steamed dumplings, thai basil noodle, pad thai, wonton noodle soup. Everything was fresh, hot and tasted amazing. Not only was water quickly presented, but they also placed a caraf at our table, which was constantly replenished. I'm so glad that I ordered their lychee drink. Went to meet a friend here, after her recommendation, after a long day of work and I have to say, I was truly impressed. We arrived there a little after 5pm, and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Others were showing up, gradually, but it was nice to have a little bit of time to ourselves. The restaurant has a pretty inconspicuous entrance, however, once you walk inside, the ambiance is calm, relaxed and just sets you up to feel like you're about to have a great experience. My friend brought her young daughter with her, and the restaurant was able to accommodate her with a high chair which I thought was awesome. The menu has many options on it, but it is divided up in such a way that you don't feel overwhelmed. This novice was very appreciative for that since I wanted to be able to look at everything before needing to make a choice. The menu allows you to choose your spice level (from 1 to 5 with 5 being the spiciest) and this spice fiend loved having that option. I ordered the Nasi Lemak (one of the Malay rice dishes). When the food arrived, each ingredient was separate on the plate so that you would have the autonomy to mix it together at your pace and preserve the texture of each individual item. Food was excellent. Spice level was perfect, flavors mixed together perfectly, and the texture of each item was perfect. I don't think there are enough good things I can say about my meal. Highly impressed and super excited to come back and try more dishes. If you haven't tried Malaysian food or are looking for a new place to try, I would absolutely give this place a try. P.S. If you aren't convinced, just know that their bathroom is immaculate and attention to detail is there, so just imagine how much effort they put into making their food even better. A really solid option for takeout Thai! I placed the order for delivery and it arrived piping hot and fresh within thirty minutes. I hate when delivery takes forever and comes cold, so this was definitely a win. The pad thai was also a winner and came with a generous amount of meat and noodles, plus all of the delicious fixings. It was super flavorful and well cooked. The curry puffs had a really crispy and crunchy pastry shell and came with a sweet and spicy duck sauce for dipping. I didn't try much of the rice because it was spicy, but it came with a generous amount of sweet and crispy pork. I've been a little disappointed in the delivery quality from Up Thai, so it's nice to have Malay as another option. I was dining in at Saigon Subs & Cafe right next door for lunch and was going to get some takeout from Penang afterwards for dinner. Saw this place while looking for parking and decided to get Malaysian food from here instead due to the unexpected snow. They opened at 11, I went in at 12:10, the first 2 things I tried to order, the owner had to go back to the kitchen twice to ask if it was available. They only had 1 order of white meat chicken rice dish left and luckily, they had the whole Hainanese chicken I wanted. I also got the roti canai and golden squid. There were only like 8 little pieces of squid on top of a bed of vegetables, nothing like Penang's. The roti canai pancake wasn't crispy and the curry sauce was watery & bland. The Hainanese chicken was actually decent, I ate half by myself and the chicken flavor rice was good as well as the chili sauce. If I was to come back again, I'd only get the Hainanese chicken. Fyi: there's a fee if you pay with credit card but if you pay with cash, you get 10% off. Plenty of metered parking. read more

Really good Thai food! Every single dish did not disappoint. We shared a few apps and four main dishes family style. It was plenty of food and we're all stuffed at the end. We got the chicken skewers (peanut sauce was soooo good), roti Canai (solid), and curry puffs (well worth the 15 minute wait and soo flakey) for apps. Then we got chicken pad Thai, black pepper chicken, coconut shrimp, and green curry for apps. Literally all were pipin hot and so flavorful. There was not a drop left on the plates. It's a no frill restaurant but they are great about filling your water and getting the food out very quickly once they take your order. They are very busy for take out (so you know the locals love it). The actual restaurant is also nice, comfortable, and we'll decorated. It's byob so you can't go wrong with take out or sit down. Not familiar with the menu and while it was easy for me to choose an appetizer- had a tough time with the main course. I initially ordered Hainanese chicken but our server told me that wasn't a good choice for me. We shared the dishes, and we had (3) appetizers. The roti was a light treat, lettuce wraps were good and the Thai spring rolls were great. Both beef dishes were extremely tender and the red curry beef (mine) had a bit more heat which was perfect as we are moving into cooler nights. The rendang was really reminiscent of a Sunday pot roast that has been cooked low and slow and melts in your mouth. We had a NYE reservation for 12 people and they were able to accommodate us in a private room, no problem! The room was a little tight with such a large table but we were happy to be able to sit at a round table all together. The table had a perfectly convenient lazy susan in the middle so that we could easily share apps and wine. There was something on the menu for everyone since we had a range of diners with us - some more adventurous and some more tame when it comes to taste. We were able to specify which level of spicy we wanted and we could customize the protein selection in our dishes. The variety of appetizers allowed for each of us to have a little bite of everything before our entrees came out and everyone left very satisfied and full. I have been to Malay Morristown several times, love the food! But I've been working myself up to trying one specific menu item: Nasi Lemak I have been a bit scared because the first ingredient on the menu description is "anchovies." Always a bit leery of a dish that shows anchovies first. Well, I wish I had gathered my courage sooner because this dish is FABULOUS! The anchovies are dried and not at all fishy. Plus it has such a variety of flavors in it that the anchovies just add some mani to the rice, fresh cucumber, sweet chili sauce, and curry that are all part of the dish. It also a mixture of different flavors and textures that make it a self-contained smorgasbord. So don't be afraid. Get the Nasi Lemak. :-) read more

Amazzzinngggg. Wow. Everything was packed with so much flavor. Ordered to go - curry mee shrimp and Malay shrimp fried rice (because FYI if you pay with card the minimum is $20). I heard so many good things about this place and the hype is real. I was very impressed with the staff and my food. Prices were decent. The host was very helpful with helping me pick out a second item. He even brought my food out to my car when it was done maybe 15-20 minutes later. The fried rice was 10/10 awesome. Quite a good spot for quality Malaysian food. Folks here are nice, and restaurant looks nice and welcoming. I like they understood vegan diet requirements and quickly gave me options. The MeeSiam is an amped up version of pad Thai that gets better the hotter they make it. The white meat chicken Rendang is lick the container good.
